  1. I feel that him doing this was a tool, he couldn't very well have the character not be able to remember the things that went on and the thoughts they had when the reader had read them thinking these things. It goes to show Jordan's planning and skill as an author that Mat does not have a PoV until after he is healed. Rereading this series just reminds me with every book the little things Jordan did, he didn't just write a story, he crafted it, everything he did he did for a reason and now being able to see those reasons come to life is amazing.
  2. JamesW, that's awesome... you'll love Pratchett!
  3. Yeah, I loved Glen Cook, great read, quite different from what you find today too! I just finished The Blinding Knife, pleased but not OMGWTFBBQ like I hoped for. Back to my WoT reread!

  5. The Future!, the unknown is > the known! Upon touching someone for the first time, would you rather instantly have complete knowledge of their entire past from birth to that moment, or of their entire future from that moment until their death?
  6. So a few months ago, I went into my local books store here in Canberra, Australia and found sitting on the shelf a hard cover USA copy of The Way of Kings, now I had purchased my own first edition, signed and numbered copy from Sam Wellers at release, so I didn't buy it but I did flick through it and considered buying it for a friend. I chose not to and sadly left it there. A few months later (two months ago now) I went back to the store and having done some research on printings/editions when I saw the book still there, I flicked through it again, only to discover to my surprise the number in the book... 0987654321 it was a first printing! Sitting in a book store in Canberra, Australia, two years after the release when they did three different printings before the release date! I couldn't help myself, clutching the book to my chest I took it up to the counter and purchased it (for a now very happy and surprised friend!), telling the very friendly and helpful bookstore attendant my find (knowing she herself was a huge Sanderson fan). It was crazy, it was awesome and the rush of excitement of finding a first printing was amazing! But that is not where my story ends... I've moved away from Canberra but I've come back to town this weekend and as always, I popped into my local boookstore, the same lovely bookstore attendant was on and she was helpfully making recomendations when she noticed they had gotten in another hard cover USA copy of The Way of Kings, knowing what I had found previously she flicked through the book, only to discover that it was also a first printing, she instantly clutched it to her chest with a look of glee. What are the chances of not one but two first printings to be found on the other side of the world from where they were printed two years after the book was released?! I just had to share my amazing story with you guys! Anyone else had a cool find like this?
  7. WoT has always been same day release here in Oz
  8. Sounds awesome, I've heard from someone with an ARC that it is just as good as the first!
  9. Yeah, looking forward for next week!
  10. This, so much this, I enjoyed Night Angel, but The Black Prism blew me away! So looking forward to The Blinding Knife, 11th of September if you didn't know!
  11. Here is a 'review' I've done for another reading based website, please let me know what you think. “The Eye of the World” Just opening this book instantly brings back memories of fifteen years ago when I first picked it up, I have to be careful while reading it as the cover is about to fall off and with it will go the first twenty or so pages. This series has been such a large part of my life for so long that I am hesitant in starting it as it will be the last I read it without the knowledge of how the story ends. Within a few pages Jordan throws me into his story of adventure and wonder that follows the three farm boys as they leave their village to escape what follows them and to explore the world. Jordan’s creativity and the depth of world building is amazing and his set ups are flawless. I get giddy when the boys reach Baerlon and I marvel at the foreshadowing that Jordan placed into this book that was published over twenty-two years ago, already I have lost my sadness about this being the last time I will read this book without knowing the fate of the characters and I am already looking forward to the next time I get to read it and be able to see all the little hints Jordan left in his books for us to be able to piece together what will happen. His skill as an author shine in this book, the pacing and foreshadowing are incredible, the details allow the imagination to run rampant and I would like to mention to the fans of the series, that we are introduced to bath time with the boys! I feel that the best example of Jordan’s skill as a writer in this book is not his world creation or foreshadowing but rather his skill in being able to give this book an epic feel without confusing the reader too much, even tho this book is definitely epic fantasy, unlike “A Game of Thrones”, which has eight different point of view characters or “The Way of Kings” which has six, Robert Jordan is able to convey the scope of the world with only three point of view main characters in the book. Still the scope of the world is there and the immersion is immense, is skills as a writer truly shine here. It is obvious when reading through this book that Jordan has pulled ideas from the likes of Tolkien, where he shows the reader ‘hey you know that thing you like, well here it is... but not how you expected it!’ What is more evident however is how many more writers today have pulled ideas from Jordan’s work to utilise in their own stories, there is little doubt that Jordan is the father of the modern day epic fantasy books that we are able to read today, due to Jordan leading the field. His writing has also been a driving force behind many of today’s new young authors in the field, most notable Brandon Sanderson who has been a fan of The Wheel of Time since the early ‘90’s and is the author responsible for completing the series after Jordan’s death. This book is a wonderful story that anyone who reads should enjoy, but if you read fantasy and haven’t read this, what are you waiting for?! ‘The Wheel of Time’ is a must read in the fantasy genre, it is genre defining and just plain old jaw-droppingly good, if you haven’t read it you should certainly do so now! (I also had a bit in there about how much I think the Rand section with the scarves and time being fuddled was brilliant and largely underappreciated by the audience but I cut it as I thought it would confuse anyone who hasn't read the book far too much)
  12. I think the age you are when you read them also matters, today Belgariad would probably get shelved in YA which they didn't have back then. I think 'The Redemption of Althalus' is his best adult targeted work and I'm more likely to recomend it or the Sparhawk triologies to adult readers.
  13. Elantris trilogy? when did we get info on the, I thought it was only going to have a sequel?
  14. It's english for "Oh hell those Battle Cruisers are going to %^&$ up my Brood Lords!" Also a Japanese battleship that fought in WWII and was sunk by the Americans in 1945, Gogo uselsess trivia!
  15. Good, enjoy the wonder that is WoK!
  16. Yeah if you love WoT, you'll love WoK! Go get a copy... like now... WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE?!?!
  17. I bought that a couple of weeks ago, looks really interesting, let me know how it goes. I've got it lined up to read either once I finish WoT or if I get to a stage where I need to read something different for a while!
  18. Isn't he walking on the roof before he kills the guards, or is that just where my brain took me? The Shin have obviously changed significantly since WoKPrime I wondered at the towers of the affluent Shin rising high, is the Shin area really that secluded from the highstorms that they can build wooden towers or are highstorms missing in WoKP?
  19. The first book grabbed me really hard, sucked me right in and I was pumped for the series, but as each book went further I lost interest. Certainly worth reading if anyone wants something different, or interested in trying an Aussie author.
  20. Worth reading, but nothing special. Certainly something a bit different.
  21. Watership Down To this day I reread it reguarly and it's been about twenty years since I first picked it up when I was seven or eight.
  22. He did change his mind on that slightly, given the fact he told Harriet to find someone to finish WoT, which he had previously stated he did not want. But yeah, Brandon has stated that he wants to release the notes however Harriet is hesitant as she doesn't want the last work from Jordan that we read to be unfinished stuff, she'd rather we remembered him for his polished work.
  23. Stu iirc they have a completed script that Brandon is happy with and they are looking for a studio to produce it.
  24. Try 'The Redemtion of Althalus', It's a book of his I still very much enjoy and it's a stand alone. His other stuff I loved as a young teenager in '97 or so but I don't feel the same draw to them today.
  25. How do you play mafia unless it's online? I'd be keen, bonus points if you make the characters themed from Sanderson's work!
