The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well, with the proper thought processes and training, you could in fact convert raw processing speed into complex computations. You'd just have to have a rigid, logic based pros and cons approach to everything. So I think that if someone with above average intelligence, the proper mental processes, maybe an extremely efficient note-taking method, and the ability to compound zinc might be able to recreate some of what Taravangian did, if not quite to that extent. However, the previously mentioned abilities would be very good at deciphering hid diagram and turning it into a legible and understandable medium. Intellect that is high enough to grasp bits and pieces, the methodology required to break it down piece by piece, and the proper note-taking processes to make it last. With that, it would just take you a couple years (or decades) to piece it together. Zinc compounding would then allow you to squish that "couple years" into a couple weeks, or maybe months. -
Just wanted to add an idea to the discussion: In SA, you also have people accessing stuff they shouldn't have right before dying: the death rattles.

The anything is possible lime almost sounds like a RAFO that doesn't even deserve a RAFO. More of a, "Yes, I could do it, but I'm not messing with the whole time travel timelines thing so, no, I'm not doing it."

17th shard How does worldhopping work?
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Nohadon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The use of fabrials could help this calculation process if you wanted to make this a regular thing. But I agree, this would be insanely hard. At the same time, Seons seem to have a really easy time with knowing where things are. They might be a help. -
Bondsmith error
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Brightlord M. Alhstrom's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
@thegatorgirl00 & @jofwu Thanks for the edits. Already looks much much better. And you are right. There isn't much point throwing in too much speculation when most of it is going to get confirmed/rejected in a canon soon through OB. -
Well, if the Iriali aren't splinters, but heavily invested humans, then how is this shard supposed to rebuild himself from them? How many millions of Iriali would it take for a shard to have completely invested itself? The passage makes it sound like the process of the One returning is one where they become a part of it, and are no longer individual. That sounds a lot like splinters. As for the intent, here is my theory: The father-shard designed the Iriali, knowing what he was doing (or maybe in ignorance of how much the intent can override the mind). He created them such that they would be able to interact and hide as humans. He also either made their personalities extremely close to his intent, or made them resistant to the corrupting influence of the shard's intent. Or maybe the intent was similar to their purpose (travel and experience, then come back and reunite). Then the shard slowly splintered itself, forming Iriali after Iriali, each one a splinter of himself, until he was completely, or nearly completely, splintered into the Iriali. The reason why he made splinters instead of investing into humans is that he couldn't get their experiences any other way. With humans, he can invest in them, but divesting wouldn't give him their memories. However, shards coming together and reforming would merge their minds, and thus their memories, allowing the final result to have all of their memories.

I'd already discussed a couple dual names in other threads, so it was nice to have one where all the name ideas could be brought together.
-
I was building on your original theory, and saying that it might be possible to identify the shardic intent of the origin shard by look at the personalities of the Iriali, if the concept of a shard's intent overriding the mind of a shardholder applies to splinters as well (which seons and skaze seem to imply)

17th shard How does worldhopping work?
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Nohadon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'd just like to mention that theoretically it would be possible for an Elantrian to worldhop directly from Elantris to another shardworld if he knew the exact vector and used Aon Tia. It would, however, be a one way trip, and might not succeed, as we are not sure what the limitations of Aon Tia are. And I'm fairly sure that Elantrians can bring other people along when using Aon Tia. -
Well, their lore talks of the One breaking apart into the Iriali so that it could have experience, then once they reached the 7th land they would somehow merge together to reform the one? That sounds a lot like A shard splintered itself intentionally, forming the splinters as it did so into Humanoids, and programming them to want to reform into the shard once a certain amount of traveling has happened. I'm guessing the shardholder that did so was similar to Odium in that it didn't realize how much the Shard's Intent can override someone, and thus either didn't anticipate the shard's intent overriding their programming, or maybe just took a calculated risk when splintering. This makes me think that this shard might be something to the extent of seeking knowledge or something like that. Maybe Curiosity? I could see a shard like that intentionally splintering itself in a way that it would remember how it felt, just to have the experience of "dying".
-
In this thread they discuss various dual shard name ideas. I really like the idea of Corruption. Spreading Hate wherever you can. Torment sounds more like Endowment and Odium. And a lot of shards could lead to War. Like Dominion and Odium, or Dominion and Ambition. I'm really liking the idea that there have been 9 desolations in the past, and that this one will be the 10th. This goes really well with how 9 of the Heralds left, how there are expected to be 9 Unmade, and how 10 is a very important number to Roshar (10 external planets, 10 orders, 10 surgebinding types, etc).

Odium free at the end of Stormlight
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to red032's topic in Stormlight Archive
There is a WoB somewhere about how someone who really knew what he was doing could use Lerasium to connect to any magic system. As well as the fact that the Lerasium alloys allow you to pick and choose what powers you want. So it is possible that the reason he has Allomancy is that he took part of the Lerasium and created alloys, making him a very powerful misting in a couple different metals, then kept the rest to do other stuff with. Or he could have swallowed the whole thing and become Mistborn. This could also explain the final scene of Elantris, where Hoid talks of failing to become an Elantrian. It is possible that he tried using Lerasium to make himself an elantrian. I doubt that he has the knowledge required to use Lerasium in this way, but if anyone did, it would be Hoid.- 75 replies

Well, implies Odium doesn't mean it was Odium. It could be that Odium mortally wounded Ambition in the Threnodite System, then Ambition fled. It wouldn't be the first time a Shard had a certain amount of time between when it was inevitably going to die and when it's mind gave out (yes, I'm thinking of Preservation). So, Ambition escapes the Threnotide system and hides on another planet, splintering himself intentionally into the Iriali. Odium comes looking, and eventually gives up, determining that Ambition was already mortally wounded and must have founds some hole somewhere to die. And he can't spend too much time looking into any system for fear of investing into it. Now, I personally don't think that's the case, and think that the Iriali are from a different shard, but I still think it's possible. But for me the main point against Ambition is the Intent of the Iriali themselves. I'm thinking of how a Shard's intent will slowly override the will of the shardholder, with the process slowed down the more the shardholder's mind was already compatible with the Shard's intent. I think that the same would apply to a Splinter. After all, Seons show extreme dedication, Skaze seem somewhat evil (mostly going off of Brandon's description as "Evil Seons"), and most spren have a personality that would go in the same direction as their origin shard. So, the concept is that the Iriali were created with this concept of the Long Trail at the core of who they are, so they go from world 1 to world 4. However, they slow down, in part because the Shard's intent is starting to override this concept of finding the 7th land. So, Iriali who's personalities were already quite compatible with the Shard's intent retained the desire to keep going along the Long Trail, while other's lost it, which is why the have been on Roshar so long, and don't really show that many signs of leaving any time soon. This would explain the line "More people did know this, once. It's not talked about as much as it should be...". So, if I'm right, then it would mean that we should be able to guess at what shard created them by looking at the Iriali's personalities. Essentially, if we can identify what the "stereotypical" Iriali would look like, then we might have a clue as to what shard created them. And no offense, but I don't see ambition being their father-shard. I'd expect a collection of Ambition-splinters to be a very industrious, and somewhat warlike people, constantly expanding. Now, I don't remember much of the Iriali. When I read the SA books, I wasn't aware of the Cosmere, and they were lost with the descriptions of all the other people of Roshar. I mean, there are a lot or different cultures in these books. So if anyone can analyse the Iriali stereotypes, it can't really be me.

That could be scary. i just pictured a Cultivation+Odium dual shard. What would that be? Something to the extent of Inflaming conflict and hate among others?

Just rereading the Bondsmith page, and I noticed an error. Essentially, something that is pretty much just a theory is being stated as a fact. From the Coppermind: From WoB: This strongly implies three members, but the line "which number was not uncommon for them; nor did they seek to increase this by great bounds" makes it seem like the "members only three" refers to a specific set of Bondsmith, and that the number three was common, but that it would be possible for it to be a little higher, maybe reaching as high as 5. This is up for discussion, and there are theories on the subject. As for a single spren that they share, it is speculation based on the usage of the singular word "was" in "Their spren was understood to be specific". Though the use of the singular "was" could also mean that there is one type of spren, (not just one spren) as with the other orders. It's very plausible that Bondsmith share a spren, but not canon yet. Essentially, some of this info needs to be clarified and broadened, and other parts need to be in the Theories and Speculation section.

That's essentially what I meant when I said "one of those stack exchange style thread"

@The One Who Connects Sorry. When I said I don't see time travel happening in the Cosmere, I meant the Dr. Who "Go back and fix the past" kind. And when we talk of time travel in Alloy of Law, I think he is talking about the two external temporal metals (Cadmium/Bendalloy).
-
Honestly, I don't really hold much to the SR thing anyways. My point was that Teleportation is different from FTL travel since it just pops you there, you aren't going through the space in between. And I think that is why there aren't any time travel things going on. I don't see timetravel coming into the Cosmere tbh.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
15. Can an Elantrian use Aon Tia to go as far as he wants? Like to another planet for example? (If this is a yes, then I have a theory about how Galladon got off Sel.) 16. Can an elantrian create a portal through Aon Tia that would allow non-Elantrians to travel? 16.1 (If yes to 16) Can you make a permanent version of the portal? Kinda like the Aon Ashe metal plates? 16.2 (If yes to 16.1) Would such a portal allow two way transportation? (Essentially, what I'm picturing is WoT style travelling, with the stipulation that the portals can only be opened from Elantris. This would make it possible for Elantris to become a hub used to travel from city to city or world to world within the Cosmere.) 16.3 (If no to 16.) Is it possible for an Elantrian to bring others with him as he uses Aon Tia? -
Considering how the Oathgates, Aon Tia and Dakhor teleport their subjects without concern for time, matter, etc, I think that they do in fact pass through the Spiritual realm. And I doubt you'd need that complex of tech to create more permanent portals. In fact, I suspect that AonDor would be able to do it without too much hastle, even if you'd have to have Elantris on one end of every single portal. That could be cool: Elantrians start making permanent portals from Elantris to specific key locations elsewhere in the Cosmere, and thus becoming a hub for FTL travel. This is of course assuming that Aon Tia has enough range to go from planet to planet, and that such a portal would work both ways.

I suspect that part of what killed the Spren was when the KRs all dropped their Shardblades and severed the connections. So since the Stormfather wasn't in shardblade-form, it didn't have as much of an effect on him. That goes well with the fact that Shardblades are corpses of bonded spren (at least, I think thats been confirmed in the book) and the fact that the Stormfather refuses to be summoned as a Shardblade. Edit: Essentially I'm saying that the reason the Stormfather refuses to be summoned as a shardblade is because he knows that a spren is vulnerable when in that form. Thus when the other spren were summoned as blades then had their bonds severed, they died and stayed as spren. The Stormfather also had his bond(s) severed, which hurt him, but since he wasn't a shardblade, he survived.
-
As cool as the Sprenmoticons are, it might be nice to have some for the bonding spren, and/or different coloured spren. I always pictured angerspren as being red, windspren as being blue, and gloryspren as being golden. I'd keep going, but I think you get the idea.
-
Hey guys!!! Kinda recent to the forum, and I really like this idea, even if it has kinda died. So, I have an alternate idea for espousing theories: People post theories normally, and have discussion on them. Once the people in the discussion start to come to a general consensus, the author (or one of the most active debaters on the conversation) would then write a summary of the theory, which would be placed in the main post, along with the original post. Then there would be one of those stack exchange style thread where authors put well polished Theories that are ready to be espoused. Any major revisions to a theory would be posted there, as well as if a theory becomes cannon. Then if someone wants to espouse a theory, they post the link to the original post in their signature, and upvote the post in the hub thread. This would make it easier to keep track of how many people are espousing which theories.

Hacking AonDor Magic
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to ILuvHats's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
There were definitely some Aons that were lost during the Reod, but seeing as there are probably a few pre-Reod Elantrians that stayed as Hoed the entire time and were restored, I feel like they would restore the Aons they knew. Plus you have the Library. I feel like Aons would be written about there, so with a bit of research, you'd get them all back. However, with the nature of Aons, I feel like research is a part of it. Kinda like how you had people trying to find new metals in Era 1 mistborn, to find more optimal Alloys. Or the Listeners trying to bond different Spren to discover more Forms. I feel like you had Elantrian researchers who dedicated their life to the study of Aons to discover different ways you could use Aon Dor. It would explain why you had so many books on Geography, as well as AonDor theory. Plus, it sounds like similar research was going on with the Dakhor monks, which is why Dilaf was the only monk with the anti-Aon ability. It was still a recent discovery and hadn't been all that widespread. -
Yes. But where did you guys learn this?????????? I mean, would you please give me a source?
