  1. I got a map of Roshar! It shall hang in a special place above my bed.
  2. On page 504 of the paperback version of WoR, Kaladin accuses Shallan of not being Adolin's betrothed because "Adolin's betrothed has drowned." But how could he know this, since they didn't know that the ship had gone down until Shallan told Dalinar and Navani? On page 492, Navani didn't seem to have any knowledge of the ship sinking, just assumed Jasnah had gone off somewhere else, so Kaladin couldn't have known Jasnah's ward drowned. My dad was reading WoR and brought this point up, so I just thought I'd share to see if this had been answered, or if we're missing something.
  3. @Ookla the Apostate Yeah, as much as I love the concept of time-travel, when I really start to think about it, it makes my head hurt Right now I'm leaning toward a system where, when someone goes back, time itself resets to whatever time they went back and the future doesn't exist, leaving them a blank slate to make new choices. For the glass, I think it can be any kind. You can sort of store time in pieces of glass called disks, and the amount of time you have stored equals how long you can go back in the past. Hourglass--nice
  4. This has been me all day.
  5. I've been thinking of doing a story where the magic system is time travel, so a race of people have the ability to go back in time (but not forward) and change things. And how far they can go back depends on how much Time they can buy with these coins made from glass. The ability is linked to glass somehow, so if one of these people walk through a mirror or a window they can enter this dimension (for lack of a better word) to communicate with Time itself, and if they have enough glass objects on them, they can literally buy themselves Time to return to the past. I'm trying to think of a way for this time-traveling to work though, and I have two ideas. One is that when you go back to the past, everything resets and you become your past self except for the knowledge you have of the future. The second is that you go back but you exist on a separate "plane of time" so-to-speak. You can interact with your past self, there's a chance people will see two versions of you, etc. Is there one type of travel that's used more commonly than the other? Or easier to do? I like the idea of a character who keeps running into their future self, so I think there's more chance for conflict with the second one. But I feel there would be less paradoxes with the first. Or if there's a method of time-travel I didn't mention, I'd love to hear about it!
  6. Wow, that is horrible. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. At least you did get revenge eventually. I'm usually not an advocate of revenge but it sounds like it was warranted in that case. That's just insane. I'm sorry you're not having a good first day. Do you have a chance to be paired up with someone better later? Hopefully things will improve if you hang in there for a bit longer.
  7. When this conversation happens: Dad: "Your evil minion is following you." Me: *Looks over shoulder and sees my cat* "Oh, that's just my spren. We've bonded." Dad: "Really? It's a weird-looking spren. What kind is it?" Me: *Studies cat intensely. Cat flops onto his back and stretches* "I'm not sure. It hasn't given me any Stormlight powers." Dad: "Oh, it must be a Voidspren. I saw its eyes glowing red once."
  8. I should have, but at the time I just wanted the confrontation to be over with as soon as possible. And the storm was very localized...driving a few hundred feet or so down my usual route would have brought me out of it, I think, so I was just on the fringe of it. Next time I'll probably call my workplace and see what the weather's like there before I decide.
  9. Thanks, I needed that reminder. My boss told me that there hadn't been any snow squall warnings--but they were there for me, 20 minutes away from that area. And cars in the ditch on the local news. At least I know what their position on all this is, anyway.
  10. I had to miss work because of bad, white-out level snow yesterday, which was apparently only a local storm right in my area. The town where I work was clear. I texted my boss, who ended up covering my shift themselves . The snowstorm over us lasted most of my usual shift and I thought everything was fine...but come tomorrow morning, I guess it wasn't. My boss talked to me while I was on lunch break and said since I was the only adult staff on the closing shift (there's also a student who works with me) I should have tried harder to come in and given more notice. They said they didn't want to get HR involved (!?) because they knew I'd understand...basically, they said that since I was no longer a student staff member but an adult one I should be more responsible and make every effort to get into work. It could become an attendance issue if it happened again. But the thing is, the snow was bad in my area, and there'd been accidents on the road I usually take to get into work. I just didn't feel safe about going, but now I feel like I really messed up and it's my fault and I should have tried harder. I feel like a kid pretending to be an adult. All my co-workers seem so competent while I get sat down and reminded I have to be responsible. My boss even implied (but this might just be my mind twisting things) that if my position wasn't working out that I could go back to my old student position. They might have been joking though. I don't know. I feel so down on myself, like I can never make the right call about anything and everyone else always knows what they're doing. Sorry for the long, ranting post...I had to get it all out somewhere. On the bright side, I just told my family this and they entertained me with stories about getting reprimanded by their bosses. So I do feel a bit better now.
  11. When you read A Christmas Carol and imagine the Christmas Past ghost as an honorspren, the Christmas Present ghost as Rock, and the Christmas Future ghost as an Unmade.
  12. I just realized that I can't really remember the plot of any Wax and Wayne books either, despite having read them twice. If you asked me for a summary for any of the books, I wouldn't be able to do more than give a very vague overview. Apparently my brain has a thing for remembering absolutely nothing about fictional secret societies/organizations. Maybe it's a self-preservation mechanism?
  13. I forgot about the existence of the Ghostbloods until my second re-read of WoR. Even now I have trouble remembering them. Everything else about the Stormlight Archives I can bring to mind easily, except any storylines with the Ghostbloods...
  14. In WoR didn't Adolin lose his mother's chain before one of his fights? That's the only chain I remember...
  15. When you notice bruises on your leg and realize they've formed from propping Oathbringer on it for hours.
  16. I really like Lyn. Does anyone remember that she was a character Brandon made for a fan who wanted to fight alongside Kaladin Stormblessed? (Not sure where the original post went). She appeared at the end of WoR but is getting an even bigger part here. I'm so happy for whoever Lyn was based off of, they must be ecstatic.
  17. I used to think it would be a cool twist if Kaladin went back to Hearthstone and found out his parents had had another kid. I never thought Brandon would actually do it though. But he did it. It was my secret idea for years I can't believe it actually happened.
  18. When you try to inconspicously read Oathbringer at a family reunion. Unfortunately, there is nothing inconspicuous about Oathbringer or my reactions while reading it.
  19. You know you're a Sanderfan when you see a book called The Blackthorn Key by an author with the last name of Sands, and immediately get suspicious.
  20. Found out my local bookstore has ten copies...so I'll be getting mine this morning. So excited!!!
  21. Szeth: Stormlight Archives:
  22. True. Either way, I'm excited to see if it turns out. If it does end up being cosmere anyway then that's icing on the cake.
  23. It's cosmere!? Yesssss....
  24. When this conversation happens: Friend: "So, any plans for this weekend?" Me: "Yes. I'll be attempting to read a 400,000 word book in three days to prepare for its 450,000 word sequel." Friend: *blank stare*
  25. You know you're a Sanderfan when you've been saving a bookstore gift card for over a year, awaiting the magical day when you can finally use it for Oathbringer. On second thought, maybe I should check if it's expired...
