"If you missed the first two Stormlight Archive recap articles" - three, not two

"Between Szeth's flashbacks and the apparent directly Kaladin and Szeth are headed going into Wind and Truth" - is this meant to be "danger" instead of "directly"? I can't parse this sentence.

"delusional enough to be think himself" - "to think", without "be"

On the second it was meant to be "apparent direction". Thanks for the catches!

O well, you have not touched the big question. Is it worth it, if you already have the three previous ones?

I think the answer to that will vary wildly by person, so it's difficult to answer. It's a function of how much you like the story, how much you might like the changes (I think everyone would agree it was changed for the better, but not everyone would agree on the extent to which those changes improve the story), how those opinions translate to money you're willing to spend, how much a published prose version in the coming years might change the equation for you, etc.

In my opinion, definitely worth it.

    Strongly agree.

In terms of movie stuff, I think Brandon has a pretty good idea of when a movie would come out. In February, Brandon talked about the future naming conventions of Era 3 and beyond in relation to a new Mistborn movie coming out in about 3 years, so I think the process is farther along that we know. (Although I'm still putting my bets on a Dragonsteel 2022 Mistborn movie announcement, with a potential Skyward series announcement before then.)

Harriet announced the Wheel of Time series was in the works a bit too early, which left an awkwardly long period of time where we knew something was happening and knew nothing about it. I'm kind of hoping that Sanderson is that far along (or further) and we don't have to play that game. That when an announcement happens it will have some meat to it, and we're not wondering a year later if there will ever be more news. :D

It does seem like things are further along than the "shopping around" phase. Hopefully we'll find out more by the end of the year.

Reading between the lines... the WoB mentioned there talks about fantasy TV shows, which is what he's always said he wants to do Stormlight as... so I don't know.

I THINK that's only because the previous question (asked by myself actually) inadvertently pulled the conversation towards Stormlight Archive. I had asked about the possibility of a show getting ahead of the books and gave Stormlight as an example. I figured if I used Mistborn as an example he would take the easy way out by pointing at the two finished Eras... In other words, easily dodge the basis of the question instead of confront the possibility I was trying to get at.

Anyways, I gave that Stormlight television show example, so I think when the conversation turned back to film/shows he naturally drifted that way.

Brandon has been pretty adamant about making Mistborn happen first I'd say. DMG (who had all the cosmere rights, and then was left with only Stormlight) kept wanting to push for a Stormlight show and Brandon just didn't think that was the right place to start. In early 2021 he wrote his own Mistborn screenplay, as if to make that point more strongly and get some traction where others were failing. @Use the Falchion points out a case of him offhandedly supposing a Mistborn show, and I'm pretty sure there are other similar cases.

I know he has gone a bit back and forth on what format to do Mistborn in, even with some strange ideas about doing a "move - show - movie" for the first three books. I'm skeptical about such an experimental format, and I've admittedly never understood why he thought that made any sense... :D At the end of the day, I don't think the format is something he would fight very strongly over. It doesn't seem THAT important to his vision. Mistborn could work as a movie or a show. I think if someone is willing to work with him on his other demands, the format (show vs movie) is not something he would consider a deal breaker.

The Shard logo looks a bit clunky on the site itself, but I do like the look of it and the other two are fantastic. I imagine that fixing the look of the whole site is a work in progress, so I'm not to worried about it. Great job!

Yeah, using it on the current site design is just a temporary-ish necessity. We didnt want to hold up the logos for a year while we try to get our act together on a forum redesign.

Sounds great. Do we know anything about Dawnshard being available as a stand-alone book for non-kickstarter backers?

Brandon has said they're hoping to make it available for general purchase before RoW releases, but not until after they've sent it out to Kickstarter backers. So hopefully it will be up for purchase very late October or early November for anyone.

Awesome summary! I was wondering if this is only going to be a four part series will it just end in two weeks? I know it is a lot of work to do, but I love reading these and they remind me of the common Tor articles that they release on the cosmere!

The third will cover other notable characters and it will be out this Wednesday.

The fourth will cover notable groups as well as a few notable outstanding mysteries, and that will be out this next Saturday. :)

If Brandon completes ROW on July 10th, why can't we read it on July 11th?  What if we pay up front for the hardback and the e-book and they just ship me the hardback when it's ready?

That's just Brandon's involvement. There's the copyedit, the gamma read, and maybe another draft along those lines? I'm sure a lot of the artwork is still in progress. I imagine that the entire book, put together and looking good, is important to Brandon.

And that's to say nothing of the publisher's interests. I doubt they would be happy with that idea. :)

  8. @Pagerunner dishing out ice cold truth.

I won't be surprised if he's running behind on Lost Metal, but I'm also willing to bet he gets it done in 2021 no matter what. I get the sense that he's genuinely interested in wrapping up ongoing projects for one. And if it doesn't happen before Stormlight 5 it means he'll need to directly follow it up with all of Era 3. I just can't see him doing that to himself? I think WORST CASE would be that he swaps it with Skyward 4 and has to write it second half of 2021.

Won't at all disagree that this would be a deviation from several years of pushing it off, or that skepticism isn't reasonable. (at the least) Call me an optimist. Just what my gut says.

I've been skeptical about the novella as well, but we'll know more about that soon enough at least. I think you're right that States of the Sanderson and random social media comments are hard promises while this Kickstarter 100% is. And Brandon's not one to break promises. So I'm not really concerned that the novella won't happen (though I was prior to Kickstarter details), or that it will get delayed significantly. If anything, my concern there would be that it delays Skyward 3 (and then we're back to the Lost Metal conversation.)

That was exciting news (and cool to see him answer those questions more or less live)! I do wonder if he could crunch The Lost Metal to come out in 2021 with Skyward 3. ...I don't think it would be healthy, but I do wonder if it's possible.

They ARE rather short novels... Three months to write, three months to revise, three to six months to get it from there to boookshelves? Seems possible. Not sure how long previous Era 2 books have taken to write.

  10. I've long been expecting a 2021 release, and while he keeps insisting 2020 there's less and less time for him to convince me that's true. XD I expect he'll finish in early 2020 and release in early 2021.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if, when he realizes it will be late, he uses the momentum to crank out a novella. Sounds like Rock novella may take priority over Wandersail? Rock is involved with the main characters, so that could be really nice as a tie between 3 and 4, with the time jump happening. I'm happy with either though. Presumably if he did that before finishing SA4, or right after SA4 completion, they could get it published by the end of 2020?

I'm assuming he will spend the rest of 2020 writing Lost Metal and Skyward 3 & 4. Not sure which he'll prioritize, but I assume the goal would be a Fall 2021 (or earlier) release for Lost Metal and Skyward 3. So 2021 will probably be a busy year for us! Though perhaps one of those will slip to 2022, with subsequent SA4 drafts to be written.

  11. I think Brandon/Peter have been emphatic that Cohesion = make rocky into goop = a Willshaper thing. (i.e., Stormfather was wrong)

@Pagerunner has a fantastic analysis of Cohesion and Tension here:

I've added some opinions of my own just now about what Dalinar was doing in the scene with the temple/statue. (among other things) Too long to post here, so you'll have to read it there if interested. :)

How do you claim an article?

Just put your name in the "Claimed By" column on this spreadsheet. :) Thanks @Ark1002!

Edit: Oh, I noticed you did this, but had to add the thing you wanted. That sheet actually has a few tabs in it. It opens to the Stormlight tab, but you wanted the Mistborn tab. I moved your name to the right spot. Sorry for the confusion.
