  1. Ooo, thanks, I didn't get to ask it (it was like #89 on my list and I asked I think six questions, most of them because I stayed til the end of the signing and he just hung out with us) but I did have a question which was basically that... I wanted to know, when Lightsong has the flashback to his first death, were we seeing the Cognitive Realm?

  2. Hey everyone! Great to meet other Sharders, as ever. I do have the audio transcript; unfortunately, apparently he spoke at some point with someone about someone personally, and he's asked me to go through and clip out that audio before I post it. I believe he said it was pretty close to the end, so hopefully I'll be able to get that up before too very long, and can beg for transcription help.

Him asking me not to post that audio prompted me to stop the recording, so there are a couple of questions asked I didn't get. I remember mine; it's a paraphrase, but his answer was reasonably direct.

I asked, if Shai bonded a Shardblade, could one of her Essence Marks (like Shai-Zan) summon it? He said, she'd have to make an essence mark where her history "split off" more recently than she got the Blade. I asked as a follow-up, what if it was Shai-Zan who bonded it, and he said then only Shai-Zan could summon the Blade, Shai couldn't. I did not at the time think to ask, could she Forge a plausible history where Shai-Zan ALSO bonded the same Blade.

The signing was SUPER AWESOME. Seeing all the fans. Seeing the costumes. Meeting The Man. He had a seriously sore throat but powered through. If you're going to a future signing, the "reading" is different than the one from last tour, and personally I find it REALLY fascinating. I expect I will not be alone in this.

One of my favorite moments: I was dressed as a Mistborn. I saw a guy standing in line in a similar costume. So I grabbed a few clips from my mistsash and threw them at him. He turned around and laughed when he realized what I was doing, and threw some dollar coins (boxings?) at me. We did this for a while before my buddy tricked the other guy into borrowing his sword, not realizing it was Nightblood.

Beyond that, it was hanging out with people, walking to Wawa, discussing deeply realmatic things.

@Art: If you're who I think you are, my buddy was talking the entire drive home about how much he loves his Nightblood drawing. He's certain he's got the only copy of Alcatraz in the world with Nightblood drawn in it by Alcatraz's illustrator in the presence of Brandon himself.

  3. Alright I got back from the signing. I asked a bunch of questions (mostly about Connection) and my sister recorded them; here's a transcript. I didn't write down my questions / don't have a lot of practice with good question writing so I got quite a few RAFOs, but there's some interesting things still.

Dude these were AWESOME questions, and fascinating answers.

EDIT: Also, as someone going to a signing today, thank you for getting the questions/answers up so quickly so I can cull my own list of repeats...

  4.

But Vasher is still too young.
Vasher returned Centuries after Vo, Vo returned after the Hierocracy End and the Hierocracy is in recent history while the Recreance is in ancient history.

I'm not questioning your reasoning... but odder things have happened. I'd like it better if we had a certain answer. My post was in reply to you responding to that specific question, saying, "the matter is closed." There's compelling evidence, and I'd be surprised if Vasher ever saw a living Sprenblade... but things have surprised me before.

  5. I never know what to ask for as my personalization. Any suggestions? I'm fine with just him signing my books but in the past he's just written random things, like once he wrote RAFO when I hadn't even asked a question. So I'd like to ask for a personalization. I guess I should think of a couple of softball questions he's sure to answer, or just a quote or something?

The books will be Bands of Mourning, Firefight, and Calamity.

  6. Kay. I don't personally interpret the information that same way, I was just wondering if you had something additional. We know that the whole planet has one system of magic that expresses itself differently depending on where you are, but they all channel the Dor. I would expect that the Moon Scepter lets you tap into the Dor for your type of magic, anywhere, but I would be surprised if it lets you tap into the Dor on a planet where the Dor simply wasn't there.

  7. No, he dodged the question. He said Vasher could have just heard a story. Either learning about them or seeing one would have worked. That I know of, though, this is the first we learn that he modeled Nightblood on a life Sprenblade, not a dead one.

  8. So... this was downvoted for some reason.

Definitely was not me, I upvoted to cancel it. I personally suspect the story in the newpaper was a simple work of fiction, and therefore implies nothing, but it could be based on truth, I suppose. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some way for a Leecher to drain reserves from metalminds, but I expect it's similar to how bronze can Seek feruchemy. It should be that easy but clearly isn't, so there's something we're missing.

My question got RAFOd, but I asked for the name of a character that we haven't met yet, and got the name Grafter written in my book. I would upload a picture but I'm not sure how to.

Huh. Sounds like either Roshar or Rithmatist, to me. Interesting question!

    Q. Why does Lift have to eat food instead of sucking stormlight?

    A. Lift is a really good/weird one. She visited the Old Magic, and asked something very strange, and the Old Magic didn't know how to treat that, and answered with something equally strange. You are going to eventually see what is happening with Lift, but suffice to say some really weird things are going on with Lift.

This supports, I think, my current theory that her request was, "I want to be awesome."

  9. @Landis: I found that one WoB about Inquisikids for you. Also, upvote for the phrase, "love-hate relationship with genetics."

Here's my list that I'm narrowing down for the Seattle Q&A tonight:

If a person dies and becomes a cognitive shadow and then their body is made into a Lifeless, do they act as two different people? Does the cognitive shadow have some control over the Lifeless old body? I expect it matters HOW you turn into a Cognitive Shadow. We've seen a few different ways in text, and several of them would have implications for this hypothetical scenario.

Since the ability to burn metals or store them is contained in the spiritweb, since it can be ripped from one spiritweb and given to another, could a Forger change a person's spiritweb sufficiently to grant them allomantic abilities? I'll try to find it.... there's a recent WoB which suggests that Forging someone to have any kind of an "ability" would be pretty tricky, and would require more power than most Essence Marks could access alone.

Being an inquisitor does not make one impotent. So if two inquisitors had a child, would the child have a higher likelihood of having allomancy or feruchemy? Ta-dah. One of my favorite quotes, it's so creepy how he says.... complications.

Can a Hemalurgical spike be utilized as both a spike for the granting of a given ability and a location to store an attribute feruchemically? Yes. In Hero of Ages, Marsh uses one of his steel spikes granting physical allomancy, to store speed feruchemically. He mentions it in the scene where he spikes Penrod. One of the advantages of Scadrian Investiture being relatively low-power; they mix better without interfering.

Having a Hemalurgical Spike take a power from you damages your spiritweb in a tremendous way (being alive after would be worse than being a drab).  Is it damaging to the SpiritWeb to have a spike put in you and then removed?  Does the damage persist? Not sure what you mean by this, but to an extent, we know having a spike in you does do some damage, and removing it mitigates at least some. See, Vin's earring lets Ruin talk to her and keeps the mists away, but removing the earring shuts him up and lets the mists in. It's possible some damage still persists, but it might depend on your perspective. My friend just got eye surgery. Some shot lasers into her eye, cutting things up a bunch. Cutting off bits of someone's body would typically be classified as "damage". The damage persists, because she can still see fine. It sorta depends on your particular definition of the word "damage".

Are there ways to sufficiently rewrite one's spiritweb to attune to different magic systems (feruchemy, allomancy, biChromia, etc)? There's a recent WoB which suggests that this is one use of feruchemical Connection.

If an Elantrian were on Scadrial, would they have to use a different base rune for their magics?  Would the small modifications that specify the exact instruction remain the same? Um, Landis, where do you get the answer to this one? That I know of, he's never confirmed the popular fan-theory that one can use AonDor anywhere, if you just draw a picture of the new place.

It is implied that a Returned can live off investiture like that found in stormlight.  Does this investiture get translated into a corresponding number of breaths?  Is there a unit of measurement that can be utilized to determine this amount?  Can those Breaths be gifted? He's frequently mentioned that he's trying to avoid giving us a hard translation of "this is how much stormlight one Breath is", but maybe he's reached the point where he's willing to tell us. I would be surprised if the Stormlight actually turns into Breath, I expect that whatever keeps Vasher alive simply eats Stormlight because it's close enough. With a few wires, I can make a toy that needs AA batteries run off a D battery; that doesn't mean the D battery IS a AA battery now.

What rate would an allomancer have to be burning a metal at producing pure investiture energy to counteract Nightblood's breath-drain? Please tell me if he answers this.

Lemme know if there are any questions you don't get to ask, I'm making a big list I'm gonna print out on cards to hand out in Philly on Saturday and I need more questions.

  10. Double posting. I'M A MAVERICK!

I'm coming up with a list of questions for the Philly stop Saturday. Anyone's help posting the questions asked at signings this week would be much appreciated. Or if you can post the questions you're planning to ask so I know not to double-ask.

  11. 1. I am bringing a gift.

    2. I have brought gifts in the past.

    3. People frequently give gifts. The most common are Magic: The Gathering cards and ... I think cookies? Some delicious snacky-thing, I forget what specifically he requests.

Avoid giving anything that would be creepy under any circumstance and I think you're good.

  12. Found this question of ChrisWhite

Q: Could a sentient invested object take up a shard?

A: Highly unlikely, probably impossible--but impossibility is hard to judge

    link

While I am on board the 'Let Nightblood take up Odium and put context to "the weight of God’s own divine hatred, separated from the virtues that gave it context" ' ship it does take a hit here. While I thought that it's the end game of SA if it was the answer we were getting would be  more coy or RAFOing answer.

This is fascinating, since I asked an almost-identical question in his recent AMA, and was specifically told he was not going to answer such questions. Awesome! Thank you.
