Cultivations role in the Oathpact.
thegatorgirl00 replied to KnightofLight's topic in Stormlight Archive
The way I've always interpreted it is that access to the surges is not a magic system in itself but rather the effect of one. Both the Honorblades and Nahel bond alter the spirit web to allow access to the surges. The surges themselves are independent of the shards, but how they are accessed isn't. Remember, Fabrials can access the surges as well. I'll make an analogy to the Metallic Arts to try and make my point clearer. Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy can all be used to increase a person's senses. The mechanics are very different, but to someone who knows little about the Arts the effects would look almost identical. I think this is what's happening here. The real evidence for this theory would be if Vidbinding could affect surges as well. -
I though Eshonai was supposed to have regular PoVs. I'm also not sure about having two Parshendi PoV characters. I think we'll get an interlude from someone bonding a spren in a new Radiant order. I like the theory that Redin will be a Dustbringer, so I would put him as a potential interlude.

I do not believe the Heralds are all powerful. The statement was more about how they would be perceived by people, based on the fact that Ishar singlehandedly destroying all the KR is not viewed as unreasonable and the people were often reduced to Stone Age level technology after a Desolation. This is a huge gap in power. Many Rosharan religions already view the Heralds as gods. We do have this quote from the Prelude. I happen to think that the Oathpact was not completely consentual on the part of the Heralds, as I mentioned in a previous post. From what we've seen, though, I think Honor's intent would prevent him from outright forcing the Heralds into it.

How the Vessels Killed and Shattered Adonalsium
thegatorgirl00 replied to Confused's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Rather than actively trying to separate the power, what if they simply stepped into the shardpool at the same time. Then, the power was naturally drawn to the person with the strongest Connection to it at that moment, leaving sixteen different Shards.- 13 replies

I'd like to point out that Nale, at least, believed he was helping the world. He thought the Radiants returning would lead to a Desolation, so he did everything in his power to try and stop what would essentially be the end of the known world. We know how incredibly wrong he was, but his intentions were to help. I wouldn't be surprised if the other Heralds had similar reasoning for their actions as well.

What do you think the Nightwatcher looks like?
thegatorgirl00 replied to Ciridae's topic in Stormlight Archive
I find it interesting that almost all of these images involve darkness, nature, or both. The nature part is probably the Cultivation influence. There doesn't ssem to be any reason for the darkness except for the fact that she is currently a shadowy, mysterious figure, though. -
Is it really the Herald's place to try and keep the peace? Humanity stayed together for so long because they were fighting a common enemy. After the Desolations ended, humanity would have started to break apart and fight each other. The Heralds would basically become all powerful dictators in the name of keeping peace. Is that actually moral? Also, I have a hard time believing that the Heralds really knew what they were getting into when they agreed to the Oathpact. I find it more likely they were desperate enough to agree to anything to try and save humanity without understanding the consequences for them.

Getting People Hooked on the Cosmere
thegatorgirl00 replied to Nazianzen's topic in General Brandon Discussion
While I don't have much experience getting people into Sanderson beyond recommending him to a couple Wheel of Time or Kingkiller Chronicles fans, I believe the story of how I became a Sanderfan can give some insight. My first exposure to Sanderson was reading Mistborn at fourteen. I was reading anything I could get my hands on, saw the trilogy boxed set on sale, and bought it with a gift card I had. While I enjoyed the books, I didn't love them, and I probably would not have read past TFE if I hadn't bought all three and felt I should get my money's worth. I put the books aside and forgot about them. About a year later, my book club read The Rithmatist. I loved the magic system and connected with the characters. The only part I was not thrilled with was the ending. I asked a friend of mine for some book recommendations a few months later. Among that list was WoK. I recognized Brandon's name from Rithmatist, so I decided to give it a try. I immediately got sucks into the story. Conversations with that friend about a certain King's Wit led me to the cosmere as a whole. A Google search led me to the Coppermind where I saw a farmiliar name… The Mistborn Trilogy. Basically, as others have said, it's about knowing what the person will like. Mistborn wasn't able to make me a Sanderfan, but Stormlight was. -

I imagine her as a giant, sentient, talking spider living in a cave somewhere. Which, now that I think about it, would mean she looks like a type of greatshell. -

Actually, I'd add Adolin to the hero list and put him against Sadeas. I know Adolin isn't technically a 'main' character, but he and Sadeas work well for this. Especially if you consider the end of WoR as the culmination of their antagonism. Sadeas was the one who dueled Yenev for Gavilar, and Adolin planned to duel Sadeas for Dalinar Sadeas pretends to be loyal but wants power, Adolin is loyal and doesn't want to gain power due to his father abdicating Sadeas views people as tools to be used, Adolin is one of the most genuinely caring lighteyes we've seen There are probably others I'm not thinking of right now. I don't think we know enough about Renarin's powers and motives to come up with one for him yet. For Shallan, I'm leaning towards one of the secret society members.

Aesudan Kholin, Theories and Speculations
thegatorgirl00 replied to Gavin-son-son-Odegard's topic in Stormlight Archive
It's possible they knew she wasn't capable and had to accept a marriage to her anyways. If her father was a powerful Highprince who didn't like Gavilar that much, a marriage alliance would be the easiest way to secure power. Rejecting her would mean offending her father and further war. For Game of Thrones fans, just think about what led to the Red Wedding. Besides, based on what we've seen and heard of Gavilar, I'm not convinced he paid as much attention to Elhokar's actions and decisions as he should have.- 108 replies
