  1. I have the assumption that once burned Lerasium reforms in the geodes. (Which we know reform after being shattered, as they must have shattered in the past for anyone to know that using allomancy near them shatters them). There are questions as to where the atrium is when it is not reforming, or between forming and being burnt. This is a kinda important question, wrt Elands Gambit (as it were) A similar question is what happens to the lerasium of someone who has no children, and indeed if having children decreased the amount of lerasium in the parent. I assume that for balance Harmony needs there to be equal amounts of Lerasium and Attrium in the world. Existent Lerasium: * Spooks piece (still present in his decendents) * That in the various mistings that survived the fall. *(debatably) Hoid's Piece Existent Atrium: * Marshes spikes * Marshes nuggets * Atrium holdings of the various prefall houses (though marsh might have dug up and collected these?) * Other Spikes I think we are actually short on Lerasium, unless Spooks piece was huge Word of God disagrees though, as posted above.
  2. We know there are 10 ranks of dahn, (from the bit saying what would happen to Shallan's Arden friend if he quit the Ardents - he would be demoted to 10th dahn) the question is, are there 10 ranks of nahn (darkeyes)? with the magic number, it seems likely there are, but what do those bottom 5 ranks do? We have beggers, whores,Gravedigger? Also the question of: captain vs captainlord, vs companylord, still stands: is a captain the same a captainlord, but darkeyes? and: It would appear that a captain is faily low ranking, just one higher than a Sargent, and we know companylords act under battalionlords, but it is also implied that captain is the rank immediately bellow battalionlord, as
  3. Szeth mentions feeling a thrill (lower case t)
  4. I originally thought that, but then why does the glyph pair "sas moren" represent the district where he was branded. It could be that sas means slave, so "sas nahn" = "Slave Rank", and "sas moren" = "Slave of/from/by Moren" It could be. I don't think he actually was, under normal circumstances. Laral was pressuring Kaladin as a child to go off and win a Shard. Kaladin realised that that was so they they could marry. I agree that it is probably possible for low ranking lighteyes, to marry 2nd Nahn though. But very unusual, since 2nd nahn is master-servents it would be like marrying your butler's brother. (Heck higher ranking lighteyes could promote them then marry them) I like this suggestion, Kaladin sees a high ranking officer, "Must be 2nd/3rd dahn", not realising he is the son of a highprince, and thus 1st. After all Kaladin wouldn't even think of running into a the son of a highprince there. (he was in a market place in, this is where Adolin defends the whore, right?)
  5. You are correct Voldy: "After being dried, that grain would feed the entire town and their highprince’s armies. The ardents who passed through town were careful to explain that the Calling of a farmer was a noble one, one of the highest save for the Calling of a soldier. Kal’s father whispered under his breath that he saw far more honor in feeding the kingdom than he did in fighting and dying in useless wars." However the use of careful, to me suggests they were distorting the true because of the situation. ... Kal said. “It must. Otherwise, why would so many men go to war?” “Because,” Jest said, “we’ve gotta prepare men to fight for the Tranquiline Halls. We’ve gotta send soldiers to the Heralds. The ardents are always talking of it.” “In the same breaths that they tell us it’s all right to be a farmer too,” Khav said. “Like, farming’s some lonely second place or something.” “Hey,” Tift said. “My fah’s a farmer, and he’s right good at it. It’s a noble Calling! All your fahs are farmers.” --- "“Fighting is not the only thing of value a man can do.” The ardents were very specific about that. Yes, the highest Calling of men was to join the battle in the afterlife to reclaim the Tranquiline Halls, but the Almighty accepted the excellence of any man or woman, regardless of what they did." "The devotaries taught that when men died, the most valiant among them—the ones who fulfilled their Callings best—would rise to help reclaim heaven. Each man would do as he had done in life. Spearmen to fight, farmers to work spiritual farms, lighteyes to lead. The ardents were careful to point out that excellence in any Calling would bring power. A farmer would be able to wave his hand and create great fields of spiritual crops. A spearman would be a great warrior, able to cause thunder with his shield and lightning with his spear." To me it sounds like all callings are called the Second best calling, depending on who the ardent is speaking too

I'm currently putting a bit of work into a rough conversion for the crafty games Mistborn Adventure game. I'm sure a bunch of my stuff will be invalidated by the next book, but eh, making it keeps me entertained. There are some links to my stuff on this thread: http://www.crafty-games.com/forum/index.php?topic=6412.0
  7. Ahem, I've been putting some work into adding the missing mechanics for allow of law the mistborn RPG, see: http://www.crafty-games.com/forum/index.php?topic=6148 twinborn work, compounders mostly work (I haven't yet put in penelties for not tapping, still tossing up whether I should, cos tapping in the RPG turns an hour of storing into an instant of bonus. And even my compounders don't have that amount of storage. Compounder are also written unclearly) Koloss blooded is there but i don't like it and intend to replace it. Ran 2 playtests, seems to work alight. I don't have any explict Potent Combination rules, like you appear to for twinborn, I've just played it by ear. (had a player combine Storing weight, with pewter, for great jumping, apparently the rules already cover this.(cos pewter changes your physique))
  8. You're might be right, "“You insult my fah, you get a fight. That’s honor. You have honor, lordling?” “I’m no lordling,” Kal spat. “Stormfather, Jost, I’m only a few nahn higher than you are.”" I was thinking 5 because: *there is no mention of anyone lower than 5th. But there are so few mentions of nahn (notably, none in the epigraphs) * Everyone else was 4th or 5th. This holds some weight against the beggers an whores argument - it would mean the town had no beggers or whores. Then again, maybe kalidrin as a child didn't consider them in this statement. * They don't have full citizenship until 2nd nahn, seems unlikely that there would be 8 ranks of people with out full citzenship, Above slaves. * 5 seems reasonable as presumably the system was made by lighteyes, and "Why waste so many ranks on people who are so far beneath you. Once you know you out rank them, the exact magnitude is simply academic". On the other hand it could be the below 5th rank was mentioned because they are all so unimportant. still would have thought something would have come up relating to slaves. What rank are parshmen servants?
  9. Sadeas gets the Thrill, and he has no blade (only plate): “I killed many who did not deserve death,” Dalinar said. “A man should not fear losing his head because he took one too many sips of wine.” “Perhaps,” Sadeas said lightly. “But don’t you ever want to let it out, as you used to? Doesn’t it pound on you inside, like someone trapped within a large drum? Beating, banging, trying to claw free?” “Yes,” Dalinar said. The admission seemed to surprise Sadeas. “And the Thrill, Dalinar. Do you still feel the Thrill?” Men didn’t often speak of the Thrill, the joy and lust for battle. It was a private thing. “I feel each of the things you mention, Sadeas,” Dalinar said, eyes forward. “But I don’t always let them out. A man’s emotions are what define him, and control is the hallmark of true strength. To lack feeling is to be dead, but to act on every feeling is to be a child.” It is implied that Kaladin gets the thrill (though never stated with a capital T) I can't find the quote, but I believe the Thrill is a Alethi genetic trait. EDIT: found it: "He was losing his thirst for battle. That worried him, as the Thrill—the enjoyment and longing for war—was part of what drove the Alethi as a people"
  10. I've been trying to work out what it means to have a certain rank, I've done a particularly indepth search of the text, on the words nahn, dahn and lord. The goal here is determine what being of a particular rank means. Find out what that common occupations are done(not nesc. Callings, but actual jobs), how they live, etc. General Ranks are inherited. (When the army comes to recruit they promise an increase of 1 nahn, for "you and your children") If someone is of a particular rank, then so too are all there children and there partners. Darkeyes (Nahn) There are at least 5 ranks of Darkeyes, called nahn. The lowest rank refereed to is 5th I suspect that there is only 5 ranks, as 5th would seem to be pretty low. There is also Sas nahn, which is a slave. (though what sas means exactly I'm not sure, kaladrin has a slave brand with the glyph pair sas morom which is a district) At 2nd or 1st nahn has right of travel, and citzenship (not sure exactly what this entails). I guess below that is a more serf-like lifestyle. Master-Servants are of 2nd nahn, as is Lirin's family. the Kings master of the hunt is of 1st nahn. 1st nahn are able to marry into lighteye'ed family. Lighteyes (Dahn) There are 10 ranks of Lighteyes, called dahn. (We have confirmation that 10th is the lowest). I believe any of worse than 5th dahn have to work for a living. (We know at low enough rank some have to work for a living (they become soldiers), the exact rank isn't mentioned) 10th is stated to be only a little better than a darkeyes. Titles/Positions I believe the title Brightlord, is applied to any light eyes of 4th dahn or higher. A female is called "Brightness <name here>" and is a Brightlady It might be lower, I think we could establish a lower bound if we can find the rank of Matal or Lamaril Highprince is a thing, I believe they are all 1st dahn. Citylord appears to be any lord who controls a village or larger. I believe they are mostly 3rd and 4th dahn. house lord, is refereed to once: "...The landlords and house lords who played politics in court..." Not sure exactly what a house lord is Landlord is referred to quiet often, I believe it is the step below citylord. (I believe it has a slightly different meaning from its normal english use, and mean a lighteyes who a large area of land outside a city) Highlord is referred to 4 times. I believe they are all exactly 2nd dahn. Amaram is referred to twice as a Highlord (the rest of the time he is called Highmarshal, or Brightlord) They control a district, a large region in a princedom, I guess. Kaladrin is branded with a glyph pair indicating which highlord's district he become a slave in I don't know how citylords are decided within that region though since: Quote Lirin: "I still don’t know which highlord was behind sending him here to torment us" the term warlord is also used a couple of times, but never referring to any specific person, so i think it just means a leader involved in war. Military Ranks I don' think these are directly tied to particular nahn/dahn, but there is a correlation. I would like to line them up. Highmarshal - the leader of a large miliary force. "Bightlord Amaram is absendiar highmarshal of our princedom. He is in command of defending our borders while the king and Brightlord Sadeas are away." (I suggest 1st dahn, or delegated to 2nd dahn) Infantrylord, Calverylord - Dalinar has these, I don't know about other princes. In charge of all forces of this type. (I suggest 2nd dahn) Battalionlord - In charge of 1000 man, has many companylords underneath them(I'm confidant this is limited to >=4th dahn) Companylord - acts under a battalionlord CaptainLord - these exists in Sadeas's forces. Kaladin when under Amaram says he must report to one, so I guess these guys are 1 step above Sergeant. Captain - at the end of the book Kaladrin is promoted to Captain. It is implied to be the highest rank that is less than Battalionlord. (but then how does this compare to a CompanyLord?) What is the difference between a Captain and a CaptainLord? My theory is if they are of miliary rank X, and a lighteyes, they are refereed to as a X-lord. Matal is confirmed as being the new captain, when Lamaril is removed. This may be short for captain lord Sergeant - Gaz was a Sergeant(and a darkeyes) Squadleader - leads one of many squads under one Sergeant. (I believe the bridge leaders are roughly equal in rank, though not in status) --- So here is all my collected information. You can see I've made allot of guesses (most of them are clearly marked). I can provide arguments for all statements, I think, challenge me if you think I've made a mistake (or if I can't backup a statement) I would love some criticisms, and suggestions. I've left allot of open questions in there. It would be nice to tidy this up and put it on the Coppermind
  11. Really? in my part of the world the word Queer has been totally reclaimed. it's used as an umbrella term for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual, transgender, intersex, ... (Most people I know, myself included are a bit queer). The group on Campus offering support and looking out for rights, is called the "Queer Department", and it's not like they had the name imposed on them, they've changed the second word a couple of times. (I'm in Western Australia) --- On topic, I actually had a vague theory that Brandon would leave anything Queer out of the universe. (there is very little romance in the books, mostly we have people missing dead partners. (these to me are more important story points than the living romances)). Since Brandon is (to my understanding) a fairly involved member of the Church of Latter-day Saints, it would be the easy way to avoid causing controversy in his community. Since wether or not he has strong veiws about homosexuality (etc), some people he would be involved with, probably would and, would also read his books. I guess the argument for having straight relationships, in books where those relationships are not a focal point is that then readers don't really have to thing so much about them. They get the whole idea of the deal by pretty quick, and can move on to the actual plot (vs the characterisation)
  12. Thanks, just got round to using them For anyone who is interested here is how the RPG assigns the symbols on the character sheet. I beleive they are basically just there for decoration, but there is at least some meaning going on: Atium - Action Dice Lerasium - Defense dice Brass - Advancements Bronze - Secrets known Cadmium - Standing Cerobend - Traits and burdens Copper - Powers Gold - Equiptment Iron - Attributes Pewter - Resilience Steel - Destiny Zinc - Tragedy
  13. I would assume that when you pure it you can tap out all the other memories and store them, in other mineds. Miles wasn't getting health from the metal he burnt, he was getting health from the charges he tapped from his other metalminds. He was burning to recharge those minds. I would say they transfering is something you can do. Addmittedly every memory transfered would have some wear and tear asw it passed briefly though your mind. (or maytbe not, if you can transfer directly. Compare Nicrosil)
  14. The whole thing about compounding is that it is (like Allomancy) net possitive. Compounding lets you "burn" feurcamical charges, to release the effect of having tapped 10x that which was burned. (Which can then be re-stored in metal minds). So a Gold compounder can go heal at half rate for 1 hour, and then using compounding have access to 5 hours (10*0.5) of extra healing. (More so, by just compounding, and re-storing they can avoid ever having to store after the first time). Compounding lets you get more out than you put in. What happens when you Compound copper? Assumably you remember more than you stored. Some possibilities: * Get the same memory multiple times or really vividly. (I guess this might be able to be used to avoid degregation of memories.) * Remember more than they saw the first time. So if they memorises a painting, upon recalling that memory they might notice a detail they missed, eg that one of figures in the paint was actually a woman, not a man as most thought. * Remember things they didn't see: - Remember what happened behind you - After burning a memory of a room, with a chest of draws in it (that you never opened), being able to walk around that room in your memory and open the draws. * Remember things that were outside of your concious perception. I'm thinking like in Way of Kings, Shalan has a Memory ability where she can take a snapshot of a scene in her head, and then redraw it later (it seems very similar to copperminds). Later in the books when she redraws the scene it has these spooky figures (Truthspren) in it that she didn't ever see there when she took the memory. *Remember memories that you didn't store. - Your own memories, but with Coppermind clarity - The memories of Copper Ferricamists, that died untapped, (or who's metalminds were destroyed)
  15. It was Tekiel, and they were destroyed beyond all relervance, already. (Sad, I liked them). I doubt they has a monopoly on aliminium
  16. is Rimistis confirmed as not a Shardworld?
  17. Where did you hear this?I'ld really like to see more books set in the (what i will call) Western time period. As for unanswered questions I see 2: The Mistborn Adventures Catagory means nothing to me w.r.t likelyhood of a series. Infact I would say it is opposed to it. Since "X adventures" is a way of saying "This is a stand alone novel set in the universe of X", much like saying "A mistborn novel" vs saying "Mistborn Book 17"
  18. I'm torn. I think it might actually be something that superceded the Ideals, or that is unrelated; like "I love you".
  19. I'm glad to hear the counter arguements. I knew I was wrong but didn't know how
  20. Is it just me, or are Preservation and Ruin misnamed? Stasis and Change seems to fit better to me, though not perfect still. I'm sure I've missed something so I want to hear other opinions. Preservation seems strongly biased towards humanity continuing. I've always thought this was the infulence of the Shardholder, directing the Shard's intent. Other possible options: Structure and Entropy (Preservation wants to build up complexity and order, Ruin wants to reduce it all to dust) Law and Chaos (the traditional duo, I don't like this one.) Increase and Reduction (this would imply Allomancy is of Increase, Haemurgy of Reduction, and Feurchemy of both (or better yet neither)
  21. That was what I was waiting to hear. Thanks.
  22. Inkscape is completely legit. (I guess there is the possiblity someone has created a fake version, with a Fake site) I wouldn't sa they look fantastic. They look alright.
  23. Yes, Take Atium as an example. Atium doesn't kill people or destroy things. It is much better at keeping people alive than killing them. Don't get me wrong, on a scale of 0-10 where 10 is best possible human ability to kill someone, Atium scores 30. (And pewter 15) on a scale 0-10 of keeping people alive, Atium scores 50. (and electium 30, pewter 15). Maybe i'm exaggerating a little. But Atium really just isn't that great for destuction, compaired to what it could be if Ruin wasoptimsing for short term effectiveness. (Eg, if could allow you to kill with a glance) But instead Ruin opimises for the long term. Make the killer good yes, but keep him alive to kill more later
  24. My take is that Sliverism is the worship of the "Sliver of Infinity", ie the lord rules. It wasone of the religions Sazed studied in the old world, so would have come across in the books. I also beielve that people have got confused (In character), as to the difference between: The Lord Ruler, IronEyes (Marsh),and all Steel Inquisitors. Whic is why some people sys Silverism is the worship of IronEyes. I would also spculate that around 50 years after the battle of Scandeil, a large number (50-300) of Silverists would have left the Elandrel Basin, heading overseas, or perhaps into the Southern Roughs. To Set up a society, as they thought it was before. With Skaa, Obligators, nobles, but a absent (but "real") Sliver of Infinity watching over them. Some might say that no one would agree to be a Skaa, but not having to ever make descions is attractive to some.
  25. All depends on technique. Running them through SVG tracing makes the sharp, but i'm yet to find a nice balance doing the trace that"Over stylise" them. if I don't smooth cornered the come out with the circle arcs being polygons i'm loosing my sharp corners, and this makes the spikes look bad. I'm also loosing perfect circles but I think that could be solved by preproccessing the bitmap images to make there be less specling around the circles, this might also solve my arc problem A sample: SVG on top, Raster original on bottom. at high zoom.
