  1. My thought was similar to a bunch stated, that the people of the planets think of it as flat. Or at least, they think of their part of the world as flat. The continent of Roshar, for example, doesn't wrap around on itself, so it makes sense that it would be represented as a flat space in Shadesmar.

Similarly for other worlds. Though they may very well know that their planets are round, they have no actual experience with them being round, because that would require the ability to travel really far in one direction and end up in the same place again. Which is laughable. At the current technological level. As a result, their perception is of it as a map, so that's how it shows up in Shadesmar.

But Scadrial has already developed, if I remember correctly, several different methods of flight. Any time now, they will begin being a more "global society" (for lack of a better term) like our current world. Then, it will be much more immediately in people's minds that the world is, in fact, a globe. Since perceptions, particularly large-scale perceptions, mean so much in Shadesmar... what will happen to Scadrial there?

He bears the weight of God’s own divine hatred, separated from the virtues that gave it context.

Context like... only hating people that were dishonorable? I really like this theory. I could absolutely, 100% see Dalinar ascending to both Honor and Odium, giving Odium context... if Harmony had not already done the same thing. Because Brandon has already done that once, it seems highly unlikely he'd do it again here.

But Odum/Honor would work so, so much better than Ruin/Preservation. Ruin and Preservation are diametrically opposed: Honor and Odium do not need to be.

But Brandon already wrote that. But, that letter would be such good foreshadowing.

  3. One of my friends has been re-reading the Wheel of Time, and came across a WoB that surprised him -- that Asmodean is dead.

The reason this surprised him so much is that up until this point, including reading the entire series once before, he'd thought it very clear that Osan-Gar was Asmodean.

So... who is Osan-Gar? Is it possible that Asmodean was killed, but then was brought back as Osan-Gar?

We don't know that he founded the Radiants. Just that The Way of Kings was viewed as a inspiration for the Orders.

Frankly, I would find the book far more meaningful if he wasn't a Surgebinder, and just a good man whose views helped guide other people.

I'm afraid that that is not the case.

Dalinar cursed, leaning forward, worried for the old man - until he spotted Nohadon glowing. He was a Surgebinder - but Dalinar had known that from the last vision, hadn't he?"

I think he was surely a bondsmith (to the extent the order hadn't been invented yet). He's big into uniting.

An old WoB has tension (which a bondsmith has) as being able to make flexible things stiff with the example given to snap out cloth and make it rigid. Maybe the dude slid down the cloth because he tensioned it.

As to the first, I kinda get the impression that the order had already been established, insomuch as various spren were imitating the Heralds honorblades. They didn't have Oaths or a structure yet, however.

Sure, making things stiff could work... I guess. It seems much more like dancing on the edge, however.

It IS possible to bond two spren... maybe he was the EDGE case ;)

That is actually a really interesting idea. This WoB I came across makes it seem more plausible.

Is Nohadon a herald. There are tons and tons of little things that make me think this. Like the KR have the Way of Kings to base their views and policies on. Which, as was stated, was written by him. In Dalinar's vision of Nohadon, he says things about surgebindings and implies the man he's speaking to is a leader of an order, like he himself is. We know, from the WoR (In world) excerpts, that all the orders were lead by the heralds, after a time anyway. That's my reasoning, not that you need it, if it's true or not true. I just thought I might clarify why I came to that conclusion.

    Brandon Sanderson

Nohadon is not a Herald, but I can see what lead you to think otherwise. Let's just say that even among kings and surgebinders, he was someone special.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, that seems like a very Edgedancer-y thing to do. Edgedancer also fits his other things rather well; he remembers the small. He walked from Abamabar to Urithiru, finding people along the way and watching them.

But at the same time, I got the impression from the first book that he was a Bondsmith, what with founding the Knights Radiant and all. I looked it up in Arcanum, and sure enough, someone has asked.

    RAFO! Good question.

So, which do you think it is?

  6. I don't know how common this theory is, but it seems incredibly clear to me. How Lift defines herself is by needing to steal food, which is partly why she left Azir. Everyone was just giving her food.

The Nightwatcher(Or Cultivation, in all likelihood) recognized that. Her take on "Never change" is "Always have what Lift defines herself by, the search for food, be essential to her."

  7. Since this thread HAS been revived...

I think it's worth noting that the Alethi are very likely to be descended from the Knights Radiant, what with Light Eyes being both a ubiquitous Radiant trait and a Vorin mark of prestige and divine right. The Knights Radiant, or at the very least the Windrunners, are (separately from the Alethi) also referred to as "Of Honor."

That said, I do love this whole theory, it is quite intriguing.

  8. The movie was very good, and, in my mind anyway, redeems the new trilogy. That said, I expected it to do so, so that wasn't a surprise at all.

My favourite part. Luke (we don't know it yet, but he's a force projection) is walking out the blown open door of the base. And Darth Vader's theme starts playing.

Well, not exactly Darth's theme, but it was worked into it. That was AMAZING.

  9. Hurt Fortuity, Heal Elhokar.

Come on, guys, keep the king of Alethkar alive!

On that note, where's Nohadon? And Gawx? And the kings in Alcatraz? And Fen? And all the other royalty? I want a comprehensive list!

  10. So, I've been re-reading Mistborn again, and I came across Sazed teaching Vin.... about Trell.

Firstly, I hadn't realized that he'd been mentioned so early on.

Secondly, the whole belief was about the stars being Trell's eyes, and the sun being his brother's single eye.

This reminds me of (very very minor Way of Kings and AU spoilers)

    Spoiler

The Scar that's mentioned in basically all the books, (Taln's scar in Stormlight, for example, it's also definitely mentioned in Warbreaker) and the Purelaker religion of Nu Ralik and..... Ishikk?

So, what do you all think?

  11. I was reading through Arcanum and found this.

Are there requirements to join the Seventeenth Shard, and would they accept, for lack of a better term, a non-enhanced member?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes and yes... Baon is not Invested...

That sounds very much like Khriss is invested. Otherwise, Sanderson would just say that it is Khriss: she is the more obvious choice.

So, what do you think she is invested with? Did Kenton find a way to give her Sand Mastery, or what?

An Head crush blow will kill a Radiant, so the Plate's helm is the key of a Radiant's survival.

We have direct confirmation that the surge of Regrowth will allow them to heal from a crushed head. Renarin was fighting a Thunderclast, was smashed into the floor, and just got up and kept fighting. I see no way that that does not include "crushed skull."

  13. Gravitation and (whatever "slickness" is) would make for an amazing offensive weapon.

It'd gain a massive amount of velocity really fast, and either impact something extremely powerfully or, if you put an amount of stormlight into the slickness that it stops being slick at a predetermined time, work as a nuclear fusion bomb and kill everybody near by with plasma.

  14. Quote

I don't. A Radiant will die from a crushed skull even while holding Stormlight. Compounding gold will literally heal decapitation, or being burnt to a skeleton.

Yes. That is true of any radiant that does not have the surge of Regrowth.

    (OB spoilers)

    Spoiler

We see either Renarin(I think, might be Lift) crushed by a Thunderclast. Even the most conservative version of that includes his skull being crushed. And then he just pops up and keeps fighting.

A Steeldancer, however, WILL have regrowth.

  15. Well, I was reading through Arcanum for one of the newer signings.... and I came across this.

    Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

How do you write the *inaudible* fighting, like the fencing aspect of it? <I guess you do> all the research for that, the way the Shards actually work?

    Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

So, the fight scenes, right? The first drafts are usually pretty bad. I kind of just get down what's happening, who it's happening to, what I want the outcome to be. And then I do a lot of refining, and I try to find people who are actual fencers...

And I usually try to add something to my worlds that doesn't exist in our worlds, like Shardblades and things, just so I can have a little more suspension of disbelief for people like yourself, where you're like "Well, they have different positions."

But I do try to get some primary sources who can tell me where I'm doing stuff really bad. Matt Easton's YouTube channel is really great for that. Schola Gladitoria, Matt Easton. When I have two people who are fighting with actual weapons, I go... he usually has done some HEMA things where you see, like, ten bouts with that. And I can watch it, and be like "Alright, this is how it would go down."

Matt Easton isn't my favourite youtuber - that goes to Lloyd, aka Lindybeige, but I've watched a LOT of Easton's videos. So this was awesome.

Sorry for the randomness, I just needed to share my excitement somewhere.

  16. It slowly came to me, my gut reaction at learning about her shardblade was that she was Vivenna. However, I dismissed that and forgot about it, until one of the fight scenes with her. She was killing people, and they were turning grey... "Oh, I think this might be Vivenna....." She had a cloak wrapped around her left arm. "Yes, I am pretty sure this is Vivenna!" "They'll be like Crimson to defeat." VIVENNA!!!!!!!!!!

  17. For some reason I  nearly always tear up when someone does something kind that is the opposite of what we assumed(though still, obviously, it has to work.) The only time I distinctly remember crying was when Dalinar stood up to Odium, though I'm certain I cried in other similar parts. I think I did when we met Oredon, too... just so you all know, he's now my second favourite character, after Syl. He BETTER be the main character of the second half.

Oh, I also cried with the whole "Something improper? Like dividing by zero?" scene. That, however, was because I was laughing.
