So this "Rial" guy seems out of place. 1. "he was a little pale for an Alethi and had dark brown hair." (More of a description than we'd normally see, and specifically [but minor-ly] NOT like the Alethi) 2. Recognized a watch and knew what it was. Ways to identify him: Has a habit of rolling a sphere across his knuckles (maybe does this with coins in another world?) (Wax does this once, but the other descriptors don't seem to fit.) Has a unique way of talking "ta" instead of "to". Very perfect salute, yet lazy attitude. Unfortunately I only have Stormlight in electronic form, and hence cannot search the other books for keywords. Any ideas?

@draginon, I'm from dfw also, and usually houston is where I go for signings. He hits Murder by the Book (local bookstore) on almost every major tour and it's not too long of a drive (4 hours or so).

Just to go back to your original post...the interludes of stormlight archive hold more worldhopper and cosmere info than most of the rest of the book. Definitely read them!

If you research you would find that most fan artwork reflects the features of the artist, except in specific cases where a bigger deal is made of their characteristics.

Maybe the shin are originally from Taldain, making their sun worship legit ;-)

The progress bar on Brandon's website has changed from the draft (at 91%) to "copyedit review" at 67%! Just another thing to get hyped about in advance of November!

Yes! Good job on the catch, it's one of many easter eggs within the Stormlight Archive! Keep your eyes open for more (and if you want help discovering them, go to coppermind.net and read the articles on Hoid or worldhopper.) Congrats on your first find, there's a lot of fun stuff ahead of you!

Limitations of Awakening with Stormlight.
CosmereQuestioner replied to Calderis's topic in Cosmere Discussion
True, a well cut gem can, and the better cut the more held and for longer. I was thinking of little straw men and cloaks and things that are neither gems nor perfectly shaped for the sole purpose of holding stormlight. -
Limitations of Awakening with Stormlight.
CosmereQuestioner replied to Calderis's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This may be the complete reason for the inability to awaken with stormlight...not only do most awakening commands take many breaths (And I would imagine the exchange rate would make this a huge amount of stormlight), but items are not nearly as good at holding it in as people (i.e. the rock kaladin stuck to the wall, and this without even a command). The amount of stormlight needed might be impossible for more than a nanosecond of awakening. -
Hey, I know Brandon always posts his tour schedule when he knows it, but my question is, approximately how far in advance will that be? I'd like to attend, but my work schedule requires about 4 months notice before taking time off (I'm several hours away from his usual stops). Does anyone know when they'll be made known? (Or a good guess based on his MO?)

It's possible this "bandolier" usage is as innocent as all that, but it's a word that very much implies an ammo belt. If Brandon used this word, it's because he knew what reaction it would cause in our minds. Now he might have been trying to misdirect us, quite possible in fact, but it was deliberate, not as simple as using bandolier to mean something else by accident. Especially when Jasnah was just wandering mysteriously in the cognitive realm AND there's another world that has guns.

Actually I asked Brandon about this for a book customization and he wrote that "Almost anything is possible, but it is very unlikely harmony would split into anything other than ruin/preservation."

Has anyone gotten snapshot signed in person yet? I'm wondering what the catch phrase Sanderson signs in these (like he drew a circle in rithmatist or writes "hands all red" in bands of mourning). Mine came in the mail a couple days ago with just the signature, of course, since it wasn't at a signing, but I'm probably going to bring it to a signing and am debating asking a question for him to answer in it, or just taking the default catch phrase. Thanks, CQ

Just got my copy today! Numbered edition. I'm in the USA, so it will probably take a few more days to get to you.

DMG Using VR Pitch the Cosmere to Sell Studios
CosmereQuestioner replied to Argent's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I guess I should have used "voiceover" not dialogue. Yes, landscapes and fauna, but that won't alone show off the uniqueness...i'd imagine also some action shots containing lashings, spren, or even giant swords. -
DMG Using VR Pitch the Cosmere to Sell Studios
CosmereQuestioner replied to Argent's topic in General Brandon Discussion
15 minutes of VR time on Roshar! How awesome would that be to see? Probably a lot of dialogue and explanation for the suits, but a lot of awesome packed in there too! -
The first time I read Sanderson was also mistborn, and had similar problems. However, he has improved much as a writer since then. Let me recommend you read the stormlight archive (Way of Kings) and judge from there, a much more recent series (active, in fact). You won't be sorry.

Kredik Shaw - Hemalurgy on the land?
CosmereQuestioner replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Mistborn
That WAS my point...the Land might HAVE a spirit web...there might BE power to steal. Just because he hasn't come out and told us that, doesn't mean that the possibility and clues aren't there. I get it, there's not a lot of supporting evidence. But a lot of these "oh it couldn't be" I"m hearing are simply assumptions based on incomplete science from the world of Scadrial as we think we know it. For instance spikes losing power when not in contact with fresh blood...maybe the blood of the land is an underground stream. Maybe they are currently active, or simply a relic of the past, all power drained, and hence their ease of use with allomancy. Yes, this theory is not a "clearly there is lots of evidence showing that this is an obvious use of hemalurgy". But its also a possible explanation for the question (one i haven't yet heard explained away) "Why the heck are there many thin metal poles poked into the ground as part of a castle palace?". Also, a side question: Are you saying that a feruchemical metal item is just as hard to push on when almost empty as when almost full? The amount of investiture in it doesn't matter? Because if not, then a giant piece of metal (which can hold more) with very little investiture in it, would be much less affected by this force, as it would be almost empty, compared to its potential, of investiture. -
Kredik Shaw - Hemalurgy on the land?
CosmereQuestioner replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Mistborn
While I agree with some of what you say, there are a couple things we disagree on. For instance a large piece of metal can be seen with the blue lines from further away. It can be affected through push/pull from further away also. Size does matter. Now I don't know how much metal is in a person, but it is a miniscule amount, it is quite invested, and yes, it is very tough to affect. However, a HUGE piece of metal with unknown investiture (I suspect not a lot, proportionally: despite the land being large, the actual investiture able to be obtained from it may not be comparable to its size...this isn't Elantris with a much stronger connection to location) should be far more accessible. -
Kredik Shaw - Hemalurgy on the land?
CosmereQuestioner replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Mistborn
These are all good points, but not deal breakers. For 1 thing, they are massive pieces of metal, so the diminished push/pull wouldn't be as evident, because their size would make them still push/pullable (I think). There shouldn't be a need to stop the decay since the "spikes" aren't out of their target sitting around losing charge, but are actively engaged. The place may or may not have showed strangeness in the CR...i don't think we can't say it didnt. (Unless you have a source that it is perfectly normal in ways a spike wouldn't be in CR?) And yes, the mists still came to Kedrik Shaw, I need to reread the relevant passages to see how they reacted at times where we see mists around active hemalurgic spikes. -
The lerasium or atium symbol (Or harmonium) would be a good fit. Or a keyword such as "survive" would also be fitting.
-
The first time I read mistborn many years ago it seemed like Kredik Shaw seemed like Hemalurgy on a massive scale (it is described as many spires and towers, some large enough for rooms, others simply thin rods of metal...) but I dismissed this offhand, not knowing Sanderson yet. Rereading it recently, the thought came back. Why would the Lord Ruler build his palace with so many spires, some being nothing more than metal rods? Could this be some sort of power draw or theft from the very land itself? It is somewhat reminiscent of Elantris and the land being used in the aon dor. Thoughts?

All Rosharans once like the Shin?
CosmereQuestioner replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Stormlight Archive
Hehe big eyes and balding are white people traits? Either way I've done more looking into it, and the Shin are not similar to the people of Scadrial (which were based off the yolen) so that theory doesn't work anyways. The rest of the land of shinovar with its chickens, parrots, horses, grass etc., was what led me to this way of thinking though, not some racial bias. -
All Rosharans once like the Shin?
CosmereQuestioner replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Stormlight Archive
Ah, I have now read the appropriate WoB relating to the Highstorms predating the shattering. Why would there be 1 race like those from Yolen amidst the rest of the world? I still wonder if all the races of Roshar were once like them. -
So I was thinking it over, what if all of the people and races on Roshar were once like the Shin? At some point the highstorms came, (it's possibly a perpendicularity, which means it may have come post shattering with Honor); the highstorms changed the world enough that the other races had to adapt (maybe were helped along with this process by the shards or some other powers). The Shin and their land was protected from the storms via the mountains, and didn't have to change like the rest of Roshar.
