  1. Putting aside the fact that a 30 foot long chainsaw is way past the size limit, it just might be possible. I kind of want to ask Brandon about it . Earlier someone mentioned the idea of a spren weapon constantly changing shape - like, a gauntlet that would change shape as you move your hand. If that's possible, then you could totally do a chainsaw. If you have the ability to constantly mutate the shape of an object, there's no need for moving parts. Just make the shape, and then have the spren move the bits around the edges as if they were a spinning chain. Ridiculous, yes, but I wonder...
  2. I am now imagining a shard-chainsaw. Specifically a 30 foot long one.
  3. Woot! My questions were on Shardcast! That just made me really happy Also, just an fyi, it's pronounced "Joe Zombie", so the second time you guys get it right. (Edit for clarification - the second time in the podcast, it was correct)
  4. FYI, I just called the Orem Barnes and Noble, and they directed me to the event listing on their Facebook page, which was moderately helpful. I've included some of the details from the event at the bottom of this post. There was no information on actually pre-ordering a book, though, and there wasn't any clear way to "pre-order for pickup in store" on their website. I called the store again and was able to place a pre-order over the phone - that would be my recommendation, to make sure it ends up in the right place. How numbers are assigned: Wristband details:
  5. I don't know if there's formalized process for claiming questions, but I'm the one at 24:10
  6. I know this thread is a bit old, and I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, but I'm just now listening to this episode, and I had a thought: The Sibling is "slumbering", and the Stormfather said "You hurt them enough". I don't have access to a copy of the book right now to confirm this, but I believe I remember it being mentioned at one point that there was only one bondsmith instead of the usual 3. If there was only one bondsmith at the time of the Recreance, and they were bonded to the Sibling, then I wonder if the breaking of that bond is what caused the Siblings "slumbering". And the Stormfather and Nightwatcher weren't similarly affected because they weren't bonded at the time of the Recreance. Admitted, this doesn't take into account the Siblings withdrawal or the failure of Urithiru, and I might be completely off with the one-bondsmith-thing, but it's a thought I had.
  7. My thoughts on this are a bit more mundane. We know that the pre-catacendre world grew much hotter the farther south you went, to the point where oceans supposedly boiled and people died of the heat. I would expect that once you passed that "heat belt" the climate started getting cooler again, and it's my guess that the southern people lived in an area that's cooler than the uninhabitable zone, but still much hotter than "normal". Brandon has mentioned the southerners having to "adapt", so I think that 1,000 years of living in a hot climate achieved the effect you're talking about, of altering the way their bodies work. Then, when Harmony remade the planet, all of a sudden their land is now cold (I think the way they describe it, as being an uninhabitable frozen wasteland, is suspect) and they have to tap heat. This is supported by the end, when we see the Sovereign's memories, and we see people freezing to death of conditions that he Sovereign thinks are not even that harsh.
  8. Would a 17th shard tournament be a popularity contest like this, or would it involve some sort of contest between the contestants? Like trivia questions, or who can write the best fight scene, or name the most characters, etc.
  9. Spoilers for Elantris 10th anniversary edition:
  10. As cool as Obliteration is, it's time for his reign of terror to end. Vasher. Though, through the history of this tournament, I have not shown myself to be inclined towards choosing the more balanced of the two contestants, in this case I'd like to choose a winner that I think has a chance of providing an interesting fight and not just dominating everyone. Vin, Marsh, Kelsier, Dalinar, Wayne; I feel like Vasher is on a level with them. Obliteration really isn't. We've gotten rid of the shards (assuming that this is the pre-shardic vin) so let's get rid of the unholy invincible sungod now.
  11. I believe there was a WoB that Hoid could survive decapitation, though we have not seen it in a published work yet.
  12. the.fulgid covered what I was talking about pretty well. The only addition I'd like to make is that I don't believe Hoid's "resistance to being killed" comes from the metallic arts.
  13. I was thinking about this statement some more, and if Dragonsteel is pre-shattering, then I think we have a pretty good candidate for the "entity that opposes Adonalsium" or however it was phrased. Anyways, just makes me want to find somewhere to discuss Dragonsteel even more.
  14. I don't have an answer as to what he is, but seeing as he's had at least some of his more spectacular powers since before the Shattering, I don't think he falls into any of the categories we're familiar with, such as shard, splinter, etc.
  15. Is there a place anywhere where it's permitted to discuss Dragonsteel? It's my understanding that we're not supposed to talk about it in the forums, but is there a specific board where it's allowed? If there is, I haven't been able to find it.
  16. But Hoid can grow his head back if you cut it off. Or does he grow his body back? I really can't remember. As much as I like Vin, you really can't beat that. Hoid.
  17. Just registered for Brandon Sanderson's lecture series class! Woohoo!!!!!!!!

  18. I don't have the text of Shadows of Self on me to refer to, but doesn't it say that if you coat the spike in blood it stops the decay of power/loss of charge? Of course, then we get into questions of whether or not the blood needs to be wet, and whether or not that's feasible for long periods of time.
  19. In a very strange way, I think that Obliteration and Nightblood actually have pretty similar views of the world. Their concepts of evil, and who to destroy, are both kind of warped. Not the same, definitely, but both strange. I don't think Nightblood would qualify Obliteration as evil, and I don't know that Obliteration would necessarily go out of his way to destroy Nightblood. Because of this, I'm totally voting for a teamup! Can you imagine that? It's crazy, and I think it would actually kind of work! If that's not really an option, though, I'll abstain from voting this round. I just have no idea how this one would go.
  20. This is really tough. Vin: At one point holds a shard Mind controls armies Has a religion based off of her (and others) Killed multiple gods (depending on how you count them) Can fly (pretty much...) Szeth Absolutely utterly insane Massacred tons of people and cause worldwide chaos, toppling kingdoms Came back from the dead His story isn't over yet Can fly (can he still?) So, yeah... I'm really not sure on this one. Let's go with Vin, just because she has people backing her up. Other than that, I honestly think they're pretty evenly matched. (Note that I'm disregarding her shardic powers and giving heavy emphasis to the power of awesomeness.)
  21. In the Liar of Partinel, we're presented with humanity on the edge of collapse. What if, like the OP is saying, Adonalsium is an uncontrolled force (whether or not it once had a consciousness controlling it) and 16 people went to go take that power to save humanity? That accounts for the opposing force; in this case, the opposing force itself didn't shatter Adonalsium, but was definitely the reason it was shattered. The threat humanity is facing isn't well described in Liar of Partinel (it's explored a bit more, though still not explained well, in Dragonsteel) but that might be the "big bad" that Brandon has mentioned.
  22. The only time I remember seeing the dark mist was in Well of Ascension when they go through the chamber outside the Well; are there any other times I'm forgetting about?
  23. That's news to me; not to totally derail conversation or anything, but I was under the impression that the Deepness was the mist, which was the gaseous form of Preservation, and Ruin encouraged the mists/added to them. I haven't heard that the Deepness was specifically of Ruin. Is there a WoB or a thread somewhere that you can point me to that explains this?
  24. Hoid. That bit about emotional allomancy is a good point. It's hard to beat someone who can mind control you. Plus, I'm pretty sure that mind controlling Koloss wouldn't be stopped by Hoid's block against harming people, as long as he didn't try to use the mind control to cause harm. He could just use the control to make Human surrender.
