"Storing health? Are you referring to Feruchemy? Or, I suppose you wouldn't know what Feruchemy is. It's one of the Metalic Arts from Scadrial; a method of Investiture whereby you temporarily deprive yourself of a skill or attribute so that you might access it in full force later. The attribute is stored in a piece of metal. If you were a gold Ferring, able to store healing, you would have to spend some time sick before you would be able to tap your metal. Once you had stored sufficient health, though, you would be able to access it in times of need, granting you the ability to quickly recover from nearly any wound."

Ah. So she had noticed, then. "I can't hear you, actually. Seeing as deafness is ingrained into my spirit web, I doubt that anything could really heal it. But I have found a way around it. Perhaps you have heard of the Old Magic, or the Nightwatcher? She granted me the ability to see words that are spoken in my presence. It comes with a price, as do most things, but it's truly what enabled me to do what I have." Of course, Temeria's presence was weakening the power. Her words were already fainter than they had been when she had arrived, and Aln knew that her Stormlight would be similarly ineffective. Somehow, though, she still found herself trying to reconcile with her sister. Why could she not just let her go her separate way, when it would be easier for both of them?

"The name 'Dark Alley' is as old as the Alleyverse itself. There's some speculation on which title came first, actually. Is the Alleyverse called the Alleyverse because it was founded by the DA, or is the DA called the DA because it represents the dark side of the Alleys?" Aln had to cut herself off before she went further. Temeria had asked for an explanation, not a research paper. "As for seeking them out," she continued, "I would advise against it. If you are nonetheless determined to try, there are various methods of getting their attention. You could always try just walking into an Alley and asking for a cookie, but that may get you more than a chat."

"Well," said Sarah, "now that we've decided that none of us are going to die, shall we proceed?" @AonEne @I think I am here.
-
"I'd love to," said Sarah. "If that's okay with you, Wes." @I think I am here.
-
Sarah turned her smile on Wes. "Hey, Wes! I'm Sarah. It's nice to meet you." She thought for a moment. "I feel like the name should be a little more scientific. Something that's either way too descriptive, like 'the Large, Glowing, Cave Worm Soother', or not nearly descriptive enough, like the 'Bridgewater Worm'." Her grin made it clear that the comment was a joke. @AonEne @I think I am here.

I have to say, Moash was never one of my least favorite characters when I read the book. I mean, I was hardly rooting for the guy, but there were even moments when I kind of liked him. He provided an interesting contrast of perspective to Kaladin and the rest of Bridge Four, which only grew more pronounced as he began to fully side with the Parshendi. The action of his that I hated the most was killing Jezrien, which struck me as hugely tragic, and even then I blamed Odium more than Moash himself. When I showed up here and saw all the Moash hating, it legitimately confused me. I think I can understand why it's such a big thing, though. Kaladin is many people's favorite character, which is understandable. His is the first viewpoint we're introduced to, and, as has already been mentioned on this thread, he's the most clearly heroic character that we've got. And the thing with Moash is that he comes the closest to taking that away from him. With Moash, we see what Kaladin could have been, and we don't like it. And, as Kaladin begins to listen more to Moash's influence, we begin to fear what could happen to our hero. In a way, it's a relief when he turns fully villainous and we're free to outrightly hate him. So we get a fandom full of people saying, "Yeah, Moash is awful! We hate him so much! Kaladin could never be like him. ... Right?"

"I was trying to come up with some," she confessed. "Turns out I'm really rusting bad at naming things. Best I came up with was the 'Still Water Worm'. You know, because it came from the water, and it stills your emotions." She shrugged. "Like I said."
-
Sarah grinned back. "Agreed. If nothing else, we have to appreciate the genius of whomever came up with them. Speaking of names, does that worm thing have one yet?"

Sarah stared at the girl who had just approached. A Mistborn. Most of the terms she hadn't understood, but Mistborn she knew. The light emanating from her tablet, as they had called it, shifted, and she turned her attention back to it. Based on the other ACE employee's description, it was just a tracker dot moving. Sarah looked back up, then glanced at Myriad. She had met the woman yesterday, and took a few steps over to her. "So, this is pretty crazy, huh?" She asked. "A Mistborn, an ... Epic, and a giant worm. This party's already off to a great start." She didn't mention the casualties, but the knowledge still hung like the mists over every conversation. @AonEne

Metal nails. In the context of Mac Thorstenton, that could only mean one thing. "They're called Hemalurgic spikes," Aln said cautiously. "They're used to transplant the abilities of others onto yourself. However, the process to produce them is rather gruesome, and usually results in death, which is why Hemalurgy is considered one of the most unsavory form of Investiture." She paused for a moment, considering, then continued, "The Dark Alley, or DA, is known for its widespread use of Hemalurgy, often without consent. This is largely why you won't find a particularly favorable view of that organization in most circles. There's a whole guild dedicated to opposing them, among other things."

Sarah raised her had. "I'm a Bendalloy misting, and I have some scouting experience. Um, what's texting?" @ZincAboutIt

Aln regarded her sister. Only a few hours, and she was already on speaking terms with Mac Thorstenton. And Aln had thought that starting a guild after a few months was fast. Interestingly, she hadn't seemed surprised that Aln could, if not hear, understand what she was saying. Well, Aln was not about to bring it up if Temeria didn't. "An Elantrian is someone who's been invested with the Dor," she answered. "They're from Arelon, on Sel. Basically people just wake up and they've been transformed into immortal beings, with silver skin and hair, that can use magic. It's rather similar to becoming a Returned, if you like, just without the dying bit. Why?"

Aln carefully noted both Temeria's reaction to Mac and her vague answer. Idris. Despite spending some time on Nalthis, Aln had never been to Idris, herself. The most interesting investiture, quite frankly, was in Hallandren. "I? I discovered this place about nine years ago. Someone must have left an Alley open or something, so I stepped from the warcamps on Roshar to the Alleycity here. I fell in with a group of worldhoppers, and spent quite a while traveling the Cosmere and the Earths. I only settled back here a little under a year ago." Perhaps that was more detail than Temeria had asked for, but the answer should satisfy her. "How long have you been here?"

Sarah stood, shaken, several feet removed from the rest of the group. The adrenaline from the fight had faded, and she was left with a corpse and the conspicuous absence of many of her coworkers. Someone- Sarah had never gotten her name- had explained to her how Karin had survived, but Sarah had hardly understood half of the words used. Clearly she had much more to learn about this place than she had thought. She turned away, shuddering, as Karin began to eat the worm. Most people were deep in conversation, and so she hefted her pack and wandered to the far side of the cavern, running her finger along the wall. No one seemed to object, so after a moment she sat down and began to carefully draw her map, including a small symbol to show the presence of at least one giant worm. This thing needs a name, she thought to herself. Glow-worm? No, I think that's already a thing. Um. A Soothworm. A Still Water Worm. Her train of thought was cut off when, across the cave, the worm's corpse suddenly vanished, a wave of water appearing in its place. She stood up and began to jog over, nervous. Was that the worm's doing? No one else seemed concerned, though, and so she stood awkwardly for a moment. She wasn't sure exactly what she was supposed to be doing; when she had applied for a job, she had expected much more ordering about. Instead, no one really seemed to care what she did. She bounced on her heels for a minute, then hesitantly walked up to Director Stancel, who was clearly in charge. "Um, excuse me," she said, "But is there something I'm supposed to do? Like mapping the caverns or something?" @ZincAboutIt

"Famous is a bit of an understatement. He's a DA leader, and one of the people that created this world. Some even consider him a god." There were several comfortable armchairs in a corner, grouped around a low table, and Aln seated herself in one. She watched as Temeria glanced around the shop, uncertainty and curiosity evident in her face. Part of her was still marveling at seeing her sister here. She was so different from that timid little child that her mother had favored. How had this happened? "So, how did you end up here?" Aln asked. "And where did you get that clothing?" Her eyes flickered to the sword again, but she made no comment on it.

"Mac Thorstenton? How in the storms do you know Mac Thorstenton?" She stepped back, gesturing Temeria inside as a draft of cold air drifted through the open door. Aln glanced at her bookshelf. She was sure that she had a volume on Mac somewhere.

Sarah jumped as Karin was pulled, alive, from the stomach of the now dead worm. She had seen the woman get eaten. How had she survived? She ran over to the corpse, peering at it. No one else appeared to be emerging. "How under Harmony are you alive?" She asked, staring at her aquaintence. @kenod

Aln didn't know how to react as her sister described their childhood. She hadn't realized how much emotion still lingered from her family until Temeria had appeared. As Temeria spoke, Aln realized something terrifying. Her words were faded. It was slight, after ten years of no contact, but it was there. Aln took a deep breath, trying to regain control. The entire situation felt like an attack, a prank by some cruel gods, designed to strike her where it hurt most. Relief welled to the surface as soon as Temeria moved the conversation away from the past. Aln could handle talking about the guild. A hint of pride shone in her eyes as she said, "If you're looking for information, you've come to the right place. That's why I founded this place, after all. If I may ask, who sent you?" She instinctively fell back into her usual manner; friendly, inquiring, and professional. There was no time for an emotional crisis when she had a guild to run.

Temeria's words dropped into the air like the blows of a hammer, and Aln took another small step back. How could she explain? Temeria's eyes were full of hatred, so different from how they had been when she left. "Torenat is still on Roshar," she managed to say. "He was wounded in the war. He... he said that he went back to visit a couple years ago, but you were gone." Temeria's clothes, colored in the plain Idrian style, were faded and worn, and the way she carried her sword had a familiarity born of practice. Surely she can't have been to Nalthis, Aln thought, searching for answers in her sister's face. Not Mother's Temeria. She tried not to think of the implications of that carefully tended sword. Tried not to imagine her innocent little sister killing. She failed. Temeria's last words still hung in the air. As usual the two of you together against the rest of the world? Images came to her mind: Torenat, laboriously teaching her to speak once her mother had finally given up, his script uneven and slow; Torenat's triumphant grin when he finally bested her at Stones; Torenat sneaking into the library just before a highstorm so he'd have an excuse to stay with her; Mother's silent shouts when Torenat was discovered writing, and the tears in his eyes; Torenat carefully counting spheres in preparation for their journey to the Nightwatcher's valley, a half-packed bag spilling onto the floor; Torenat lying bloodied on a crowded stretcher, stormlight refusing to come to his aid; Torenat handing her a spanreed in an old wooden case as she prepared to leave Roshar behind. "It was never the two of us against the world," she found herself saying. "It was always the world against the two of us." Another memory crept quietly into her consciousness: Temeria, holding her hand all one dark night, while a highstorm raged without. It had been soon after Torenat's conscription. Aln looked her sister in the eyes. "Against the three of us."

Aln may not have been able to hear the bitterness in her tone, but anger was smeared across her face. The same panicked part of her mind told her to run, and this time we was a little more inclined to listen to it. Indeed, she took an involuntary step backwards when she noticed the sword at her sister's waist. "I assure you," she said stiffly, "This is no joke. How have you come to the Alleyverse?"

Welcome to the Shard! We're glad you're here. Quick request: could you hide spoilers under the aptly named spoiler tags? It wasn't a problem for me personally, but I wouldn't want a new reader to have the climaxes for most of the major books ruined because they read an intro thread. @Honorless @Michael Marssen

Sarah dropped her speed bubble and dashed forward. Around her, the cave erputed into chaos, the noise nearly overwhelming. She gasped as she saw Karin swallowed by the worm, and she readied her stick with a new determination. She realized dimly that her emotions were not nearly as suppressed as they had been, but she chalked that up to the fact that she was now aware of and resisting the Soothing. Rather than worry about it, she ran up to a man who was huddled behind a rock. Burning her bendalloy again, she enveloped them both. @xinoehp512
