Janice sniffed again. "Yes... no." She pulled her cloak around herself. "I'm just scared."

"Jay..." she sniffs, "I don't want it to always hurt so much! I don't want to hurt, and... I don't want to hurt anybody else. It always gets worse... I always come closer and closer to joining whatever those voices are, just to stop the pain. Don't let them get me, because if they do... then I don't know if anyone could stop me."

"Different wand woods are attracted to different kinds of people. See, mine is Hawthorn, which you'll often find in the hands of a person with one true, clear passion. See, but it can't just be your personality that attracts a wand, because people are fluid. There needs to be something more, something... bigger than what you see on the surface. That's what my passion is, Beth, I'm trying to find whatever it is that makes magic magic. Something that makes some wands channel your powers better than others. Something more powerful than spells and curses."
