  1. A wave of power washed over the acolytes, like the pressure all around them had increased tenfold. Kaeni felt her life force flicker and dim, suddenly diluted; she was the candle and this was the fire. Even the mountain's glowing gems and glittering crystals seemed to darken at the sudden presence's absolute dominance. Time warped ever so slightly, and every second seemed to drag for far too long. Kaeni trembled. She wrapped her arms around herself to try to stop her hands from shaking. It finally appeared from around the mountainside with a heavy swoosh of its wings. A titanic head of feathers and antlers, a body like a battleship, claws large and sharp enough to rend a building in two, and the wings spreading out so wide and far... they blotted out the stars, the moon, the sky, the mountain. The wyvern slammed into the mountainside with its talons, cracking into stone and shattering the veins. Each beat of its wings crashed over them with the power of a hurricane, shoving them back into the wall of stone. And then it roared with a hideous shriek, and the entire world went silent save for the perpetual shrillness.
  2. The sludge rippled again, then began to convulse. The pond of purple goop pulled in on itself, tightening up into a ball, then twisted around into a cylinder. The edges convulsed and dripped, and the top smoothed out into a roundish figure. In and of itself, the sludge monster wasn't much to behold. Just a moving, stinking pile of goop. In fact, it was pretty much in its most vulnerable state at the moment--Fadran probably could've taken care of it then and there. But everyone was itching for a fight, it seemed, so he let it shoot tendrils of sludge at its surroundings to grab all manner of junk and armor itself with a body of garbage.
  3. Vance, having noticed how close they'd gotten, decided to hop ahead of the cart and the others to let Quest and Antin know the situation. "Hello!" He called from the woods.
  4. “How would it work? Walk up to this guy’s house and whine at him until he gives us his cactus?”
  5. Fadran cracked his knuckles. “Good. I was worried we wouldn’t have to fight a giant sludge monster today.”
  6. "That kind of thing doesn't happen very often. Monsters with malicious intent are exempt from the gateways to this place, so they never even detect it in the first place. If something were to wander into here, it usually isn't hostile." Fadran gestured to one of the many bags of kleevers. "These things are just survivors, but they happen to produce an awful lot of sludge, which can turn hostile. Like..." The nearby puddle of purple-ish goop rippled over the top. "...Oh."
  7. "Depends on what kind of energy they give off. Most, yes. We retrieve those as well."
  8. "They do, but they register immediately once they come through. We take them out pretty quickly."
  9. Well, uhh...

  10. Another shriek. Louder, closer. Now they could hear the beating of wings. Kaeni squeezed her eyes shut and took deep, panting breaths.
