I see it. I've always found clowns to be creepy. That isn't helping.

While going through Warbreaker again something occurred to me. At the end of AoL when Miles is about to die he says: 'You are fools! One day, the men of gold and red, bearers of the final metal, will come to you. And you will be ruled by them.' I kept wondering what he meant by that. I've heard a theory that it's referring to people from the other side of Scadrial, but not much else. Then I started listening to Warbreaker again and it mentioned how each of the Halandren gods (except for the godking) has two colors, usually a color and a metallic, to represent them. Before that point I wasn't paying attention to the metallic part, just to the color part. I hadn't even realized that Lightsong was represented by Red and Gold. I'm not saying there IS a connection here, just that there could be, and if there is a connection, I don't think there's enough evidence for me to feel confident trying to guess exactly what it is. Just thought it was interesting and worth sharing.

the most useless uses for useful powers
Chromium Compounder replied to king of nowhere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I love it, but I don't think you could actually remove the ability to forge, just the knowledge of how, which Shai made an essence mark for. -

I know it's useful, but compared to the vast potential of forgery, it's pretty lame. That's how most of the interesting ideas people have posted have been. -

I don't mind my beard, but my wife doesn't like to kiss me when I have one, so I have to shave. Although I suppose I could try forging her to like kissing my bearded self. -

Anybody remember those old red lobster commercials with the cowboy sitting at a campfire shaving with with a bowie knife? Make him look like a wimp by shaving with a shardblade. Although I'd rather soulcast my beard into air. -
Effect of the state of a world's shards
Chromium Compounder replied to Chromium Compounder's topic in Cosmere Discussion
No problem. I hadn't seen that before, and like I said, I actually like the that magic changes with the state of the world's shards. I hope I'm right that given enough time the magic systems on Scadrial will change as well. I picture the three metallic arts gradually merging into a single new art. -
I've seen lots of posts which assume that the splintering of shards changes the way magic works on that world. I like this idea, but I don't see any evidence which can confirm or deny it. The evidence which I've seen the most to try to support it is the assertion that the Dor is the combined power of the splintered shards Devotion and Dominion. If that's true, then I would agree with it, but I've never seen anything which says that for certain. I think of the Dor as being Jesker's term for the power of creation which all magic systems and all shards in the Cosmere use. Having a single term for the source of power doesn't mean all the magic systems on Sel were changed by the splintering of the shards. We don't have enough information about the magic systems on Roshar for me to be comfortable drawing on its magic systems to know if they were affected by the splintering of its shards. We do know quite a bit about the magic systems of Scadrial, and we've seen the state of its shards change, though not in the same way. Still, if the splintering of shards changes the magic systems, then I would expect the merging of shards to likewise affect the magic systems. Perhaps magic was changed on Scadrial. Atium, Lerasium, and their alloys are nowhere to be found, and there are two metals we've never seen before. I don't think this is a change, as Atium and Lerasium and their alloys shouldn't have been listed with the other metals to begin with. Scadrial has also changed in that there are no more mistborn and no more full feruchemists. Wax says no man can have more than one allomantic power and one feruchemical power. You could argue that that change is due to the weakening of the bloodlines though. So, there are no definite changes in the magic of Scadrial. That doesn't necessarily mean that there shouldn't be from the state of the shards. It's possible that not enough time has passed yet for it to happen. After all, it's only been a few generations since the origin. It's also possible that Harmony is actively preventing the change, though why he would do that, I don't know. So, as I see it, there's no real proof either way. Has anyone seen anything they would see as proof that splintering (or other changes in the states of shards) does or does not have an effect on the magic of that world?

I think you are thinking of when Szeth says Shardplate interferes with Surgebinding. He says it's difficult to lash someone wearing plate, and if he were to wear plate it would interfere with his surgebinding. He says he has to choose between plate and surge binding (which is odd since the radiants had both). Forging an already awakened object to have a different command I could believe. I think the new command would have to be something that didn't require more Breath than what is already in the object, but I think it would be possible to do.

Hmm, that completely changes awakening... I guess Endowment must have made the people of Nalthis with the ability to give a piece of their souls to people and things. Ok. Well, I still don't think something could be awakened via forgery. I could be wrong though.

Fun idea, but I don't think it would work. The belief that Biochromatic Breath is a piece of the soul never made sense to me. It is part of their religion that it is, but I think it is simply investiture bestowed by Endowment on all those born on Nalthis. As for a Forger being able to forge something to believe it was awakened... Again, it's a fun idea, but I don't think forgery can fake investiture. If you could do that then why not forge yourself every morning so that at some point in your past you ate some Lerasium and became a mistborn, then you killed a shard bearer and took his shard blade. Fun to think about, but it doesn't seem like such a forgery would take, for anyone. From what I read, it seems like Forgery is a net neutral magic system like Feruchemy. You can't add or remove with it, just alter, rearrange.

Shardic Force and Shard Grouping Theory
Chromium Compounder replied to Chromium Compounder's topic in Cosmere Discussion
As I said before, I wasn't sure where to put Endowment. I could see valid arguments for both mental and spiritual. Personally I think it's more likely spiritual than mental, but I couldn't come up with something else to put in that spot for mental, so I left it in both, for now. -
Shardic Force and Shard Grouping Theory
Chromium Compounder replied to Chromium Compounder's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The main part of this arrangement I believe in is the four main groups (Physical, Mental (aka Cognitive), Spiritual, and Temporal). The internal/external groupings and the pushing/pulling groupings I could easily see as something else. I don't have anything else to go on though, so I stuck with how it is done for allomancy. EDIT: I disagree. I'm an amateur author (written 2 novels, but neither is worthy of publishing in their current forms. The one I'm working on now has potential if I could ever find more than a few minutes at a time to work on it.), and one thing I've found when writing fantasy or Sci fi is that the 'world' has to make sense to me according to the rules I create for it. I know that's not true for all authors, but I'm pretty sure it is for the best ones, and I certainly think it does for Brandon. Grouping the shards' intents would make it make more sense to me, and make it feel more believable. -
Shardic Force and Shard Grouping Theory
Chromium Compounder replied to Chromium Compounder's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I agree. I still think this theory has merit, and as more cosmere books come out and reveal more shards I'm going to see if they fit this model. -
After rereading HoA I began to get the feeling that each shard has an underlying force to it. When Sazed took Preservation and Ruin he could recognize them as powers for stability and change. Both of these are good things in their own right, but taken to the extreme each could be bad, and I think the Intent of a shard is what happens if the power is taken to the extreme. Given enough time, every shard can't help but go to the extreme (hence Ati going from a decent person to trying to destroy an entire world). For some shards they may seem the same, or they may be difficult to tell apart, but the theory still holds. So this of course brings up the question of what is the underlying force of the other shards. To help answer that, let's look at another question many have been looking into: What if shards can be grouped similar to the groupings of allomantic metals? Physical, Mental, Temporal, and Enhancement (I've always thought Enhancement felt like it should be Spiritual. Perhaps the reason it's enhancement for allomancy is because allomancy is physical, and spirit enhances physical. This makes it line up better with Realmatic theory. So anyway, I'm putting spiritual instead of enhancement.) Within each of those there is internal and external, and within each of those there is pushing and pulling. I'm not positive on all of them, but here's how I think it is for the known shards. I start with its placement in the grouping, and then I put what I believe to be its underlying force. The grouping makes the force make more sense to me. Some of these may not seem like a force, but in that realm it makes sense to me for them to be forces. I've got Endowment twice (mental external pushing and spiritual internal pushing). I don't think it's both, but I see valid arguments for it to be either one. I can't think of anything else to fit in either place, so I'm going to leave it in both for now. I'm putting in the unknown shards with ?s to hold their place in the grouping. Physical internal pulling - maintenance (Survival) Physical internal pushing - ? Physical external pulling - stability (Preservation) Physical external pushing - change (Ruin) Mental internal pulling - ? Mental internal pushing - ? Mental external pulling - acquisition (Dominion) Mental external pushing - distribution (Endowment) Spiritual internal pulling - integrity (Honor) Spiritual internal pushing - investiture (Endowment) Spiritual external pulling - love (Devotion) Spiritual external pushing - discernment (Odium) Temporal internal pulling - ? Temporal internal pushing - ? Temporal external pulling - ? Temporal external pushing - growing (Cultivation) The placement of shards may be off, but I think I've got it mostly correct. The best part is that it gives you an idea of what the remaining unknown shards could be. Here's some possibilities: Physical internal pulling - maintenance (Survival) Physical internal pushing - action (Vigor) Physical external pulling - stability (Preservation) Physical external pushing - change (Ruin) Mental internal pulling - education or memory (Enlightenment or Reminiscence) Mental internal pushing - imagination (Inspiration) Mental external pulling - acquisition (Dominion) Mental external pushing - distribution (Endowment) Spiritual internal pulling - integrity (Honor) Spiritual internal pushing - charity? (Endowment) Spiritual external pulling - affection (Devotion) Spiritual external pushing - discernment (Odium) Temporal internal pulling - youth or memory (Vitality or Reminiscence) Temporal internal pushing - (Prophecy?) Temporal external pulling - (Decay) Temporal external pushing - growing (Cultivation) So, that's my idea. Let me know what you think.

Questions I Asked Brandon Today
Chromium Compounder replied to Alsenoth's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Awesome. That's worth an up vote. I've always found it interesting that that happened right after she met Tolkien (Slowswift). It seemed to me like she learned everything she needed to know, and that Hoid would have told her, from Slowswift. Until I read that Slowswift was Tolkien I was putting together a theory that Slowswift was Hoid, and the reason she was spooked by Hoid was because subconsciously she saw through his disguise to see it was the same person. -
I like the theory that Odium doesn't like other shards working together. That does make them a bigger threat to him, but I think he would have wanted to go after Devotion anyway. I think Devotion is the closest thing to an opposite Odium has, so destroying Devotion would have been his top priority. Aona and Skai were likely working together to some degree, and since he was already on Sel he figured he should take Dominion out as well. I hadn't heard that quote. I wonder what kind of effect he had on Scadrial, and at what point he was there?

The origin of Adonalsium (the word)
Chromium Compounder replied to Khmauv's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think you're confusing Shards and Shard holders. Ati and Leras are the names of the holders of Ruin and Preservation, and the god metals are named after them. This is similar to how Aona is the name of the holder of Devotion, with Aons and AonDor being named after her. Similarly Skai was the name of the holder of Dominion and the Skaze are named after him. Also, Shard holders aren't the source of any power, and according to Shardic Lens Theory, not even the Shards themselves are the source of power, but they act as lenses which channel the power of creation into the world. EDIT: I think Adonalsium is what they called the power of the original holder, and they called the original holder something based off Adoni, meaning Lord. -
Interesting that no one has mentioned Adonalsium's relation to Adoni, the Hebrew word for lord. From the first time I heard the name Adonalsium I thought it was meant as a lord shard. In other words, Adonalsium is Lord of the Shards.
