  1. "Ruin is powerful indeed. I would... like to see your past. May I enter your mind?"
  2. "Ember..." Star muttered. "Memories." Ember gave Heather Shadow's memories.
  3. TVG gently prodded at Heather's mind. She is damaged, she said. Star's eyes widened. "Shadow...?"
  4. Star exited Shadow's mind, and gaped at the damage. The burns looked... decayed. Rotting. Flecked with ugly black. They looked utterly agonizing.
  5. Not if I destroy you first. Star wrapped the Sliver of destruction in one of her forcefields. And began to crush it down.
  6. Star regarded the inky black force in Shadow's mind and took it in her ethereal, Narritive hands. It's killing her, Star thought. I need to draw it out.
  7. Shadow, Star thought sadly, you just need to let me in.
  8. TVG took Shadow's mind in her hands gently and whispered peace. She couldn't heal the injuries - such a thing would be in violation of her oath of noninterference - but she could ease them. She let Star into Shadow's mind too. You can help her as well. I... All right. Star tried to pour out her love for Shadow. They wanted her to stay. Star did, at least.
  9. I will help. If you will accept my assistance.
  10. "I understand how you feel. I know burns well." She sighed. "TVG? Can you help?"
  11. "You would join the chaos; there's no telling what would happen to you."
  12. "It was not my intention to damage you so sev-" "Ember, she does not want to hear from you right now. Shadow, I... I don't even know what to say."
  13. "Give her the memories, Ember. Don't hide a thing." Ember complied, feeling ashamed.
  14. Star shook her head. "Ember, you-" "I was just doing what I was written to do!" Ember said. "I feel bad. I'm not as impassive as you might think."
  15. Star looked at Ember, fury written on her face. "Why did you do that?" she said, horrified. "She was hurting you, I-" "No!" Star said. "No, you don't get to say anything. She was using words. You had no right to do that, not to defend me or anyone else. She has been hurt enough! Look at her and see what you have done." Ember regarded Shadow blankly. Then her eyes widened. "I only meant to... I didn't mean for such damage." "The hell you did," Star swore. "I don't care what you meant to do. You hurt her." "No-" "I don't want to hear it. You're a Narrator - heal her." "I have never-" "Get down on your knees. And Narrate." Ember knelt as commanded, looking over Shadow's injuries. She really hadn't meant to hurt her that badly at all. Send a message, sure, but this... She looked at her hands, at the rippling air around her. "I cannot." "Ember, I-" "Her injuries will only worsen." "Get. Over yourself. They're just words." Ember closed her eyes tightly. And spoke. It wasn't quite like speaking though. More like... painting. Adding to the story. The damaged skin, muscle, and bone on Shadow's body from the wounds Ember had inflicted began to heal. It would take time, but with a Narrator's words on her side, the process would be sped up.
