Is Eshonai's cometlike spren a form of Radiantism or is it, I'm thinking, the spren that lives in her native gemheart, acting as her soul? The Listeners are kind of crustacean-y and probably count as megafauna? (Do chulls have gemhearts?) When Goatee-Eshonai atunes peace, she hears _herself_ screaming from the spren: It almost seems as if that spren is her soul, distinct from shape-changing spren they bring into themselves during highstorms. I would lean more towards radiant-like-spren if it weren't screaming in Eshonai's "own voice"...

Karaites? Jews for Jesus? Samaratinism? Rastafarianism? Nazaritism?

Please, not even teasing!

I'll be very amused if "Oathbringer"'s name is relevant and tied to the Oathpact. I'll be doubly amused if it turns out to have been an honorblade all along. (Do honorblades look different from shardblades?)

From Ad Astra reading

I was surprised to see such distinct soulcasting side effects. Am I right in assuming each kind of soulcasting has its own degenerate form? And if so, what happens to the people who convert stone into food? Do they become living bagels? What exactly is going on here? Are the people using the soulcasters mining part of themselves to produce the soulcasting? Honestly, the visuals from the Oathbringer reading gave me chills. This is a seriously fascinating but messed up magic system. I wonder how much this looks like Nightblood's little exhaust problem...

Thank you so much!

That's the topic for me too. Count me as a member of the Amen Chorus (or Aimian Chorus) on this one.

I know of several excerpts that have been released on Tor or read at signings. Is there a proper place to discuss these? Thanks.

I'm hoping Sanderson can steer through the turbulent waters of tropesville and allow Kaladin and Shallan to act as colleagues, friends, and what-ifs, without disrupting Shallan's marriage to Adolin.

Shallan daydreams the interludes?
iamstick replied to windrunningmistborn's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thaylen are eyebrow dwarves, who are famous traders. Shin are the pasty balding farmers who worship stone, enslave warriors, and secretly collect honor blades and shard blades. Easy mistake. The only Shin who's gotten traded on-screen (so to speak) is Szeth, and it was Rysn's master Vstim who did the deal. Rysn's T-Shirt reads: "I silkroaded all the way to Shin and all I got was this stupid potted grass" -
Shallan daydreams the interludes?
iamstick replied to windrunningmistborn's topic in Stormlight Archive
Okay, someone quick do some math. If Windrunner surges are 100% physical realm and Lightweavers are 100% cognitive, does Spiritual play any part in the breakdown, and how does this manifest on the big old surge/order chart? -
Odium + Dominion?

Shallan daydreams the interludes?
iamstick replied to windrunningmistborn's topic in Stormlight Archive
It's the only reason I can think of that Elhokar might be seeing spren in the mirror. (Yes, he's broken enough, but I don't see him as either an Elsecaller or a Lightweaver.) -
A favorite of mine. As is the "I'm courting your mother" scene. Dalinar understands how to make his point...forcefully. I'm also exceedingly fond of the entire storm attack scene, both with Szeth realizing what Kaladin is and Adolin musing about it afterwards.

Shallan daydreams the interludes?

<tinfoil> I think Shallan has a sensory connection to the cognitive realm, allowing her to "see" spren that are not bonded to her (the cryptids watching Taravangian) and events happening outside her immediate vicinity. She can capture the local conditions (by blinking, including sprensight) for later recall. She may be accessing cognitive "farsight" when she allows herself to draw freely without deliberate intent. She can also mold a kind of cognitive reality (like her "strong" version and Veil) and pull it into the physical realm as well. I suspect if she really trained at it, she'd be great at eavesdropping not just seeing, and be able to create all sorts of sensory impressions beyond hearing and sight. </tinfoil> -
theory The secret that broke the Knights Radiant
iamstick replied to CaptainRyan's topic in Stormlight Archive
I remain confused about the recreance. What exactly are the mechanisms of Odium hopping over from Braize to Roshar and back? Could it really be as simple as "there exists one parshendi (or parshendi derived) person who has bonded with a voidspren?" Or is it that "there are zero heralds on Braize" allowing the crustacean version of Bifröst to extend? Would killing all the heralds end the desolations? If so, are the Knights Radiant sufficiently heraldic that they enter the mathematics of Odium gate logic? Could the recreance (minus Skybreakers) have deliberately mirrored the "all heralds but poor Taln" and been necessary to trap Odium? 1 order on Roshar + 1 herald on Braize == sufficient to maintain oathpact? Is the whole new desolation the fault of the spren, particularly of Pattern (who seems to be the earliest "success")?- 34 replies

That was my impression as well, that Odium and/or his splinters (the number that isn't the same number as the KR) plus, presumably, the last herald, had to commute from Braize to Roshar so they could get on desolating... It might just be Odium though as the thrill and death rattles seem to have been around for a bit but the bridge didn't seem to get crossed until Eshonai listened to her sister (something no one should ever do under any circumstances).

Going by the "Fun (but probably wrong)" principles of the thread: it allows the gemheart to be removed not by force but by natural decay, preserving the honor and "spirit" of the deceased. handwave handwave handwave

I think the small gems in the beards and the reverence for the dead are good indicators that they may in fact have gemhearts. Navani writes about capturing spren in gems for fabrials. Eshonai transforms using spren. I don't think it's a huge leap to suggest that all native (carapaced) life has or can make a gemheart as part of their physiology, just like most molluscs can make pearls. If so, their gemheart might be why they have a much stronger connection to spren, and why interbreeding (Cultivation!) would bring traits to the Horneaters allowing some or all of them (like Rock) to see spren, and explain why radiants leak light but chasmfiends don't. Also, I'm now shipping The Lopen and a large female Chasmfiend.

I'm surprised that everyone is focused on the horn eating rather than the red hair, which obviously is the true indicator of pure evil. And boot stealing. But to get back to my earlier question, does possession of an internal gemheart make it possible to see spren? If so, would Eshonai have one? Would Rock? Could the Lopen? Shallan?

That failed this time. Mine is being extremely irritating. -
Teeth and tummies that can grind and digest carapace (aka "horn") plus red hair.
