  1. Well I'm on my way to Forbbiden Plaent. I'll be there in like half an hour to 40 minutes. I think. I wanted to be there a lot earlier but I overslept. Storms! I hope the queue isn't too crazy. I'll see you all - those who are coming at least - there.

ETA: @readergirl7, I got an email newsletter from Brandon last night, sent to those in/nearby the London area, and in it he said there's gonna be a reading and a Q&A as well in the London event.

Update: Ok I asked the staff at Forbbiden Planet and they say it's only gonna be a signing, so I'm not sure anymore. Also there's no queue as of yet.

I am too!!!  I'll be the girl in the large crimson sweater, crazy colored hair, and looking rather nervous in the manga section.  Ready to finally meet some fellow Sharders!

Awesome! I'll be sure to look out for you. Nobody among my family or friends are Brandon fans so it'll be nice to meet fellow fans in person finally :)

Oh and I'll be the short guy, dark hair, clean-shaven, with a black backpack and...I have no idea what I'll be wearing so i'm gonna keep you in suspense over that one :P

My first signing too! I'm going to prepare by making sure I have a solid list of questions before I go, gonna pack my bag with as many of my Cosmere books as I can and I'll try and turn up like an hour or two before.

I also plan on recording this event so going to make sure my phone has enough space for 1hr+ of audio recording!

Thanks this is actually really helpful. I don't reckon we'd have time for more than one question to ask him.

Thank you, especially for explaining the cookie thing. I've read Elantris and loved it but i haven't yet read Warbreaker, I intend to start it after I've read Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning.

Awesome! Warbreaker is an amazing book imo, you'll love it. Also make sure to read Arcanum Unbounded after finishing with the novels, it's full of great short stories and novellas from across the Cosmere.

  5. Hi there @Caitlin , welcome to the 17th Shard :D

I've yet to read any of Brandon's non-Cosmere works either, this is something that I'm planning to rectify soon. Shadows of Self is a really really good book, glad you're loving it, and Bands of Mourning is even better imo.

I'm counting the days till Oathbringer's release. So so excited.

Have you read Elantris and Warbreaker, as well?

As for the cookies, it's just an in-joke here at the 17th shard, which I think originated in the role-playing section here. Whenever some new comes along to the forum some members offer them cookies while others try to warn them against it ('cause they have Hemalurgic spikes in them).  Personally I think the spikes are good for your health but some others may disagree :P

    Greetings!

I was recently turned on to Brandon Sanderson ( I can hear the gasps ) thanks to a friend on Goodreads and have finished the Mistborn series ( I now have a severe case of Sandersonitis ) and recently purchased The Way of Kings and Warbreaker. This is probably the cheesiest question ever, which one should I read first?

Hi there Weyah and welcome to our little crazy fun house!

I know several people have already answered your question but here's my two cents as well, just 'cause I can't resist answering :D . I'd read WoK first, I mean Warbreaker is amazing as well but Way of Kings, and the Stormlight Archive series as a whole, is just on another level, in terms of storytelling, plot intricacies and just the sheer scope it. after you finished Wok, you ould either jump straight to Words of Radience (that's what I did, I just had to know what happened next) or you could read Warbreaker in between the two, it doesn't really matter. There's a minor connection to Warbreaker in Words of Radiance which you would appreciate more if you've already read Warbreaker but besides that, reading Words of Radiance first won't effect your experience at all.

I personally read Warbreaker after reading the first two Stormlight Archive books and I don't regret it at all. Ultimately though, that's all up to you.

Oh by the way, Oathbringer, the third Stormlight Archive novel comes out in November in case you didn't know, so you wanna be caught on the series by then if possible.

Moving on, then you have Elantris, which is the very first Cosmere book Brandon published, that's a really good book too. There's also White Sand. and Arcanum Unbounded which is a collection of Cosmere short stories and novellas and it is absolutely amazing. But wait till you've read, WoR, WoK, Warbreaker, Elantris and Mistborn Era 2 (if you haven't read it already) before reading Arcanum Unbounded otherwise you'd be spoiled big time.

As someone else in this thread mentioned, Brandon has written each series and standalone Cosmere book, so that they can be read and fully enjoyed independent from other Cosmere books and series (with the exception of Arcanum Unbounded) so don't really worry yourself about the order of it, just make sure you read it all. Have fun!

@Gavin-son-son-Odegard Cool.  I'm a big cat person, too.  I have two cats, one an old black-and-white tomcat that I've had since my childhood (he's curled up next to me right now), and a brown, speckled she-cat who keeps on having kittens before my parents can fix her.

They're so cute! My heart's melting. I don't have a cat at the moment, and I really want to, I miss having cats around, but can't afford to take care of a pet at the moment.

When I first joined the 17th Shard, I didn't know how everything worked and so I hadn't known that we were supposed to create an introductory topic.  I'll just post what I have on my "about me" page.  I'm hesitant to put this in a place where people are even more likely to read through it, but once you do, you'll see how I think through things, kind of.

I've learned that the more you learn about yourself, the more there is to know, and I'm at that age where kids have a hard time with that.  Think what you will about this, and I'll try my best not to care if you don't like this.

    *****

I'm a redhead reader, writer, and artist.  I'm not the kind of person who will spend much time on any social-media related thing, but I am probably the biggest sanderfan of my school in Rexburg, and everyone who knows me knows that.  I feel like I'm out of place, here in the Seventeenth Shard, simply because so many people are competitive in trying to prove that they're the biggest fan.

I hope that, in the future, I can talk to Brandon about some things, but the thing is, just about anyone here might want the exact same thing, and it wouldn't really be fair.  I'm a young writer, not near the level I wish I was, but at the level and age where I have a pretty good start, with pretty good chances of quick-enough improvement to get into Brandon Sanderson's BYU classes.  I'm a mormon.

I don't have a very story-like life, mind you.  However, I have developed my own fantasy-ish thought process, where I can make myself act that way and realistically think that I have these ... aspects.  This is before I read Legon, and Brandonalways seems to already have used the creative things I come up with.  Anyway, I have seven aspects, or personalities, each with their own personality.  I don't imagine them inside or outside of me, they're just ... my thoughts and actions.  They share one body - me - and their different personalities often contradict one another (Have you ever seen Inside Out?), but they have made loose amends.  There's Deldri, Charole, Terri, Anera, Rann, Leby, and Sift.

I use their existence to explain how my thoughts work, and why I think in such different ways depending on the situation.  If you do mind me explaining each of them, don't read this.  I'm going to write it as if it were their uncoordinatedly combined thoughts critiquing each others' existance.  So when I say "us," that's the same thing as saying "I."  Yes, that sounds strange as I type it.

    *****

Deldri - She's every bit a nerd, enjoying programing, reading, writing, drawing, learning, etc.  She likes to plan and organize things, and she can easily figure out how things work.  She likes teachers.  Brandon Sanderson is her absolute role model.

Charole - Charole is gloomy, and is unpredictable when it comes to emotion.  She'll hold it in and think about it the wrong ways, in twisted ways.  Paradoxical thoughts is what she calls them.  She knows that she doesn't make sense, but thinks about the whole world as what we perceive to be the wrong way.  We have to try and shut her out and sadly, she helps with that.  She's superstitious, which helps us in some cases, and she likes color, which we think is cool.

Terri - She's devotedly religious and wants progress in life.  She's good at setting goals, and it's up to all of us to try hard to reach them.  She's frustrated because online classes aren't working out for us, and school in general is easier for her and Deldri when it comes to school.  She's the one that's most like a conscience to us.  She, along with Deldri and Anera like minimalism.  We don't own much in our small, clean room.

Anera - She's a tomboy, as athletic as we get.  She encourages exercise and acts small, slightly cold, in big, extroverted groups of people. She loves her bike, and works with Terri when it comes to preparedness.  We have a backpack in our room that contains everything we would need and want incase of a fire, and we take that with us if there is even a small chance of getting kidnapped while biking through town and things.  We also have our D&D and MTG stuff in there, for when we bike to the gamestore to meet up with friends.  Also, Anera loves the outdoors.

Rann - Rann likes netflix.  She's a (sometimes casual) geek of anything awesome, not just sanderstuff.  She has that snacking temptation that we have to snuff out, and loves our monstrously oversized comfortable jacket.  She likes to listen to audiobooks but hates music.  Yes, music is not for us, especially not for her.  She's grudgingly fine with the fact that Terri likes piano and orchestra music.

Leby - Ugh (sorry Leby).  She causes a lot of trouble, socially.  She thinks that abnormal behavior is cool, but she wants people to liker.  She exaggerates to impress people and self-diagnoses us random things.  We still like her, though, she's a small girl who's a happy optimist.

Sift - She knows that she's awesome, in a mixed-up way.  She doesn't care.  Unlike Leby, she doesn't try to impress others, only herself.  She's the one who started all of our invisible friends, and preferred playing alone as a child.  She absolutely loves cats and has a bow and arrow just 'cause, even though we can't use one very well.  She doesn't ever feel the need to talk to people.

    *****

So, that's me/us.  This hopefully explains why I'm weird the way I am, and why I explain myself in different ways to different people.  These aspects are me, and those who know me will see that this fits.  Now that I have explained my life, you can choose to not like me, while knowing that Charole and Sift will help me not to care.  I'm thinking of somehow writing a unique book that contains all of that, how I see things.  Discovering my aspects has helped me tremendously in my life, even if they're not actually real.  So, yah.

Hi there @Runeweaver and welcome to 17th shard.

The way you define these different aspects of yourself is really cool and makes for a great and insightful read. I mean I think of there being different aspects to my personality too but I've never went as far as defining them as clearly as you have and giving them names.

I think it's only fair that I share a little bit more about myself, considering how much you shared. Let's see...I'm 25, have a Master's degree in Games Programming, love everything fantasy. I'm a generally shy person. Not great with socializing. Aside from obviously being a big Sanderfan,  I'm also a huge Harry Potter fan, as well as Lord of the Rings and ASOIAF/Game of Thrones. Vampires are my favorite fantasy beings.

Oh and I'm a writer as well, been working on a dark fantasy novel for a few years now.

I'm agnostic. Huge cat person, big animal lover in general but cats, they have special place in my heart.

And well that's it for now. Feel free to ask if you want to know more.

Oh and once again welcome :)

I've read most if not all of the Cosmere. I just have a short story or two to finish I think haha. Words of Radience was so good however I def had times where I wanted to slap certain characters because of them being silly haha. Oathbringer is going to sososo good! Also it'll be SO HEAVY but it's worth it haha

Oh Words of Radiance was fantastic. I mean I loved Way of Kings but WOR just blew that out of the water. I'm counting days till November and Oathbringer.  Also one of my all time favorite Cosmere characters was introduced in WOR as well, that is the Awesome Lift, god I love her so much. Hope there's more of here in Oathbringer.

Y'all can call me Belle or Bellebon <3 I'm a 21 college student who's been reading Sanderson books since my senior year of high after my brother gave me the Mistborn box set. Needless to say I spent a lot of time reading them instead of studying haha. I'm not a huge theorist (mostly because I'm not aware of all the details out there and so I hesitate) but I love hearing about them! I'm also super into history and love learning about different fun facts!

Hi there Belle and welcome to our little corner of the Cosmere :D oh and do eat the cookie that @StrikerEZ just offered you, it's tasty :P

Have you read all of the Cosmere books and stories?

Mistborn was my introduction into Cosmere and Brandon's writing as wel and it naturally has a special place in my heart, though I'd say Words of Radiance is my favorite Cosmere book so far. I cannot wait for Oathbringer!

I can't believe that. I mean, I'm currently reading SoS, I haven't even reached page 100 yet (started reading it yesterday at work), so I know she might surprise me, but so far she's been one of the most annoying characters in the series (well, maybe Allrianne Cett was worse, I can't decide). Now that I know someone likes her, I want to keep reading just to find out why :P

Are you kidding? Steris is one of the most delightful characters in Mistborn and I'd probably put her in my top 10 favorite Cosmere characters. I won't give anything way, suffice it to say that I love her characters progression in the three Era 2 books so far.

Nice to meet another writer! I love dark fantasy, so if you do publish, I'll gladly purchase your book! I would also love to publish myself and I'm hoping to start sending my novel everywhere once I've finished editing it. Such a tedious process. I'd say it's the worst part of it all! Also, glad to know I'm not the only non-native writing in English! I've always thought I was the odd one out. Keep writing and you'll finish before you know it!

Thanks! though it's gonna be a while before it's ready for publishing. And yeah editing is not fun but it's necessary *sigh. Non-natives writing in English is not uncommon at all, I'm a a member of this really great writing forum and there are a lot of non-native writers who write in English there.

Btw in case you didn't know, Brandon Sanderson does this really great podcast called Writing Excuses where he and three other writers talk about all things writing, it's really useful, they cover all aspects of writing fiction, from characters development to plot to POVs and all the techniques that a writer needs to know, it's really really helpful if you wanna listen to it. They're on season 12 now, but you only need to start with season 10 and go from there.

Good luck with your novel :D

Sports, ah yes, a lot of people assumes I like watching soccer, since I'm Spanish, but I don't like it that much xD I prefer to play it among friends. How cool that you want to come here! I'm sure you'll like the experience. If I had to choose a team, I'd say Real Madrid, (Sorry xDDDDD. I'm told we must now be enemies to death because of that xD), simply because I'm from Madrid, but I really do not care much for it. I actually prefer basketball and keep up to date with the latest NBA news. I'm a Toronto Raptors fan. I know, I know, never won playoffs... but we will someday xD.

Basketball is a cool sport but I could never get into it they way I do soccer/football. I just love soccer, it excites me in a way that no other sport can and part of it may be because I'm Iranian, soccer is really huge in Iran so it's kinda in my blood, I guess. Btw you may be interested to know that both Barcelona and Real Madrid have huge fan bases in Iran. Seriously it's crazy, I used to have so many heated arguments with my friends over Barca- Real Madrid games back when I still lived in Iran. Fun times!

Anyway I hope you don't mind me passionately rooting for Barca come the next Clasico :P

    Hi!

How are you all doing? As you may be able to tell, I'm a newbie, but incredibly excited to get started here. I've been lurking around for a few days, being overwhelmed by the sheer size of this place before I decided I HAD to give it a try and sign up. I've been in a few forums before, but none as big as this one! There are just so many things to do and talk and post! I don't know where to go first. Any advice?

Anyway, I'll talk a bit about myself, since I was supposed to do that from the beginning.

I am a 20-year-old, Spaniard, still a student, I'm afraid, but I also work in a lab, which is awesome. I discovered Brandon Sanderson last year and fell in love with his books. The first one I read was the Stormlight Archive (btw, am I the only one who LOVES books that long? The longer the better. Yup. I just said that.), followed by Mistborn, Reckoners and Elantris. I gotta say, Arcanum Unbounded blew my mind; those moments when you see some small dots connect... best thing ever. I still have a few of his books to read, but I decided to take a break for a while (I read only Brandon Sanderson for... months, so yeah... xD).

Hi there Sheity and welcome to our little crazy corner of the Cosmere :D

I love big books too (as long as they're well-written and engaging), a longer book means more time to spend in the world, immersed in the story and enjoying it. Like, when I finished Words of Radiance I was like why can't this book be longer? I would've happily read on if it went on for another 1000 pages.

Seems you only have Warbreaker and White Sand to read in terms of Cosmere books. Warbreaker is really really good, and you can read it for free on Brandon's website. I've just started reading White Sand myself, we'll see how it turns out.

Outside of this, my favorite book genres are fantasy and sci-fi, but I read almost anything thrown my way. I play videogames, too, ever since I was little. I am a writer, not a professional one, though. I write in English, even though I am a native from Spain (which sucks, because I've gotten better at my English than my Spanish. Somehow. And here in Spain you can hardly find anyone who speaks good enough English). I would love to learn drawing.

Yay a fellow writer! I've been working on a book for years now, it's a dark fantasy which I hope to finish and publish someday soon. Do you intend to publish at all or is it more of a hobby?

Like you I'm not a native English speaker, but I write in English as well, it's just more natural to me and besides I wanna publish in English-speaking countries where the fantasy market is huge.

    Quote

I love sports but I'm horrible at them all. Aaaaand that's pretty much it.

Yet another thing we have in common :D. Though I only follow football (Soccor for the Americans in the forum), which club do you support if you don't mind me asking? I'm a huge FC Barcelona fan, one of the top items on my bucket list is travelling to Barcelona and watching an El Clasico match in Camp Nou.

Anyway welcome again, oh and don't forget to eat the cookies, they're yummmmy :P

    Hello!

So I just finished BoM! Awesome, great. And now it is time I join this forum. I mean, I've been browsing around for a long time.

My name is Thalia, it's nice to be here! I have Kelsier in my avie arriving pretty late also, as usual. It was a sketch I did in my art blog some time ago, and I thought I could use it.
Anyway, so, like I said I finished the mistborn books (for now, the lost metal is supposed to come out next year, right?) and because I have an insatiable thirst for everything about the cosmere right now, I will pick up Way of Kings next.
I feel a little lost, to be honest. There's so much... about everything. But hopefully I will start sorting things out once I've read the other books.

    umm
    yeah, that's about it.

I'm shy so I'll probably just upvote stuff around here and maybe someday I'll even post an answer, hope that's okay

But in the meantime, I have a lot of reading to do.

    Thank you!
    Thail

Hey there Thail, welcome to the 17 shard.

Mistborn is such an amazing series, it was my introduction to the Cosmere. You definitely need to read Stormlight Archive, it's one of the best fantasy series I've ever read and as much as I love Mistborn, SA is just on a whole other level. Words of Radiance in particular is so good, it's just epic in every sense of the world .You're in for a crazy ride :D

  14. Hi @Serce Forts! welcome to the 17 shard. And do make sure to eat the yummy spiked brownie. It's soooo good :P

Mistborn was the first Sanderson book that I read so it has a special place in my heart but After reading WoR, Stormlight Archive has become my favorite Cosmere series and one of my favorite all time book series. I've read Arcanum Unbounded and I'm in the process of reading Warbreaker which is gonna take longer than I like cuz I'm super busy at the moment.

Favorite character...I'm gonna cheat and go top 5: Kelsier and Lift, followed closely by Shallan, Kaladin and Vin.  And Hoid, well Hoid is in his own special category all by himself.

  15. I, on the other hand love every single thing about Mistborn and Scadrial. The characters (Vin is my favorite and I think Kelsier is one of the best characters in the entire Cosmere so far), the story is incredible to me and world is really creative, with ash falling from the sky and the mists and everything else the we learn along the way. The Well of Ascension is my least favorite of the Era 1 trilogy but I still love it (especially the last act, so to speak) as for Era 2(the Wax and Wayne series), I've been loving that as well. Alloy of Law itself was good, but it really took of in Shadows of Self, and Band of Mourning is incredible imo, and that ending...god that blew my mind.

Now we got one more book in the Era 2 series, then I think we'll have che Contemporary fantasy Mistborn trilogy and after that the space age Mistborn trilogy which like you I'm super excited about. It's gonna be a while till we get there though.

Hello. I've been stalking 17th and the Coppermind for a while and decided to actually do something with it. So hello.

I guess...hi. I'm Tal, which is short for the ace lightweaver, but you could also call me Mackenzie. I'm not picky. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm really into cosmere theory (which is sort of a prerequisite if you're on this site) with a specific focus on Rosharian and Nalthisian stuff, although I've recently been getting more into Selish and I've been looking at whatever the heck Threnody is. I can speak educatedly about Scadrian shards and what not, but since Mistborn never appealed to me as much as some of the other Cosmere books, I don't care as much about it. Also everyone and their cousin is into Scadrial, and I feel like Nalthis doesn't get enough love. So yeah, I'm a fan, I'm a theorist, and I exist.

    Supposedly.

Hi Tal and welcome to the 17th Shard :D. It's interesting (and kinda baffling) to me that you say you don't like Mistborn as much as the rest of the Cosmere books since I count it as one of my all time favorite book series and as far as Brandon's books go, it's right up there with Stormlight Archive for me. also Mistborn is the first Brandon book I read and my introduction to the Cosmere so I'm biased towards it.  Anyway different strokes for different folks and all that :P

Once again welcome to the forum and I hope you have fun here. And don't listen to all the Cookie Naysayers, eat to your heart's desire ;)
