Deepest ones and a person soulcast into stone
Clovermite replied to PewterAGoldF's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I suspect that soulcasting a person into stone would result in a kind of stone that doesn't have the same kind of special spren that most stone on Roshar has. -
Theory: Who is Walking the Way of Kings
Clovermite replied to stormlore's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Kaladin isn't taking the path of a king - he's not getting engaged in politics, he's on the ground making things happen. He does this both as a healer and a fighter. Kaladin thrives most when he's actively doing things, surrounded by people. We've seen that when he's isolated by status, performing the background adminstrative duties that a King would do most of the time, he tends to whither. Kinghood would only further isolate Kaladin, and it would restrict him in ways that he would hate. As King, he would not be allowed to risk his life in the way that he tends to prefer, so he can protect people. He posses much more freedom as a champion, or high level adviser who then takes direct action. On top of that, royalty is very much about bloodline. Kaladin doesn't possess royal blood. As much he's now become a symbol of hope, I see many objecting to elevating him to King status. Beyond that, Jasnah is already serving as an excellent ruler. There is no need to push Kaladin into that role Book 5 isn't the end of the Stormlight Archive, it's only the halfway point. If Dalinar is going to reforge the Oathpact, who out there would be more willing to sacrifice themself to protect everyone on Roshar than Kaladin? I would agree though, based on what we saw of him in Braize so far, that's he's probably been broken enough already that he would struggle to stay there for too long. As far as the need for "light again in the morning," that would come later in the series, perhaps even as earlier as book 6 or 7 where they defeat Taravagian and someone else steps in as "hero of ages" to unite Odium with another shard in order to temper the unbridled rage (perhaps this would be Dalinar uniting Odium and Honor to become War). At that point, the Oathpact could be dissolved, and Kaladin would be free to either pass on into the spiritual realm, or live out the rest of his life in peace. The light seems brighter after an eclipse than it does passing from dawn to noon. With the Urithiru becoming fully operational and fused joining Honor's side, the story is at a "dawn" stage - the humans have experienced many victories. At the same time, there is a lot of foreshadowing that there will be some serious defeats coming up in the next book. Nobody is expecting TaravOdium, and I don't see them winning against him in their first major conflict with him...not with five more books to go. -
Theory: Who is Walking the Way of Kings

I don't see Kaladin becoming a king. I don't think he would be very good at it. I could definitely see him taking up a place in the oathpact though, so that's an interesting theory. Is an oathpact really necessary at this point though? Odium has agreed to cease the war, and agreed not to leave the Rosharan system. Aren't those the two things that the Oathpact were created to enforce? I know Dalinar is pursuing it anyway, I'm just confused as to what it will achieve at this point, that his agreement with Odium hasn't already done. -
I'm not so sure about the names of the orders coming from the syunergies, but I do remember Brandon talking about each of the orders having a unique synergy ability for the two surges. I could see it being related to getting the "lesser" spren of their order to do something. I'd be interested to see what they Skybreak synergy would be. In fact, I'd be interested to see more division in general. We've seen a lot of the "sky" from skybreakers, but not much of their "break." It seems like division has the potential to be one of the flashiest surges in terms of war potential, so I'm disappointed we haven't seen more of it onscreen in the fights.

Oh that's a great point, I didn't think of that! I suppose Kelsier was fairly whimsical, maybe he would do well as a vessel for that shard, if its current owner ever dropped it.
-
Saw this in another thread: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/395/#e13074 I know others have already specified that the Yellowish Red glow means Odium, but I figured I'd add a WoB link that basically explicitly confirms it.

I like it - teaching a man/woman to fish rather than just giving it to him/her.
-
I thought Sazed was just referring to Wax. Is he considered too much Ruin to not also be part of Preservation?
-
I think you're really on to something here. My very first thought is that I want to see what you get when you combine Harmony light with War light. Haha, Rhythm of War gives a whole new perspective to the name "Lightsong." That's literally what Navani was researching - light songs. I wonder if this was an intentional allusion/foreshadowing to what was coming in later books, or just a happy accident.
-
Nice, great list and link! I completely forgot about luckspren, and the fact that they are the mandras that pull ships. I feel like these would actually go well with the willshapers, seeing as Lightspren/Reachers are so often sailors in the cognitive realm. I also completely forgot about concentrationspren. I think they would thematically fit the Truthwatchers better than anticipationspren. Re-reading the gravitationspren entry, I feel like they actually go well with skybreakers. I'm pretty sure that the Full Lashing comes from the adhesion surge, so I don't think bindspren fits as well.

My best guess is that the process of making heavily invested objects, or investiture itself, transportable varies for each shard or type of object/investiture. The ghost bloods probably haven't figured out how to do it for stormlight yet, and believe that it will be easier to do than investiture elsewhere. At the very least, Stormlight seems like the easiest form of nearly-raw investiture to acquire. Breaths must be freely given, and each person is only born with one. The metallic arts tend to make it difficult to generate a surplus of investiture, unless you have access to both Feruchemy and Allomancy. Certainly, Kelsier has access to both...but it's not particularly scalable if only person is capable of generating the investiture. On Sel, we're not sure if there is a way to distill the investiture accessed through Dor, and we know that the magic there tends to be tied to connection with the land, and that the cognitive realm there is dangerous. Taldain might work well, with the investiture being stored in the sand from the sunlight, but Autonomy locked that place down. Threnody is a mess, and we don't know of a way to get raw investiture from First of the Sun.

I'm a fan of this theory. The fact that "The Sovereign" left the bands of mourning lying around, and seems not to have re-established contact with Northern Scadrial suggests to me that Kelsier is no longer on the planet. At the very least, I think Mr "There's always another secret" would want to see Silverlight, having met Khriss and Nazh, let alone another planet. I think he probably chose some other planet to take over, becoming heavily invested in whatever magic system that particular planet uses. On the note of heavy investure, I've also heard someone, can't remember who, speculate that Kelsier picked up the ambition shard somehow. I don't have anything in the text to back it up, but I really like that theory. Having figured out how to get a body, I can totally see Kelsier setting his sights on regaining shardhood, and Ambition does seem like the shard most suited to him.

This is how I would imagine it. For example, perhaps you access the magic through laughter and amusement - both yours and others. I imagine a society where entertaining is considered the highest calling, and every city has some kind of theatre or arena at its center where the people gather for ritual magic that involves dueling entertainers. Perhaps these rituals provide food for the entire week, or energy to power their homes and devices. Perhaps, on this planet, the diligent, scholarly, and serious are considered outcasts. That is, until Dalinar shows up as Odium's champion and conquers the planet. It's hard to find such brutal carnage amusing, so most of the planet falls easily as they lose access to their powers. The outcasts then must learn to develop a macabre sense of humor in order to fight back. Perhaps this plays right into Teravodium's plan though - by learning to embrace a dark sense of humor, perhaps they grow to enjoy cruelty and they join Odium's forces in marching on other planets.

Now that we have confirmation that Windrunner plate is composed of Windspren, and WoB confirms that Elsecaller plate is composed of Logic spren (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/406/#e14477), I find myself wondering which spren the other orders use for their plate. I think Lightweavers fairly obviously use creation spren. Stonewards probably use rock spren.I would further guess that Edgedancers use life spren and Dustbringers/Releasers use flamespren. I don't know about the other orders though. and I'm wondering if people here have better ideas than I do. I'm guessing that Glory spren will be involved in some order - perhaps Willshapers (light spren seem similar looking in the physical realm) or Bondsmiths.Maybe anticipation spren for Truthwatchers? I feel like we know so little about this order, as Renarin is a special case. What does everyone else think?

It's the every otherest Thursday, which means it's time for a new episode of Lost Legends of Scadrial! Episode 10, in fact. Since we're using base 10, instead of binary, there are fewer than 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't. But if we were using binary, this would still be a recycled joke. Episode Summary: The Lost Legends return Bornham to the Lord Mistborn's Manor and set off on a quest to rescue Fluffles.
