  1. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Hemalurgy The Hemalurgy table has been updated a few times through the years, since some of the 'newer' metals were placed based on suppositions. The Coppermind has the associated power to which I am referring.
  2. I think the -scariest- Hemalurgic Spike is an Aluminium spike. It simply suppresses all abilities. So, you end up shot and dying, and lose all manner of healing yourself. Secondly, A motivated Lord Ruler would be terrifying on a huge scale. The idea that Hemalurgy works as a harsher version of breaths is also pretty terrifying where a spike could hold the same trait multiple times from multiple deaths.
  3. I dunno about simple entropic grind towards chaos. It is referred to as the shard of destruction quite a bit, not least of all by Sazed when he's holding it. Protection/Destruction is the intents he gives for Preservation and Ruin. I do think, however, that Ruin could also just be the closest intent to the command given. I'm sure his status as a Type IV does play some part here, as the amount of investiture just with breaths alone was a huge amount.
  4. Well, The Stormfather says that Sibling is sleeping. Not to worry about him, etc. Oathbringer -does- make the dead spren noise in Dalinar's hands. That is the only bit of information I know of that could say one way or another.
  5. A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
  6. Well, it's not a 'ruin' trait for the spren...they're actively merging spirit webs...
  7. Thanks for the Timeline, I appreciate it!
  8. Are we sure on that timing? I've always had trouble with timelines in this way. I'm sure you are right, but for my edification can I get the reference? So I can do comparisons for future things?
  9. Everyone can kill everyone if you use an Aluminium Hemalurgy Spike! With that in mind, I choose "Fullborn." We really need to see Susebron open up and doooo stuff. I do not believe that Heralds are on the level of Susebron or TLR.
  10. I would agree that it's command is what collected the Ruinous Investiture. ADDITIONALLY, it could be the excess Ruin investiture that Harmony has to keep busy. Since the shards exist primarily in the spiritual realm, such a command could be fueled by any shard, no? I don't -think- this, but I think it is a possible solution. It leaks smoke because Ruin's mist is black smoke. Ruin also steals investiture with the intent of destruction. Whilst drawn it absorbs investiture at a quick rate from the wielder AND the enemies. Additionally, Ruin's investiture could be doing -a lot-. Once cut the victim is disintegrated because the sword -touches blood- with "Intent" to destroy. It's black metal, or began that way...I would NOT be surprised if that black metal has something to do with Atium. (The Pits of Hathsin was the Ruin Singularity.) And MORE? We've only seen people who are heavily invested use Nightblood POV. Or, people who had more than enough reason to be crazy. The talking in the mind is a Ruin trait, And people talk to him "OUTLOUD" in response. More Ruin connections. Again, I don't think this...it's just very interesting once you actually think about all the Ruin connections with Nightblood. Hemalurgy is the thing we know that causes the most damage to the spiritweb, currently.
  11. There are -a lot- of cute things. One of my favorites though is when Vin idly starts petting TenSoon and TenSoon responds "Mistress, I'm not sure how I feel about this." I find it incredibly cute. The budding friendship between an orphan and her immortal puppy.
  12. I think the term is "Interference." Items inside the body are entangling with your spiritual web, or, at least, shrouded inside your spiritual web. The different form of investiture surrounding the metal creates interference for steel/iron allomancy. So it is very related to how much a metal is invested. The same goes for a person in shardplate who has a steel necklace on, the necklace will be shrouded in the shardplates investiture making the necklace nigh-untargetable by steel/iron. TLR (Rashek) DOES push on the metals inside Vin's body, so, it IS possible. You just have to be extremely capable with your form of investiture to push past or through those interferences.
  13. Sorry, I'm just commenting AS things comes up...I think that's appropriate. I'm just going to wait until the end to post the rest. Atium (as a god metal) most likely doesn't actually steal temporal/spiritual effects. More than likely it is the "Super Spike" that steals anything intended. Ruin could -LIKELY- speak to Rashek because his spirit is Ascended. It could also come from his -advanced- Savantism. Insanity allows talking by Ruin due to their distorted spiritweb. Savantisim on that scale -could- cause the same openness. The dramatic effects I took to be because of Hemalurgy was the creation of Koloss, Kandra, Inquisitors, imo. I do not think he -needed- to be spiked in order for Ruin to talk to him because of Kelsier being able to just speak to Spook due to connection/savantisim.
  14. And at 38:38 he said "Stores a Steel Push" ...That's what Nicrosil Feruchemy does, as we understand it. So, for instance, lets say Kelsier is a 4, Vin is a 5, Elend is a 6, TLR is 10... You could, in theory, store your strength in those abilities, and tap them to turn someone at Kelsier's level into TLR in regards to steelpushing for a time. Compounding Allomancy, I believe, will be using Feruchemy to increase your base multipliers. As an example, Vin gains lets' say 3x strength when burning Pewter. If she becomes stronger, then her pewter becomes proportionally more effective. I know they argue against this in Well of Ascension, BUT Ham is talking and he doesn't actually know anything. So, I believe there is a corresponding way to increase "Base multipliers" when it comes to Allomancy. Connection for Soothing and Rioting. Fortune for Atium Shadows, Strength/Speed/Health for Pewter, etc etc. This is, of course, with the assumption that Pewter behaves manipulatively rather than setting your strength to X. I would buy that pewter strength is 2x+5 with x being starting strength. It will raise you to a minimum, after it's use. Personal feelings, could be wrong. It just makes sense that physical allomancy would be effected by physical traits.
  15. Additionally, Feruchemical charge is investiture if it's being tapped. So, you are self-investing, I suppose? And, being a Savant requires him to be burning/tapping a lot of things to keep his physical form together. From the natural presumptions that comes with Savantisim.
  16. Savants are Invested according to WoB. Blightsong Would it be harder for Jasnah to Soulcast a Knight Radiant? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Questioner Would it be harder for her to Soulcast a Mistborn? Brandon Sanderson Yes, investiture resists investiture. It's harder for her to even Soulcast a person than a rock, right? Questioner Is a Mistborn invested? Brandon Sanderson The Mistborn, how their burning the metal, you're right. They are not specifically invested when they are not burning. When the investiture becomes active, the yes. Before, no, you're right on that. Blightsong So Kelsier, he stayed around longer, not because he was invested, but because he had the potential to use investiture? Brandon Sanderson Over time using the magic will invest you, on Scadrial. Most of the power is not coming from, on Roshar the power isn't coming from the person either [he cut himself off, so I assume this is how it works on Scadrial even though he didn't finish his thought] so I'm going to have to back up on that one and say, yes, the Mistborn are as invested as a Knight Radiant, because in both cases the majority, bulk, of the power is coming from somewhere else, but there is the spirit web. Investing the wrong term, but you have all these connections in the spiritual realm, so yanking you away from them, or rewriting them is harder. Questioner Would they be harder with more Stormlight or metals burning? Brandon Sanderson Yes, yes. That would increase the difficulty ratio. For instance, wearing Shardplate is gonna be a great barrier, right, and things like that so yea. The problem is like, Invested is the wrong term for that, their Spiritweb is connected in different ways.
  17. Yeah, I'm doing that in my "Fortune" work right now, and I am going to modify as you suggested.
  18. Yeah, I agree. It just helps to have the mechanisms that put something to use, the fuel, and the storage of it to be distinct. That's my only justification. Because Nicrosil "Stores Investiture" but it does not mean Breath or Stormlight. It means the ability to put those things to use. Which is my only real reason for wanting distinct terms.
  19. Yeah, I think that's the biggest -issue.- Is that Investiture makes up everything...and Investiture is the mechanisim for ...say burning metals on Scadrial. You must have that investiture in your spirit web in order to do so. I could flip the two and it make no real difference in my thoughts, I just like to keep them being distinct words.
  20. Connection Theory: I have started watching the Shardcasts, and there seems to be a lot of -opinions- floating around. I wanted to make a comprehensive theory for my own benefit. I also wanted to work through these examples with hypothetical examples so that there is fewer miscommunications. Terms: This will be where I keep track of Cosmere related terms. Some may not come up, but this is how I've started referring to them within myself. Since differentiating between certain things (mostly Investiture) can get contrived if these things aren't referred to distinctly. Investment: The Apparatus of a soul that puts Investiture to use. Investiture: Magic "Stuff", alternate form of matter and energy. Invested: An entity containing -more- Investiture. Connection: Any link between two perceivable entities. Identity: Spiritweb vibrations that denote separation between the many connections of the web. Base concepts: Connection Types as they pertain to people: Personal: This influence how open to this person's ideas you are, and how likely you are to forgive/accept differences in that person. Land: This influences your feeling of 'home' or comfort and your desire to help/defend/improve that loci. Time: This influences your physical age, recollection, and "Destiny." Items: This influences the items cognitive presence, and can even cause that object to take on a person's identity. In every referenced instance of connection, we presume that connection matters most and moves through the Spiritweb from one identity set to another, and that is as far as impact is made. However, I would posit, that having a STRONG connection to one identity requires weaker connections with -many- things. I do not think a basic connection to a person gives you the ability to speak their language. I think it influences your predisposition for -maybe- -someday- deciding to speak that language, and you have to actively seek out those other connections. HOWEVER, a strong enough connection developed sincerely and over time, will establish those connections to the necessary sources so that language is shared. Example: An English speaker marries a non-English speaker...eventually they begin to form some manner of understanding between them. Which way does Connection work do you suppose? Does person X developing a STRONG connection to person Y give them connections to the connections making up person Y's identity, or does that strong connection to person Y give person X limited access to person Y's connections. I believe the connections should link to Person X, because only that which is denoted on -your- Spiritweb changes you, or connection matters about how far away from the entity in question you are, but that implies movement itself, which is also problematic in a locations don't exist way. I also believe that all things begin with connections to each other. They all have connections to the same three planes of existence. They are all composed of Investiture of the Shards, and all the Shards began as Adonalsium. If everything exists in the spiritual world as a super position, and only the way it happens is always the way it will have had happened....then all things being cosmerologically entangled makes sense...more than not. This will matter much more as "Fortune" comes into play. This is relevant because it shows us how all things -could be- connected, and when strengthening connections that there is no web movement, necessary. Unexplored Ideas and Questions: Connection to Abstracts: Do you believe that the Shards are "Connected" to the abstracts that compose their intent? Do you believe that a person can be "Connected" to the concept of "Honor" or "Evil?" Non-Conscious Connections: Can two objects become so linked that they become one identity? Would this have physical effects, necessarily? For instance, a set of marbles could have been stored together so long that it thinks of itself as the whole of the set, rather than each individual marble. Presume they're made out of metal... If part of the set were pushed would it move the entirety of the set? (I don't think so, I think they are a set whilst stored, and become individuals when apart, just by virtue of how human understanding works.) If a man had a wooden leg for so long that it -became- part his identity...would spiritual healing repair the broken wood? USING Connection: Spiritual Adhesion: I would assert that this STRONG connection to a person, presented by Dalinar, makes many weaker connections to other entities which are important to the beings "Identity." He will have or use connections to the person, homeland, family, and friends to a much weaker extent while the 'faux-connection' lasts. Allowing for 'native-speaker' type speech. Era 2 Medallion: The connection is established with the land rather than a person. This MODERATE connection to the land overwrites your own connections to your own land, and provides weak connections to more things (the people of that land) which is enough weak connections to provide to speak the language filtered through your own identity, thus retaining your accent. This will differ for a "Connection" Ferring, as it will *swap* their connection for their home with the connection they are tapping to make language, allowing them to speak as a native speaker. The accent is a side effect from using investiture filtered through an "Identity"-resonance that is not their own. (Lower case r resonance) Edit Log: Swapped Investiture and Investment Definitions.
  21. Questioner Dalinar can learn languages with the people he contacts. Venli knows all the languages. Could he learn all the languages? And how long would that last? Brandon Sanderson His Connection is going to work-- He has to kind of be active about it, so it needs to be-- let me see if I can get the specific words right... The mechanics I have in the notes is he has to touch someone and will learn to speak the language of their native country, that they spoke as a young person. He's making a direct Connection to that specific person and their way of speaking. So if you have learned another language and Dalinar shakes your hand and activates his Connection ability, he will Connect not to that language you've learned, but to your native language. Questioner How long does it last? Brandon Sanderson I have it lasting-- it does need to be renewed, but I have it lasting basically as long as-- days not months. But I didn't actually put a define on it, so I'm going to say that's not canon. I'm not canonizing that. But I didn't want him to have to keep renewing it every couple of hours. But he would have to do it again if he left and came back. ---- #13 Share Copy Play/Pause Questioner In Bands of Mourning we saw the medallions that can give people Connection to the area that they are in. Two thoughts on that. One… if a person were to get a connection to one of the areas from Elantris would they be able to gain the powers from the area? Brandon Sanderson Yeah that’s a good question, it’s not that easy. But it is an excellent question. Questioner And if there was an area where the primary language was sign language, would a person gain the ability to speak sign language to the people present by using that connection? Brandon Sanderson Yes. It is definitely related to the Cognitive Realm and how people are thinking about language. --------------------------------- Cadmium (paraphrased) Would a Connection medallion work for sign language? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes. Cadmium (paraphrased) Would it make the person's fingers move or would spoken word be interpreted mentally as the appropriate sign? Would it overcome deafness? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Ehhh... It would translate the communication. I can say that. ^Relevance being to what you are connected, and relevance to time of connection. If you leave and come back (x distance) then the connection dissolves. #connection #surgebinding
