I'm not so sure that shalladin is a possibility anymore. I remember BS saying in an interview that he wants his books to be the sort that he would be proud of his children reading. And whilst that can be interpreted as excluding scenes of a sexual nature, I think it may also mean that he is likely to intergrate his mormon beliefs into the book more readily. And it's my understanding that the sanctity of marriage is important in his religion, and therefore he is unlikely to break shadolin apart now that they've wed. And adultery is most certainly a grave sin, and I can't see BS debasing his characters like that. Regardless of OBs outcome, I'm still a shalladin shipper. That doesn't mean that I think that they'll end up together, or that they'll even have any more meaningful scenes together. But I'll always ship them for the way they made me feel when I was reading about them during the chasm scene. I honestly have never become so quickly attached to a ship as I did then. When I reread the chasm scene, it will almost certainly be slightly tinged in sadness, but I don't mind so much because I've always enjoyed bittersweet romance too.

I'm trying to remember the last time I was so disappointed by the outcome of a love triangle, yet unsurprised. I went in to this book knowing that shadolin was the likely outcome so I mentally prepared myself for it. Mostly because that fandom is by far the largest/most vocal, so the cynic in me considered that BS may pander to it, but also because it fits with his trope of arranged marriages working out as many on this thread have stated. But I hoped to have one of two main outcomes in OB. That Shallan and Kaladin have a meaningful interaction the way they did in the chasms in WoR (even if they didn't end up together) or that BS would start forming a deeper connection for Adolin and Shallan, such that I would feel accepting of the progression of the story in their direction. And neither of these things happened. Shallan and Adolin stayed as superficial and cheesy as they always have been. Whilst in WoR all I had felt towards them was varying degrees of boredom, I found myself actively cringing at the things they said to each other in OB. It felt as though some of the sweet nothings they would say to each other were over the top romantic for the place their relationship is actually at (which is early on), and I found this jarring to read and more than a little embarrassing. What I may have disliked the most was the downplaying of Shallan's feelings towards Kaladin as meerly leching by Veil. What then was the chasm scene - one of the most beautiful and subtle romantic scenes that BS has ever written? If BS is capable of writing a scene as rich with nuanced emotion as that one, why has he not done so for adolin and shallan? I haven't gathered all my thoughts completely as I've just finished reading it, but I think I'll have to have a reread of certain sections before I go in to more depth on the topic.

Best Character Names

I love the name Elhokar. Sylphrena and Kaladin are close seconds. Oh, and it goes without saying that Szeth deserves a spot on the list too. -
[OB] GUYS, I GOT OTHBRINGER!! No spoilers

Wow, you lucky thing! Happy reading! Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate how beautiful that cover is!? Can't wait to get my mitts on it. -
Would you let amazon into your home?
PlanetReelo replied to mattig89ch's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, hell would have to freeze over first. Other than the fact that they would almost certainly let my fur baby out of the house, I hate the idea of a total stranger being in my home. Not sure how they expected positive reception on this idea. Plus there's easy access to my garden, so I usually ask them to put the package there when i'm out. -
Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
PlanetReelo replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
That's exactly the way she is, you couldn't have put it better. She's surprisingly clever, and that combined with her ruthlessness and tendency to pathological lying makes her really formidable. It's taken a lot of energy trying to understand what she's plotting and how to out maneuver her. For example, my mother never used to spend a penny of her salary on the household, so my dad paid bills/mortgage/food costs/clothing costs etc. But since she called for divorce she's basically been throwing her money at my younger brothers, letting them buy whatever they want just to show that she does make a considerable contribution to the household and therefore will require more money from him as support. I really appreciate the support @Darkness_ @A Budgie @Ammanas @Ookla the Dragon...all of you are pretty awesome peeps! You have no idea the world of good it has done me just talking about it on here, I already feel some weight off my shoulders. Because i've been advised not to broadcast my mother's 'indiscretions' to our social circle so that I can appear neutral enough to give a statement in court if it ever comes to that, I've had to keep this more or less to myself until now. Feels good to just let it out. -

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
PlanetReelo replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
My parents are going through the most drawn out, painful divorce at the moment. Long story short, they had an arranged marriage where my dad was 100% for it but my mother was pressured in to it by her father who wanted her to marry well (to a doctor). Since then, my mother has always felt that she could have done much better than my dad, who is a rather simple but kind fellow. I grew used to seeing her enjoy the extravagances of life (expensive perfumes, weekly theatre trips, luxurious meals out) whilst my dad worked seven days a week to maintain us. That arrangement suited her just fine, up until half a year ago. She not only called for divorce, but tried to fabricate lies that my dad was abusive in the relationship. She did this in part to hurt his reputation, but more importantly to have a clear shot at getting the house when splitting assets (which she would otherwise be unable to afford by herself). She has been spreading her false victim narrative to anyone who will listen, and has been using every dirty lie to make sure she takes everything from my dad. She even claimed for his car and she doesn't even drive!! She takes a taxi to work everyday like the pampered princess she is. So fast forward to today, when I go to meet with my dad and his lawyer to discuss the case. I've had strong suspicions that my mother has been having an affair for the past two years. Lots of things have pointed to it really - disappearing for hours after work daily, secretive phonecalls and messages from a private number, an increase in the abundance of gifts year round to name just a few things. But today, we went through her financial statement (as both parties have to exchange it), and found that she had frequently visited hotels, on days when she claimed to be at work. My dad was completely devastated, because I think on some level he still hoped that it wasn't true. And his reaction broke my heart in to tiny pieces. So it's been a seriously rough day today, but it's also strengthened my resolve to help my dad avoid total ruin at the hands of this maniacal witch. -
1: I became a fan after I picked up the Final Empire from an airport bookshop just under a decade ago. It was a slapdash decision, but one that I'm very lucky to have made! 2: I've always been the most impressed by his beautiful and immersive worldbuilding, as well as his unique magic systems. But his character development also deserves a great deal of praise, with Kaladin and Shallan being some of the most relatable, likeable characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading about. 3: Stormlight Archive 4: I would say...an 8! My level of fanaticism can vary depending on my need for escapism. For example, I was in a bad place whilst reading WoR as my parents were going through a very messy divorce. I can remember that reading WoR during those nights was the only activity that would give me any joy at all. Similarly, I'm having a tough time at work so I've reread both WoK and WoR to keep me going. To put it simply, I always find solace in BS's wonderful stories. 5: 9 or 10

I feel exactly the same way! If I do give in and start reading it on the 16th November (UK release date), then I will literally stretch it out for as long as I can, as I did with Words of Radiance. I would read only a tiny bit a day, but the feeling of having something to look forward to each day made that restraint worth it. It shouldn't be too difficult as I really only get a chance to read on the weekends. But I hope I can exercise as much self control this time round!

What are you playing right now?
PlanetReelo replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Started and finished The Walking Dead today, as it was on offer for £3.99 on PSN. Oh. My. GOODNESS! What an excellent game! So incredibly emotional, and reminiscent of Last of Us (which I also absolutely adore). -
I used to buy such pretty bookmarks and they would always slip in to non existence too! These days I just message the page number to myself.

The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
PlanetReelo replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
Wow congratulations! With a score like that, I imagine you have many doors open to you. I hope you get in to Stanford! Nothing too exciting on my end, just that I've been having the most ridiculously intense time at work and now i'm finally on my week off so I feel like I can breathe again! Can't wait to catch up on all my books/games/manga/movies/tv shows! -
I absolutely loved 'Your name'! My hubby and I watched it at the cinema, and we were so happy that we did because we got to behold the visual beauty in all its glory. Koe no katachi is great too, though I found that the character development was slightly lacking so I read the manga which was heart wrenching in the best way. On a side note, is anyone else as excited as I am about the 4th season of Full Metal Panic and three movies?? After almost two decades of watching anime, it's still on my top 5 anime series, it just holds such an important place in my heart. I almost cried from happiness when I heard the announcement!

I can't stand Doctor Who. I've tried to watch it many times on the insistence of some die-hard friends, but I find it incredibly hammy and cringeworthy. -
I'm reading Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor to get me through this pre-oathbringer lull. So far it's proven to be a nice and light read, not yet at the point of being captivating. But I'm not half way through as of yet. Taylor's descriptive style is beautiful too.

I really didn't enjoy the Steins Gate anime. It's constantly included in top 5 lists and is considered a masterpiece by the community, but I've watched it twice now and I was bored both times. And I never really warmed to any of the characters. And I agree with Mulk about GOT, I dropped it in the middle of book three. It became tiresome to trudge through, especially the time taken to refamiliarise yourself with everything if you ever took a break from reading it. -
This is my first ever attempt at creating fanart, so what better way to start than with my favourite character! I haven't drawn in years due to university/work, so in a way this has been a road to rediscovery for me! Looking forward to trying my hand at a drawing of Shallan soon...

From the album: Kaladin Stormblessed
My first ever fanart, so obviously it had to be Kal! On a side note, couldn't fit all of Kal's brand on to his forehead... -

Wow that's awesome! xD So does BS know about KH? Or was he referring to the keyblade without knowing its origin? I really hope it's the former! -
Ah that's a shame, i may just swerve that then. Although tbf I've got so many series that I'm trying to juggle right now! Do any of you guys watch Shokugeki no soma? It's my ultimate guilty pleasure, the foodie in me just can't resist! It's had a really strong opening episode for S3 imo, i'm quite relieved because I felt that the quality dropped in S2.

I'm shamelessly practicing thread necromancy so I can share some of the delicious things I've eaten of late! I'm a huge fan of japanese cuisine, and recently I've been on a mission to sample foods from fiction. -

Playing Danganronpa V3 at the moment! I absolutely love Danganronpa 1 & 2, both are easily in my top 5 games. They're not easy to get in to due to prolonged introduction chapters, but the wait is well worth it! -

Nice to meet a fellow KH fan! I completely agree with you about Roxas > Ventus. I might even go so far as to say that I started to like Roxas a bit more than Sora! But my favourite friendship is Aqua/Terra/Ventus. Aqua is my favourite character of the franchise, but she and Terra had such awful english dub voice acting that it was hard seperating my strong dislike for it from the characters themselves. Other favourite video game/anime characters; FF7: Tifa Lockhart - Strong, dependable and beautiful, everything my little ten year old self aspired to be! Bioshock Infinite: Booker and Elizabeth - Both characters were fleshed out and interesting in their own right, but together they develop a strong if unusual bond which was a pleasure to witness. Last of us: Joel - I have an affinity to characters who endure struggles for those they hold dear. He was flawed too, as is evidenced by his debatably selfish actions at the end of the game. But those flaws make me love a character more. Full Metal Panic: Sagara Sosuke and Kaname Chidori - Love these characters simply because of the endless laughter their wacky interactions bring about. Is it the healthiest relationship ever? Probably not. Does it make for some excellent slapstick comedy? Why yes, yes it does. Yona of the dawn: Yona - Her character growth is one of the most notable in any recent media I have read/watched. From prissy, selfish princess to a weary, battle hardened warrior. Maybe not battles in the literal sense, but certainly every difficulty she has endured to get her throne back. I could honestly go on and on, but I'll leave it at that for now!
