Poem 22
Conflagration of the Divine
Fires engulf the realm as though the gods have decided to spill out their wrath upon humanity for some unknown transgression. Monstrous beasts take form and charge about the land delivering all into the embrace of most unwilling Thanatos and Plutus. The cities of humanity smoke and shriek in agony. Prayers ascend on high to deities that are worshipped by virtue of their existence alone though some answer the call. Diana in her chariot of silver fires volley after volley that angers the monsters that are slaughtering all of the inhabitants of the mortal world. Phoebus and Mercury engage the enemy and receive burns that sear their immortal souls. Ceres sends legions of vines that are immolated beneath the feet of the growing legions. Fortuna herself stands in doubt wondering if this day her scales will be crushed into powder and the whole of existence will come to an end. Laments and dirges pierce the air and are specters that haunt even the minds of the ineffective primordials. Divided sovereigns enable the very earth to be transformed into a den of death.
All hopes are gone those who fight are prepared to retire and leave the whole of mortal flesh to its fate. The huntress turns her eyes toward a star in the heavens that is glowing ever brighter than even she can believe. It races from the heights and all the while sings in a way that no divine being can understand. There is something so simple and beautiful about the wordless tune that she brings with her. Hissing and roaring come from the armies that now stop and stare as everywhere at once these notes and light spears their infernal flames. Blood pours from their wounds and for the first time they feel fear as they fall. Even the mightiest and most fearsome begin to flee to anywhere that these sounds cannot inflict pain upon them. Dancing mistress your voice smites them where they run. Your tread completely erases all signs of the carnage that seemed so unstoppable and eternal in its power. With ease, you extinguish that which Vulcan could not master and bring illumination where before there was only darkness. Once all is healed you do not flee, but take your place as one for whom eternal worship is deserved.
