Are Splinters tied to their world?
CaptainRyan replied to TwelfthOfSnackTime's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I am not sure we can conclusively say that the tether is due to Shardic Investiture. As far as I know there is no canonical reason yet for the tether - only speculation. -
Yeah, go for it! Though please do provide a picture of your own if you get it right!

So, my guess is that it is a picture of the ring Kaladin was tied to when he was strung up during a highstorm in Sadeas' camp. I will work on a drawing and post it soon. I am at work atm so it might take me a bit but I promise to get one up as soon as I can!

Hoid Theory 16729438 (Acronym, and height)
CaptainRyan replied to Aliroz-The-Confused's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Quick correction: This was changed with the release of Mistborn: Secret History. Hoid used the Well of Ascension to arrive on Scadrial and obtained Lerasium right after getting there. He then left Luthadel and headed off to the Terris Dominance. So, by the scene where is leading the refugees to Luthadel, he already has the bead of Lerasium. I don't know if this will change your opinion of what Hoid was doing/how he was acting but the new canon is that Hoid was busy doing Hoid-things in Terris, he was not looking for the Well nor for Lerasium. -
Hint (if I am guessing right haha): "Bridge 4! Side carry!" (Note: the hint is not saying this is Bridge 4 doing a side carry but rather that thinking of what happened during that scene would lead someone to an idea of what is pictured)

Is it just me or do you really don't like Navani
CaptainRyan replied to Megan's topic in Stormlight Archive
@SamsonSeaBorn and @Argel : If it makes you feel any better the bar is actually 5% higher than that - it is, currently, sitting at 58%! Woohoo! Roughly 20,000 words closer to completion! -
Please note the following theory will contain spoilers for the sample chapters of "Liar of Partinel". New Theory: Some, or all, of the original sixteen holders of the shards of Adonalsium were driven to Shatter Adonalsium because of Blarg! There are so many tantalizing hints and possibilities in those few sample chapters. If only all of the Cosmere books were done and we could know what happened! Ah well, someday.

I have always read this as referring to the Skybreakers but I do not know if there is "official" confirmation of this.

To clarify, you mean Sanderson doesn't think of them as good or evil, right? That "does" is just a typo?

Stormlight. She had just drained one of the wall lamps of Stormlight before falling in to Shadesmar.

Sadeas and Secret Societies
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
While I suspect Sadeas was not part of a secret society I do wonder about Ialai (his wife). I would not be surprised if she ended up being connected to a secret society in some fashion. -
Is it just me or do you really don't like Navani
CaptainRyan replied to Megan's topic in Stormlight Archive
I am honestly surprised at the different take so many readers have on Navani as compared to my reaction. It is really interesting to me. I have read the Way of Kings and Words of Radiance many times and have always come away from the readings with a positive impression of Navani. Dalinar describes her unflatteringly on a few occasions but he also notes that she is trustworthy. She does not betray the trust Dalinar, and others, place in her and provides valuable help in deciphering Dalinar's visions and also in providing fabrial research. She is a "political creature" but in a male-dominated society she needs to use the weapons available to her in order to protect her son and herself. As a character her depth is a touch lacking but, overall, I thought she added to the story and I like her. Isn't it cool how so many of us can read the same book but have different reactions? Good stuff. -
If Anticipation spren existed in our world I would literally be surrounded by them!

One big hole for this theory is that Shardplate does not cause the screaming proto-Radiants here like when they touch Shardblades. Renarin is able to wear Shardplate with no issue but when he touches a blade - screaming. The same seems to be true for other proto-Radiants as well; Kaladin holding the Shardhelm during the duel etc. Another big hole is that Shardblades cannot break one another but Shardblades can break Shardplate. If Plate was a spren just like a blade then we would expect it to not break, right?

Sadeas and Secret Societies
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I agree. It is possible that Sanderson hid some of this information from us despite giving us Sadeas viewpoints. I, personally, rate it as "unlikely" but I am not known for skillfully guessing what Sanderson is going to do haha. If you turn out to be right then let me be the first to congratulate you on your foresight and awesomeness! Congrats! -
Sadeas and Secret Societies
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think your argument is compelling but, for literary purposes, I feel like it does not work. We had a few Sadeas PoVs in Words of Radiance and, iirc, he never thought about those societies. I feel like it would be a bit strange for him to be a member and never once think about it. I think Sadeas knows that Amaram is a snake because he was worked closely with him for a long time - Amaram is a lesser lighteyes in Sadeas' own princedom. Sadeas has had plenty of time to see that Amaram simply maintains a good public reputation. On the other hand, I could be totally wrong and Sadeas could have been an active member of one of the societies. I guess we will just have to RAFO. -
The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
CaptainRyan replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I would argue that TLR would want all of his Inquisitors to have access to Allomantic atium otherwise any ol' Mistborn would be able to handily defeat an Inquisitor. -
There is a lot we don't know about Shardplate. For one thing, we have mainly seen Shardplate only in its "modern", Radiant-less configuration. Based on Dalinar's visions we can guess that the way Shardplate worked for Radiants is very different than how it works for Adolin (or other non-Radiant folks in "modern" Roshar). So, is Shardplate some kind of spren bond like the blade? Is it an incredibly advanced fabrial? Is it forged by one (or many) of the Orders of Radiants? We do not know yet. One theory that I, personally, like is that Shardplate allows Radiants to not "leak" Stormlight. We see Szeth, Kaladin and Shallan glow when they are holding Stormlight and that the Stormlight slowly leaks out of them. Perhaps, the Shardplate prevents this leaking. Also, if the Plate has gems inside of it then perhaps it even acts as a kind of Stormlight battery for the Radiants? Or, even, a Stormlight generator! In several of the visions (battle with the Midnight Essences, battle with the Thunderclast) we see Radiants appear, and fight, not during a highstorm. They must be drawing their Stormlight from somewhere eh? Perhaps their plate carries infused gems? Or perhaps their Plate can even generate Stormlight for them? This is another good question. Short answer, I don't know haha. Best guess? I think it would enhance the wearer of the Plate. Someone who is already faster/stronger would be still be faster/stronger than a weaker person who wore the same Plate. But! Do suits of Shardplate provide the same level of bonus or are there differences between the suits?
-
Original quote: @asterion137, grammatically the phrase "impossibly quick" most definitely refers to the word "spun" in this sentence. Kaladin is remarking on how the Shardbearer is spinning impossibly quickly. Note that he does not make any reference to "for a man in such heavy armor" or anything of the like. Also, as Shardplate enhances the entire body of the wearer, it is not just the arms of a Shardplate wearer that have bonus strength. The person, from head to toe, is stronger. This also means the person, from head to toe, is faster. In the case of a human moving, speed is could possibly be defined as "strength in action". The stronger your legs, the faster they can propel you. The stronger your arms, the faster they can swing. The stronger your torso muscles, the faster you can bend in half. Etc. With that definition of speed in mind, one of the original quotes I posted, by Adolin, about Plate enhancing the speed, strength and dexterity of the wearer becomes even more telling - Sanderson, through Adolin, is underscoring the various ways in which Shardplate enhances the user. He could have just said "strength" if all the Plate did was enhance strength (which also includes a speed boost) but he was more specific because Shardplate is more than just strength.' Definition of nimble: "quick and light in movement or action; agile." I sincerely doubt Sanderson would use the word "nimble", which is synonymous with "agile", if he meant "stronger". Your disagreement seems to be centered around redefining every non-strength word Sanderson uses into meaning "strength". Perhaps if Sanderson consistently used "strength" and only once or twice used a non-strength word I would be persuaded but it quite obvious from all of the references that Sanderson is making clear distinctions between "strength" and "speed".

Sylphrena's Max Size and her Shardform
CaptainRyan replied to CaptainRyan's topic in Stormlight Archive
Ah. I must have missed that WoB. The most recent WoB that I have seen on a spren bow & arrow was a RAFO. -
Sorry for the double post but page 822 of 1008 of the Kindle version of the Way of Kings gives the weight of Adolin's Shardplate:

Another battle scene where we see the same Parshendi hit Dalinar twice with full strength and only one of the blows seems to cause damage. page 780 of 1008 of the kindle version of the Way of Kings (emphasis mine): Note that the hammer causes a few tiny cracks in the helm but not on the arm. Same hammer swung by the same angry, determined male Parshendi Warform. I do not know if this will help you quantify anything but I thought it worthy of note.

@Chaos I don't have a screenshot of it but just yesterday I hit my quota and the message was different - it said something about "You can only give out 16 upvotes a day" or something like that. It is the first time I've hit my quota and I chuckled at the choice of 16 (I assumed it was based on Preservation's use of that number). So, either the message is different depending on where you are trying to give upvotes or it might be a different issue than the quota. Just providing some feedback in hopes of helping.

The 17S 4 Reputation Discussion Thread
CaptainRyan replied to Argel's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
Because I was raised as an American and firmly believe that my opinion counts all the time no matter the topic or my experience with the subject at hand, I am here to say that I thoroughly approve of this idea and hope to see it in a future release. I also support the rest of what Chaos said. It is important to be aware of things that might be hurtful to others. It is also important to know when something is fictional and not meant to be harmful in any way. We are all here because we love Brandon Sanderson's work and I think we should focus on what brings us together instead of trying to find the things that might divide us. JE SUIS 17TH SHARD!
