    Vin mentioned she could feel something when she burned Sazed's metalmind but couldn't access it. It wasn't unkeyed though. What time happen if an alomancer burned an unkeyed metalmind? Could they access that attribute like tapping it, but not store it since they weren't a feruchemist themselves, perhaps enhanced like for a compounder, or would they just get the power of the metal? Like, could the alomancer just like deage while actively burning an atium mind, but only as long as they were burning, or would they just get the power of atium?

    Do we know whether overmastery making you a more powerful sandmaster was known by the mastrels, and it was sort of a test to see who would push themselves that far while being warned not to, or did Kenton discover its effects? I presume it was just so rarely done, and then only by people who pushed the limits who already had a lot of power?

    Okay, so it's clear Metal has specific effects on magic throughout the Cosmere based on Dawnshard and RoW. I was just wondering whether that might be true of all magic focuses. It just so happens that Scadrial was a world where the uses of those effects were the heart of the magic system and directly either using those metals as attribute batteries (Feruchemy and Hemalurgy) or realmatic keys (Allomancy) was the main basis of the magic system. Oaths seem to be realmatic keys on Roshar, as people who swear them get infused with stormlight that wasn't already in the physical realm, so there's a parallel there. It seems hemalurgy removes a spiritual connection to a certain attribute and grafts it somewhere else, and we saw Ishar almost do that to Dalinar and his connection to the Stormfather with spiritual adhesion. Most of that was an aside though. Metal seems to have particular effects on magic on Roshar, especially obvious in fabrials, but probably not limited to them. Do we think color might have effects like that, like for awakening, we know you need color, but maybe they're doing it bluntly, and the specific color drained might allow you to do certain things with less breath if the color matches the effect, which is related to gem colors being necessary for certain things for soulcasters, but with enough stormlight, a real lightweaver or elsecaller can probably soulcast with wrong color gem, it's just far less efficient and takes more soul negotiating? So could color have an effect on magic on Scadrial somehow or on Sel, or could specific crystal lattice structures be better for conducting stormlight for specific things? I'm not sure if these questions are clear, but I'm thinking about a lot.

    Brief spoiler for Rhythm of War. Shallan suggests I think in part 2 that she could get herself physically into Shadesmar without using a perpendicularity like Jasnah did in WoR, but she couldn't get back without one, while elsecallers could get back with enough stormlight, or actually a variable amount of stormlight depending on where you are in Shadesmar. I had assumed that getting physically into Shadesmar involved the surge of transportation, and that lightweavers were only particularly good at seeing into Shadesmar to soulcast, though through Kaladin we've seen that other orders can see into Shadesmar. Is Shallan right that other orders, at least lightweavers, could get into Shadesmar physically? If so, does that mean transportation is not involved in getting into Shadesmar, but only in getting out? I think we need to see a little more what that surge does.

    I suspect it's even more complicated than that and different healing has different effects (I don't think gold feruchemy does this, no matter how much is stored up but Brandon said it would heal a shardblade wound). I also don't think progression healing would do this. These seem to work in different ways. I don't think there's super clear WoBs though about this.

    Did the Reshi king, who has been biologically female, but was touchy about being called king and not queen, transform into a biological male after bonding a spren a being able to heal to a (male) spiritual ideal, having apparently previously been trans, or did I just imagine that? Is there another interpretation?

    I tried to search WOBS but couldn't find this: does Aluminum Glow in the Scadrial Cognitive Realm Like Other Metals? If you etched a message in aluminum foil, could Harmony, or a being in the cognitive realm read it?

    Based on WOBs, we know people not from Nalthis are not Drabs, but if someone not from Nalthis gets one breath and then gives it away, does this still hold true? Is the breath less intertwined with their soul than a Nalthian and this they have about a Nalthian level of soul, or just slightly less, even without a breath, or would having gotten a breath open them up to becoming a drab? I suspect the answer to that is know but I wanted to check to see if everyone agreed.

    My head canon, derived from this unsure WOB and the fact that the heightenings aren't exactly plateaus but more a linear progression, is the amount of breaths lost would matter to this. I think rapid ag aging would happen if you go from 5th heightening to drab, but if you dip one breath below 5th heightening, you might agree slightly faster than a normal person at that point to catch up but I don't think it would be noticeably faster.

    I suspect this is true, but do we know this for sure? I mean, do we even know for sure what voidbinding is? Is it just surgebinding powered by odious investiture? Is it another system, but there are dark surgebinders, like those that use forms of power? I don't think that's all worked out yet. The magic is interchangeable anyway. Vasher is living on stormlight instead of breath right now. A Nahel bond on Roshar seems to facilitate becoming invested, and I'm not sure a Spren being of Odium at any point would have made that not so. Brandon's said we don't fully understand what the bond with nightblood, or what a bond with a Seon, would do on Roshar, but it would have some effects. I tend to think Voidbinding is what the fused and royals do, but I don't think it's what Renarin does, at least not with progression--it might be what's powering whatever else is going on with him. I don't think intent matters without the Radiants though--Radiants are controlled by needing to keep their oaths, but other magic systems in the Cosmere can work against their shards intent. Certainly, Allomancy can be used to be very ruinous, even if it's not meant to be so, without weakening one iota. I suspect without the oaths to bind them, surgebinders could and were potentially very destructive.

    So I'm chugging along in my full Cosmere reread in preparation for Dawnshard and Rhythm of War, and I'm on I think the third Eshonai interlude. The parallel I noticed is, Eshonai seems clearly not to be herself, but to be influenced by an external force, while thinking she is being herself. I think this external force might be the stormspren, which acts both as the mechanism by which the form is attained, and a direct connection to Odium. Singer mental acuity seems, to a major extent, to be a biproduct of the symbiosis between the physical singer brains, their cognitive minds, and connection with a spren acting the enhance the connection, and also to alter their physical forms based on a cognitive idea. The form-of-power spren are like an Odium filter there, so all thoughts get a hint of odium. I suspect other non-dullform spren are either of honor, cultivation, or some combination, but there is less powerful investiture in them to act as a filter, and less will put forward by the shards to make the filter achieve a particular end, rather than to let the singers be themselves. I thought the net result, however, was very very similar to the effects Calamity's selfishness and misanthropy has on Epics, and that Brandon is working with the theme of not being yourself, but almost being possessed, in both places. I don't think in Stormight it's a fear-based system like what we got in Reckoners, but the connection is strong, and fear is one of the main motivators in getting the Listeners to take Stormform in the first place. Eshonai's truespren seems to be trying to insulate her from the influence of the stormspren, and that's what it eventually does for Venli when it decided to bond her instead, though I think the form she was given might have been less intensely odious than a stormspren, at least in terms of its ability to motivate evil in an otherwise good person. I don't know what to draw from all this, but I wanted to share the connection I think really is there and see what other people thought.

    I don't think the original Nahel Spren were Honor Spren, certainly. Highspren though, if the humans convinced themselves of some pretty wicked things that they considered to be just. I suspect some of the first Nahel spren might actually have been spren of Odium. I think Tanavast maybe actually reworked the whole system when the oathpact was formed, to give the Heralds surges capable of countering the dark surgebinders, who perhaps only had one surge each, and maybe again when the Radiants were found. I'm not sure surgebinders got two surges back before the radiants, or if the surges were the currently existing ones. Shards clearly can alter the system, like Leras did to add Atium to the list of metals that allomancers can burn when it's not one of the 16. I have no idea what happened, but I think humans had magic when they invaded Roshar, which was one of the reasons they were so terrifying.

    I think this is a possibility, but I don't think the listeners like Venli were changed. The nature of the listeners needing a cognitive being to get a form that can think at the level of humans also seems to be relevant.

    I think I disagree--I think radiants are stronger, if more controlled, than surgebinders were prior to what Ishar did. It's definitely clear that no truespren were bonding parshendi before humans, but I don't think we have the timeline nailed down for the relative order of the start of the oathpact and the beginning of surgebinding. I feel like the oathpact has to follow humans expanding from Shinovar as the original voidbringers, but I also think that that original expansion probably involved some wicked surgebinders leading the way. What the true-spren never did before the honorblades, I'm sure, is become shardblades. That came with Knights Radiant.

    I don't think we know when the Nahel bond started, but it wasn't honor's doing directly. I always assumed surgebinders were a natural result of humans coming to Roshar and spren being attracted to them, and I think the existence of surgebinders was one of the major reasons humans were such a threat originally. Radiants only came much much later, as Honor maybe reworked the entire surgebinding system. I'm almost certain that the issue was more what humans offered, and how true spren were attracted to that, than a choice on honor's part to side with humans. We're told humans fought on both sides in every desolation anyway. It's pretty clear Venli's spren is not bound to her gemheart. The one that gives her her form is, but not the one making her a willshaper. I don't think there's any reason to think true spren would be bound to a gemheart, but the only way for singers to function at the same intellectual level as humans involves taking a particular spren into their gemheart and sharing their cognitive aspect, and since it relies on the spren, I think it's pretty obviously less physically grounded than human intelligence, which is almost entirely a product of physical neurological processes. Not that singers don't also have extremely sophisticated brains, but it is clearly less the case than it is with humans.

    I just wanted to think for a second about why humans had the ability to bond higher spren but singers, who seem to be fully rational creatures like humans, at least in any form besides dullform and slave form. I think the reason for this has to do with evolution on Roshar and what higher spren get from the Nahel bond: sapience in the physical realm. Humans are physical beings--their cognition is a product of biological processes of the physical realm which obviously are manifested in the cognitive realm, and facilitated by innate investiture in the spiritual realm. The Parsh natives of Roshar evolved on a planet where the cognitive-based investiture was all over the place, and from evolutionary terms, the path of least resistance to developing sapience was a symbiotic process between humanoid and spren, rather than a fully physical process. The result is, obviously, that the sapience of singers is less physically grounded than that of humans, and thus a nahel bond is not nearly as firm a grounding in the physical realm as it is for humans, whose sapience is a result of their physical brains, at least on a material level. I think this is correct, but what has changed recently? Are spren bonding singers like Venli or (hopefully) Rlain even though the bond is less secure because they think it's just the right thing to do, and it CAN serve, just less well, or is there some other difference?

    We've seen Kaladin use adhesion (the surge of "pressure and the vacuum") multiple times in the series so far. Mostly this has been in the use of full lashing, but at other times this has also certainly been used, but besides full lashings, it has not been well explained, and certainly not compared to gravitation. It seems though that by controlling local atmospheric pressure precisely, Kaladin really can assert very fine control over the wind, and doing so, he could basically do most of the stuff airbenders can do in the Avatar universe. Do you think this is ultimately what Brandon has in mind? If so, what are the implications? I think it could make what has seemed to be one of the least useful surges, being used mostly just for full lashings, into one of the most useful, making the windrunner suite of abilities more appealing that that of the skybreakers (though we still really don't know much about division).

    We know a radiant with stormlight can heal a shardblade wound, and so could a bloodmaker with enough stored-up healing. Vin, with the Mists fueling her allomancy is MUCH more powerful than she is with metals, and the Mists are gaseous investiture like Stormlight, which allows those who can take it in to survive extreme trauma, heal unbelievably quickly and holding it seems to enhance their strength, speed, and dexterity in a manner at least somewhat similar to someone burning pewter (I don't think it's quite that potent though). Is what Vin does with the mists, assuming she doesn't ascend all the way to preservation, limited to allomantic powers she already potentially has, or could it/does it also do other things (like potentially healing her like stormlight heals surgebinders). She is pretty beat up before Marsh rips the earring out in Hero of Ages and then when she gets access to the mists, she seems to heal in a manner a lot greater than even pewter would normally supply, though she is also in the process of ascending to functional godhood. All of this is basically to ask if Vin, not taking enough of the mists into herself to become preservation, could heal a shardblade wound to her arm with the mists. What do you guys think?

    I think my perspective is spren, or something like them, like seons, bonded to humans pretty soon after humans first got to Roshar, without oaths involved. They never reached a point where they could mimic honorblades like Radiant spren could, but I think potentially intelligent spren could become sentient through bonding with humans, and that bond would give the humans surges, even though I suspect they never became more efficient than Kaladin was before swearing his second oath, though they probably did learn to use their powers at that lower level intentionally. I'm not sure if the surges were the same as the radiant surges later. Nohadon has surgebinders prior to the founding of the radiants, and Urithiru obviously exists during his lifetime if he walked there, but there are no Knights Radiant yet. I think the Oathpack is already well in place, with multiple desolations having happened by that point though.

    Szeth actually freaks out because Kaladin healed a shardblade wound, which the knights could do, but which the honorblades would not allow, except with the surge or progression applied oneself, which seems to be more potent even than regular stormlight healing, whether used by radiants or granted with an honorblade.

    So I'm currently on my reread of Stormlight and I don't think this is right. Spiritual restore points are an interesting theory, but I think things are more flexible than that. I think my original question about hacking the system to get incredibly strong probably is a no, but I think you could get stronger faster, just not way faster than you would expect. Because of the significance of your perception and your cognitive aspect, I think that you would still get jacked as much as you would expect from the working out, and you could recover faster. I think it's pretty clear Kaladin doesn't undo all his hard work from bridge-carrying and getting in great shape from practice when he sucks in stormlight and recovers quickly, but at the same time, he does get in progressively better shape. So I would say your own perception prevents serious hacking of the system, but stormlight certainly restores you not to the way you were at some point in the past, but to how you perceive you should be if everything is as it should be, including the positive things you did to make yourself stronger.

    The question I have is basically this: Say you awaken a mannequin, or a bit of cloth cut into the shape of a human, and someone cuts through it with a shardblade. What happens? Are the breaths destroyed? Is the "soul" of the awakened object created through the breaths severed? Does the blade go through the object without cutting physically, like a shardblade does with a human or animal, or does it cut the physical object in half? I couldn't find a WOB about this.

    Spoiler for Bands of Mourning and Secret History follow: Okay, I wanted to ask whether Kelsier intended people to understand him as the Lord Ruler when he went to Southern Scadrial, or whether that was never intended, and it was only a misinterpretation on the part of Wax and company of what Allik was saying? I suspect Kelsier used the Lord Ruler as something of a model, but is it the case that like, if people from Northern Scadrial ever found out what he was doing down there, he actually intended them to think the Lord Ruler had somehow returned and saved them? I just want clarification on it, but I can't think of good keywords to try to get that specific answer out of WoBs. When I tried I got wayyyy too many that weren't directly relevant.

    This question basically related to whether it would be easier for a surgebinder with access to stormlight or a bloodmaker with plenty of health stored up to get absolutely jacked or in totally insane mundane shape by lifting weights or going on runs at top speed while healing or burning stormlight. Like, could they heal the body as fast as they break it down and, assuming they have adequate nutrition, just get in insane shape, or does the stormlight heal their body is such a way that the fast recovery time can't be used to just like, get a month's worth of lifting in a day without strain?
