Or maybe Elohkar dies and Dalinar becomes king?
-
From the site rules (emphasis added). And if you read that more recent thread all the way through, you would see that the conclusion was Braize cannot be Yolen. If Frost never left Yolen then he would know that he is still on Yolen. What Frost and Hoid say in the letters makes no sense if Braize == Yolen. Which was discussed in that thread.

My thoughts on some of the characters...And do share your opinion too!
Argel replied to Ariyar's topic in Stormlight Archive
It's probably frowned on in Alethi society, but I think you are forgetting Dalinar's position. He can get away with a lot more than most due to being second in line to the throne. Her book will be in the front five, so not a flashback book. Only the back five are flashback books. -
How does the Final Empire compare to historical empires?

How do Koloss, Kandra, and Inquisitors not guarantee a victory for TLR?? -
No need to necro this thread, especially since it has mostly been debunked in more recent threads.

I can't. Readers will be expecting a better ending than that. Maybe at the end of SA5, but not at the end of SA10. If they drive Odium away, that would be different. Regarding compatibility (emphasis added):

We do know it was after Gavilar's assasination though (see below). It was also stated to be years before that 500 day chart. So likely within three years of Gavilar's assassination. Source: http://www.theoryland.com/intvsresults.php?kw=Taravangian+Nightwatcher

Maybe there is some octal (base 8) , decimal (base 10) and/or hexadecimal (base 16) play going on here: 020 == 16 == 0x10 0400 == 256 == 0x100 02000 == 1024 == 0x400 (where a leading 0 indicates octal and a leading 0x indicates hex)

What he cares about is irrelevant. In a true death-before-dishonor society Sebarial would never have even made it to high prince (rough equivalent to a daimyo). You should check out Shogun for a crash course on feudal Japan. It has a couple nitpicks, like even mentioning ninjas and using hari kari instead of seppuku, but overall packs the most info about Japan's culture into a book than anything else out there. https://www.amazon.com/Shogun-Asian-Saga-Book-1-ebook/dp/B002UBRFDC/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=#nav-subnav

I thought the Bridge 4 stuff in TWoK dragged on too much, so Kaladin was not as interesting to me until later on, and more so in WoR. Shallan is my favorite from both books. Hard for me to say after that. Kaladin could have been close, but that whole period that he lost Syl was just so blah (except when he visits Zahel). The duel of course was really great, definitely made Adolin more interesting. I'm looking forward to Kaladin in SA3. -
DragonSteel is supposed to be the "origin" story, so most likely Mistborn Era 4 or possibly Elantris. Though so far Elantris has been a single novel, and is well known for that -- not sure fans will want him to go too epic with the series. Mistborn on the other hand has been advertised at three eras for a long time and then he slipped a new era in with the W&W books, so now four eras. It's ambitious in its own way and we've already seen a lot of Cosmere stuff going on there. It really feels like the setting Brandon likes to play in the most (out of the Cosmere).

I think there is a WoB that a perfectly cut gem would not leak.

Any chance for a new section for crazy, highly unlikely Cosmere theories? For example, the one about Harmony picking up a shard on Roshar -- we know Brandon wants SA to stand on its own (see quote below), so no major Cosmere crossovers, which makes it DOA. And the one from a month or two ago about spiking Lift to make her even more awesome -- fun, but even less likely to happen. It could be a good place to discuss fun stuff like Scadrial vs. Roshar, etc. Basically, try and put the "fan", fun, and silly stuff in a separate forum, leaving Cosmere Theories for serious discussion. Brandon wants SA to stand on its own, so there will be no major Cosmere crossovers. I can't find the source now, but the question was about his biggest concern writing Cosmere (or maybe SA) and he mentions slipping too much Cosmere into SA, because it needs to stand on it's own. He also mentioned he was not as worried about that for Mistborn. Edit: Found it: From JordanCon: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J43km7wrrZnOuM2WJe2DpBsk_C0E6yLJ8bDxqfen-P4/view

We do not know if that is true. The in-book reason is that other languages were not granular/descriptive enough to represent what what he wanted to write, so he created a language that was. He may have calculated how long it would take them to decipher it and considered it acceptable. Or he may have been too focused to even think about that. I'm curious why you are associating knowledge with more investiture? Nightblood has 1000 breathes and his knowledge is sorely lacking. I am not sure we have seen any examples of gaining knowledge beyond ascending, and I doubt the Nightwatcher is gifting that much out. Why couldn't he? One of the worlds best libraries (if not the best) is located in his kingdom. That's why Jasnah was there. That information could also be there. Additionally, he was involved in conspiracies at the time of Gavilar's assassination, and we do not know how much they knew at that time. Also, Cultivation or Odium could be passing on the information to him, both of which have been discussed in the forums (especially Odium). It's also possible that humans cannot normally process so much information -- not everyone is a grand master at Chess, seeing double digit number of moves ahead, which seems to be the analogy.

Pretty sure there is a WoB out there about Rosharans having some Cosmere knowledge. The Heralds obviously would. There are also world hoppers, the Ghostbloods (don't forget Mraize is from Roshar), Gavilar who we believe had the visions (and T and Gavilar appear to have been co-conspirators before the assassination). So I think it just shows Mr T was cosmere aware. In fact, The WoB I'm thinking of may have been about this specific quote or Mr. T and The Diagram.

Yeah, "earth" is really a generic name. It could also be a translation to English for the reader. If you think about it, every early civilization out there would likely have a generic name for their planet because at the time they wouldn't be aware that it's even a planet. It only becomes an issue when they learn about other planets.

What the Hell Shallan? Also Kaladin.
Argel replied to NathanielHellman's topic in Stormlight Archive
The dumbest bodyguard ever is the one that prevents vital information from making it to the people that need it. Like I said, he could have taken her off to the side and conferred with Navani. Which he ended up doing, but only after Shallan got under his skin so much that he should have been read the riot act for conduct unbecoming an officer. But speaking of dumb, Kaladin ends up putting people that want to kill the king as bodyguards for the king, and he almost participated in the assassination. I like Kaladin, but he was far from an exemplary officer in WoR. Edit: Actually, he was an accomplice, since he left Moash and the others in place. He just wises up at the last minute, but if he had turned them in there would have been no threat to the king.- 25 replies

The obvious comparison is feudal Japan, but we don't have an equivalent to Samurai or the Code of Busihido on Roshar. If the culture was that heavy into death before dishonor, than Dalinar would have lost significant influence after the heavy losses when Sadeas tried to wipe him out. Sebarial pretty much proves the point -- paying fines to avoid combat would be intolerable in a death before dishonor type society. Vorin religion doesn't really match up either. The Alethi culture is feudal Europe with hints of feudal Japan. Either of you played the Legend of the Five Rings pencil and paper role-playing game? Or read Shogun?

My thoughts on some of the characters...And do share your opinion too!
Argel replied to Ariyar's topic in Stormlight Archive
And he might say it's just too much hassle to deal with. Plus, it just does not appear to be his style. Also, Palona is Herdazian and Shallan has Herdazian ancestors. That may just be a soft spot for him. It would have been interesting to see how things played out if she was not part Herdazian and not from Jah Kaved. Or see what his POV was on it. Think of it this way -- he gets to remain neutral in the Sadeas vs. Dalinar polical war but now has an avenue to build ties to the Kohlin family outside of it. From that perspective, she's a low risk, long term investment who also works as a clerk for him. Except Sebarial is never portrayed as playing the political game, and Shallan doesn't come accross that way either. I think they both had enough of an understanding on that point to avoid being too way. Note though that Sebarial did probe her with a few questions (e.g. about Adolin). He also doesn't need to do that on that trip and probabyl expects Palona to keep an eye on her. There's also the possibility he knows more about what's going on. I think it's a long shot, but the "trick of the light" comment could have deeper meaning. I think the implication was Pattern was too frightened to be easy to order around, and Shallan was under too much pressure (you know, saving the expedition from certain death) to make pretending to freak out over it worthwhile. Think about how much time would be lost if everyone there thought it was a voidbringer. They would not just leave it alone. By saying it was her spren she diffused the situation. Also, she had revealed she was proto-KR to Dalinar, so had finally crossed that line, making it easier to cross it again.] It's the father telling the son the way things are. I didn't mind. Elohkar has put Dalinar is serious danger due to his paranoia, and Dalinar was making a point about that. To someone acting more like spoiled child. And Elokhar had just lectured him about how that relationship would be inappropriate right before Dalinar started in on him. I don't think talking about it was going to be an option. Elohkar needed a wake up call. Sounds like you are not aware that Eshoani will be getting her own book. That alone implies she will break out of it. And if the theory that each main character will represent a KR order pans out, then she has to break out of it. IIRC, her book will likely be SA4, with Szeth getting SA5. -

Argel replied to NathanielHellman's topic in Stormlight Archive
But ultimately she was legit, and part of Kaladin's job is to figure that out. And part of his job is to not lose his temper like that. Might be poor behavior for Shallon, but it was unprofessional of Kaladin and he should have received a dressing down on it. I agree, Shallan did not help her case, but Kaladin should have moved her off to a waiting area and let e.g. Navani check in on it further later on. But it was clear the odds of it playing out that way were not going to happen. That to me was Kaladin overstepping his position- 25 replies

Argel replied to NathanielHellman's topic in Stormlight Archive
No, he wasn't. Shallan really is Adolin's betrothed and Kaladin was about to deny her access to see Adolin, prevent her from bringing news of Jasnah, etc. She had every reason to get angry. Also, she's not an officer. If she wants to be annoying as hell, that's her prerogative. Kaladin on the other hand is an on-duty officer, and should have been behaving better. Made for a fun scene though. Edit: Well, there is the trope where two people that argue all the time end up becoming lovers.- 25 replies

I'm hoping the nightwatcher boon/bane is undone so she starts mentally maturing. I'm also having a hard time with an entire book dedicated to her as she is now. This isn't a young adult series, Alcatraz, etc. The novella in the CC (Arcanum Unbounded) may convince me otherwise though.
