  1. Kaeni stepped over to look across the names. Eni Valis... Jaren K.... Umbra? Oh... Kaeni dropped her head. They hadn't talked much, but she'd always seemed nice. And Pelteb, too. I never liked Gavin much, but...
  2. Outside was the graveyard of fallen Reapers - and a congregation of other Reapers standing around seven new gravestones that had been added this morning. A moment of silence for the fallen. Kaeni stopped in her tracks. "Oh."
  3. Kaeni grunted as she pushed herself over on her good arm, hopping off the bed. At least her legs could hold her up again, even if her left arm couldn't seem to even move around on its own yet. "Coming, Avi?" @The Bookwyrm
  4. Kaeni un-summoned and summoned it a few times, then let it vanish completely. "So... now we're supposed to guide souls to the Gates, huh?"
  5. Kaeni looked down at her hand, squeezing it in and out of a fist. Something flashed into her vision as she did - a little black symbol. Hang on a minute. She concentrated for a second, trying to remember back to their training. It had been... what, three years ago? Some veteran had Reapers come in to explain proper Scythe usage. "Remember that the first rule of wielding a Scythe is to never use it." They had summoned it into their hand out of seemingly nothing - though that was something of a norm when it came to these people. "It won't just sever someone's soul - it will vaporize it into nothing in just an instant. One cut from refined Morsanite is all it takes to remove a being from existence for all eternity: no second chances, no redos, no justice. These weapons will serve only as an absolute last resort that you must use at your discretion in only the most ensaring of situations, and to harm someone with it - even on accident - will almost assuredly have you removed from the Reaper Corps and executed." The trainers had hammered that into their heads over and over again over the next few years. That wasn't the part Kaeni was trying to remember. It was after that, when they were explaining how to summon it... Kaeni tightened the muscles in her hand, and the black symbol of a scythe faded into existence across the back. The mark of a Reaper. They'd all received it after passing basic training, but it had been stark white then. Now it was darker than the night without moon or stars. Which means... Her Scythe materalized in her hand, black as the ocean at twilight. Heavy, unwieldy - that was fine. Any Reaper to make it past year one could deal with that. But the way it tilted down, tugging against her arm, almost as if begging to be brought down and swung. Suddenly, the absolute gravity of her position became very apparent.
  6. An uncomfortable silence fell. "Y'know... you can trust us." Kaeni laced her fingers together. "We're all friends now, right?"
  7. "Your hound, rather, tried to kill me. It still lives." She stayed her position, flipping her knives in hand. "No heart for your men? As captain you are as their father, yet you bear no hatred against me for slaughtering them."
  8. Kaeni's face fell. She looked away. "Um... sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
  9. "What was that scary ghost thing you were in during the fight anyways?"
  10. She spat out more blood. "Leave now. I won't kill you."
  11. Kaeni shrugged. "I was the first one up. Dunno how long we've been like this."
  12. @Amanuensis @|TJ| I'm down for doing troll protection thingies, though I was also hoping to learn the true purpose of my Confirmed Villager role

  15. "Wow." Fadran sighed, walking over to put the plates back and grabbing actual bowls instead. "What exactly have you been eating that hasn't been served in bowls before?"
