I wonder what her actual intentions are, like if her plans are completely confined to Roshar or that she has designs similar to what Rayse-as-Odium's were in terms of thinking of the full cosmere.

    To cultivate the cosmere maybe?

Sazed said in the letters that a shard can't really resist their Shardic intent for too long so assumably something relating to cultivation.

Might be trying to pull a "through war they'll grow stronger" sorta deal but not sure. Honestly what she thought she'd get out of Taravangian ascending we probably won't find out until either book 5 or Brandon lets something slip in a WOB.

Hey that’s my tinfoil hat theory! :) Kalak is a coward who was involved with Gavilar so the leader of the Sons of Honor running away and hiding fit Kalak quite well.

I read someone recently wrote of Brandon that he often does what you expect he just gets to it way faster than you’d ever expect. Odium getting a new vessel was coming, but wow that was fast. Goodbye Rayse we hardly new ye.

I think we are still missing 2 shard names unless I missed them. We were missing 6 and got 4. Whimsy is the most surprising.

real question is in the WOB where Brandon says he'd take ingenuity, was he referring to invention or a different shard?

  3. ROW Spoilers

    Spoiler

Imo I reckon it's probably something to do with the system of restrictions that got imposed on the radiants. They can't further their bond and increase their power until they say a certain oath which then needs to be double checked by the shards Cultivation and Honour. Imo it's supported by what happened when Venli tried to say the second oath but got rejected by Cultivation. Also just that we heard Cultivation respond to a KR's oaths.

I agree with the idea that this was original Tanavast's job for some of the Knights Radiant and the Stormfather picking it up.

I came here just to talk about Invention, because that's litterally where I am in RoW right now. Im spoiling this just because if someone looks at my profile They'd find 'Invention' on it.

Any thoughts on why Harmony might not be able to contact Invention?

On a unrelated note, I wonder how advanced Invention's shard world might be, if Invention does have a shard world.

    Also using a spoiler

    Spoiler

Tbh it could really depend on how the Shardic intent manifests. I could really imagine it as just being inventing anything rather than just things that work, are practical or the best option.
Part 5 ROW spoilers so using another spoiler.

    Spoiler

We know it's not necessarily gonna be the scientific process of invention because Navani describe the mix of stormlight and lifelight as the Rythmn of Science, implying that if combined the Shardic intent would be Science.

Does Shallan and Jasnah have any interaction in this book?

    Was Shallan's past revealed?

I won't be able to get the book for a month and I don't mind spoilers.

    On their interaction.

    Spoiler

You get a little bit but it's pretty much only in part 1 which is already available on the tor website.

    On Shallan's past

    Spoiler

I'm fairly sure we as readers have now been told basically everything. Tho I'm still not sure on the WOB stuff hinting at an unmades influence.

    Spoiler

Spoilers for what that past is. It's a really nice twist that I really do recommend you wait for.

    Spoiler

Once again I am warning you, it's genuinely my second most favourite surprise from ROW and oh boy are their a lot of good surprises in it. It's a lot better experiencing it than knowing beforehand.

    Spoiler

Final Warning. I will be vague in what I say.

    Spoiler

Shallan had a spren before pattern.

    Spoiler

    He does don't worry.

    Spoilers on what it is.

    Spoiler

Tho tbh I was sorta disappointed that main theory in the community of it being about accepting you can't save everyone was right. I was really hoping it'd be more brutal haha.

It was released 24 hours ago in Aus... And we were already 25% through with part 1 ;)

As an Australian I can confirm I foolishly decided to check if I could download it at 1am on the 18th... I did not sleep until 7am, woke up at mid day and then kept reading until I finished it at like 8pm....

Tho I was also trying to get uni work done so that probably slowed me down.

What did you think of Adolin's arc?

I saw Daniel Greene's review and he says Adolin's story felt a bit convenient in this book.

Tbh idm it, tho I'd say it was probably the one I was least invested in. Imo I can definitely see him being the one people refer to when they talked about suddenly being asked to be interested in a certain character. If anything it sorta felt like a bit of a side arc to what was happening with Shallan, like it was her plot but we needed to see from Adolins perspective to understand what happened.

Is the status of the Sibling explained? Is it associated with a shard (like Stormfather & Nightwatcher) or is it just an immensely powerful spren?

You get a pretty good explanation + a whole bunch of cosmere magic world building. Couple of the piece are only briefly mentioned but there's enough in there to have a pretty good picture

This new letter is good for Shard names. 4 new ones in two chapters, holy crap.

    Invention, Whimsy, Mercy, and Valor

Invention send to fit in a creation quadrant along with Preservation and Ruin. Valor seems awfully close to Honor in my mind, so I'm curious what the differences will be as fast as Intent goes.

I'm still digging into part 2, but I was so shocked at how many names we're getting.

I didn't spot any other shards on my read through but you might have better luck than me. Sanderson really did just kinda go "hey, have some shard names".

  10. 4 minutes ago, Eternal Khol said:

Yeah, me too. I didn’t really get a “shardy” vibe from that name, but i was being hopeful

Always good to be hopeful haha.

Also what's your take on the mixture of Odium and Honour being War and the mixture of Honour and Cultivation being Science (possibly, wasn't nearly as confirmed as the other one)?

Science makes sense for Honour and Cultivation tho imo it strays close to Invention and it doesn't really sound shardy.
War sorta makes sense but I was expecting something a bit more surprising I guess.

Also my new crackpot theory is that theirs a rhythm for ever permutation of combining the different shards.

    @scottwo Thanks!

New Shards: Invention is another name for Ingenuity, Mercy is a shard I had predicted (along with Beauty & Justice) so I am glad that one turned out to be correct. I am not sure about where Brandon will go with Whimsy, but it could easily turn into the most terrifying shard to deal with.

@Harkain Hoid will be fine, his plot armor is thicker than all the cosmere books put together.

What did Shallan find when he found/met Restares? Or did she fail? And what did Moash do that has everyone pissed off?

Spoilers in case you haven't finished the book.

    Spoiler

Moash killed our beautiful boy Teft and we shall never forgive him for that. Also yet again trying to convince Kaladin to suicide.

Fairly sure they didn't fail considering the whole Maya thing about both the radiants and their siren agreeing to the recreance. For Restares/Kelek I'd guess it was someone who knew Cosmere stuff/was aware enough to tell her about it apart from Mraize. Also probably that the ghost bloods want Ba Ado Mishram for some reason?

What did you think of Shallan's arc in this book?

Also I'm not too sure. I definitely didn't see the twist coming but I was sorta hoping Brandon didn't go down the path of her losing alters.

I just created an account to say the That I have never hated a character more than Moash in any book I have read.

I also don’t know how I feel about the Odium switch yet but am interested in how it plays out with the book ‘gap’ coming up

I completely and utterly agree with the F**k Moash sentiment. He only makes things worse.

Also thinking considering that Hoid seems to be playing his hand a lot more in this book and that the Big T has figured out a real good way to manipulate him I'm scared for what'll happen in Book 5.

In the Arcanum, Khriss mentions “Foil” controlling the Aethers. so that must be another Shard

Honestly I took that as more the name of a scholarly contemporary of Khriss more than anything.

Tbh. i read the epilogue before these chapters and was very confused by what went down in it, but it all makes sense now

    Just read the epilogue.
    RIP Hoid.

    Spoiler

Also just to double check. After this we only have 14 shard names instead of 16 right? I remember seeing a WOB saying that we'd get all of them in ROW but I'm not sure.

New shard names I spotted where Whimsy, Invention, Valor and Mercy.

  13. Imo I'm thinking the Windrunners fourth oath is gonna be deciding which group of people specifically they are going to prioritise protecting. Sorta like the Skybreakers fourth ideal where they need to dedicate themselves to carrying out a particular a particular crusade. It's gonna be choosing to dedicate themselves to something.

For Kaladin I'm guessing that it'll probably come off the surgeon training and be something along the lines of "I will only protect those that I can".

  14. 1 minute ago, agrabes said:

Kaladin is definitely being hit by either an Unmade or Odium.  Something is keeping him down unnaturally, it seems like his normal coping mechanisms just aren't working at all.  Or maybe this is just what it's like before you hit the 4th Oath for a Windrunner.

Tbh considering Odiums access to fortune it could legitimately just be him telling Moash what to say in order to screw with Kaladin the most. Tho that would also suggest there's a reason Odium would want to target Kaladin specifically.

I am wondering about the new kind of fabrial thing. No fabrial used in the Fourth Bridge is new. Which new fabrial did they develop?

It could be causing what amounts to ecological devastation for the Spren or some other unforeseen consequence? We don't really understand how they reproduce or their role with the ecosystem.

Wait, 5?! I've apparently missed some things, which 5?

I'm about to go into an exam so I'll try and dig out quotes later but.
You've got Nale and Kalak(I think) talking to Elhokar and Gavilar.
Jezrian was at the beggars feast. (Dalinar's perspective)
There's references to Shallash doing shallash things(destroyed art of her) so assumably she's there.(Dalinar's perspective)
There's also theories I've heard that one of the heralds was the assassin Liss that Jasnah talked to.(Jasnah perspective)

My memories hazy tho so I'll need to come back and double check stuff.
