You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
FriarFritz replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
This has been me for like a year. -
I totally relate to getting distracted by textbooks. Sometimes for a class I've just read the whole textbook the first night, so that I can ignore it the rest of the class. Because I also have uncanny retention of information.

Same, but also a bit of "you didn't see that" in conjunction with struck through text.

I mean, you're not wrong. Reflexive property and all that. At least going by the philosophy that we're all the hero of our own story.

Stereotypical Seattleites: what happens when you take a bunch of stereotypical Canadians and force them to live in the US under a constant drip of rain, and the people at the top of the social ladder are the socially awkward tech nerds. Also, coffee. i.e. they're polite but it kinda becomes passive aggressive due to rain and low average social skills, and they want universal, government-funded healthcare. Also, coffee. From my limited experience (seeing as I didn't grow up here and am a social shut-in), seems pretty legit.

No, jazz bass is the best. Actually, SLAPP is the best, but jazz bass comes a close second.

This sounds awesome. I would love to work on it if I had any programming knowledge.

I think I figured it out: So here it's best to solve using theorems about derivatives, rather than trying to find the limit. For example: The problem here is in your simplification of the fraction. Adding to or subtracting from the numerator and denominator does not create an equivalent fraction (e.g. (2+1)/(3+1) = 3/4 != 2/3 Unfortunately, that requires data and other statistics stuff.

Is this how it should look on paper? I don't think there's a u-substitution opportunity there. But the main problem is that the quadratic on the bottom has complex roots, so any attempt to simplify is going to end up complifying the situation

This looks like it's going to involve complex numbers, and I have not yet learned to do complex calculus. I'm also a bit rusty on integrals

Depending on the type of homework. If it's textbook exercises or something similar, where the point is to help you learn the material, then I will try to do any problems that confound or confuse you, and I'll make sure to explain as much of my thinking as possible. If it's a project or whatnot, where you're supposed to show that you've learned the material, please don't ask me to do that for you. It's dishonest and it could get you into difficult situations. So, the most basic equation for triangle numbers is T_n = T_(n - 1) + n. However, the sequence of perfect squares can be expressed as the sum of two adjacent triangle numbers: n^2 = T_n + T_(n - 1), meaning that we can switch this around to get another equation for triangle numbers: T_n = n^2 - T_(n - 1). Using substitution, we get T_(n - 1) + n = n^2 - T_(n - 1) So: 2(T_(n - 1)) = n^2 - n T_(n - 1) = (n^2 - n) / 2 T_n = ((n + 1)^2 - (n + 1)) / 2 T_n = (n^2 + n) / 2 There you go.

A few days ago I solved a math problem posted by @Zelly, and that actually was the most fun I've had in quite a while. And I realized that it's also the only active learning I've done in a long time. So give me all your math problems. If you need help on an assignment or something pressing, make sure to say so, and I'll try to get to those ones first.

I think my friend took a selfie with Zac Efron. In my Winds class last night we had a guest speaker who's played trumpet in like half of the major motion pictures since the mid-90s. I'm taking bass lessons from Norm Stockton, who played for Lincoln Brewster.

I have ADHD (or ADD, cuz it keeps changing which label is used and whether they're different or not). I take medication for it, which I need not just so I can focus, but for basic social interaction as well. I can tell a definite difference between when I take my medication and when I don't, so huzzah for doctors and pharmacists!

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
FriarFritz replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
I'm really having trouble with college right now. I just haven't been able to do work. I know I've always had a pretty bad work ethic, which kinda weirdly combines with my perfectionism to keep me from doing anything. I can't stand not doing something well, but I can't spare the effort to do it up to my own standards, so I just give up and don't do it. This has become a huge problem for me recently, to the point where I have done almost no assignments in the past week, if any. Even though I need to keep my grades up in order to keep my scholarships which are honestly the only thing that lets me go to this school. I've barely even been practicing my instruments, and I like that. I've just been watching YouTube videos for hours on end. Even if I do sit down to work, my ADD ensures that I'll soon head down the rabbit trail of the internet. I've been staying up too late, not getting exercise, and when I do get exercise, it's basically an excuse to avoid responsibility and listen to music. I feel like I should try to get help, but "I can't do work," sounds really pathetic, like a dumb excuse, even though it might be an actual problem, and not just me. Please, if you have advice, feel free to give it to me. I think I know what I need to do, but someone else telling me to do it will hopefully help motivate me. -

One should never underestimate the power of not sleeping enough. Not only have I used it to finish books really quickly, but also to speak with the little flying unicorns that live under my bed. -
The trouble is that I needed to graph some functions. I think I got it, though. To have a 98% chance of someone having the same birthday as you, you have to go through at least 1,426 people. For a 99% chance, you need at least 1,679. Yes! I did it! Huzzah! Thanks for the problem, I really enjoyed it.

I have returned, and created a better formula! See, I was having trouble figuring out how to find D(x) without just running the sequence (which could get pretty nasty), so I started looking for patterns with low-sided dice (2, 3...), and it turns out you can also find D(x) by this formula: D(x) = n^x - (n - 1)^x So our equation becomes .98 < (365^x - 364^x) / 365^x I think I can solve now. I am wrong. The numbers are too big for Desmos or my calculator. I must find the formula for (a - 1)^x / a^x
