  1. My brother is the bartender at a.bar in Rittenhouse Square, which is about a fifteen minute drive, so that's where I'll probably be going afterwards unless there are people that would rather do something right by the bookstore.

This signing starts relatively early, and his YA crowds tend to be smaller... I'm holding out hope that if we hang out long enough, the event will end and he'll consent to get a coffee with us somewhere and hang out. Prolly gonna see about a diner in walking distance, but if he's down with a 15-minute drive to a bar that's cool.

  2. (I seriously don't think Anderson's knows what they're in for having Brandon come through. WoT maxed them out and we only had, maybe 30 people)

As a general rule, his YA stuff doesn't draw the crowds of his major works. That said, a small crowd for a Sanderson event is still usually much bigger than 30 people.

I haven't been to his Philly location before, but I've heard from people who have and I've seen the size of the entire building on maps.google and the line will definitely be extending out the door.

  3. I'm a little confused by the OP... that I know of, we only ever see one full Aonic Equation work, and for all we know he really did add in all the Chasm Lines to every individual Aon when he made his illusions.

Besides that, all we see are single aons, like Ashe or Daa, or simple modified Aons. In case this is the confusion: Not every modifier is an entire Aon. You can draw a simple Aon like Ien, and add a few marks around it that simply define the power; they aren't Aons, just modifiers. It seems like you're talking about a full Aonic Equation, where a bunch of different Aons are connected to craft a far more complicated spell.

  4. Minor thread-necro; apologies. Does anyone know if Amazon UK has the new version of Elantris up for grabs on Kindle, and do I have to buy it again, or does it auto-update?

I have a Nook, but was attempting to update for my friend's Kindle, and did some research. Apparently you have to go to amazon.com and find a way to contact the people in charge of kindles; tell them you have the book but it's been updated and they should be able to change it in your account. I have not tried this myself, but I've been told it works.

  5. Language is the only science I'm at all good at, so this is my only contribution. My buddy is a nuclear chemist and a Sanderfan (though he doesn't come on the Shard very often) so I'm gonna show him all of this and see if he has any thoughts. It sure is interesting, though. Oh my. Very science. Such bomb.

When Vasher gives Commands to be triggered later, he says, "Upon call," as in, "Upon call, become as my fingers and grip that which I must." So the specific phrasing might be something more like, "Upon call, detonate."

What's nice about that, Vasher doesn't say anything aloud about what "call" is, but it's later triggered by a specific thumb-twitch. With practice, then, you can apparently just say, "upon call" and mentally envision the trigger to be just about anything. Put a clock next to it with the alarm set for five hours, and imagine that "upon call" is the sound of the clock chiming. Or "after a thousand people have tread on you" and then bury it on the path of an approaching army (or under a civilian street, you MONSTER). Maybe "call" can be when it reaches a certain temperature, or a speed, literally any imaginable condition.

We've not yet seen, but it's possible, that you can give Commands a time. "At five o'clock, detonate." "In five hours, detonate." Although, minor spoilers for another book, we've seen an instance of something Invested and associated with a person being timed in heartbeats, even if that means the heart beats faster than at other times. With this being your Breath, your Command, and blood (associated with hearts), I wonder if a valid Command might be, "Upon the millionth beat of my heart, detonate." Not only does that have at least some sort of basis in terms of things we've seen in the Cosmere, it now allows for a super-dramatic, "the only way to stop the bomb is to kill the bomb-maker. Also try not to get his heart-rate too high." Very, how dark is the hero willing to go to save lives.

  6. I'll have my phone and an external battery to record the signing line. He's always fine with it. If memory serves, last time it was scheduled there I called the store to ask, and I was told that they didn't mind as long as it was fine with the author. If anyone has equipment better than my phone's mic, that would be awesome.

  7. To be clear, skaa's quote was specifically talking about metalminds that were also available as an allomantic reserve. If the question is, could you touch a tinmind that a Windwhisper who is not an allomancer is wearing as a ring and leech that, we do not currently have an answer. I would expect no, since if that were the case Leechers would be able to touch the metal supports of a building, destroy them, and topple the building, and no one seems to indicate in the books that this is possible.

  8. UPDATE:

    Here is the Transcription. (incomplete)

Please help by listening to the two parts of the signing-line audio. Split because there was a bit in the middle where he talked personally, briefly, about someone he knows and he asked me to excise it. I found the spot, and hopefully it was only the one he mentioned to me, but if anyone is listening to help me transcribe, if you notice him discuss personal matters please let me know so I can take down the audio and splice it again. I will be checking myself, but I wanted to get it up so that people have time to transcribe it before the event tomorrow, hopefully reduce the chance of doubled questions. He did expressly say there was just the one part, and the part I removed matched the description he gave me, so fingers crossed I'm in the clear.

    Who is going?

Anyone from the Washington, DC area want to carpool?

The place is Children's World. It looks like a pretty simple commute from Philly, but from most other places it will be far easier, faster and cheaper to drive.

EDIT:Per store website, the signing is at 4pm.

    17 Haverford Station Rd,
    Haverford, PA 19041
    (610) 642-6274

This is the same place he had it last year that ended up getting not-snowed out. They asked at the time that people purchase a book in order to attend the signing. You can call them, and order it if you give them a credit card.

  9. I've always seen it as the specific phenomenon, like an infection. People don't turn into shades just because they died, it's only if you're killed by a shade. While it's possible there's some universal component that acts together, there is something unique in people killed by shades, not just people killed, period.

Silence worries for a moment that she might have awakened... I think it's called a Deeper One, or a Deepest One. I sorta see it as patient zero. Once, long ago, there were no shades, just a few Deepest Ones. The first people killed by a Deepest One turned into a shade, and now anyone killed by a shade or a Deepest One turns into a shade. It's basically like zombies. In theory, if someone led a concerted effort and simply killed off every shade, and if they were able to somehow kill or trap the Deepest Ones, the Forests would become just another wood. It's just that there are so many at this point that it's realistically implausible.

  10. Did not see anything in that quote that said Shardplate can survive the vacuum of space... nothing mentioned/confirmed by Mr. Sanderson, at least...

My concern is, Shardplate has a slit for the eyes. I guess if you cover that slit with like, plexiglass or something?

    WoR Spoilers

Or maybe living Shardplate can mold the way living Shardblades can?
