About Ivory, I love how he speaks and I kind of thought that it was just how inkspren talk in general. Kind of "is" or "is not" as in "black" or "white". It would be cool if the two black and white spren at the Oathgate were both inkspren (or white-out spren, ha). Now I really want to hear other inkspren speak to see if they speak differently... I thoroughly enjoyed this miniseries of episodes on The Knights Radiant! Listening to it while drawing was great so thank you for the good work and keep at it

What you don't want from the next book?
Messydesk replied to MistboreD's topic in Stormlight Archive
I guess the irrational part is mostly that it'll be sudden and with no explanation (like just killing him randomly in a highstorm like he was supposed to die in the early drafts of WoK), which I know won't happen since I trust his death will have some kind of meaning in another character's arc (probably all the main ones). From what I've read from WoBs and theories, I personally believe there will be 50/50 chance of him living through book 5. -
What was your disappointment in this series?
Messydesk replied to Italik's topic in Stormlight Archive
At first I thought I didn't have any disappointments worth mentioning, but then I remembered that I actually started a thread about the lack of screentime on Adolin and Shallan's wedding soooo I guess that counts:'D -
What you don't want from the next book?
Messydesk replied to MistboreD's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't want to see a redemption arc for Moash either since I think he's a good antagonist. Though I can't help but think he would make an acceptable casualty for Kaladin's Fourth Ideal (if we go with the assumption he needs to admit and accept that he can't save everyone). No more love-triangles either, I was so happy the one we had got solved in Oathbringer. Sure there could and should be bumps in the relationships but let's not go back to something that has been solved. Also, I don't want to see a random female character becoming Kaladin's love interest. If he finds his love eventually I want it to be a character we know before they get together, like we did with Shallan and Adolin (Dalinar and Navani were a special case since they knew each other from the past and Dalinar was very against the idea of him courting her). I don't mean it has to be a character that has been introduced to us already in books 1-3, but I do want to learn to know the character at least few chapters before Kaladin falls head over heels for them... I also agree with the solo missions, I love the character interactions and would hate to see them going on their own ways or spend the whole book in the same little groups. I would also hate to not see Zahel/Vasher's reaction when Szeth brings Nightblood near him. The one year skip kinda makes me fear we'll miss that kind of small but important events. And I don't want Adolin to get killed yet. I have this irrational fear of Adolin getting killed off suddenly like some characters have in the past (outside Stormlight Archive). -
I put the year of the WoB in the link text exactly for this point, it's relatively fresh WoB and in the middle of 2016 the outline for Oathbringer (and Adolin's part in it) was already done (Just a few days after that WoB Brandon said he had finished writing part two of Oathbringer). I don't think he would've done drastic changes after that so I believe his stand on what he said there still holds. But, as you said, to each their own. There are many people supporting both sides of this topic.

I agree that they need all the Radiants they can find but I don't think that would be a good enough argument for Adolin to become one even though he's a good duelist. I don't think his ability to fight matters in reviving Maya and other spren don't try to bond with him due to Maya being dead. Maya also has a bond with Adolin, not a Nahal bond but Shardblade must be bonded with to be able to summon and dismiss it. Also, not everyone in previous Desolations became a Radiant, there were lots of regular soldiers too I believe. In a WoB from 2016 Brandon says "I need Adolin because Adolin is the guy who is not gaining all the magical powers and flying in the air and stuff. I need the guy who is more normal. As normal as the prince of Alethkar can be. I needed him and I really liked where he went after doing that, so." And since Brandon also keeps Adolin's future strictly a RAFO I believe there is a third option for him. What if Adolin's bond with Maya evolves into something that lets him summon Maya instantly but not become a Radiant? Maybe Maya becomes partly conscious? Spren are not human so maybe they can be "kinda dead"? Okay that's just me not knowing where this is going anymore buuuuuuut yeah. xD I mean, it's Brandon, I'm 95% sure he'll surprise us. Again.

Ah that changes it then... I had to look up the word while reading since English is not my first language and thought it was the first translation I found for it, not the second. Thanks for clearing it up!

I like OP's theory and if I remember correctly Jasnah's expression was "nonplussed" when Adolin saw her after with "a fading glow and geometric shapes outlining her". One could think that it was her first time using the Shardplate she acquired after swearing the 4th Ideal and being surprised how it worked (since the Plates before had been those taken from past Radiants and powered by infused gemstones). The plural form Brandon used when talking about on screen Radiants with Plate was probably referring to the visions Dalinar saw? The first one in TWOK had two Radiants dropping from the sky in full armor, the same vision is seen second time in Oathbringer when Dalinar requests it (this time he's playing the part of one of the Radiants).

I'm three weeks away from turning 28 and picked up Mistborn last summer, then read everything else cosmere related during the next half a year. Best thing apart from the actual stories is that these books have got me back into drawing as well:D

This and also the fight in Thaylen city where Adolin leaves the thunderclast to Renarin and other Radiants and goes to save a small kid (who's being forgotten in the mids of all fighting). That said, I don't want Adolin to become a Radiant since I really like his character being the "regular" guy reminding us that being a Radiant is not the norm. I'm a bit afraid of "power creep" happening in the books (I do trust Brandon to write well and avoid the neverending power ups) and having Adolin as a non-Radiant main character who still fights alongside the Radiants would keep the sense of danger there. Especially when he can't heal himself like Radiants can. Of course, there is sense of danger whenever Stormlight runs low or out completely. But still, I do wish to see Adolin struggle a bit more with his "I used to be an important person but now I seem very insignificant compared to the Radiants, am I good enough?" I do hope he revives Maya and something interesting and unexpected would happen. I thought that maybe Adolin would somehow revive her without forming a bond and then would tell her "you're free to do whatever you want" but then I remembered that WoB about Maya probably bonding with Adolin if she was alive so... Yeah. I just hope he won't get killed in the process.

One of my not-so-secret wishes is for a rematch between Hoid and Kelsier where Kelsier would have his powers back (and more). And I would also vote for Kelsier. Always. *highfive*

My coping mechanism while waiting for Stormlight 4
Messydesk replied to Mailnaise's topic in Stormlight Archive
This is really cool! I think I might have a slight problem too since two nights ago I saw a dream where the progress bar had gone up to 2% which made me so happy in the dreamxD When I woke up and remembered the dream I actually laughed out loud at how happy I had been in the dream for such a silly little thing...- 25 replies

Wax and Wayne has only one book left to go (I wish there were be more;_; But he needs to move on to Era 3 eventually so no can do, and 4 books were already 3 more than he intended to haha). I wouldn't be completely against another author writing in the cosmere as long as it would be someone Brandon trusts 100%. I like the idea of Isaac Stewart writing in the cosmere like @Argent mentioned. Let's not forget though that Brandon does already have assistants helping him out with all the work outside straight out writing, his assistants are doing a lot of work with math (like calculating the currency of spheres in SA) and dates (Rosharan calendar is cool but lots of work too) etc.

Sooo since the small note I made on my latest Brandon meme post sparked an interesting conversation about wedding ceremonies and how they go wrong so often in the cosmere books I thought starting its own thread would be appropriate. So far I think only Raoden and Sarene's final wedding in Elantris has been the only wedding ceremony we've seen "on screen" without getting interrupted or shortened to "we have this person here to witness us saying yes". At first I thought it funny how something always happened to interrupt the ceremony (and even though I felt bad for Sarene in the beginning of the book I did chuckle at the fact we skipped her wedding because her husband had "died"). After getting invested to the characters, especially Adolin and Shallan, through multiple books and see their relationship develop and build up little by little I do wish to see a proper wedding ceremony where the characters can have one day of happiness together without fights or embarrasment... @Elandera brought up a good point (in the meme thread) about wedding ceremonies being boring to read if they follow the same formula we see in real life and thus they are skipped to save pages for more important and interesting events in the books. Personally I would still consider the wedding ceremonies interesting content since they are happening in a different culture and the inner thoughts of characters we are used to seeing in trouble or battles are interesting to read in this kind of life changing situation. I liked the description of a Survivorist wedding ceremony. And of course, the other characters' reactions and interactions with the couple would be fun to read about. Of course, I don't think making the wedding ceremony short is always bad, I really liked how Dalinar and Navani did it in their circumstances. But I guess I'm just still salty about Adolin and Shallan's wedding getting cut off right when it was getting good:'D I know Oathbringer was already a mammoth-of-a-book but still;_; (I was going to write "to fit it in we can throw away--" but couldn't find anything to end the sentence with since I love the whole book>_>) Anyway, what do you think? Will we ever see a proper on screen wedding ceremony with detailed descriptions and that won't go wrong or otherwise get interrupted in the cosmere again:D? Or maybe we could get a wedding ceremony on screen and the after party would get absolutely destroyed? (Also sorry for any typos, I'll fix stuff later if needed, I'm writing this in a hurry>_>)

That's the thing though, I would've loved to read Shallan and Adolin's wedding because it would've been possibly something different from what I've already witnessed in real life. I really love Roshar and its different cultures, not to mention its characters and their interactions. And I enojyed reading the beginning of Wax and Steris' wedding before it went wrong because I love the characters and would've loved to read about a wedding where everything went well. I should've probably started a new thread for this discussion since this is a meme thread, sorry>_> I just didn't think that little note would've sparked interest in discussing the topic in more detail. I'll make the thread later today in the cosmere section unless someone beats me to it.

Some more (low effort) memes in the cosmere. I have too much time in my hands. I finished reading Elantris today: Couple of memes from Roshar since I intend on diving back there soon: And couple from Mistborn Era 2 since I just love Wax and Steris: I wonder if Brandon has something against writing wedding ceremonies that don't get ruined? The weddings that go through without too much hassle are skipped instead of fully written out (like Adolin and Shallan's) or the characters get married without an actual proper ceremony (Vin and Elend, Wax and Steris' second attempt).

Secret Project Announced: Magic: The Gathering Novella
Messydesk commented on Argent's article in Brandon and Book News
Ooooh this looks interesting! I don't play MtG (12 years ago I tried but my friend didn't do a great job explaining the rules to me so I left my deck on my bookshelf until I gave it away to a MtG enthusiast) but this novella seems like something I'm going to enjoy:D And it'll be free o.o -

I love you all so much for doing this Shardcast episode! I haven't been in the "fangirl" mode in years and I laughed out loud more than a few times while watching this. My crushes would probably be Kelsier, Wax, Kaladin, Adolin, and Vasher. And Denth, highfive @FeatherWriter! Don't worry, I'm as corrupt as you are. I do love Steris as a character a lot and while I was reading the Era 2 books I was writing down notes and I remember writing "I'm starting to like Steris more and more" when I was reading Shadows of Self. By the end of Bands of Mourning I had completely fallen in love with her character and hope she'll have her dream wedding with Wax in the next book. I hope Wayne gets over his dislike of Steris in the next book too. From 41:20 to 42:20 I'm fairly sure @Argent is daydreaming about Jasnah. I also thought I had heard the best part of the cast already until this gem: "Sazed and Tindwyl can both be beefcakes if they wanted to." That cracked me up and I can now go to sleep in peace.

...oh Rusts, you're right.

I finally got around watching this one! It was so interesting (and fun!) to listen to you all give different pronunciations for the names since my language (Finnish) works quite like Japanese or IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) where one letter (or syllable) has its distinctive sound and is always pronounced the same way no matter which letter is next to it. So a Finnish pronunciationcast would be really boring... Catacendre's meaning is actually written in the trivia section on coppermind. I learnt about it while working on VenDell's article so thanks to whoever wrote it there. (Also, as a side note, I love to look for meanings/origins behind the made up words and cultures. I have a document on my drive about the similarities and differences between glyphs and kanji, plus some other neat references to the East Asian cultures like Bridge Four, which is a pet project I work on every now and then while reading the books.) I agreed most often with Alyx on the shardcast I think. Here are some words I found very interesting! I wrote the way I pronounce the words in IPA next to the word. (I tried to keep this as short as possible!) Marasi [mɑrɑsɪ] When I heard all the choices for Marasi and then the way Brandon says it my jaw dropped. I had never even thought there could be different ways for pronuncing her name... But I really like the nod to Mare there. Adolin [ɑdɔlɪn] or [eɪdɔlɪn] I have a major conflict with pronuncing Adolin... When I read the books I pronounced his name as [ɑdɔlɪn] but when I say it out loud I try to say [eɪdɔlɪn]. I have this weird thing where I involuntarily associate colors with letters, words, and weekdays (called synesthesia if anyone wants to look it up) so I read the name as it would be read in Finnish ([ɑdɔlɪn]) but my brain associates the word with green. My brain associates the word [eɪdɔlɪn] with light yellow/blond and since Adolin's hair is blond with some black I try to say [eɪdɔlɪn] so I imagine the right color... Otherwise I just imagine Alm from Fire Emblem>_> Jasnah [jɑsnɑh] I always thought the way I pronounced Jasnah was wrong but seems like that's not actually the case which makes me happy! Sadeas [sɑdeɑs] As with Jasnah's case, I always thought my way of reading this name was wrong too and switched it to [seɪdɪɪs] which I thought was the intended way but now I'm back to [sɑdeɑs]. Good thing he's dead though, like Eric mentioned! Aarik [ɑɑrɪk] and Cusicesh There is a brand named Aarikka in Finland so I pronounce it like thatxD And "kusi" is a crude way of saying urine in Finnish so... yeah, I'm very immature. Some random notes at the end: I actually pronounce Renarin as Alyx used to! With a strong R sound though. I also agree with Alyx on Moash, though Ben's way is also very convincing! Urithiru is really difficult to say in Finnish too so I prefer saying it more like a Japanese would say it (like Mi'chelle mentioned). Bae-Ado-Mishram made me laugh, thanks Ian and Eric! And BaAM. Moelach just makes me thing Japanese ”moe” (萌え). Don't judge me! Anyway, I really enjoyed this shardcast and really hope there'll be a pronunciationcast part 2! Good job all:D ps. The cat was adorable:3

Kelsier's death hit me like a truck... It was my first Sanderson book and I knew nothing about it before hand. I fell in love with the characters and snuggled cozily in the bubble of "main characters can't die yet since this is a trilogy". Boy was a wrong. The other big "oh please no, no!" moment for me was when My heart also broke a little when I read Kaladin's first squad in The Way of Kings getting murdered. When I was reading Words of Radiance I was so afraid of Dalinar dying. I was constantly readying myself for that and when Szeth sent him up flying I thought "nooooo not Dalinar;_;" and when Kaladin saved him I think I laughed out loud in relief.

Finally had the chance to listen to this shardcast fully and it was so worth it. The "who's that cosmere character" quiz at the end is amazing everytime. I managed to finish reading Warbreaker yesterday too so the topic of this shardcast was perfect. I really hope we'll get to see Zahel and Szeth talk about Nightblood in the next book since there would be good opportunities for them to meet I think? Zahel trained the Kholins' sons and is a respected swordmaster so now that Szeth is Dalinar's bodyguard maybe Dalinar will ask Zahel to spar/train with Szeth. Or maybe the soldiers just talk about a scary black all-destroying crazy sword that Dalinar's new bodyguard wielded on the battlefield and Zahel hears about it too. Oooor if Szeth just brings Nightblood close enough for Zahel to hear it ("O hai vasher, I destroyed a lot of evil, are you proud of me now?"). Also Sword-nimi as a name is funny since in Finnish "nimi" means "a name" so everytime I read Szeth say it I read it as "sword-name-goes-here".
