Thanks! To be fair, it was on a second perusal. Sooo, I'm not that cool. I have NO idea what that means.... still kinda new to this. ???

Awesome! Thanks, guys! That's all I wanted to know! ^^ I had an inkling....dang! I gotta get to that second book!

Hey - so I have ONLY finished the first Mistborn (Final Empire). Please keep that in mind when you answer! I have a question about a passage from Chapter 31, p. 522 (paperback) Vin and Kelsier are talking on the roof and she has just told him she could see through Shan's coppercloud. Kelsier is asking her to sense what metal he's burning through his copper... And then she ends up sensing Kelsier's metal instead. SO - my question is, it is the Lord Ruler she is sensing? I kind of guessed that at first, but then again, we all know Sanderson is NOT a wasteful writer. He never mentions something that isn't important, in some way (even if it's not answered until way later.) I feel like he never actually answered the question of what she sensed. Should I keep this passage in mind for the next book? This may be a short thread, since these are almost yes or no questions (sorry!) but it's really bugging me. Thanks in advance!

Hey yo! Any other Lindsey Stirling fans out there? I have been a Lindsey fan since her YouTube origin days. I think I first heard her in 2012 - "Crystallize" and "Elements" were the first two songs I heard. Now I pretty much listen to her albums all the time - haha! My daughter loves to rockin' to Lindsey in her car seat . (Because, I'm a concerned mother who wants to ensure that my child is exposed to diverse things like...dubstep violin .) Anywho - if you're a Lindsey fan share your Lindsey experience! What was the first song you heard? What is your favorite song? Fave video? I am in love with her newest release - "The Arena":

Augh! I totally thought the same thing, which is why I didn't think it was Dalinar either. I mean, it makes sense if it IS Dalinar, but the coloring threw me off. Interesting....

I will have to think about my actual response/casting ideas, but I think it's funny that this topic began with many people suggesting Nathan Fillion, and Summer Glau. That was back in 2010. I feel like NOW....they are too old! They were even too old for the characters back in '10, I think. Maybe Ellen Page could work. But as far as Glau and Fillion (while I totally love them BOTH - yay, Firefly fans?) unfortunately I think they're a little past the cutoff point... Summer Glau is 34 (and Vin is supposed to be a young looking 16) and Fillion is 45, which is a bit older than Kelsier's like 35 (although, arguably, that could work...) They'd better get hoppin' on this movie/series or the people we've "casted" are going to have to play old characters. Nathan Fillion will be Mennis Just kidding... One casting I'd considered while reading was Ben Kingsley as Sazed. Not sure if that's been suggested yet...

K, so first of all, Thank you @Assassin in Burgundy for making this quiz. I'm like, super excited! I feel like I've regressed back to my Lord of the Rings days of online quizzes (incidentally, Tharatariel was one of my Elvish names...because you know, those quizzes are so accurate, and it was totally not made up by whomever created the quiz. ) Anywho - yes, awesome! I did it a few times, the first time I got 38% Bondsmith, with a tie for Truthwatcher and Edgedancer (34%). I am totally happy with being a Bondsmith (I mean, hey! pretty cool right?) But just because I wasn't sure about a couple of my answers I went and did it again, twice, each time I got Truthwatcher (once 63% another 50%.) While I'd like to consider myself to be tactful and considerate, I am definitely not private or relate in anyway to Renarin who is the one we all know as a Truthwatcher. As in, I'm very extroverted and want to be involved and don't have a problem taking charge. Which, I think is more Bondsmith like. So, I will have to side with @Erklitt - this is really cool, but it probably CAN'T be accurate until we know more about the other Radiant groups. So, as more books come out, I look forward to taking revised quizzes! What a fun idea.

Aon Omi - Elantris' love story
Tharatariel10 replied to Tharatariel10's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Well, I started with The Stormlight Archive, then White Sand, then Elantris and now I've just begun Mistborn. I thoroughly enjoyed the little love story between Dalinar and Navani, and of course the events of WoR with Shallan and Adolin . But, as you said, romance was very secondary to the overall plot in SA. I wasn't sure what to expect with Elantris, or how Brandon would do writing a more central love story. I went with: well, I haven't been disappointed yet, so I'll be hopeful. And I'm still not disappointed! @Botanica - beautiful picture!! -
Just had a thought - is there any possibility that Renarin would already know that Adolin had killed Sadeas due to his Truthwatcher abilities? I still don't really understand his abilities... so this could be totally wrong...

SPOILERS! ---Does Kaladin like Shallan, and Vice Versa?---
Tharatariel10 replied to ChullRider's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well said! And even if Kaladin had a wife or a love-interest who shared his every day duty, I mean, could he even handle that? I go back to the bridgemen. They are with Kaladin all the time, they share the most in his life (particularly Teft and Rock) and Kaladin still has qualms about them being where he cannot be, where he cannot protect them. When one dies, he takes full responsibility. So, regardless of a woman saying: "I want to stand by you, fight with you, fight for you, my life is mine to lose if it happens..." I think it would be too much for Kaladin. If anything were to happen to her (whoever she may be) he would never forgive himself and it might just break him. And, come on, doesn't Kaladin have enough to deal with?? Add all that to the good points you made about him unable to give more than protection (and some witty humor...and boots, if so demanded ;-) ) and I feel like we have made every argument under the sun why Kaladin may not be the Romeo of this story! ***I would like to point out that I am still in the camp of those who claim that Kaladin likes Shallan ...to a degree. I stand by my previous argument that this attraction may or may not be full on romantic, most likely it will turn out not to be, but that there is something there on his side. I would also like to add that I absolutely love love love Kaladin. He is definitely my top character and will always be the main character in my eyes, even if he shares the story with other people. Just my take. So just because I don't think he will necessarily end up in a romance does not in anyway mean that I think he doesn't deserve happiness or fulfillment. Just maybe not in that way... Whew! Just wanted to put that out there. I feel like my comments have seemed suspiciously anti-Kaladin. o.O*** Interesting that you have not won that argument. I would add that if there's one thing Kaladin has maintained throughout the books it's his guilt/responsibility complex. He is still fighting with the idea of "caring, but not too much." He can't seem to find the balance. Although he's learned much in the first two books of SA, that has remained. So, while he may at one point find a balance, if he does, it's going to be a while; that change will come slowly. So, I think it's a fair argument to say that he will always struggle with this to some degree. At what point does this allow for him to have a successful romance? Especially with someone who values independence as much as Shallan? Agreed! -
So! I am new here and I JUST read Elantris for the first time. (I realize, most of you have probably read it years ago and are on your 5th or one-hundred and fifth reading :-P) I have searched this forum topic and have not found a single thread pertaining to the romance in this book (if I missed it, please excuse my rookie mistake ;-) ) Let me just say how much I loved Sarene and Raoden's love story! It was refreshing and enjoyable throughout the book. Perhaps my favorite aspect of their romance is that you see both sides - particularly Raoden's perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed the little gem of him confessing to Galladon that what he wanted most in Elantris were Sarene's letters. I think this could have been cheesy if it didn't feel like a victory moment for Sarene. The fact that she battles with feelings of self-reproach, despair and being unwanted by men made his confession that much more powerful. It made me happy to think that - even without meeting her - he really did like her. I enjoyed that Raoden's identity was hidden from Sarene; the mystery was fun. I think typically, (maybe just in cheesy, chick-flicks) when one character is trying to keep his true identity secret from the other, it is usually that he has initial reasons for "spying" on the person in question. He is doing so to settle a bet, help a friend, win a trophy...whatever. And then, in the process, despite himself, he falls for the person he was deceiving. I thought it was a nice take that Raoden wanted to watch Sarene and be close to her because he liked her. (His reasons for keeping his identity secret were also more of a defensive nature, wanting to protect New Elantris, his people and her.) And thus we get all those beautiful little moments of him being proud of her intellect, her political skills, her courage, her kindness and really coming to love her even when she doesn't really know who he is. I absolutely loved seeing his side of the story. I also enjoyed the fact that it was not an "opposites attract" romance; everything about Sarene complimented Raoden. You can see that from when she first reorganizes the group of noblemen. You can see before they officially meet, how they would naturally love each other and work together. Even when Sarene is suspicious of Spirit while distributing food in Elantris, instead of frustration and annoyance on his side, he is amuse and proud of her. Her caution makes him love her more, even if it is directed at him. At the same time, his openness and honesty with her eventually opens the door to a more natural attraction when she enters Elantris as an "Elantrian." No battle of wills, no false-hatred, no question of does he like her? Does she like him? It just kind of happens. I think that's much more true to life. I could go on, but this post is getting really long...:-P Suffice it to say that overall, I thought it was a beautiful romance and it made this book that much more enjoyable. Thank you, Mr. Sanderson :-) Feel free to share your favorite Sarene & Raoden moments :-D

So, my first Sanderson book I read was The Way of Kings back in June, quickly followed by Words of Radiance, White Sand and I'm currently working on Elantris. My story goes like this: I happened upon Words of Radiance on vacation with my family last summer. My younger sister was reading it. I am generally very critical of books (yes, I judge books by their covers) and most of my reading is old-timey (Jane Austen, Dickens, Collins, Tolkien, etc.) so I wasn't sure. But I opened it up and read a couple excerpts and thought: hmm, I like the way this guy writes. So fast-forward to this June when I was looking for something fresh and new to read. My sister was like: "Hey, you may like this guy Brandon Sanderson. He wrote these books The Way of Kings, etc. etc. etc." (She was trying not to over-hype it I guess.) So I thought: hey, why not? Maybe I'll like it. It should be entertaining. ... ... Well, here I am. On a fan forum in less than one month after reading my first Sanderson novel! I think I devoured The Way of Kings in less than two weeks (keep in mind, life and such taking up most of my time.) I would read it every night until like 1am and every chance I got beside. I think I read Words of Radiance in about 5 days; one night staying up to about 2:45AM! Sooo, yeah, I'm a big fan. I can honestly say the Stormlight Archive is now my favorite book(s) of all time. i have never been so captivated by a story or loved characters so much. I cried, I was afraid, I laughed and best of all I cheered. Sanderson certainly knows how to write believable heroes! Thus far I'm very much enjoying Elantris and I'm looking forward to reading the Mistborn series after that. :-D

SPOILERS! ---Does Kaladin like Shallan, and Vice Versa?---
Tharatariel10 replied to ChullRider's topic in Stormlight Archive
Great post! Again, agreed that Adolin is awesome. I loved him from the beginning. I like what you point out about Adolin killing Sadeas. I hope that Adolin and Kaladin become closer in future books. I feel like their brotherhood/friendship could be really awesome if given time; they can help each other in so many ways. I like how things played out in WoR, but there's so much more that could be done. I think the point you make that Kaladin may relate most to Adolin's actions is interesting. We shall see... On completely different note, but more to the topic at hand: I was thinking about what @esamitch said about Kaladin not needing a love interest. That his character, his journey doesn't seem to be lacking because he doesn't have a lady in his life (all theories of Shaladin aside here.) My additional thought to support this is: could Kaladin really handle having a romantic love? I mean his whole complex of saving and protecting others at all costs, and his sense of depression at any failure would be amplified tremendously if he had a love interest. Goodness, if some recent recruit for Bridge Four dies on the battle field, he feels that he has failed that person. He has regret, sorrow and all that that implies. Now imagine he has a romantic interest in someone. Good lord! He'd go nuts! He would have to protect her at all cost and any possibility of her being in danger and him not being able to help or protect her would eat away at him. Now consider Shallan. The very hint that Adolin ever betrays of wanting to protect her and keep her safe and she freaks out. She is paranoid of the idea that someone will lock her away, even if it is to protect her. Now, arguably, Kaladin may relate to her desire for freedom - I think someone mentioned that in this thread. But if he loved her, truly, his first instinct would be to protect her. Soooo, I can foresee a terrible combination here. Not only would Kaladin having a deep, love-interest be challenging, but that love-interest being Shallan would be even harder, and the likelihood of Shallan returning this love and accepting his need to protect her is even MORE of a stretch. Just my thoughts... -
I think I'll do the Dalinar with little Adolin and Renarin ;-) ...that is...if my freakin' printer worked!

Hey - so I'm new to the forums and I've actually been working on Stormlight Archive music. I'm having a blast and really enjoying the creative process of composing themes. Currently I have: Tien's Theme: Kaladin Remembers and Veden Lullaby. I'm working on an overall theme for The Way of Kings (otherwise Dalinar's theme) and one for Shallan/Kharbranth. However, it's me (voice), my random assortment of recorders, whistles, flutes, a piano/keyboard and Audacity. I'm curious, @AndrewStirlingMacDonald if you use a program like Finale/Sibelius or if it's all you playing live? And what program do you use to record? I'm totally new to this. Even though I've shared these on the SA threads, I guess this may be a better thread in which to post them. Here are my two completed works thus far. Encouragement and recording advice appreciated!

This is a great topic! So many interesting points! Does anyone else enjoy the parallel situation of Kaladin and Adolin? Maybe I'm just making it up: Both characters have light-eyed men in their lives who they know to have deceived and betrayed. For Kaladin: it is Amaram (among others...but let's keep it to Amaram); for Adolin: Sadeas. They both have a vengeful hate for these men. Both of them try to fulfill their vengeance through a duel; both fail to do so for multiple reasons. Although you can argue that Kaladin is never really given the opportunity to physically harm Amaram - instead he allows Dalinar's acceptance that Amaram is deceitful to in some ways justify his vengeance - I think it could be argued that by this point in WoR Kaladin has already changed much of his anger towards Elhokar. He now realizes that Elhokar is to blame for Roshone coming to Hearthstone, thus his brother going into the army, thus Kaladin being betrayed by Amaram. So his desire for vengeance takes a turn against Elhokar. And what does he do? Well, he realizes that his desire to kill because he hates someone is not compatible with his desire to protect. He chooses honor over vengeance. Adolin, on the otherhand, is given a similar opportunity to kill the man whom he blames for so much trouble in his life, to take the life of a man whom he hates. And he does. Now, I agree with @maxal up there (somewhere...) that he does this is a moment of weakness, not really knowing what he does. He sort of loses it for and lets his emotions cloud his judgment. So, his culpability is debatable (and let's face it, aren't we glad SOMEONE killed Sadeas??) I do think he will feel immense sorrow and guilt, and I am pretty sure he will not hide behind another man (definitely not Kaladin) but come forth and admit his failure. Which will be incredibly interesting and I can't wait! To add to the original topic - I doubt that Adolin would suffer Kaladin to take the blame for Sadeas' murder because of his strange liking/loyalty to Kaladin. Think of when he stayed in prison while Kaladin was there. He wouldn't even allow Kaladin to suffer alone because he recognized he owed his life to his bravery. Adolin's sense of compassion and honor demanded that he share imprisonment with him; even if it was just to make a statement that Kaladin's punishment was uncalled for. In light of that example of Adolin's character, I think that it would be a difficult turn for him to then suddenly allow Kaladin to take the blame for his own crimes, which is completely false and unjust!

Favourite Stormlight Archive qoute
Tharatariel10 replied to Asasasyn in White's topic in Stormlight Archive
@ErklittTotally the first one I thought of!! Haha That is one of my absolute favorite moments/scenes in WoR. Of course, it is slightly overshadowed by the ultimate Kaladin scene at the end, when he says the third ideal. Another one: "You sent him to the skies to die, assassin"..."But the skies are mine. I claim them, as I now claim your life." GAAH! SO GOOD! BTW, I'm not sure if that quote is precise, I don't have my book on hand. If anyone wants to correct me feel free. -
SPOILERS! ---Does Kaladin like Shallan, and Vice Versa?---
Tharatariel10 replied to ChullRider's topic in Stormlight Archive
@maxal Well thank you, clearly, I think about this too much. And, clearly, I'm in good company on this forum! I love Adolin as a character. I have liked him from the beginning. He has flaws, of course, but ultimately he is as straight as they come; I particularly appreciate his undying loyalty, obedience and love for his father, Dalinar. I think just the fact that he has no desire to be highprince if it means his father is going to step-down shows he has more love for his father and less desire for glory. So yeah, how does this square with Shallan? I also love Shallan, I think she's a very interesting, great character, and I still don't think we know where she's going. I agree with pretty much all of this ^^. I think she's weaving (haha, lightweaver) a complicated net of relationships and loyalties in the end of WoR. So I have no idea what she will do with it in future books! It makes me very sad to think that she will probably hurt Adolin since I think he really does like her from the start. SO - what about the whole Adolin brutally murdering Sadeas thing? I mean, Adolin, the straight-arrow, succumbing to the hatred, vengeance, anger he feels towards Sadeas in a moment of weakness to murder the highprince. Don't get me wrong, I think I secretly was like: FINALLY SOMEONE KILLED THAT JERK AAUGH!! But then, what will become of Adolin? Now he's a murderer! Although we can argue (rightly) that Shallan murdered in self-defense and in defense of others, I still wonder if this could be an experience that could unite them. She may be the only one who truly understands Adolin. His probable feelings of horror and guilt will mirror her own - if she's true to herself. Maybe she'll be there for him in this need? Not sure if that supports your point @maxal that Adolin deserves someone who will look to his needs... -
SPOILERS! ---Does Kaladin like Shallan, and Vice Versa?---
Tharatariel10 replied to ChullRider's topic in Stormlight Archive
I agree that Kaladin has some feelings toward Shallan (which he is more or less aware of...probably less), though I feel like it could have two conclusions: 1) Kaladin admitting to himself that he likes Shallan, but totally giving way to Adolin & Shallan since he wouldn't step into that relationship (at least, as it is presented thus far.) I think this has already been said, but I really think that Kaladin would not step over Adolin. 2) Kaladin's initial interest/attraction to Shallan develops into a friendship. Almost like a brother-sister bond. As far as Shallan, I really don't think she cares for Kaladin at all in the romantic sense. She may be intrigued by him (more often annoyed by him) but it seems clear that even despite their time in the chasms, she in the end shows more attraction for Adolin. Even if Adolin weren't in the picture, in the end of WoR (after the chasm experience) Shallan and Kaladin have almost no conversation. No moment to share or relate that they are both Radiants; Kaladin is like: oh yeah, Shallan's a Radiant. I figured. And then Shallan doesn't even seem to have any reaction to Kaladin's powers. Then he leaves - no tears, no good-byes, no inner monologue of pining-potential-crush-love for either character. So, if Sanderson does create a love triangle, I feel like the "love" will be from Kaladin's side (and probably not acted upon) rather than Shallan's. I notice people were quoting when Kaladin sees Shallan's smile and thinks it's the most beautiful thing. I felt like that could be genuine attraction, but almost more in the sense of awe and wonder. Here Kaladin has never been able to smile in the face of darkness and sadness. Especially in WoR it gets harder and harder for him to be positive at all. So the fact that Shallan has seen and lived horrors similar to his own, yet, smiles...is incredibly beautiful to him; precisely because he is so unable to do so. Deep down he wants to overcome but doesn't know how; Shallan shows him it's possible. Another thought: I feel like Kaladin, Son of Honor, would have a hard time relating on a deeper level to Shallan, the Lightweaver creating lies with her powers. I know other posts support the whole opposites attract idea, but I am not so sure.... For one thing, Kaladin cannot abide deception of any kind, and I feel like he would resent that Shallan's radiant powers revolve around her ability to deceive - and manipulate. Even though he's initially taken with her ability to smile in the face of darkness and despair, this is ultimately her lying to herself (I think) and trying to avoid truth. Whereas, Kaladin is always fighting for truth. His whole hatred of lighteyes is based on the fact that he has been deceived and betrayed by them throughout his life. They were never honest, they always hid behind a charade of honor but secretly succumbed to greed and evil. Ultimately, he abhors lies. Shallan on the other hand, lives lies. She is in some sense a deceiver - even if she uses this for good. Because of this very fundamental difference, I don't think Kaladin could ever respect her. He may be attracted to her, but deep down his honor would always conflict with her lightweaving abilities. That was more long-winded than I wanted. Hope that makes sense! -
Thank you @mirahound - I am working on a Shallan theme from The Way of Kings which is a more lively, mischievous tune which, I think, is how we see her initially. But I have used similar chord-structure, tonality to the lullaby which means I could easily transition into the other. Haha - hey, this is just my headcanon played out loud. You're free to have your own! I'd be interested to know if your melody is major or minor? Because I originally wanted mine to be a major melody - I thought that would be incredibly ironic considering the circumstance in which its sung in the books. But I couldn't get one to fit in my head.

Tien's Theme: Kaladin Remembers
Tharatariel10 replied to Tharatariel10's topic in Stormlight Archive
Wow, thanks! My sister @esamitch told me the same thing - you're right! Honestly, I just got sick of editing it! Haha again - not a movie-maker. I have no patience. The reason I kept it is because I was more concerned about getting the quotes to go with specific points of the music. So I sacrificed readability for drama...Thank you for the critique though. Maybe I'll get better at creating movies :-P Incidentally, the two I'm working on now are an over-arching theme for The Way of Kings, interchangeably Dalinar's theme (exciting, "hero' music!) I'm also trying to create a more lively Shallan theme that can easily relate to the lullaby (musically speaking), but is from when you first meet her in SA when she enters Kharbranth. Hooray! That's what I was going for! You guys are amazing! Thanks for being so encouraging!- 9 replies

Here is my first musical composition for the Stormlight Archive. This is what I imagined for Tien's theme, which would (theoretically) be used for Kaladin's memories throughout The Way of Kings. The first melody you hear (A section) is for Tien - it's meant to be song-like and sad. The B section has some major chords and is more or less Kaladin's hero theme. It brings a sense of determination and resolve to the overall "Tien theme" which seems appropriate for Kaladin. My goal was to create a theme for both characters that brings together the emotion of their story. This is all on piano - although feel free to imagine a full orchestra! :-D WhenIf I figure out a program to make that happen, it will definitely be on my list of things to do! (Please excuse the "lameness" of the video. I only have Windows Live Movie Maker and for anyone who is familiar with it: you know my pain. For those of you who don't: it stinks. But, hey, I'm a musician not a film maker :-P) Enjoy!
