Interesting, thank you... I suppose I shouldn't find it too surprising that so many people went for archives. Those abilities looked quite powerful, especially considering they didn't have many downsides.

Yeah reading the rules I didn't expect there to be an abundance of PC masters... I'll need to read up on the last game... I want to know which fields people went for previously.
-
I think that if the master of the field is a PC, they may choose what ability the person gets. But if it is an NPC, which I imagine many of them will be, then it is definitely random yes.

First of all, I'm glad you extended the deadline. I was worried we would have too few people. Although I will give a small word of warning, you are placing the game start right before the start of AP tests. This may affect some people's activity in the early game. To be honest with myself though, it probably won't reduce my activity very much at all Finally, I've PMed you a recording for talent pipes. Looking forward to a kingkiller game.

I was in suspense about who would win but then Felt cut all the tension... I for one expect the outcome of this game to be illuminating however. Lots of people are gravitating towards this thread, so I hope it doesn't become too divisive... Sometimes people can be abrasive you know. But hopefully we can progress past that. And adhere to the posting rules, which really transform the game. I remember last time I played, posting came pretty rapid-fire. I'm done now. Allow me to transport myself to the door.

Another one of these??? Well, I guess I'll take part... Hmm... I shall empower the surge of division and unleash its destructive potential on cohesion. 1. Adhesion -- 4 2. Gravitation -- 9 3. Division -- 8 4. Abrasion -- 6 5. Progression -- 5 6. Illumination -- 6 7. Transformation -- 7 8. Transportation -- 4 9. Cohesion -- 1

Good day. Glad to have another sharder here. Also I recommend you do take the cookie. The cautioning of BrightnessRadiant and Headshot are completely unfounded. The cookies are delicious.

Okay... I've finished reading your initial post. You raise some... Interesting points. I always figured Renarin's future sight was a resonance between his two surges. Not surgebinding in of itself, but related. A bit like the photographic memory of all lightweavers (not related to surges), or perhaps also similar to that time in the arena where Kaladin felt he could have closed his eyes and still fought just as well. And, in truth, I still think there's a good chance that this is a resonance. But... The way you present the details, you highlight a second possibility to me. This could actually be the influence of a hostile shard, namely Odium (or perhaps more specifically the unmade responsible for prophetic death rattles, moleach). On the other hand, it is worth noting that even when Renarin is completely succumbed to his vision, he is expressing fear and describing the everstorm as terrible. If his visions came from something of evil intent, why would he express such horror in the everstorm, even after totally losing control to the visions? I'm also wondering about Sanderon's "evil grin" before that RAFO. I can't help but suspect that this isn't a resonance, but neither is it the influence of Odium... It is something entirely different. Hmmmm.... I would say this is cultivation's influence, but I'm convinced that Cultivation's primary agenda is being served by Taravangian.

Your Least Favorite Cosmere Story And Why
DrakeMarshall replied to Stonesinew134's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Going to have to go with Elantris. It was one of Sanderson's earliest books so I think that may explain it. It's not that Elantris was bad. On the contrary, it was still a good read. His other books are just spectacular, so a book that is merely good falls at the bottom of the ranks. Well of Ascension might actually be one of my favorite books. The ending made up for whatever pacing was in it earlier. -
All Rosharans once like the Shin?
DrakeMarshall replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Stormlight Archive
I believe that Sanderson has confirmed somewhere that highstorms existed on Roshar before the shattering... But I'd agree that the traits in most Roshar inhabitants are very likely a response to the highstorms, yes. -
Well, transferring a nahel bond is probably incredibly difficult with hemalurgy... But it is also probably possible, just difficult. But to a hamster? In theory, that might still work... But... Right after the hamster received the bond, it would break. The nahel bond is a symbiotic relationship, and spren receive sapience from humans in the tradeoff. A hamster isn't sapient, so probably the spren would die if it bonded to a hamster.
-
I'd agree that the act of a human perceiving the spren fundamentally alters the spren, because spren are fundamentally beings created by human perception. But when a spren is in the nahel bond, that actually gives it some level of sapience. So... I would like to suggest that a spren with a strong nahel bond is actually fully capable of perceiving itself, and thus measuring it won't really affect it. Not very much, anyway. A dead spren however... Well the measurement theory may have some merit in this case. Since the spren are no longer self aware (being effectively "dead"), they are much more influenced by external measurements then they were prior to the bond being broken. I'd guess that's why a dead shardblade always has a single shape, where a bonded spren can choose to manifest in any shape they choose. Once they are dead, people see them as a sword, and so they can only ever be a sword. If the spren were alive, it could consciously alter itself to become a spear or a shield or something else, but since its dead, it can only be a sword. It wonder... If my conjectures are correct, that implies that it is theoretically possible for someone who carries a dead shardblade to force it to transform into a spear or something. If they somehow willed it to transform into a shard spear instead of a shard blade, it might transform. I'm guessing nobody discovered this simply because they don't understand how shadblades work (after all, for most of the post-recreance timeline, people believed that the gemstone on a shardblade was an integral part).

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
DrakeMarshall replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted. All things random act in you're favor. Unfortunately, very few things in the world are true random. Quantum physics tends to have some true random features, but nothing large-scale does really. So... What does that look like? Quantum luck? The only effect of this that you might notice is that the probabilities for radioactive decay near you are skewed. So, if you somehow came in contact with a large amount of a radioactive substance, it would, against all odds, not decay in your presence, and thus you and everyone else wouldn't get radiation poisoning. Which I guess is kind of a cool power. But even then, you're radiation immunity only functions at school, since that is the only place your "luck" applies. I suppose the other "true random" thing you might be able to notice is the location of an electron with respect to the atomic nucleus of an insulator... So insulators tend to be polarized in you're favor. Hm... I guess that means you also never get a static shock at your school anymore? So. That is your wish granted. Scientifically. Anyway, your bane is that you are now dyslexic. If by wishing for "luck in school" you hoped you would be getting better grades, that may have backfired... I wish to no longer need sleep. -
I like you're thoughts on measuring... That could be something. On the other hand, I'm not sure if measurement applies to these spren. Normal spren change predictably. They follow fixed laws, and when measured, they don't change. Not all spren are normal. Humans gain the surges from the nahel bond... Spren gain sapience. That lets them change in ways that aren't predictable. I doubt that measuring Syl would affect her in any way, but probably measuring a windspren would affect it. I suspect the change in the spren came as their loss of sapience. Their sapience depends on the bond, and the bond was broken. The only way to save the dead spren would be to give them a new bond. It is possible that they are beyond help because the radiants who initially bonded them are now dead... But I suspect that with some effort, a dead shardblade could be revived. Someone would probably need to figure out what order the dead blade belonged to, and take the oaths of that order. So, yes, I believe someone might save one of the spren in a shardblade sometime (it's been theorized Adolin will do this, and that seems possible if by no means certain). But seeing that on a large scale might prove difficult, because most of the people currently in possession of a dead shardblade probably wouldn't make very good radiants.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
DrakeMarshall replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
The nightwatcher steps down. Drake momentarily ascends to the position of nightwatcher, grinning manically. Listening attentively for a wish... Staccato looks on in horror as he realizes what he has done by granting this wish. "I wish to know the true name of shshshshshshshsh and not be rendered mad in the process." Aha! I know just the bane for you... "Grante--" Suddenly, a stranger jumps forward in between Staccato and Drake-turned-nightwatcher and grants Staccato's wish. What? What is this sorcery! Ultimately, it doesn't matter. All this windrunner fellow has done is switched himself out with Staccato... He shall receive my bane, then. Muahahahahah... "You're wish is granted. Brandon Sanderson somehow discovers how to use cosmere magic on earth. In an accident involving hemalurgy, he ends up turning a stranger into a hemalurgically deranged mutant. That stranger is you. In part because he feels responsible for you, and in part to cover it up, he ends up adopting you. It soon becomes evident that the process cannot be reversed without killing you. He is kind to you, but you aren't ever allowed to leave or go outside, being a hemalurgically deranged mutant and all. If you escaped you would probably be captured and dissected or something." I wish for prescience. I'll also throw in the wish that I don't receive Taravangian's bane, if just because I'd prefer something original. -
^me too... If they were short enough, the new mechanics would definitely make up for potential imbalances that make the game a bit unfair. Plus, the possibility of test games sounds extremely useful in crafting a more balanced game... It would let one test mechanics they aren't sure about before running some massive LG.

*grins evilly* I admit I'm tempted to grant this wish and thus be the person who subsequently has to grant my own future wish. But I won't break things like that. -

theory Theory: Roshar's Afterlife and the Tranquiline Halls
DrakeMarshall replied to FeatherWriter's topic in Stormlight Archive
I mean I'm pretty sure the voidbringers draw on Odium... It is implied that a highstorm and everstorm have opposite investitures, so probably they don't come from the same shard. But about all this, I had a thought which may suggest that Odium is indeed messing with the normal afterlife process. See, Odium is the intent of "divine wrath." And, in a lot of religions... Divine wrath tends to be described in terms of the afterlife. Divine wrath is often described in the context of hell. So... The shard of hell, putting people through unpleasantness after death? That seems to match its intent perfectly. Which is a little scary for the people of Roshar... Still, it is very likely that if this is true, then in a later book, the afterlife will be restored to how it was supposed to be in Adolnasium's time.- 37 replies
