I’m going to disagree with that. When I say disorder, I mean something that is negatively impacting your life to an abnormal degree. Most people do have bouts of depression, but most of the population does not suffer from it on the level that Kaladin does. Look at Shallan, constantly breaking down, and tell me again that a blind person with nothing mental to deal with can’t compete. (And agreed with what others have said about it not being a matter of duties) Because we’re all having a discussion here? I haven’t noticed any rules saying “only react to what is said directly to you” lol. Nobody is doing that. You can remove it in the options I can’t reiterate what others have been saying enough - we know from Brandon that spren are choosing based on who a person is, not what that person is.

I am disappointed in Brandon's silence
AonEne replied to NattyBo's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I’m going to be blunt here and cut to the chase. I’m not accusing or insulting anyone, and my tone is generally respectful, and this is on topic, so I don’t think anyone will have problems with it, but if I somehow misstep please tell me how and I’ll fix it. Speaking is hard. All the other reasons why Brandon might not be saying anything are valid too, but if I was in his position and wasn’t talking about it, this would be why: giving your thoughts on a subject, especially one so huge and important and divisive as this, thoughts that tons of people are begging for and will use to base their opinions off of - are already basing their opinions off of - it’s difficult to do, plain and simple. Or at the very least it can be for some of us. You take in everything that’s happening and have to stay steady even though some of it is crazy and some is shocking and some is heartbreaking. To some people that’s all galvanizing, and to others it’s incapacitating. To some people it becomes a focal point of their life, and others just can’t deal with it all. People react differently, and some react with a desire to just leave it all alone, to back off and let others do the brunt of the work. It means they’re not the heroes, the ones actively helping the state of the world, putting themselves out there and making a difference - but to me, that’s okay. Because other people are, and sometimes you just need a break, sometimes you don’t have the perfect thing to say, sometimes talking is confusing and impossible and could go wrong a thousand ways and you don’t want to mess it up, so you let other people take the spotlight and do “the right thing”. And I put quotes there, but it is the right thing. The people who speak up are helping. But it’s not the wrong thing not to. We’re all human and we all have breaking points, things we can’t and don’t want to handle. And shouldn’t have to. Yes, Brandon’s commented on other things. There have been times when there have been things that I should technically do, but I just can’t face them for one reason or another, so I put it off (sometimes indefinitely) and do other things instead. I’m still around, still clearly existing and aware of what’s going on, but the thought of jumping in exhausts me. So I prioritize my mental health. (Yes, this subject is much bigger than many of the subjects I normally talk about. I am not attempting to make racism or the BLM movement into something small, merely making comparisons with the only materials I can pull from: my own life experiences. I believe this particular aspect of mental health is something that carries over despite the size of the topic being addressed, and do not intend to sound ignorant of that size.) -
They probably copy-pasted it from Google Docs or something. (If you want to keep talking, let’s go elsewhere.)

I’m cheating and doing both of you: The Legend of Eli Monpress has everything you’re looking for here. Lunar Chronicles! I’m blanking on if you’ve read those or not already, please glare at me if you have, and a secondary recommendation of anything by Scott Westerfeld. Someone give me a good romance with lots of fluff, no angst. I need something pure and wholesome.

Welcome! As said, you can join discussions anytime you want, there’s no “you must do yadda yadda so on” to start talking. As for getting to know people, the Community board will help you out - a General Discussion thread or a forum game are some good places to try!

I took it. Just as a side note, the term Multiple Personality Disorder hasn’t been in use for decades - it’s Dissociative Identity Disorder now, and Shallan doesn’t quite meet the requirements for that disorder. It’s probable that she has some other type of dissociative disorder with the combination of her trauma and her Lightweaver status. No idea if you planned to talk about her or not, but I thought you should know.

Ah okay, makes sense.

This character is from Roshar (and just joined the forums)
AonEne replied to Hundredlives's topic in Introduce Yourself!
Hi, welcome to the Shard! I can’t wait to read that study if it’s publicly available. Would it be too much trouble to ask to be pinged when you post the survey? Out of all the books in the cosmere, which is your favorite? -
(Psst, we don’t usually necro threads from four years ago. )

When Tion said that Sagitta should already be aware of it, Last turned and looked at Sagitta with a frown, but she clearly was not, so it dismissed the statement. “It’s true that I am not of you, nor your Power,” it said when asked. “I am not your replacement - do you plan on having one? It might be possible...” It thought about this for a moment, considering and discarding ideas wordlessly. As Tion yelled and Sagitta ran to him, there was a rustling of energies in the clearing, but whatever Tion had tried to bind Last with could find nothing to bind. Last listened to the changing magic for several seconds, observing; it didn’t know all the secrets of this world, and it was interesting but not very informative. It looked up at Sagitta with a sigh and said to Tion, “Please tell her that it is me, and that I am no person. Merely a Concept.” If it had had distinctly visible eyes, its tone implied they would be narrowed as it went on. “And as far as I am aware, you have no way to bind me, as you have no Power over my Design. My consent is required to restrain me, and I have not given you that.” @Archer @Sorana

Certainly not entirely. To some extent I believe they are, to some extent not. You get traits from both nature and nurture. But honestly I’m having trouble seeing how an alternate universe where Jasnah is blind is relevant to this discussion; it’s been established that she’s a capable person, I don’t understand why you think she’d suddenly stop being herself because she went blind. If anything, I feel like the ripple effects would be to make her even more of a fighter, even more determined to prove her worth with scholarship; she’d have another hurdle to get past, and so far Jasnah shines at that.

Depends on your definition of foul language. For most people, it wouldn’t. For me it wouldn’t. Others think it hinges on the group you’re in and what their views are. Different philosophies *shrugs* Nor do I, I’m just saying curses are commonly used. I would agree with that, but others wouldn’t. Some wouldn't consider the words we think are vulgarities to be vulgarities. I wasn’t talking about businesses; I was talking about cultures in different nations, etc. Only the ones Brandon doesn’t use, for the purpose of making the site family-friendly. All the ones he does use are allowed, save for d- becoming d-ation, because they thought it’d be a fun Roshar thing I assume.

Shai specifically changed major parts of her past. If this one singular thing had been changed, it might change some parts of Jasnah from ripple effect, but I don’t see any reason why it would have a huge impact on her core character traits. She’s the type of person not to let something like blindness stop her. Maybe you would be, and you could judge yourself best, but not everyone would become an entirely different person. Every Radiant being blind and without psychological disorders, easy. Both can be gotten around, but in my experience, from what I’ve seen, it is (usually) far more difficult to get over psychological issues. Kaladin isn’t depressed, Teft isn’t addicted and doesn’t hate himself, Dalinar never spirals into flashbacks and alcoholism? That solves SO MANY THINGS. No more champion for Odium! Someone write this fanfic You said it yourself, most people don’t train those senses. Therefore they’re not helpful with them.

Welcome to the Shard! All of them, all of them still need therapy imo. You’ve come to the right place to make friends, the people here are pretty awesome!

I’m not going to go list them all off for you, but if you reread the books while keeping an eye out for curses, there are a good few. Check the OP again. Most are variants on the same word, and most, as said, are religious. Have you been in a high school lately? Also, ‘God’ is an extremely common curse which is also used heavily as a topic of normal conversation. Trust me. There are many people out there who see nothing wrong with curses. And in different cultures, curses are different, as are their level of vulgarity to different people. Not anywhere close to a minority.

They say that, but I don’t experience it Oh hey, I think I played Munchkin once with Po and some friends!

I am disappointed in Brandon's silence
AonEne replied to NattyBo's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I mean, I don’t think it’s that uncommon for people who run social media accounts of celebs to use ‘I’, especially if it’s not a personal thing and is instead just a ‘hey Dark One stuff’. -
Not the yellows, the oranges. I usually win with them, they’re cheap but pay out well.
-
I feel this on a spiritual level. But no, guys, it’s the orange properties. They’ll give you wins even more.

The 17th Shard’s Tenth Anniversary: Your Favorite Memories

*laughs evilly* Thank you, Wyn! That means a lot to me. My favorite memories are usually when I’m just talking with people. I love writing, I live for it, but the causal conversations that can go anywhere - those are the best.- 32 replies
