  1. Ok I know there is now a dedicated thread but I had to finish these ideas while they were here So you mean we should make an even bigger Death Star next time around... right? Ok you probably already saw this but just in case: Edit: New thread title noice
  2. Welcome, welcome! A philosophy scholar and an aspiring author??? I anticipate quite the interesting novel from you and by the looks of that idea you already have a great start! I think another read before RoW is quite timely, I applaud (still debating myself whether I have time but I think we all know how that will end ) If interested, Reading Excuses could be a fun place to peruse and chat with other aspiring authors. Also, would love to know who you would choose to be your best friend, if you could choose anyone in the Cosmere. Other than that, hope you are safe as well and welcome to the Shard!
  3. Honestly this is I think one of the reasons why their movies do so well too! Like they find people who are the character in real life. SO then when they are filming they are like half acting, half being themselves so it feels more natural Like this wasn't normally something I was paying attention to until I saw bad acting that just really screwed up a movie cuz you couldn't believe in it and I was like WOAH... Marvel does it rly well!
  4. Ok and this is so true too wow just noticed lol. He is totally being cast into that dorky-young-but-smart kid thing. Honestly tho it fits him really well and if it's working for him, and it seems it is, more power to him. I just wonder what his role will be once he actually grows up (or maybe he never will ) And I totally agree, I do think he was the best Spider-man we have had. Might just be me but I think Marvel casts their roles really well
  5. YES couldn't agree more! Even rocking some mammoth sideburns he still looks like he's 11 to me
  6. Glad they were tolerable... try to make them good but sometimes all I got is the bad ones . And c'mon, moderating as a teen simply makes you extra accomplished! Glad you are enjoying. Hope to see more of you around
  7. Welcome, welcome! Glad to have you here! 2004 huh, think you were moderating before some of the people on here were even born as crazy as that seems! Random things are the best things, just like rutabaga, no need to apologize. Oof yeah well I think you are passing the non-spam test, that and maybe a smell test to make sure there's nothing fishy (see what I did there) going on here (lol...ok yeah that was horrible wow I apologize). We most definitely hope you do get caught up in some random Cosmere discussions! Would love to have another person to talk to . And may you have an excellent night as well, what a pleasant message!
  8. Good answers! It happens to be that the first Cosmere book I read was Elantris as well so I guess this makes us destined to be best fiends (or maybe arch-nemesis' ... still not quite sure on that you choose). As far as the Elantris Magic and Allomancy, I think those are definitely good answers. AonDor in particular is interesting because your skill with it relies heavily on your ability and practice so it would give people a good motivation to improve themselves. As far as Allomancy, I like the versatility as well, we just gotta be sure to leave out Hemalurgy when bringing in Allomancy tho. Could have some... unforeseen consequences if it happened to sneak in
  9. Glad you are turning your lurking into working I like that attitude ! Glad to have you here and hope you enjoy your time. Everyone here is super friendly so if you need anything don't hesitate to reach out. If you would like to tell us, would love to know who would you choose to be your best friend, if you could choose anyone in the Cosmere? Other than that jump in wherever and enjoy the ride! Welcome to the Shard!
  10. Welcome to the Shard! We hope your trip through inter-dimensional space to reach our lovely section of the internet was as enjoyable as possible. If you were traveling with any magical pets or items you will be able to retrieve them in the “Checking and Bagging” section of the spaceport. If you have any questions, our forum members tend to be well versed in the advanced art of “conversation” and “being a nice person.” Please do not hesitate to ask! As a precautionary screening measure, we would love to know what has been your favorite book in the Cosmere. If you would like to provide additional answers to verify your identity as not an evil being set on destroying us and everything we stand for, answers to questions such as, “What do you think of as the most critical event in the history of the Cosmere?” “What was the first book in the Cosmere that you read and do you wish you had started elsewhere?” and “Which magic system would you bring into the real world, if you could only choose one?” serve as useful measures of your non-evil identity. As for everything else, grab your bags and get ready for a ride, we hope you enjoy your stay here at the 17th Shard!
  11. In case anyone has this question in the future I am putting the link here for future reference.
  12. I THIRD the Discord rec- Lol jk but would take Mist and Honorless up on their suggestion if you want a more fast paced conversation. If you would like to find some interesting topics to chat about on this forum though I would recommend looking at General Brandon Discussion, Stormlight Archive, or any of the topics in the Community section. A good rule of thumb to find interesting conversation is to go the main forum page and see which topics have the most posts in them, the more posts they have, generally the more interesting it is (a very broad rule but just something to get you started). Hope this helps you find what you are looking for. Welcome to the Shard!
  13. Lol good, good then, phew (jk jk I getchu, better to let it exist in its own world then bring it down by tying it to people of the real world, I like that). And while I was thinking evil, it could also be quite a clever revenge plot against a good guy. Either way I am sure the shankiness is in good hands with you. Lmk when that part gets written (only if you want to) would love to see how shankified it gets
  14. Oh dear, oh dear. Someone evil I hope... right?? And just as an afterthought I don't happen to be in that book do I? Just... checking
  15. Wow! Thank you so much! Man, I didn't even know if people would read it because it was so long. I am so happy that you took the time to and that you enjoyed it to that degree! I guess you could say this ride was a rolling success... (man all that and then I ruin it with a bad pun... *sigh*) And yes, shank, has quite an interesting sound to it. Glad I could get you two acquainted. Just as long as you make sure to stay away from the real deal, the word can be quite entertaining to use .
  16. Oooh what an interesting question good thinking! I present: The Definitive Guide to Making a Good Post (jk jk just a bundle of thoughts lols) The issue: It’s really hard to understand how someone meant something to sound or be emphasized when reading it online. As a result, you have to put in a little more work than normal to make it both interesting and noninflammatory! Ten Tips and Tricks of the Terrific Most Tentacular Trade First, never start off a post with something negative. If you want to jump in somewhere, ease yourself in with a compliment. It’s a good way to not alienate yourself before even getting your words out. If I had started this with “This is stupid but I guess I’ll write something” I guarantee you would not have continued reading! Parenthesis are really useful for sneaking in commentary on your own work, a joke, or a reflection that makes a joke just like you would do after saying something stupid in the real world (and trust me it’s always entertaining to read) Make sure what you are posting is relevant, new, and interesting. Don’t post about my little pony in the Comsere discussion section (unless you have tremendously good reasoning then by all means go ahead), don’t post a repeat of something that has already been discussed a bunch (in less you plan to lead it in a way that hasn’t been discussed), and don’t post something that you yourself aren’t interested in (if you’re not interested in writing it, chances are people won’t be interested in reading it) Using ellipses (…), italics, capitalization, and bolding (is that the word??), efficiently helps convey tone and mood. “How could you possibly do that” is mild and uninterested. “HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY DO THAT” is fly out of your chair pissed. “HOW could you possibly do THAT” shows that you are both engaged, mad, and dumfounded all at the same time just by the way you have emphasized the words in the sentence. Generally, I use italics for the word you want to emphasize, caps for things you are mock angry about, bold for important stuff and… uh… well... ig I use ellipses for like a pause or a sort of “stuttering” or “unsure” feel (see what I did there). Avoid broad statements (… crap). Nah but for real though, don’t try to generalize. If you are talking about something talk about that thing and that thing only. There will always be an exception to your rule so don’t set yourself up for failure Emojis are really good for showing that you are joking or meaning something in a positive light. For example, if I say, “That’s crazy you fool, why would you think that ?” It’s a lot easier to tell I’m making a joke and egging you on than if I say “That’s crazy you fool, why would you think that?” where you wonder if I happen to have really bad case of the Mondays Using shortened, misspelled, or made up words can also add to the I-am-joking atmosphere. Saying “Everyone here is crazy but dats alrighties with mes” is better at letting people know that you are intending things in a playful way and not an “Everyone here is crazy but that’s all right with me” way, where you assume yourself to be the only sane one in the bunch Don’t use declaratory language. As Honorless pointed out above using words like “I think” or “possibly” let’s people know that you do not think of yourself as the most intelligent, magnificent, infallible person in the world (cuz that would obv be me ) and shows that you are merely presenting an opinion and are open to other peoples opinions. “I just think it can be a good way to let people know you are open to their ideas,” shows that I am presenting my view on it and not declaring that “It shows people you are open to their ideas” as if I know everything in the universe (which again… I do ) One of the easiest ways to make a post interesting is to just have fun with it as Invocation put above. Don’t force ideas down because that’s how you want your opinion to sound, say what you mean and mean what you say. Be genuine and expand upon your ideas in an engaging fashion, just like if you were talking to someone face to face. Finally, the last thing I would say is just remember there is someone on the other side. Don’t say things that are mean or hurtful. Don’t try to shame people or put other people down to make your viewpoint “better” or to sound more “confident.” If someone seems uninterested in something, they probably are. Like Karger said don’t force something. Just be a kind, genuine, human being and try to give people the benefit of the doubt Hope that helps lols. I would say the last super secret tip is to just have confidence in what you have to say. If you aren’t confident it will come across in your writing and make it less interesting. Just chillax with it, you got it! (Bonus points if you noticed I tried to discuss a technique before I used it in a later tip, or was that obvious... idk lol)
  17. Glad to have you here! Welcome to the Shard! I would say this is definitely the place to be if you have even a remote interest in fantasy, writing, or Brandon Sanderson's work and you happen to have all three! Don't worry at all if things are a bit unbalanced, everyone here is super friendly and supportive and completely understanding. We were all new at some point (and some of us still are lol). Quite the collection there glad you have worked your way through them all. "Obsessively" is quite fitting for a Sanderson read, I actually am starting to wonder if it is even possible to do so without . And yes, always read when you can, never know when you will have more time! As far as a more in depth discussion of hard/soft magic systems I would definitely do as Karger said and head over to the Creater's Corner page (In the Community section at the bottomish of the main forum page). I would also maybe check out the Writing Excuses section (although a more aspiring author-forum member could probably confirm or deny this). So cool that his work has helped you develop your own series! Always great when you can learn from someone whose work you enjoy. As another thing you might enjoy checking out the Reading Excuses page. There you can get and share critiques with other people and improve together. You could probably even link parts of your online series for people to take a look at. Absolutely not too long (although this might be sorry) for an intro, enjoyed getting to read about you.
  18. No problem, glad we could help! And yes, they do look quite, quite beautiful glad you could snag one
  19. Oooh good find Fish! @Spenzapain I think this is what you are looking for. You can join with a late pledge. All the tiers and what they contain is also explained quite well in the link Edit: I think what you are describing fits best with Tier 4 although not sure so definitely take a look. The Leatherbound + Swag add on might be what you were looking for but I don't know if that has any of the stretch goals included. Either way, I'm sure one of the ones on there is what you were thinking of
  20. Welcome to the Shard! So glad you are enjoying the books so much. Absolutely loving them is where a lot of stand so you are in good company . I'm going to let other people chime in with more detail for the first question but I'll just leave a quick answer here. For me if you have read all of the Mistborn series and SA and some Arcanum and Skyward I would probably say go with Warbreaker and then Elantris. Popular opinion dictates Warbreaker as being the favorite so probs start there (or be rebellious and don't read either you do you ). If you want non-cosmere I find the Alcatraz series to be absolutely hilarious (although more simple cuz it's more YA targeted) to read and I love them. Reckoners is also a pretty good series too (also YA but good). As far as the second question I am sure someone more qualified can answer but I was under the impression that you can get the book and packaged stuff from his website in the future but I believe that the stretch goals were specific to backing the campaign. I could be totally spouting gibberish here but that is what I had understood it to be. Someone likely has a more definitive answer tho I am sure so I hope there is still a way for you to get it.
  21. Putting these in the same comment cuz I think they are both connected. Yes, Fish, for me the way that like time and technology jumps forward from ATLA to LoK was reminding me of the time changes from Era 1 to Era 2. Like it's not exactly connected but the way everything becomes industrialized in LoK where ATLA was more like rural towns and less developed cities was totally reminding of the time shift. Also the way they both sorta center around like a "big city" and stuff was totally connecting for me. Ok now Hentient totally agree on stylistic choices and the world. Like I was just saying above just seeing the time shift and the way things evolved and modernized over time is super cool. And pro bending is definitely kinda dope and it totally fits with the theme, like professional athletes are really skilled at their sport and sports have grown as things have modernized. So, it makes sense that as things modernized in LoK benders who were really skilled would also form like "sport" teams. Idk I just thought they did a really good job of making it connect and seem realistic. And 100% the animation is so much better, it's cool that they were able to do like a similar idea and style of show at two different times with different access to technology. And then we get the benefit of seeing how it improved.
  22. Absolutely! Glad you decided to make the plunge, it is quite a massive read but highly, highly rewarding! I would definitely agree on it being a good entry point for the Cosmere although you are right, they have to be just tad committed to enjoy the recommendation
  23. Welcome, welcome! You have definitely come to the right place! Neglecting everything else to read is a pretty common habit around here . I think if the world consisted of just the people on this forum there would be a severe amount of nothing being accomplished every time a new book came out. So, I guess we can pardon those who haven't come to their senses and started reading Sanderson books for at least being able to keep things moving. Yeah, Sanderson books, SA in particular, are most definitely ones you want to shout from the mountaintops about. Just be careful not to get too close to the edge in all the shouting, wouldn't want to lose a fan. Also, making sure you have an appropriate path back down the mountain might be of use. But for real though, so glad you found them and are enjoying them. They are definitely top quality reads when compared to the vast majority of things and perfect for getting your read back on (I mean what's the point of getting "mature" interests anyway, a magical universe trying to prepare for impending doom is wayyy more exciting). We are excited... to excite... your excitement... yknow that's not working too well we are happy you are here it is the perfect place to talk Stormlight! And yes one amazing benefit of being on a Brandon Sanderson book forum is that you encounter far more people interested in SA and fantasy than you would in normal life (as crazy as that is ). Helps fill in any gaps in fantasy love you may encounter out in the wild. Welcome to the shard!
  24. Yes sir, seems to check out. Got slight signs of perfectionism on the scanner but other than that the answers seem well within the range of not evil. Lol ok more serious now (but what's the fun in that?). Quite good answers, very well thought out. I would most definitely agree on the Shattering, everything would be... yknow... just a tad different without it. Feruchemy is also a good choice (just as long as you make sure Hemalurgy isn't being smuggled along as well... yikes). We need more things in our world that focus on balance and are end-neutral. And for the last bit... wow... that's thorough... jk jk a fair amount of us are you are in good company here. But seriously, no need to worry everyone is amazing around here and super supportive (and you can always edit your post ). Maybe like 2 weeks would be a good goal for the next post lol
