I didn't kill them, Cruz wanted to say, and I wouldn't have, if it hadn't been for Trace. But he didn't. For now, he was quiet.

"For justice," Cruz answered quietly, "I killed them for their corruption, for their crimes, because God is not here to do it."

"You mean, why did I kill the nobles I did?"

"Only to look after her friends," he said, gesturing to Cadenza.

"The creature is taking Trace somewhere, to their Queen. I don't know much more than that."

"At its mercy. I'm telling you, that monster is dangerous, and you'll have to go through it to get to Trace."

Cruz nodded. "With no apparent weakness. It killed five times the number of assassins it took to nearly kill Trace."

"She's got a protector now," Cruz warned, "The very air, sea, and earth obey it. One who stops hearts with a thought."

"On her crimes and whatnot?"

Cruz slowly approaches the colonel. "I have a right to a lawyer, correct?"

Cruz hesitates, but decides it best not to fight back. He sets out his pistols and knives on the ground in front of him and took a slow step away from them.

Cruz raises his hands calmly above his head. "I'm sorry about the deaths," he said, "I'm going to do better. Less collateral."

Cruz smile vanished. "You okay, friend?"

"Well hello there, Colonel," he said cheerfully, "Now, under Raodean law, could I be charged with mass murder if I wasn't actually the one committing the mass murder? If I didn't do any of the actual terrorizing, would the charges carry over?" Cruz does not look over at her.

Cruz brushed his luscious golden locks out of his eyes. "Who's asking?"

"I think they're looking for you," said Lena, "Will you run?" "I... I was told to look after them. I'm at least going to check on them. Who knows? I might make new friends. And even if I don't, I'll still have you." Cruz emerges from wherever the heck he was, with Lena close behind. "Yes?" he asked smoothly, with a snakelike smile.
