  1. From the first time we see inside a bendalloy bubble, when Wayne is pretending to be Wax's uncle and distracts the Harmses so he and Wax can have a moment, it's mentioned that most of what they say in the bubble would sound to those outside like a high-pitched blur. I will find the quote when I have a moment.
  2. This is pretty much the point I was trying to make. Option A is clearly not possible. Option B is clearly not possible. The answer must, therefore, be that neither A nor B is correct. But you phrase this as though the two models you've posited are the only two possible ones, despite the fact that you've proven both of them false. We can sit here and continue discussing two obviously flawed models as long as you want, but they will remain two incorrect answers. I suppose if you can find something within either of them that speaks to an underlying principle upon which we can base a third model, it would have some utility, but you mostly seem to be saying that one model + handwaving is probably true, because you don't think the other one is. There is no utility in that.
  3. I hadn't realized you were talking about handwaving away quite so much logic in your example. And you still think it's a viable model? So, in your model, let's say fifteen seconds pass. For simplicity, let's say it's a mere 3x time differential, so the bubble experiences a subjective 5 seconds. In those fifteen seconds, my transceiver, outside the bubble, will send fifteen pings. The bomb, inside the bubble, will get 3 pings per second. It will respond once per second, sending out five pings. But you're saying that as the signal goes from inside the bubble to outside, the interface of the bubble will simply decide to replicate the signal 10 times, to fill in all the extra seconds that the bomb itself isn't sending a ping. If that's the case, if a bubble simply decides to replicate things that should exist in faster time, then why not set up Marasi with a rotary gun? It fires x bullets per second, but at an 8x time differential, not enough bullets leave the bubble. Won't the bubble simply decide to replicate the bullets, following whatever impulse makes it replicate the signal? By that measure, couldn't Marasi make a rotary gun fire 8x longer than usual for the same stockpile of ammo? In short, your support for this theory is as follows: You posit two possible scenarios, state that if one of them is false the other has to be true because for some reason these are the only two possible scenarios, point out a few issues with one, and decide that this means the other absolutely has to be true, without inspecting it to see if it makes any more sense than the first scenario.
  4. If a pregnant woman swallowed and burned a bead of lerasium, what impact would that have on the unborn child?
  5. Moogle: None of what you said matters to what I'm talking about, if you'll read what i'm actually saying. Even assuming that the radio signal transfers perfectly from inside the bubble to outside, the point is that the device will only send out a signal once per second. This means many, many seconds will go by outside without the transceiver getting a signal, because time is compressed for the bomb, and so it will send the kill command. Or, at least, stop sending the "don't blow up yet" command. For the person inside the cadmium bubble, it will still be as long as you can stretch three seconds of time, but even assuming that Wax's suggestion of 8x is on the low end, and let's go ahead and give them 30x, that's now a minute and a half until the bomb goes off. So yes, if the bomb will go off in the next 90 seconds anyway, you might be protecting those outside the bubble for that span of time. It still only gives you, inside the bubble, three seconds to disarm the bomb or die.
  6. Confirmed: I will almost definitely NOT be going to this signing. Enjoy, whoever does attend!
  7. Not letting me quote, but this references the post above me. ...Yes, sorry, I was tired when I wrote that, and got it backwards. Then the receiver works both ways. The deadman's switch sends out a ping every second, and the bomb is programmed to respond. If the switch doesn't get a response for two seconds, it sends the kill command. My point is, it's not difficult to program a bomb with a way to tell when it is faster or slower than normal time, and then tell it to blow up if that circumstance happens.
  8. It's not a matter of frequency shift. The unit sends out a ping every second. The bomb is told, if you don't get a ping at least every other second, blow up. Even if there's absolutely no problem with the signal crossing the barrier, with cadmium the bomb will think many seconds have passed between pings.
  9. More utterly random ramblings that I'm just gonna toss out there. Maybe bindpoints aren't specific to a power, maybe they're specific to everything the metal itself isn't specific to. So, what I mean is, a Steel spike takes a Physical Allomantic Power. Bronze spikes take a Mental Allomantic Power. We know that a bronze spike in Vin's earlobe granted her the Internal, Pushing mental power. Because the spike was bronze, it was going to be a mental power, anyway. Maybe that's the spot for Internal, Pushing? So, if a steel spike had been used to kill a Mistburn, and it were put in the same spot on the earlobe, it would grant Pewter, the Internal Pushing Physical Power? Would an aluminum spike grant the power Duralumin in that spot? Is it possible that this is how the body is mapped? By which I mean, there are certain lines on your body which are either Pushing or Pulling, and other lines which are Internal or External, mapped in such a way so that no opposing lines ever touch (that is, there's no spot on your body where a Push line touches a Pull line). You have to find a place where a Push/Pull line intersects an Internal/External line, and that's a bindpoint with those properties. It still boils down (so far) to a bunch of random spots on your body, but this way there will be something more behind it. And, if it's true, it will mean that once we learn the exact spot for any specific Power, we'll know the spot of the power in the other four quadrants, as well. Hrm... one problem which occurs to me. Atium steals any power. If you steal from a mistborn, then, and place it on the body, how would it know which power to grant? I shall ponder this...

    Ironsight

"Ranette was a Lurcher, and could recognize most metals just by burning iron." I officially claim this as evidence that at a high enough level of skill, ironlines can tell you want kind of metal you're looking at. I think it would be an incredibly odd way to say, "She could tell whether or not something was metal by burning iron," which is the only other thing I believe it could mean. I remain, as ever, open to other reasonable explanations. Further slight evidence: relation to bronze. At a default, bronze can only tell you, "this person is burning brass." Marsh mentions many other things it can tell you if you get it at a high enough level, and by cheating with duralumin Vin is able to accomplish this feat once, determining which specific emotions Breeze was Soothing. This is evidence of an underlying principle of the sensory nature of Allomancy. I suspect being a metallurgist would help tremendously. I would expect the information not to come to you as labeled packets of information (like the knowledge that this metal is Steel with 8% carbon appears in your mind), but if you really know metals and study them enough, you might realize, "hey, I see a particular trait in the ironlines to all these metals, but a different one to all of these, and group A is magnetically reactive, while group B is not... perhaps this variance indicates a magnetically reactive metal." Or some such, and by learning the hard way what traits various metals have, you can eventually look at a metal and think, "Hrm, the ironlines are telling me it's an alloy, not a pure element, that it's magnetically non-reactive, low ductility but high malleability... aha, I totally know this metal!"
  11. The only Canon WoB on he topic I've ever found are in annotations, where he mentions that the God Beyond is "something bigger than Kelsier or Harmony." That screams Adonalsium to me personally, but I will grant it could also be the fan theory.
  12. Specifically, "The Unforgeable Metal"
  13. As Squirrel says, most of what people are basing this on is from the MAG, notibly non-canon. WoB is that every arcana can be fueled on each planet "with some jury-rigging". I feel like if it were as simple as feruchemical nicrosil converting any form of Investiture into any other form at will, that wouldn't be something described as "jury-rigging." Is it possible? Maybe. Will it turn out to be the default setting? I personally would be incredibly surprised if it were that easy.
  14. Thank you; I had intended to put the date in the OP and I apparently forgot. Edited.
  15. D'oh! I had not realized Comic Con day passes were already sold out. I cannot attend, unless someone can suggest an option that isn't spending $150 for a day pass on Stub Hub.
  16. I don't know yet if I'll be able to attend, but I will try. I've got a new phone, and an external battery, so if I do go I should do a better job of signing-line audio. In case anyone wants the deets: Javits Center 655 W 34th Street New York, NY 10001 One Day Only, Saturday, 10/11 Signing event 2pm to 3pm Speaking event on Villains 4pm-4:45pm Signing for Villains event 5:15 pm-6:15 pm
  17. Also, the signal device could be used for many different bombs. A television receives a signal from a source; that source sends signals to thousands of TVs. Are we suggesting that if I put up a cadmium bubble around my television, every television hooked up to the same provider would suddenly be in slo-mo?
  18. @Pechvarry: My apologies for our colleague's rudeness. Your idea is not absurb, nor is it proven wrong just because one person has decided to disagree with it. It's an interesting conjecture, and your point that the Dor is holding Reod Elantrians in stasis is a fair point to explain why it would be different than other, simply-Invested people. I'm not sure I personally believe it, and I would like to see some more evidence on both sides, but for now it's a reasonable hypothesis.
  19. This is widely assumed, and I happen to agree, but to the best of my knowledge it has not been proven.
  20. Interesting question... the answer might tell us some interesting things. I would suspect you can, much like aluminum cannot be affected by allomancy, but is still an allomantic metal.
  21. Remember, though, that apart from that one vague reference, we know literally nothing about the "metal fabrials" people keep discussing. You can assume it provides infinite allomantic energy at zero cost, but I personally will be surprised if that turns out to be the actual case.
  22. Agree; WoB's are very odd, and conflicting. I've never really stopped to wonder at this, but you're right, it's very odd. Vasher can sense rusting GRASS with his lifesense; surely a sentient human, however Drab, still has more Investiture than grass. I wonder, perhaps what's really happening is different than we've always believed? I think you're right, that Breath is a part of Innate Investiture, but not all of it, and that Mr. Sanderson was being inexact in the quote above, the one where he said they have none. It happens to the best of us, as evidenced by the fact that it seems to have happened to Mr. Sanderson, whom I personally consider to be "the best of us." But then... Lifesense cannot be sensing just the bit that is Breath, unless we try to make the case that on Nalthis, even grass is Endowed with Breath. Technically possible, but I would be surprised. Perhaps something else is happening? Maybe the act of giving away the portion of your spiritweb we call Breath has an ancillary effect on the rest of it. Maybe it closes it off somehow, recursions it, in a stealthy way that prevents lifesense from detecting what's left.
  23. You're absolutely right, exactly like how the potent hydrochloric acid produced by the human stomach in order to digest food eats its way through a human's entire body, proving that humans don't have internal organs, either.
  24. Okay, well, you seem to be in the "realmatics trumps everything" camp. I'm personally not. Show me a WoB saying that literally nothing but how an object thinks of itself ever matters, and I will believe you. Then you can go ahead and explain why insane people cannot actually fly, and why I can't be an Allomancer just because I really feel like one. Until such time, I'm just gonna be here with my own opinions. What drives me sorta insane is the way that people who believe that cognitive aspect is the pure and simple trump card and that literally nothing else in the physical or spiritual realms matter can't seem to get their minds around the idea that others don't agree with them. My post was, "Cognitive aspect isn't everything." Your reply begins, "Well, since we both agree that cognitive aspect is everything..."
  25. I'm gonna go with "physics trumps this one". However much they might think of themselves, or others might think of them, as one object, they are non-contiguous. I realize there's a lot of people who think that "realmatics" means that if you believe something strong enough it'll happen, but no Lurcher is ever gonna be able to burn Tin just because he goes insane and believes he's able to. Realmatics is important, cognitive aspects are important, and they affect certain things greatly, but there are a few fundamental and immutable laws of the universe that will remain what they are regardless of what anyone believes.
