  1. "That aren't mandatory. Besides, some sort of qualifying exam that gives you licenses makes the whole thing easier on everyone. Saves some poor sap from having to search through all of the academy records. It would also allow for independent Dusters like yourself to have a better resumé. That's how we do things in the Confederacy."
  2. "Yeah that's true, but what about policing Dusters and keeping order? If you don't have a way to determine who has the proper training, then how can you properly apply the law?"
  3. Tulcam looked taken aback for a moment, "no I didn't mean the uh, the academy. I meant that it doesn't sound smart to have no way to tell if someone is recognized by the government as a Duster, like a permit or license."
  4. Tulcam looked concerned, "that doesn't sound . . . smart."
  5. "There's no qualifying exam for permit to become a Duster in Myriad?"
  6. Tulcam nodded, "now that makes more sense. You said that you're the youngest Duster in Myriad, do you have anything else that qualifies you?"
  7. Tulcam shrugged, "the way you said it made it sound like you were recruited by the theater or arena or whatever, so I thought that you would know more about it."
  8. "I've never been to Myria, but I would think that I'd know if they had gladiatorial combat." Tulcam paused, "do they?"
  9. "Then explain to me how on earth a theater fits into all of this."
  10. Arthur spared another glance at his handlers, "a change in administration. The guy I normally work under got . . . reassigned. My new boss isn't entirely enthralled with how I do business for our organization." Arthur quickly changed the subject, "so why are you going camping?"
  11. In response to their threatenings, Pior took out his Sword Staff and began to do minor maintenance work on it, seemingly taking no notice of the mob as he stood next to Val.
  12. Tulcam raised an eyebrow, "another joke? I almost think that you're trying to force me to develop a sense of humor."
  13. Tulcam nodded, visibly pleased the the subject was being changed. "I am curious, how did you get tangled up in all of this?"
  14. The colonel considered it for a moment, "there are a lot of them, and I'd . . . rather not repeat them right now."
  15. The colonel looked as if he didn't know how to respond to it. "I generally don't like nicknames, but since you're not under my command I can't do much about it. At least it's not like some of the others that I've heard."
  16. Ros followed close behind Crescendo, having not noticed the sound at first.
  17. Tulcam didn't seem to be outwardly amused, "mocking or endearing?"
  18. "Cadenza, it's Colonel 'Tulcam,' not 'Talcum.'" The colonel paused for a moment as he thought about it before asking curiously, "was that meant to be a joke?"
  19. The colonel nodded. "That will make things easier. Now come, I need to get everyone together in order to begin moving from this place." Even though the colonel had noticeably calmed down, there would be occasional facial expressions that would break through, they were typically expressions displaying some sort of pain, conflict, or anger.
