@Agent34 elantris chapter 32 spoiler

@Calderis @Toaster Retribution Sorry it took me so long to get back to you but I was more excited about the new chapters posted today and I had to dig to find the exact page in Elantris where Brandon writes "dark". I don't think Brandon writes dark just for fun -- it really is critical to the plot line, but still this scene--all three sentences of it--still bothers me and he is perfectly capable of writing gruesome scenes. Elantris Spoilers I promise you that when I read a scene with a beautiful woman mourning over the death of her husband, and seeing her young son stand up to the man that killed her husband and if an on-page/screen scene takes place where that son is also dead (or even thought to be dead) that I will be triggered and will react differently than someone who hasn't had my same life experiences. I am really trying to mentally prepare myself for that scene. I understand that what might be dark and disgusting to one reader, another reader will gloss over. That is what I love about this forum. Things are pointed out that I completely missed. It gives an insight to the author and also to the readers. It is helping me to become more aware of what I'm reading and to appreciate the writing! My first reactions without reading any other posts yet. Chapter 13: Chaperone And the Preface Puzzle clues continue: Read or listen. So the audience for Oathbringer is intended for both women and men. Strata: A Knife can't scratch it? Fascinating. We know others used chalk to mark it temporarily. That stone knob must have been pre-built into the wall. I love that we know she has so many sketches of the strata. She or Jasnah will look at them later and use these sketches to figure out the pattern in them to decipher their meaning. The fact that they can't be scratched tells me that they are preserved and hold great meaning. I love how the mysterious strata is described in this building of Urithiru's shadowed depths Twisting Madness curling towards darkness Mesmerizing Shallan is so modest. I find this hilarious as it at such odds with her personality. I also don't remember her being this way around Kaladin. She portrays herself differently with Adolin because the expectations are so different. OK -- What does this mean? I know it is significant but lack the proof to reason what/how it is important. Born under the sign of nine? Sounds like some serious foreshadowing going on here. Not to bring this up to rehash-- but I view this as evidence that Adolin will become the champion with 9 shadows--or perhaps fight the champion with 9 shadows. Adolin (Highprince of Fashion) @Stark discussing undergarments. This entire scene had me cracking up. Both characters were so true to themselves and the exchanges were brilliant. Loved these two together -- and I wasn't expecting to like them alone (well almost alone) together so much. Adolins "Secrets are important" line was almost my favorite line in this chapter. (No Mating! by pattern wins that award. Can't wait to quote that to my teenagers as they head out for the night.) I think that will either be what brings Adolin & Shallan together (they both have secrets that they murdered secretly) or the one thing that drives them apart because they just can't understand the other one without the entire truth and they will judge the other for basically being what they themselves are. Pattern What is up with all the spren being so curious about mating? What if the spren hook up with other spren? Last weeks posts had me laughing so much about Syl's interests in the subject. But please remember that teenagers are reading these posts too and last week I had to explain a few. (but yet I'm still laughing) May Aladar She is off screen -- but we are getting something from her. Who put her in charge of that report? Seeing this report makes me think that Shallan will be the one to figure out it was Adolin that killed Sadeus. But maybe it will be May? Ash's eyes Is this a new saying/curse? I don't recall hearing it before. Storms, what does it really mean/signify? Why is being not good at relationships worse for Adolin? Is it because he is "royalty"? That is the only thing I can think of but I'm not sure that is what he meant. I was intrigued by the use of the word casting in the above line. It reminded me of soul casting. Not sure if it is connected somehow but just as a sun casts its powerful light and we can recreate it with electricity how is soul casting recreating or imitating another power? SPREN OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 13: Chaperone Shallanspren Shamespren COLOR OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 13: Chaperone Black upper reaches blue uniform sun casting ruby & topaz light soft yellow (wine) Chapter 14: Squires Can't Capture Is this foreshadowing that squires can't capture their own spren? hmmmmm The paint myself line made me think of Shallan Dim light. (Surrounded by dim minded group of people) Who are not as dim as they once were. I bet in the next scene we will see the light increase as the capacity and understanding of the parshmen increase. Voidbringers It looked like their forms have changed somehow but yet they still have individual memories of their experiences of life. Experiencing frustration seems to be a new emotion for them? SPREN OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 14: Squires Can't Capture None stated COLOR OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 14: Squires Can't Capture marbled white and red skin deep red or black (skin like Rlain) No red eyes Dark red beard (male) glowing yellow ribbon ( sounds like a bonded spren to me) Chapter 15: Brightness Radiant he he he -- so much fun to hear Shallan speculate on the murderer when he is right in front of her!!! She will probably only care to solve it because she want to "help" or impress Adolin. Then when she does she will be shocked! I loved their dialog and the "innocence" of it all. uh? When does she expect to take him to Shadesmar? Its not like most people get to experience that! Shallan is so insecure! Her poor broken soul! She is hiding from herself. Are she and Adolin opposites or the same? This betrothal is important to her. So did Adolin earn his blade? How? I just assumed he got it from his mom or dad. I thought it was a given but apparently not -- he dreamed for years for it. I loved Adolin's passion and respect for all the shards. (Bland, Plate, & Mount) How long has Zahel been interacting with the Kholin family? The "long ago" comment made me wonder. What if Shallan accidentally kills Adolin while they are sparring? I mean -- what if Pattern kills Shallan because he doesn't understand the nuances of Adolin being the murderer? This would be after Shallan truly fell in love with Adolin of course. That would be more hurtful than with of her parents deaths. As I said above, Shallan & Adolin will either work because of their mutual deception (hiding their true murderous selves) or they won't. By enhancing herself Shallan is gaining confidence -- which is all well and good -- but she is not opening up her true self for love. (She loathes herself anyway) It will be fun to see how Jasnah reacts to all these new relationships that formed while she was away. Wow -- almost like Stormlight behind those eyes. I know there is more to that but I don't grasp it fully now. What power/influence/connection does Adolin and possibly many lighteyes already have? OK -- So Pattern hums all the time. This time when I read this I thought of the Parshindi and how they hum. I'm not sure that I have heard them attune confusion, but Eshoni was confused, or pretending to be in the prologue of Oathbringer. I'm guessing that Pattern's language is closer to the Parshindi than it is to the language Shallan speaks. The humming sounds close to the rhythms. Probably inspired by the same influence. Hopefully Pattern can help Shallon understand the parshmen/parshindi. Our little girl, for once is secure, (albeit she experienced this while not completely 100% her raw self) and Adolin was the one that brought her this peace. Sweet dreams Shallon. I hope it lasts. Here are some of the responses I had the time to respond too I didn't make it through the entire thread this week This is a huge time commitment to keep up with -- but one that I'm enjoying - so keep the comments coming sorry if some of these have already been hashed out I did not notice that but I love that you pointed that out. I'll be watching. We know that "Unite Them" probably means unite all the inhabitants of the planet so eventually these skill sets will be in "everyone's" interests and eventual compliment those they are opposing now Dalinar totally could have disarmed the child without hurting him The child was not bonded to the sword yet all he had to do was drop it or distract him somehow or talk him into giving it to him the man the sword was bonded to was dead Well the shin believe the stones and the storm lights are sacred. They must understand the Spren behind the fabrials on a different level. They most likely don't feel comfortable catching and enslaving the Spren. I'm assuming that just as water and stone are represented differently in the cognitive realm that grass is too. And the shin understand that somehow. I forgot about that guy. Good reminder! Oh Elokhar. And I thought he wasn't there because he wasn't a KR or assisting one. Highprince of Fashion! Adolin will forever be known that to me thank you dear @Stark Hmmmmm. Then anyone could use the honor blade. Very very interesting idea. Ahhh Tarah. I want a Tarah flashback. Thank you, thank you, thank you. im not sure I would have ever picked up on that but I'm looking at the Ars Arcanum differently now. I need a bookmark made out of that! Yup, yup, yup. UNITE THEM I want to know about out his son and any other Kohler Relatives. Are there more brothers, uncles, cousins? It seems like I should know more about the Kholin Family tree Have you read Elantris? There is that one scene that is so dark that I won't let my kids give that book away for gifts/presents. And I'm still hesitant to let my tween daughter read it I've deflected her from it several times but I have a rule that my kids can read any book on my bookshelf and she will read it soon and my older kids have read it, but it still gives me nightmares sometimes. And not only more from that invasion, but perhaps another event that happened there many years apart.

Here are my reactions to chapters 10-12 I haven't read any other posts yet. Chapter 10: Distractions Sounds like Jasnah again or perhaps Shallan. But seriously I'm not going to think about this anymore Chuckling at that! Looking forward to seeing Lift and having some pancakes soon. Kaladin is smiling and chucked -- even when the weather was gloomy outside? He is relaxed now. I loved the conversations with Syl. It really is like he has an imaginary friend. I want my own spren to talk to. Gumfrems: So I just searched the kindle version of both WoK & WoR (yes I broke down and bought it) and yes this is a new word. Haven't heard this before but the soulcasting of meat is fascinating. I didn't comprehend that a certain type of gem was necessary to create food. I remember that Jasnah used three different types of gem in her soulcaster but then again she didn't soulcast meat. (The jam was her only food she soulcast, right? and the wine/blood that Shallan soulcast) I think it is saying here that you need a gumfrem gem to soulcast meat. Is that what everyone else understood? Gumfrem. It is fun to say. I want some Rutabaga with my Gumfrem please! SYLBLADE: This made me laugh. I like it though. The Blade is indeed a symbol and I like how KAladin understood that her. VOIDBRINGERS: They do not appear to be "dull" and they are wise enough to know they need food. The chose to pillage rather that attack. The Ringing in the Ear intrigues me. Was it a rhythm that was heard that is staying? Was it a type of hypnosis? The fact the the "parshmen" are not attacking reminds me of what Mr Taravangian says in WoR interlude 14, about needing the people population, someone to work and to govern over. And thanks to Syl for pointing out the "I'll try not to make it weird" love triangle brews between Kaladin, Shallan, and Adolin. (but I still think Renarin is falling for Shallan (I know many of you disagree but I'm sticking to it @ccstat )). A love quadrangle? It is interesting that despite being a Radiant (equal to Shallan) that Kaladin still views himself as not being able to be with Shallan because he is a dark-eye. (the fact that she is betrothed to Adolin was almost an afterthought). I was blushing during this segment and have decided that I'm ok without having a spren to talk to. Especially during those intimate moments in my life. How will the spren play into a possible romantic relationship? This could indeed get very strange. What if you liked someone and they liked you but your spren didn't like each other? Adolin Why not just change the POV in the middle of the chapter? Just when I thought you were doing shorter chapters . . . . . BLADE, PLATE, MOUNT = I fully expect to learn the history behind each of these 3 things from Dalinar's past and possibly others as well. (Gavilar, Sadeus) Yes -- I know Adolin has a hurt wrist. Thanks for the reminder. Again. I'm glad that Adolin is getting in some horse therapy to help him deal with being murdering Sadeus. He needed something to calm him down. GLYS & SYL those letters seem awfully similar. Are those two spren friends? related somehow? so when Glys & Syl die, will they become a Shardblade? I don't think that is what happened to Sly when she "died" Maybe if their human dies while they are bonded? Interesting. Renarin can heal others!!!!!!!! Just like YM. (Thanks @Agent34 for pointing out the shoemaker/cobblers name) I so want someone to have this healing power. I'm glad Adolin's wrist is all better now! SPREN OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 10: Distractions rainspren (blue candles) anticipationspren COLOR OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 10: Distractions red lights (in eyes) one watery blue eye (Gallant the Horse) blue candles (rainspren) Chapter 11: The Rift So this chapter just made me sick. I hadn't read it before and I am sick to my stomach. Here are some things I wrote down. Rathalus is the name of the city and the Rift is the nickname. The Rift was not a name of the battle. Thakka was there. So was Teleb. A lot of people have reason to really loathe the Blackthorn. Just like Moash held a grudge against Roshone, there are a lot of people who have good reason to detest Dalinar. I know he has changed -- but I think some of his past actions will come to haunt him as the future leader when he tries to unite others. What an amazing line Dalinar says about Sadeus. "He'll find one of his own (shardblade) eventually." It makes the sacrifice Dalinar made of the Oathbringer sword to Sadeus even more poignant now that we know the history. Found out What? My only guess is that he was referring to the Thrill and to his addiction to it? I don't think I am right though. Found out why he was fighting? and why is Gavilar the one asking Dalinar why they are fighting? I thought that it was Dalinar who just did what his brother told him to do. When did this change? and Why are they fighting? To take Dalinar's mind off Navani? I liked hearing more of the history of Oathbringer and the Sunmaker even though the scene made me sick. I also liked how Gavilar having a little girl (Jasnah) seemed to change him. Does Sadeus have kids? I don't recall any. Also -- are there any other Kohler siblings? Or is it just Gavilar & Dalinar? SPREN OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 11: The Rift anticipationspren lifespren angerspren painspren exhastionspren COLOR OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 11: The Rift bright blue (Gavilar's clothes) stark white plumes (Tanalan) (could this be a sign of his innocence?) glowing bits of Ruby black arrow Dalinar saw red pale green eyes (Gavilar) Chapter 12: Negotiations Windows! (Plural) more that one "Men like you . . . no better, no worse" -- That gives me hope, but also makes me sick at the same time. also "He was not the youth he had once been" (Thank the storms!) Ouch! Hello Mysterious May! I am still waiting to find out more about you. --- I really need to re-read Edgedancer. Like today. So did Azir (the city) cast only one long, long shadow? (as opposed to 9) and was it in the correct direction???? Hidden Weapon that can help with Flight? uh? Will the Stormfather carry someone? Thaylen Merchant? Who could that possibly be? Love the usurp thrones comment from Elhokar and the idea of a highking. There was lots of speculation about the "emperor" or something, but HighKing seems to fit. WHAT WORDS did Elhokar speak? Were they important words? How important were those words? --- Riots (I just reread WoR Interlude 12, (Lhan) which totally explains what was going on with those riots and the queen in case you want to know where to reread that. page 893. -- And Mr Taravangian. (page 901 for his WoR interlude 14 on how he became the King) I guess that Mr T is doing his best to keep his enemies close to him. It doesn't sound like Dalinar remembers Mr T as a friend of Gavilar's but he was so drunk that he may not have remembered him being there the night Gavilar was killed by Szeth. How much will those two work together? Sounds like Dalinar will show all his chips and then Mr T will decide where they fall. Who is Taravangian's radiant? Is it Adrotagia? I wish I could warn Dalinar . . . . . . . . . this will be interesting. Hi ya! I know I am late to the game for these chapters, but I was lying in bed looking forward to reading tomorrows chapters and I just had to get up and post my thoughts on last weeks chapters. My daughter broke her arm and had to have surgery last week so I was away from my computer a lot. I tried posting once from my phone, but I lost the post and after spending so much time on it I grew frustrated. I took notes on my reactions to these chapters when I first read them. I haven't read anything online about these chapters yet, so I'm sure there will be lots of redundancies and my post is already old news but I felt the need to document them anyway. I hope to get to read the entire thread sometime in the future. Chapter 7: A Watcher at the Rim OK -- so I feel like I am having whiplash here. I just can't make up my mind as to who wrote this. My first thought was that Gavalir wrote it. Sanderson would bring him back to life. Then I thought -- that can't be. Now I think that in world Oathbringer is being written by one of the Heralds who went to purgatory instead of dying. But which one? But at the very beginning of WoK it says that they did die. I am sure that one of you has the answers out there. I'm more confused than ever. I'm giving up guessing. (for now anyway) Super excited that this chapter starts right where we left off with Kaladin. Why are all these POV's split up into chapters that are concurrent? Seems odd to me. But I really like the different chapter names. Maybe that is why. Maybe it is to get smaller snippets of the Oathbringer Preface. Maybe it is so I can find these parts later faster when I want to reread them? Roshone is conscious after all. I loved Syl's reaction "He probably deserved that!" I guess she will stay with Kaladin a bit longer. Kaladain Happy? Really. Wasn't expecting that adjective to describe him. Still not seeing any happyspren though so I'm sure if I believe it. Lirin treating Kal as a child. I think that we all experience that to some extent when we go back to our parents/siblings. It is so easy to slip back into those old roles. Kaladin is very human. So there was much debate as to whether or not Kaladin was going to use Syl or not to "prove" himself. I really didn't want him to have to use Sly as a shardblade -- but how this came about in response to Roshone's question “And what,” Roshone said, “makes you think you can order anyone around, boy?” Seems natural and not egotistical. I'm surprisingly ok with how this played out. Although I am with Lirin and still shaking my head. That is my favorite line this chapter. It was almost as satisfying as the punch! SPANREED! After such a long discussion about this last week it was answered so clearly. I laughed so hard when I read this because all that speculation was answered so quickly and completely. I would have never understood the significance of this tiny explanation had it not been for all the discussion, so thank you for making this sentence meaningful. Laral! Laral! Light-eyed Laral is on-screen. I love how she is respected by those in her house and how she says she doesn't need saving. Very interesting use of the word Save here. I also found it interesting Kaladin's openness with her. He really did slip back into his old, carefree self with her. Killer Kaladin. I wonder what Lirin will say if/when Kaladin starts to heal with stormlight. I really want Kaladin to heal that boy they are working on like the shoemaker was able to do. ORODEN!!!! What? So I saw some threads about a younger sibling for Kaladin -- but I didn't ever read them. I guess I better go back and read them. I'm guessing that there will be some story arc in Stormlight books 6-10 where Oroden is a major character and where Oroden will get to see peace even if everyone else dies. Do we know why (the logic behind) his name means peace? Still nothing really new on the Voidbringers Overall I enjoyed this chapter quite a bit. The body language in this chapter conveyed so much. I could feel the tenseness from the very beginning of the chapter when Lirin put his hand on Kaladin's shoulder to the end when Kaladin hovered and flew out of sight. You could sum up the chapter in these words. Looking up as to where the phrase "A watcher at the Rim" was mentioned before. It was in WoK in a Dalinar vision. SPREN OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 7: A Watcher at the Rim angerspren rotspren awespren (blue ring) COLOR OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 7: A Watcher at the Rim red lightning pale green eyes (Laral) tail of black, peppered with blond (Laral's hair) sapphire blue ring (awespren) feeling his eyes bleed to blue (Kaladin) Chapter 8: A Powerful Lie Yay. Shallan. I am actually excited to read her now after all this anticipation. She is pretending to be an Elsecaller. Did I know that already? Of course she is pretending. My favorite quote from this chapter. So obviously this layered stone is significant. Is it a form of artisans script somehow? Is it its own language? A map? What is it made of? The mistborn reader me really wants to know its chemical structure. This quote echo's Shallan's drawings of the "impossibly high" tower. Is this a sign that the task they have to perform is impossibly high and they can't see the big picture of what needs to happen. What are the boundaries of Urithiru anyway. I know it is tall/high but what is on the edges/outskirts of the city? Is it on a big plateau or can they journey from it? OK -- The Map is AWESOME!!!! I love the possibilities of the "powers" converging. Are Shallan & Dalinar next to eachother in the circle I saw once? I need to go find that. Can you only connect with someone you share an attribute with or can any of the ten orders form a new combination? It appears that Dalinar hasn't forgotten Navani, so that speculation that he forgot his "wife" or whoever he is married to is probably null now. It was a fun idea anyway. Ten Kingdoms/Ten Cities/Ten Oathgates/Ten Heralds/Ten books in the Stormlight Series. I'd list them all here but I'm sure someone has already done it. Renarin's reaction to the "man with nine shadows" It sounds like Renarin has seen this before or is at least familiar with it. I recall Jasnah's prologue when her shadows went all in different directions. I still don't understand those connections -- but Renarin seems to. What???? Another MURDER?????? Who?????? SPREN OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 8: A Powerful Lie coldspren windspren COLOR OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 8: A Powerful Lie Gold & Red (Hatham's) varied hue (stone) wide reddish strata yellow ones (strata lines) blond hair, patched with yellow (Renarin) plains shone gree red eyes Chapter 9: Threads of a Screw Shallan again. I would have really expected these last two chapters to be combined. But they did leave us on a cliff hanger. Good thing I didn't have a week to speculate of who died. I never would have guessed . . . . . . glad I wasn't attached to Vedeker Perel from Sebarial's Army. I wonder if he is a random guy or if we will get some Sebarial flashbacks with him in them. How long would the map have lasted if Dalinar and Shallan both stayed there? again we are reminded of Adolin's hurt wrist/hand. I'm not even sure if I remember how it was hurt -- but I sure haven't forgotten that it is. Obviously she will sketch this in the future and find the hidden message in it. I mean the entire chapter is named after this future sketch. Again I wonder how similar this is to Artisans script in WarBreaker. OK -- so Adolin is not the Assassin (this time) Navani is very interested. Will she be the one to solve it? Has someone found the sword Oathbringer yet? What is our day count since Sadeus was found? Seriously? Blushing? A love triangle between Adolin, Shallan, and Renarin? I've been rereading WoR and seen/noticed a few other times where this is being set up. I wonder how much they have been "practicing" their skills together. Adolin is now the Investigator. Loved how he referred to the king's saddle investigation. Lots of people speculated this would happen. Who witnessed Sadeus's murder that would know how to place the body? I don't even remember. Better go look that up. You won't have to miss her for long Dalinar. I'm still looking forward to Jasnah's reaction to Dalinar & Navani's wedding. Renarin watched Shallan chase after his brother. How does that make him feel? Yup another weird love triangle getting set up. Where does the two-armed Herdazain keep his armies? In his sleevies!

Indeed! Now that would be an interesting parallel if that happened. Adolin the Assassin!

I have read every post in this thread now. An entire 18 pages. It was a time-sucker for sure, but I learned so much from so many of you. Thank you all for taking the time to post your ideas. I want to specifically thank those that *Spoiled* or *Hid Contents* for the Thrill. I haven't read those chapters yet and was shocked to see Shshshshsh's name on this thread without being spoiled. But I suppose that is a risk I took getting online. If you haven't already done so, please go back and edit your Shshshshsh posts in this thread to be *Hidden* so others can choose to see her name or not. Many of my reactions to posts have already been explained or echoed by others so I won't repeat them. I ran out of upvotes during my 3 day read of this thread, but if I really liked what you said I may drop you a message if I have time. Here are a few points that either I want to be on the record for agreeing with, that I wanted to clarify, an perspective to share, or questions that I still have. (I have read all of the cosmere now, but probably not in the right order -- My first experience with Edgedancer was at a book signing where Brandon read parts of it. I hadn't even finished part one of WoK yet. Obviously I didn't understand the implications of Lift's story and how it connected to Stormlight when I heard it. So some of my questions may be naive) I multi-quoted on my phone, but I'm typing this on my computer now and they didn't carry over so I apologize in advance for not using direct quotes. If you want me to add your quote to this afterwards send me a message and I can edit it in later. Navani's Red Wedding Dress -- thanks to everyone who explained that a red wedding dress was traditional for some cultures. I was more concerned about how her dress was the same color as the "evil" storm. Red Lighting. Red for Luck. Red Eyes. If the storm was orange and her dress was orange, it would have told me that her marriage is going to be stormy. My take away from Navani's red dress and the red storm that was going on during their ceremony was an indication that their marriage was going to be a stormy marriage and that only a bit of luck with get them through. Its a great use of literary allusion. Shallan I think that she is studying and reflecting and exhausted. Maybe a bit in shock still. Maybe hiding out and while she is quiet around others -- still talking to Pattern quiet a bit off screen. Navigating her relationship with Adolin. I like who ever said she was tired from operating the oathgates. And as for Dalinar not noticing her much -- he was getting married! His mind was on other things. He was anxious that the Stormfather would show up and I bet was looking forward to Husband/Wife time. Moash & Sadeus I am seeing a parallel between the relationship between Dalinar & Sadeus and Kaladin & Moash. They both consider the other a friend, even though they were both betrayed by them. Dalinar & Kaladin both value friendship. I think that just as the idea of murdering Sadeus was an impossible idea for Dalinar, it will be for Kaladin as well. They know the good traits of their friends and even betrayal doesn't blind them to the good that they still perceive in them. Kaladin The more I re-read these chapters the more I am struck by the name of chapter 6. Four Lifetimes. These are the 4 lifetimes that he has had since he left home. He doesn't even mention his lifetime as a child or a surgeon's apprentice. These lifetimes will all converge as he tells his parents his story. (Which I hope I get to hear how Kaladin describes/sums up his experience to him). I am in the "please don't pull out your shardblade now" camp. Kaladin has always disdained others when they pulled rank on him. Just because Kaladin has rank now, he is not going to use it. That is not who he is. He is not a bully. He is a protector. Now as for Kaladin's slave brands. I can't help but draw a parallel to Jesus Christ in the Christianity religion on this topic. Christians believe that when Christ was resurrected that his body was made perfect/whole/healed. However, he still retained the spear mark on his side and the wound marks on his hands. Christ had the power to heal those wounds but chose not to because it *proved* who he was. I'm not so sure that Kaladin's slave brands are going to heal. If they did -- it would make his story less memorable to those who would meet him in the future. The Letter Does anyone have a quote as to where I can find this letter. I have some vague memory of it but can't seem to find it. Do we know what it said? I think I remember Kaladin paying someone to write and send it. I have another memory of Tarah sending letters for Kaladin but I can't find that either. I don't think that Kaladin had met Tarah when Tein had died but I don't think we know yet exactly when they met yet either. <time for my tin foil hat> What if Tarah remembered where Kaladin had lived and came to visit his parents? What if Tarah was the person occupying the space in his house? That would be fun. I am looking forward to hearing more about their love story. I hope it is in this book so I don't have to wait till book four! /<tin foil> Shshshshsh and the Curse/Boon. I think that the Thrill is also connected somehow to the Curse/Boon. I hope we find out soon. I love to hear other peoples ideas on this. Single Glass Pane So Awesome! again -- loved reading all the theories on that. I'm out of time for now. I still have more thoughts and a question or two. I'll try to get them posted later while they are still somewhat relevant.
-
@PatronOfRot mentioned a theory that I really thought was interesting. He speculated if Dalinar's boon/curse was to forget "shshshsh" or to forget his "wife". If it was to forget his wife then he and Navani will have a hard time keeping those oaths they made.

When you are driving past an open field and see lots of little spots of golden color mixed in the grass and you get excited and point and shout out Look at all the Gloryspren! Then the people in the car with you ask what you were pointing at and they think gloryspren is a type of flower they haven't seen before -
My first impressions of Chapter 6 Four Lifetimes (I still haven't read any other posts in this thread yet -- but I'm anxious to read what the rest of you are thinking!) So who is Jasnah talking about when she says "some who saw further than I did" That doesn't make sense to me now. Taravangian? Who else is seeing the future? I'm excited for Jasnah to come back. She has been dead for so long (almost the entire Words of Radiance book) that I didn't even consider what her reaction would be to her mom marrying Dalinar until now. That will be interesting. Jasnah isn't listed as a POV in part one, so who will see it from? But we do have her writings . . . . . And why is Jasnah writing something called Oathbringer? Finally I get to see how the rest of Kaladin's journey plays out. I assumed that since there was a chapter break, that the POV would change. I guessed incorrectly. Kaladin's description sounds so dreamy! But yet people are not recognizing him. He is just too handsome. I enjoyed the "memory lane" The fact that Kaladin couldn't relax and enjoy the moment with his parents without telling them that he let Tien die, says a lot about his guilt. Brandon Sanderson resurrects another character! Kaladin is alive! That just made me laugh. Yup, it is a Sanderson book all right. So I'm pretty sure I'm missing something / or should remember something about the significance of the Sas & Shash -- but I can't recall anything. 4 Lifetimes Soldier Slave Captain Radiant -- That was just beautiful. I was almost in tears. Very poetic. Who is Mara? I don't remember her. I think she is new. Have we been introduced to her yet? Is that the something else Kaladin needs to know? Is Kaladin's spot now dedicated to Mara? What is being hinted at in the following lines? Has Kaladin been replaced? Will that make it easier for him to leave his family and return to Bridge 4 now? And what about Syl's quote What does that mean for our windrunner? And the winds in the storms -- shouldn't the directions of a storm be controlled by the wind? And who in the cosmere is behind that other voice? Who would say “They’re like I remember them.” . My only guess is Tien. Can't wait to see what other people's thoughts on this are. And my favorite line out this chapter? I just love this so much!!!!! It is foreshadowing, and reflective (in fact -- he hit & killed a lighteyes in shardplate), and so clever and so funny. Kaladin is still loyal to Moash. Hitting Roshone was idiotic, but we know it will all turn out ok. A very satisfying ending. I just wish I could turn the page and keep reading. My first impressions of Chapter 5 Hearthstone (I still haven't read any other posts in this thread yet -- but I promise I will get to them) Its Jasnah! Why didn't I see it before. Godless heretic. Of course it is Jasnah. Jasnah is on the cover of Oathbringer. Of course it is Jasnah. How could I have ever thought it was Navani? I mean, I already read about this experience she is referring to. (I'm sure that if I had just kept reading after the last chapter I wouldn't have even remembered that at one time I even considered Navani as the author -- getting these chapters in pieces and recording my micro-reactions is such a different experience -- I'm not sure what to think of it yet) Kaladin's Journey So, I've read this scene before -- or parts of it. I'm pretty sure that Sneaky Sanderson left the following line out of the version I read online awhile ago. So nothing happened at all to the spheres in the Everstorm. Nothing. (Confirmed a second time) So how long will Roshar go without Stormlight? The normal time during the weeping? Or will it be longer? How will our Radiants be radiant without stormlight? I don't have much else to say. Perhaps because I've seen this before. But why does it end here? I really, really want more. I am not satisfied. SPREN OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 5: Hearthstone lifespren rainspren -- blue candles with eyes gloomspren (long, grey, like a tattered streamer of cloth) COLOR OBSERVATIONS for Oathbringer Chapter 5: Hearthstone vibrant green grass motes of green dust yellowish patches (of grass) Red storm Your eyes are brown again (Kaladin's eyes -- Syl speaking) glassy light blue (Kaladin's eyes) pale while blue (description of Syl) blue candles (rainspren) grey (gloomspren)

I haven't read any other posts in this thread yet (I will get them eventually -- didn't want to spoil my first impressions) -- but here are my thoughts/impressions/questions regarding Chapter 4 Oaths. I loved this chapter!!!! So much going on. So after reading this chapter, I am convinced that in book Oathbringer is written by Navani. There is so much going on in the first part of this chapter about Navani's hands. So the question is -- what has been uncovered by Navani's hands and what has her hands written about in Oathbringer??? The color Red. Red was mentioned many times in the chapter. Red Lightning in Black Coulds, Red Eyes in the Blackness below. But it was also mentioned on Navani's blushing Red nails, and her wedding dress was Red! Red for Luck. Who has a red wedding dress? And obviously she had it for awhile. (My favorite line in the entire chapter was I'm getting the feeling that Navani has some sinister reasons marrying Dalinar and that by the end of the book, we will all wish/hope that they had never gotten married in the first place. This is evidenced by the fact that Stormfather called her out on having broken oaths before and the Gloryspren around her after their marriage. Why gloryspren. She won. Why was getting marrying Dalinar something to win? She didn't even get a real proposal. I believe that Dalinar will be taking those words back soon. We will soon learn what Oaths Navani has broken in the past, and I believe now that Dalinar would have never married Navani had he remembered Shshshsh, his wife. I believe that Dalinar said earlier in previous books that he has never told anyone, not even his sons that he can't remember Shshshsh. He told Navani this before they were married. The first person he admitted this to. Navani had a chance here to tell him what she knows he forgot -- but she didn't because she didn't want to ruin their wedding. It sound to me that Navani knew what his other burse/boon was and now she knows both. Dalinar opened his heart to Navani and was honest with her. She wasn't open and host back because she has alternate motives. She doesn't love him. Dalinar won't break the oath of this marriage because it was to the stormfather. This will be quite the problem later. He will lose his bond with the Stormfather if he breaks his marriage oath. (BTW -- He was the first in a Millennia to Bind Stormfather -- so that means that Gavilar did not bind him!) Dalinar & his past As I've mentioned before, I am steeling myself to really be disgusted with Dalinar. It will be worse than discovering Shallan's past. "Words are the most important things in my life right now" So I guess he did what Gavilar told him to. He found those important words. I think we will find out a time in Dalinar's life when he didn't "always love" Navani. It will be exciting to see the flashbacks of the Rift, Rathalas and such. Somthing to look forward to. So much foreshadowing here. Random Thoughts My second favorite quote in this chapter is I think this plays into the Cosmere and I love it. What is the Pedigree of the Gods? The Everstorm did not recharge spheres! At all!!!!! Sprens are remnants of shards? Stormfather is the largest remnant of Honor!!!! Chanada -- have we seen her yet? I don't remember. Who is she? Sounds important. I love it that May Aladar was at the wedding. She will be a player -- I'm sure. And last but not least here is a list of spren that were mentioned in this chapter, followed by a list of colors referred to in this chapter. (Is there an ongoing list of types of spren somewhere?) passionspren windspren starspren smokey blue awespren rings gloryspren joyspren Red Lighting in Everstorm Black Clouds Blushing Red nails (Navani) Blackness below red eyes violet eyes -- Navani Jade (wedding headdress) Turquoise (wedding headdress) Red for Luck (Navani's wedding dress) Gold (Thread on Navani's wedding dress) Golden coat (Elhokar's coat) Golden lights of Gloryspren light violet eyes (Kadash)

@CalderisThank you so much for this explanation. All sorts of things are coming together in my head. I think my brain is about to burst. I love these books!!!

@Calderis Fascinating insight on the dark eyes. We just searched WoK for the word orange, and it had about 45 instances. Mostly about wine, fire / light, and clothing. Mr T was wearing an orange robe. I don't have a digital copy of WoR. Maybe its time to get one. (But I already own 2 hard-copies, and the audio-book.) I wish there was a bundle I could buy that had all three together.

Aren't Venli's eye's violet? I really like your idea that the three moons are symbolic for the shards. It makes complete sense to me. I already wanted to look / highlight colors & numbers on my next re-read, but now I am even more excited about it. Eye color. So does that mean than Venli is being influenced by Odium? That when Kaladin has stormlight that Honor's power is with him because his eyes turn blue. Shallan has green eyes. So she is of Cultivation? And what about Kalami -- the thin, orange-eyed woman that was a senior scribe that you @Ciridae recently brought up in the below post. Did you ever find find out if there is anyone else with Orange eyes? Is there an orange moon missing? Or is Kalami a world-hopper? All the light-eyes have a color to them. I think all the dark-eyes are just dark -- void of any color -- but I am not completely sure on that. So are light-eyes, more susceptible to the influence of the Shard that is linked to their corresponding eye color? This idea just opened up a lot of possibilities. Anyone out there able to offer more support or refute this connection theory?

Wow! This is great. Thanks @OrangeJedi for posting the word counts. Very interesting. I feel somewhat validated in feeling that something was missing! (It was half the length I was accustomed to) @vividox , @ElephantEarwax , @frozndevl , @Knotai , @narkis , @Toaster Retribution @ICanDream @Necessary Eagle @Jaconis @Nymeros Wanted to make sure you guys saw this word count post. Perhaps the shorter word count is the reason some of the writing seems a bit off, or simple, or easy, or a Young Adult Fiction feel. Maybe it isn't just because we are reading it on a computer screen or getting it a few pieces at a time. The chapters really are shorter. @Calderis, I like your observation that we will get more PoVs this way.

I agree with your assessment that the first two chapters read more like a Young Adult novel. That is a good way to describe it. I enjoyed reading all the responses your post generated. But that being said, I think I pulled an all-nighter finishing The Rithmatist, and I recently finished Steelheart in a day. Brandon Sanderson's Young Adult novels are great and hard to put down. I did feel that Chapters 1 & 2 read quickly though. Similar to my recent experience with Steehleart. But maybe they only read quickly because I've been anticipating them for such a long time. Its like when you eat too much too food on Thanksgiving. I devoured the chapters! I had my appetizer! Please bring my me meal. I'm looking forward to November. (And not for Thanksgiving!) #Oathvember @Toaster Retribution

I just finished reading all 12 pages of comments in the thread! (I took me three days) They have been so thought-provoking. Here are some of my thoughts. Writing Quality @vividox Initially when I read the Eshoni’s Prologue I was very disappointed with the writing. After re-reading Szeth’s & Jasnah’s prologues, I realized that all of Eshoni’s POVs are more simple. The descriptions don’t include random spren hanging out. Eshoni doesn’t seem to notice the Roshar spren as often – she is too busy attuning her rhythms. Which happen to be called the same names of the spren. Example Rhythm of Awe and awespren. – So how are the Rhythms connected to the corresponding spren? I want to go back and reread all of Eshoni’s POVs together to see if they are all the same style. Has anyone does this? I’m thinking there is a different intentional rhythm to her writing. They were interspersed before and so I’m guessing I didn’t notice it. I loved the clues that were dropped in the Prologue too. 5 People meeting with Gavilar. Things like that. I felt that Chapter 1) Broken & Divided was familiar because it was a vision we had seen before and that the previous visions also had a distinct style that set the visions apart from Brandon’s normal Stomlight prose. I felt that after the vision ended, the writing was back to normal again. But I loved the surprise ending of the vision. Thanks to @hypatia for pointing out the sun/shin/shadow connections. You need some light to make shadows. The sun makes the shadows. You can't have the shadows without the sun. Reminds me of Ruin & Preservation I felt that Chapter 2) One Problem Solved was basically a recap of what we needed to be reminded. Just the facts with some humor thrown in. Necessary stuff -- that was likely trimmed as @frozndevl already said I was really impressed with Chapter 3) Momentum. This was my first time reading it and I adored the quality of writing and the allusion with the horse. Having just reread Szeth’s prologue, I was struck by the following lines. I just wish that brightlord Yezriar had responded to Dalinar with "That makes no sense!" But even now Dalinar is still going where his brother is pointing him . . . . . . The Blackthorn got his name from being shot with Black Arrows! @Musica had me cracking up So after finishing Chapter 3 I got a sick feeling in my stomach that I am not going to like the young Dalinar in this book. Brandon Sanderson has a son named Dallin, right? So he can't make Dalinar be too horrible. I mean he named one of them after the other -- right? Brandon Sanderson made sure we got to know Shallan before we found out that she was double murderer. That made her more understandable. What in Dalinar's past is going to come out in Oathbringer that will make us cringe? As evidenced the three posts, below, I'm not the only one who is concerned that the Dalinar I adore is seriously flawed. After reading the posts in this thread, I am now convinced that the Thrill -- or whatever is behind the thrill -- Nergaoul -- is the influence behind Dalinar's deplorable behavior that I am steadying myself to discover in Oathbringer. @Bcknight2 has almost convinced me that the eyes Dalinar sees at the end of his vision do not belong to a specific person but to Nergaoul and whoever is under his influence. The likelihood that Dalinar will know the person who ends up under the influence of the Thrill is very plausible. Now a few thoughts on Color & Numbers -- This kinda goes with the Shin worshiping the Sun theory mentioned above. @redbishop & @What's a Seawolf? I loved your posts. I want to do a reread of WoK & WoR and watch for numbers & colors. Has alyone already done this? I know in Jasnah's prologue there are 9 statues -- when there is supposed to be ten -- and I'm guessing there are many more references to support your theory. I have noticed colors before, -- especially in WarBreaker but now I feel the need to highlight all of them -- in their own colors -- in my copies so they are easy to identify! OK -- now here are a few posts I feel the need to respond to. I really like this theory that things are fading without the ability to recharge the Gemstones. Will the Everstorm recharge the gemstones and restore stormlight? Or will the Everstorm be made of a different kind of power that won't recharge them? Or recharge them with a different kind of light? A darker light? Once Kaladin gains back stormlight will his squires be able to draw from him -- no matter the distance? I completely agree with @Toaster Retribution I believe Amaram will pull an Amalickiah and marry Ialai and become a highprince, taking Sadeas's place. Sadea's death will be in vain, and Ialai will have more reason for animosity towards Dalinar and all the KR. I agree with @SLNC that Sadeas's death only creates more problems. But what will happen the the Oathbringer Sword that was thrown out the window? I haven't seen much speculation on that. I think Ialai will live. We still don't know why exactly Jasnah was plotting the murder of Elkohar's wife. For some reason I seem to think that the Queen and Ialai have a relationship, but I don't have any evidence now as to why I think that. I am also looking for people that Dalinar's wife would have know. Ialai would know things about Shhshshshsh that Dalinar would not remember now. I'm expecting this book to reveal more about her. Another great catch that I missed Great Observation. I'll watch for May. @dionysus I thought about "Oathbringer" being penned by a woman but possibly dictated by a man. If Oathbringer is a book or a journal, then it is likely written by a woman. If a man was writing it, many would indeed find it threatening. Perhaps a woman will bond with the Oathbringer sword next and this is her writings. Maybe Oathbringer previously belonged to a woman. (possible Shhshshshshsh). I'm really wanting to learn more about that woman. I also liked the theory someone posted about how Oathbringer could be written by a Kohlin ancestor. Its been fun to collect my thoughts and ramble @axcellence Was that enough paragraphs for you?

Really -- I love them all. My favorite seems to be the one I'm currently reading! Way of Kings was my first Sanderson book, and so that has a soft spot for me. After reading the rest of the cosmere and then going back to Way of Kings it was a completely different book. I loved how Words of Radiance built on WoK and I'm assuming that the rest of the Stormlight series will just enhance my admiration, appreciation, and awe for WoK as each new book is released. There is so much in WoK that is in plain sight, yet I don't see it. I'm enjoying the journey! WoK gets better with each new Stormlight Book. My second choice would be The Hero of Ages. I loved how that all tied together. Thanks for cookies tip! Wouldn't want anything bad to happen.

I posted this before on a different thread -- but one of the things I've been looking forward to in Oathbringer is to find out more about Dalinar's wife and his experience with the Nightwatcher. Wouldn't it be fascinating if the champion was his wife: Shhshshshshsh (or whatever her name is)? He would then be fighting a foe that he knew intimately and was familiar with but yet couldn't recall much of the history they had together. That would be interesting to see how that situation played out. There is so much to his wife that we don't know yet and I hope to find out if forgetting his wife was Dalinar's boon or his curse.

I believe that Lalai is going to play an important role after Sadeas death. I think that she was the mastermind behind Sadeas and she will find another man to take the lead. Although I did sense real affection / comradamy between Lalai & Sadeas. Meridas Amaram is still single, right? Replace one slimy husband with another?

The strata pattern brought to mind the Emperor's Soul and the prison that Shai was in that was made of "many different veins of rock". I agree that the strata pattern in the rock is significant -- but I don't understand its purpose yet. Thank you for the Tien & Szeth rock references. I wonder what type of rock Thunderclasts are made of. Is Urithiru made up of a type of rock that contains metals? Can this rock protect / resist Thunderclasts, forging, soul casting? Or is this the rock that Thunderclasts are formed from?

My first impression when I read was that he was looking into the eyes of his wife. Shhshshshsh The woman he can no longer remember. Perhaps the Old Magic is connected to this is some way.
