    Emily squeezed her eyes shut, holding back the tears. "Why?" she thought, not realizing she was speaking aloud. "Why today of all days...?"

    The vines shot forth, curving in a dark smile. They attacked Ronin from every angle.

    A man constricted by dark vines. They grew from every orifice, their ends wiggling in the air like fingerless, boneless arms.

    "Demons!" they called as they fled.

    "When the world ends," replied Dale. "Take a mug if you'd like. I'd get out while you still can." With that, he disappeared into the back.

    Screams echoed from outside. The town was under siege.

    Emily was speechless for a few moments. "What do you mean?"

    "I was brought here," Pheonix said. "They told me to work. They, uh, didn't tell me what to work on." Emily stared at her sister. "...what?" she responded weakly. "Why... what?"

    "You too," said Emily sincerely. "Come on. Let's go home."

    Grace sighed. Another dead end. "You said there were a few that you knew," she continued. "What were the others?"

    Emily's eyes widened. NB could see her? How? She put a finger to her lips, then mouthed "Alone," and gestured to a side alcove. @Fallapede

    "I was brought here," Pheonix said. "They told me to work. They, uh, didn't tell me what to work on." -- Emily's breathed a sigh of relief as she entered the cavern behind the bald stranger. Her sister was here, alive and unhurt. Her dangerous voyage into the outside was over.
