"Yes, that's essentially it. Although interestingly there has been a division among the Counter's followers."
-
"Some old man said that it's not how 'bad' or 'good' you are, but how much you make that matters in this life. You following?"
-
"A uh." Arthur took a moment to think about this. "I guess you could call it a cult or religion, that seems fairly similar."
-
"Huh, I don't know about a 'commode,' but we do work to enrich ourselves like any sane person does. Of course, there are also those who follow the way of the Counter."
-
"Pretty sure it is some old dead language that roughly translates to 'small smart angry people' or something stupid like that. I think management figures that its a sign of inferiority if you can't understand it."
-
"It wasn't personal, just business. It's so strange how everyone takes all fo this stuff personally constantly; we're not the Death Angels, we're the Parvis Dolor ira Populo, we don't do any of that personal stuff."
-
"Hmph, he came off as quite a but dim-witted if you ask me. It didn't help that he kept trying to avoid any small talk, that seemed a bit rude to me. Then again, I am but a business man."
-
"Hmm? Yes, I suppose it is. You have been very helpful Melody, more so than your friend was. Now, I'm sure you understand why I can't let you leave, so we might as well make the most of it."
-
"Call me . . ." The man thought for a second, "Arthur will work I guess. What about you?"
-
"I suppose I could, it's not as if you could get very far in this city." The man waved to the thug, and he came and took off Melody's bindings, watching her all the while.
-
"Unless you needlessly put yourself in danger. For the counting, I told him that I'd keep you safe here, and I intend to keep my end of our little 'bargain.' You'll be staying here until he comes back, and I'll be sure that nothing happens to you, you got that?" The man's voice was filled with resolve that betrayed its natural squeakiness.
-
"I'm sure he'll be fine; and if he won't then, I have collateral. Besides, what could you do to help him? He's off somewhere in this vast city, I doubt that you would even be able to find him."
-
"Ellis will be along soon; for now, you should stay here with me. You've already stirred up trouble with us, wouldn't want you getting in trouble with someone else until your friend returns. We have Cill here to watch over us, so we should be fine."
-
"Dark . . . Lord? How competent would you say that he is?" Tagging @Mystic Syn in.
-
The woman looked towards Ellis as he called, but nearly panicked at the mention of the name. She started to act as if she had not heard Ellis, and walked off as fast as she could without outright running.
-
"Everyone has good intentions. My old man once told me that good intentions paves the path to eternal suffering whatever that means. Now, tell me about your friend, this Ellis."
-
"Not quite as dumb as your friend, but still a little slow. Well, it seems that we needn't worry about that street vendor divulging our information. Now, what can you tell me about the Death Cult called the Death Angels?"
-
"Good enough for me. What do you know of the Mafia?"
-
The man wrote down what Melody said word for word. "Unfortunately, your friend was not very helpful to us while he was here, so we had to deal with that. Now tell me, what do you know of the Parvis Dolor ira Populo?"
-
"You're right, we would have found it when we searched you. You remember what it said?" The spindly man brought up a blank piece of paper and a pen.
-
"A prophecy? You wouldn't happen to have a copy of it on you, would you?"
-
"Now what would a wizard want with you? You're not exactly wizard material."
-
"That is the largest load of fraud that I've ever heard. Your friend wasn't very helpful either, had to get him out of the picture."
-
"None of your business, off on his business, and you got into my business. Now tell me, what are you doing in this city?"
-
The small man drawing looked up and responded in his squeaky voice. "Hmm? Oh good, you're awake. I suppose you have questions."
