  1. Yes Nazrilof is Nazh's full name (well surname), which is Isaac's character. What you noticed there is the attribution for the photographer that took that picture, who was presumably Isaac. It's actually in all of the books from the last few years. It's just a funny little Easter egg (Brandon didn't even know they did it at first).

  2. I'm absolutely hopeful (I'm also a bit of a White Sand apologist, but that's beside the point). I've long thought that White Sand's biggest flaw is the fact that it was originally written as prose. It was kind of Frankenstein-monstered into a graphic novel to varying levels of success. This new project is going to start its life as a graphic novel and is being designed with that in mind.

I went to the Provo signing on Friday, and asked several questions. So I just joined the Arcanum, and posted one of them...

Would you also mind posting those in the event thread? We really prefer to have something to cite as a source for every entry in Arcanum, whether that is an image, a snippet of audio, or a paraphrased report here on the forums.

  4. Chapter 1 page 13 (the page after one of the professors tells Khriss that Kenton needs a skilled diplomat on his side, at the top of the page where Kenton and Aarik are discussing the Diem's debt for the first time)

Aarik says "The Diem's situation is bad old friend. The Taisha wants to disband you..." I think that should be "The Taishin want to disband you", since Taisha is singular and it is the entire council (-ish) that want the Diem disbanded.

    • In Arcanum Unbounded it references a magic system existing on Threnody before Ambition was even there. I can ask about an Ambition-based magic though.

As point of fact, as this is something Windy and I have argued discussed in the past, it does not say that there way a magic system in existence, just that there was likely Investiture present. While that could have taken the form of a magic system it could also have been something similar to the aviar of First of the Sun.

Understanding or not, you have answered my question.  My question mostly came from the line:

I'm curious which forms, including mate-, slave, and dullform were not asexual, as opposed to the forms that are asexual and incapable of childbirth.  This confirms that not all forms can have children, which solves my question.  Now I just want to know what forms, that we've seen, can or cannot reproduce.  I'm curious if there is a pattern to what forms are reproductive-ly viable, at any level, versus completely asexual and non-viable for reproduction.

I think your mistake is that you are assuming "asexual=cannot give birth", which isn't the case? Asexual just means they don't experience sexual attraction, not that they are incapable of childbirth.

  7. 1 hour ago, Stark said:

Do we have confirmation on which forms are capable of breeding?  I assume slaveform, dullform and mateform are on the list.  Potentially workform as well.  But if all forms are capable of mating, it makes me question the asexual nature of malen and femalen genders in non-mateforms.  If all forms can reproduce at differing capacity levels, then why have a non-reproductive gender designation?

I assume that warform, and likely many of the Regal or fused forms are incapable of mating, but it would be nice to get a bit more information on these distinctions.

You said earlier that Parshendi are primarily asexual, does that extend to all Listeners -- parshmen, and those descended from Listeners, like Horneaters and Herdazians -- or is it just the Parshendi?

    Brandon Sanderson

Most Listener forms are asexual, but several forms are different, including slaveform. Horneaters and Herdazians are not, as a rule, though there are higher instances of asexuality among them.

    uchoo786

I was actually wondering about how Parshmen would reproduce if they are only in slaveform? I thought one had to be in mateform in order to reproduce?

Also, could Horneaters and Herdazians change forms as well?

    Brandon Sanderson

For the first, mateform is not the only form capable of producing--any more than warform is the only one capable of swinging a sword. The forms are specializations.

    For the second, RAFO.

This is all we have. I'm not sure I understand your questioning of the asexual nature of non-mateforms though?

If someone gets the chance, I'd be extremely appreciative if they would ask a question or two about this quote:

Given that the singers were trapped in slave- and dullforms for thousands of years, and that malen and femalen are completely asexual - how did the species survive?  Is it that mateform makes it easier to successfully procreate, and the other forms it is possible, but not easy?  Because if mateform is the only form with male and female traits and the ability to procreate, how did the species not die out?

We know from Sah talking to Kaladin that slaveform could have children, so if mateform is the only procreation form, did Cultivation intercede on their behalf as a boon/curse situation to help them escape their gods?  Remove their forms, and by extension their gods, but allow them to procreate in any form until mateform is rediscovered?Because if memory serves, the original council of five were all dullform, because that is all they had for generations?

Slaveform has the capability to breed (but not as effectively as mateform), just like workform can swing a sword (but not as effectively as warform). The forms are just specializations. Cultivation did not need to be involved.

In the hardcover 2016 edition of Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians pages 132, 133, and 135 peteridactyl, pterydactle and pterrodactyle instead of pterodactyl. Spotted by my 11 year old budding proof reader

Those are all actually intentional, they're part of the joke.

I’ve found some links with infirnmation that don’t seem to be on Arcanum. For example, https://www.tor.com/2013/01/23/brandon-sandersons-wheel-of-time-answers-from-torchat/. How can I add these?

That wasn't included because it is purely Wheel of Time information, as such we feel it is outside of our purview. Going forward we will include questions pertaining to the Wheel of Time, but we will not be adding the backlog.

  11. 33 minutes ago, OrangeJedi said:

I can ask that one. Great question, I want to know the answer now...Hopefully not a RAFO...

I will be definitely be recording the line and almost certainly staying the whole time. Nothing more exiting than listening to WoB's for 3 hours!

Pretty sure that it has been RAFO'd before and that Brandon plans on explaining it in a story eventually.

Okay! Should I edit this tag, or leave that to the arcanists? The issue with this tag is when I try to edit entries, I just search for the need attention tag and edit all those. It's a bit confusing when ones like these are included.

Go ahead and edit out the tag. If there is legitimately no need for it then it should be removed.

In the past you have said that the Stormfather is a cognitive shadow of Honor, is it possible for other cognitive shadows, such as shades from Threnody or Kelsier to enter into a nathal bond? If so what abilities would the bond grant to both the shadow and the bonded?

Well this is embarrassing, totally did not read this... We do actually know part of this:

Can a person who dies but somehow hasn't passed Beyond the Three Realms (a la Kelsier) serve in place of a spren for Radiant purposes?

    Brandon Sanderson

This is theoretically possible, but it would require an unusual sequence of events.

    WeiryWriter

We know that the Stormfather is a Cognitive shadow and is also acting as a spren for Dalinar but is he able to do that because the "unusual sequence of events" took place or is there something else going on specific to the nature of the Stormfather?

    Brandon Sanderson

    RAFO. :)

    Carluun

If Kelsier became a "spren" for a Radiant, would he grant Surgebinding or Allomancy?

    Brandon Sanderson

    RAFO.

    - On Sel, most Aons patterns are formed out of multiple Aon Aons in different combinations with the addition of some extra lines or circles for some aons. With the addition of the chasm line, would the aons would better/differently if the chasm line were added to each of the aon aons that make up the more complex aons. (I know that I used the word aon way too much in this question.)

We do know the answer to this one already:

    Quote

    linkhyrule5

Why is there only one Chasm line per Aon? Since each Aon is made up of repetitions of Aon Aon, shouldn't there be a Chasm line per repetition?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Aons aren't JUST made up of repetitions of Aon Aon. There's a lot more to them than that. Some follow a repetition pattern, others do not. The only requirement is using the initial Aon once, then building from there. Because of this, I made the new requirement be only one use of the chasm line.

Aons can actually have multiple forms and still work. For example, if you drew the chasm line on each one of those Aons, they'd work fine. (Maybe even better, in some cases.) What is happening in the books is that the Aons are ALMOST functional, and the Dor is straining to come through them. The chasm line brings them the one step further they need to be functional. However, further tweaking could make them more efficient.

I'm curious if the Stoneward spren might be named keenspren? Wyndle made a garden for some of them, and there has been no indication that there are conscious spren aside from our nine types and then the larger spren like the Stormfather. It'd be odd to me if there were fully self-aware spren that are not associated with an order of Radiants.

I know we've talked about this elsewhere but I just want to get this in this thread. Logically I find this highly probable. I'm also resistant to the idea that there are varieties of true spren that do not participate in the Nahel bond.

I'm having a hard time reconciling CR mistspren/ PR Truthwatcher spren, and CR lightsprean / PR comet spren. The five kinds of spren we have seen in both Physical and Cognitive Realms have been extremely similar across Realms - in the case of Syl and Ivory, pretty much just a smaller version. I don't think that those ones match.

The comet spren... there's something very odd about it. It speaks to Rhythms, even before Venli has bonded it. None of the other spren do that.

If I were in a crazy mood, I'd say that mistspren sound like something that came over from Scadrial. But it would take quite a series of events to get Scadrian splinters serving Rosharan honorspren.

I do agree that the mismatch between Physical and Cognitive forms is odd but at the very least I'm confident in the lightspren/comet spren connection. Timbre has to be the daughter of Captain Ico, who he has said has run off chasing dreams.

As for Timbre only speaking the rhythms, I concur with a lot of the discussion about it in this thread. She and Venli are still very early in their bond so its possible she just hasn't progressed enough. Alternatively the singer/spren Nahel bond might just simply be different.

Yeah I highly doubt the mistspren have any meaningful connection to Scadrial.

I agree, full stop.  I was in the process of collecting my own thoughts and doing a literature search, only to discover that not only did you use the same quotes, you gave the Dustbringer spren the same name I did.

I also agree with Windrunner's point that the only sentient spren are involved with Radiants.

Hehe I guess great minds think alike?

I like this quite a lot.

Another thought - at least as we have seen it, the Perpendicularity on First of the Sun is hugely dangerous.  Assuming that it is still the case when Hoid writes the letter, I could easily see him nevertheless using it - just as he used Preservation's while Ruin was trapped.

The problem is that the magic systems don't seem to quite fit together.  While they both involve Connections between some living thing (parasite or microorganisms), I would prefer a more concrete explanation.

    Thanks!

On the magic system thing, I don't know that there really has to be a formal link between the magic on the two worlds. We know that the shardworlds themselves play a role in how Investiture manifests, so two worlds Invested by the same Shard might have vastly different manifestations of Investiture. First of the Sun is also only mildly Invested so it would probably have more in common with other low-level Invested planets than with Taldain itself.

I really like this theory, because it actually makes sense, plus I like to figure out which gods Bavadin is. I just think that it's highly unlikely that she managed to make two Perpendiculaities. I guess her different personas could all actually be Splinters of the original Bavadin, and she just managed to make sculpt them into being like her, but I'm not sure if I really believe that a Splinter could create a Perpendiculairty. Plus, Khriss said that there's not a Shard on First of the Sun.

Brandon has said that this perpendicularity is much smaller in scale than other perpendicularities, which could potentially be because it is the result of a Splinter rather than a full Shard. At this point I don't think we know enough about how Autonomy creates these aspects of herself to really say whether they even count as Splinters or are something entirely new...
