The color is bland, the powers are boring and the spren is awful looking. Then again....I would be able to do a lot of healing. I could save soooo many lives and help so many people...far far more than I could with flying....but flying is awesome though. How selfish am I really? Would I give up healing others for being able to play Superman? Nahhhhh. I'm terrible but not that terrible.
-
Terrible. My least favorite order. A crystal snake plant following me around plus skating and healing. Ugh. Will try again later and weigh the percentages more carefully. I want to fly! If I just become more closely aligned with Edgedancers Ill be super annoyed.

Any kind. Blindness is a physical disability as far I know. I don't think it affects the individual's ability to develop certain personality traits. I could be wrong but I've never heard anything to the contrary. What I'm saying is that if a person developed into XJCPG based on their spirit and their experiences in life, it is unlikely to me they would would develop into that same figure given different life experiences. Maybe an XKFCA instead (the X is for stubborn). Hmmm..... ......and they did this by turning into weapons and granting cool magic powers instead of, I don't know, using bonds to help develop humanity into a more psychologically stable force. It's not some social experiment. They were giving humanity tools to fight and endure in war. Thanks for providing evidence to support my case....that was unexpected. It's not some purely elemental force as I knew. Spren are attracted by a certain type of character but still have a choice in who they bond with. Exactly what I've been saying and Brandon reaffirms it multiple times here. I don't. In this thread, I've been imagining her as being born blind and more dependent by circumstances instead of being able to coast. I am aware that we disagree on this point though, and I don't believe I can sway you. Different life experiences. No, no, n-......wait, that is what I was saying! Wow! PS: Ya'll, I don't think it's impossible for a blind person the be chosen just extremely unlikely due the....blindness.

S word? F word? Why didn't you type out the words? Either because that sort of vulgarity is not allowed on the site or you're not comfortable using the terms I'm sure. Because of course, people using curse words doesn't somehow change that they are curse words, right? Storms is different. It can be used at one moment and someone would think you need to wash your mouth with soap and in the next instance, someone would find it a perfectly acceptable polite way to refer to a weather condition. If we were on Roshar using this site, storms would't be blocked because it couldn't be blocked because what else are you going to use in place of the term? Rosharans certainly don't have any oft used alternative. That's pretty much all I have to say there. This dragged on for quite some time from an intended one off comment.

What? No. I'm saying that in a hypothetical blind reality that its unlikely that a person would develop the same personality traits. I was asking why you bothered to debate me on a topic that you initially were not involved in only to tell me you don't feel its relevant. An odd occurrence. If you feel its irrelevant, just can ignore it. As you indicated, its a choice on what you reply to. That sounds like they began bonding with humans and transforming into swords and granting superpowers just for the fun of it. I think spren choose knights to grant power to humanity not to live a 'The Real World" scenario.

If Kaladin went blind after the bonding process started it would follow through. If we're talking about a situation where Kaladin was blind from birth, thats a totally different story.

Ohhhhhhh. I feel like blind Jansah would not be in the same position as current Jasnah and that Ivory would choose someone who could see. I reject the premise. If a blind person did manage to reach Jasnah's level of ability, then it would make total sense for a spren to choose them. Sight or no sight, that person is one in a million You're not telling me anything I don't already know.

It doesnt allow you to prove anything though. Its just something interesting to discuss. I never indicated otherwise. Well no, not everything in the same way as everyone else. This is where we disagree. Yes of course. We all are and no one is wrong regardless of their stance. Completely impossible to know how the butterfly effect would change event and people. Yes, I find it unlikely that such a change would have little effect on a persons personality and objectives. I think there is more to Spren choices than personality and I dont think a spren would choose a blind person over a sighted person with the same characteristics.

Oh, that sounds so much like my Jasnah. I think you just don't know what you're missing. I've seen testimonies from others who confirm that sensory input is not particularly powerful...its just a skill they were forced to learn. Imagine a situation where you are deafened by loud explosion. Who will navigate better afterward, a seeing person or a blind person? I find this sort of argument silly. Obviously a blind person will handle blindness better than a person used to sight just as a boxer would handle a fight better than an untrained individual. Who cares? Again, which do you think we be more effective overall: -Every Radiant has psychological hang ups (as is pretty normal in world) -Every Radiant is blind No it isn't. It's just a hypothetical situation you made up. Or maybe Gavilar would have doted on her. Maybe being forced to rely on others would have greatly dampened her independent streak and confidence. Maybe Jasnah would care about having a masculine relationship with literature and learning. Again, it's entirely possible this blind woman would be similar to Jasnah we know now. I find it unlikely.

Notice we are not discussing religious terms.....I specifically excluded them. Use of Almighty and Damnation dont bother me at all in Stormlight. Use of the word storm does. I find it silly. No idea what you're talking about.
-
Pretty much everyone thinks it hinges on the group you're in.....that's the point. Common nouns like "storm" aren't words in the real world that you have to worry about situational context. That's why I find it so odd. If storms morphed into a vulgarity there should be a replacement word for describing the weather condition. A word we use as slang for a penis is no longer used to describe a detective. A word we use for homosexuals is no longer used to categorize a cheerful person. Storms being both a standard noun and a vulgarity is just silly as heck. Yes.....which is why I'm not sure why you're making arguments like "teens curse all the time" or "other people in the world have different curse words." If your goal is to convince me use of storms in Stormlight actually reflects real world vulgarities, give me some examples from our world that share a similar usage.
-
Why are you commenting on it then AonEne? I was replying to another poster. I haven't discussed Jasnah going blind at all. I'm discussing whether Gavilar's daughter would any different if she was born blind. Is it possible she would resemble the Jasnah? Sure, it's possible but extremely unlikely. She wouldn't even be able to effectively engage with the feminine arts but she would be still be scholarly minded? Sure maybe, but as I said previously, eh. It's all good BR. We just disagree entirely on whether paying attention to other sensory input is a greater advantage than being able to see.

Do you believe that people are almost entirely defined by genetically and spiritually inherited traits that are immutable regardless of circumstances? If so, this is another point we can agree to disagree on.

I got it: storm, storms, stormy, storming, stormo, stormoski (Jesus, someone, stop me) No, but a certain group spewing profanity doesn't make foul language clean. It is but I don't equate blaspheming God with use of a common term like storms. ...I'm one of those people, but only a fool thinks that vulgarities are appropriate in any situation. I wouldn't say "I don't (f-word ) know" to my boss or anything similar. No, I dont need you to tell me that culture varies from business to business and that some bosses are fine with their subordinates cursing. Christ, I don't even know why I'm arguing any of this when curse words are straight up banned on this very site.

Cool. I see we're definitely not going to reach any agreement there then. Eh. We're doing nature vs nurture now? We've seen one character in the Cosmere whose personality and abilities change with her origins which she alters through realmatic magic. Brandon wrote an entire book based on the concept of altering the past to effect the present. It's cool to say that it's possible that Jasnah would be exactly the same and sure, possible, but probable? ...eh. Yes, I stated that directly. Word? All surges can be used by the blind but not as well as a person with sight in most instances. Again I'm not saying its impossible for a blind person to be a Radiant. I just think it's unlikely....due the blindness. I do. Time will possibly tell...or not. How about this....which do you think we be more effective overall: -Every Radiant has psychological hang ups (as is pretty normal in world) -Every Radiant is blind Yes in a far more limited way. A sighted person can pick up smells and sounds as well as a blind person if they focused but most people don't train those senses because sight is such a powerful tool.

How many not related to religion? Dunno....I cannot think of any curse words that also serve as standard parts of polite conversation. It would make more sense if storm having developed into a swear had fallen out of use as a general term to describe.....storms. No. Even if I had, that would be an extreme minority.
-
Not in my neck of the woods. This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rulesk Theyre all vulgar no matter the context. I'm sure if I typed out the words for example that my post would be edited or deleted. Edit: I see my post was instantly reported. Removing even the asterisks!

To be clear, I'm not saying that it is impossible for a blind person to become a Radiant. You're right. I do not dispute any of this. In what capacity do you think a blind person may come into this position of leadership or attract followers? What about this person in this role would make them a more effective choice than a person with sight? The only way I will get to know a blind Rosharan is if we meet one in the books. People on Roshar do not have the same accommodations that are available to you and me. My apologies for the lack of comedic edge in my post. My point is that I don't think a spren would choose a blind person because a blind person would not be able to help in the way that a sighted individual can. As well,a blind person is less likely to be in a position attractive to a spren. Of the examples you listed, the only that requires being a Radiant is the first. Also, blind construction workers? Blind investigators casing a crime scene? Be serious. We all know that not all Radiants are warriors. It's stated clearly in the books and shown through those Radiants we see on screen. However, why would a spren choose a person with such a disadvantage as blindness over another individual? Doesn't a a spren want their Radiants to have access to the surges? How many surges can really be as effectively used by a blind person as a sighted person? One? Two? Why would a person who is an advisor need access to other surges? Why not let this blind advisor continue as usual and grant the surges to some other worthy individual who can use them more efficiently? I never indicated that they were. Yes. Blind people having greater disadvantages than sighted people is not a matter of bias. It's a fact. Do you disagree with this? What if Jasnah was born blind? She wouldn't be Jasnah. She would have had totally different life experiences and wouldn't be the person we read in the books.

It's very odd reading the books and seeing the word "storm," with its standardized meaning, used as an expletive. Like, your tone of voice determines whether use of the word is vulgar and with no alternatives other than "damnation" and evoking your religion? We have more variety and a larger selection of words to use.

I think he was more saying that if you could communicate with the spren you would notice a difference in the dead blade spren with and without their paired radiant plate.

I seperate emotional and mental instabilities from physical handicaps. Who would a blind person be leading and protecting? I don't like to take charge but id be leading a blind person across the street, not the other way around,

You don't think the ability to see matters to a Radiant? What job would be available to blind Rosharans? This is about people born blind, yes? I believe Syls partner died in battle, not in his bed. I dont see that being old matters considering that stormlight magically invigorates you.
