Concerning spren, my understanding is they were created by those holding shards of Adonalsium (ie Tanavast/honor and Cultivation). It seems like many spren were created when Honor was shattered (for instance when Syl says she is a tiny piece of a god) although, from other posts I have read, it seems likely that some spren were created even before Honor shattered. Tying that in to Jasnah's explanations about spren being physical renderings a of a cognitive realm, perhaps spren were simply created that way by the Shards; they were created as cognitive beings that could find physical form and sentience through bonds with conduits of the physical realm. Very interesting stuff and if others can shed more clarity on the topic I'd love to hear it! Cheers!

Very interesting! Thank you for the clarification! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the SA but there are so many things to remember (in addition to finding gems among WoB) that oftentimes I find myself overlooking/forgetting things. Eventually I will conduct a re-read of the SA books before the next one comes out but in the meantime I've opted to read the other Cosmere novels. Cheers! Edited for spelling.

Interesting. How do we know that Tanavast was not killed until after the Recreance? My impression was that he did not create the spren while alive (at least the ones bonding to KR) as it is said that the spren wished to imitate what they saw Tanavast grant the Heralds; it was then that they began bonding with men and those who were bonded began to form orders to emulate the Heralds, thus being a "grassroots" formation. Couldn't this have begun after Honor shattered? Thanks!

Welcome!! I am relatively new to the forum as I just finished SA. I could be way off but aren't all spren the remains of a single shard of Adonalsium (Honor)? I thought that when Tanavast was killed, Honor shattered, forming the spren. I'd love to hear from someone more knowleagable than myself! Cheers!

My apologies. I can see my ignorance as a relatively new fan of the Cosmere puts me at a disadvantage. But I will continue to read and learn!

World misconceptions that are difficult to shift.
SingTheSorrow replied to ljósmóður's topic in Stormlight Archive
One misconception I have is Shallan's name. WoB puts it as Shuh-lawn and I've heard many others pronounce it Shal-un (or Shal-on). For some reason I've never like how either sounds and so I've always pronounced it as Shay-lan. (EDIT: the lan portion I say more like Len or Lyn) Has a sort of Celtic name sound to it. Cheers! -
I know this is the correct pronunciation but I've never liked it personally, sounds too much like I'm saying "shalom" (means peace in Hebrew if anyone is unaware). Instead I've always thought of it as Shay-lan. I know its wrong but for some reason I really like how it sounds.

Never even heard of it lol. So unfortunately I don't know how you'd pronounce that either.

What is the "Rock" Hoid was named after? (Way of Kings)
SingTheSorrow replied to WayneSpren's topic in Stormlight Archive
Wow very intruiging (and frustratingly confusing) theories about Hoid. I can see I have a lot more Sanderson reading to do...but even if I do I doubt I will have a much better understanding. Its all so intricate and complex it makes my head spin -
I know this topic is a bit old but I have been reading Elantris and am wondering how people say "gyorn". I can't decide between GUY-orn or Gee-orn. Or perhaps its JY-orn or JEE-orn? Any thoughts??

Hmm so its a game of sorts? Offer someone something that is "spiked" with the aim of getting them to say they accept it? One thing I know I understand for certain is that all this talk of cookies made me hungry...so I tried to bake cookies...and failed
-
...pardon my ignorance but I still don't understand completely. This is my first forum ever being a part of...what does being spiked mean? I understand what spiking real food would mean but not on the internet... If I'm just an idiot for not getting this please pardon my ignorance.

So why have I seen a few people saying not to accept coockies? I mean, the signature does sound kinda like a warning in itself, 'Baked Goodness You Can't Trust'. Haha

Well I believe your image of him is pretty much what Sanderson intended! I feel like I need a picture that fits him to get a good image of him in my head. -

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who pictured Wit this way! And even though I'm a guy I must say I find it hard not to picture Dalinar as being ruggedly good looking with scars and a somewhat aging face...more like he's attractive in a badass sort of way if that makes sense lol. -

Lol well as a male who is attracted to women I can't say I find Tom to be a pretty boy but I think I get what you mean. To me it was the sort of mischevious yet intelligent and somewhat condescending attitude that I think Wit has and could see Tom portraying well. Also Wit's description of having sharp features to me kinda matches what Tom looks like IMO. Just my take! -
Favorite Stormlight Archive Scene?
SingTheSorrow replied to SingTheSorrow's topic in Stormlight Archive
This!! Such a great scene, the whole conversation and then when they ride out the high storm, just phenomenal emotional conveyance by Sanderson. I also loved the scene where Amaram gets called out, such a great feeling of justice! On a more simple note I love the scene when Kaladin and Bridge Four continue to eat stew outside once they are in Dalinar's camp and when they go out drinking the one time. Builds the feeling of comraderie and makes me feel like they're really friends. Also loved the whole scene where Dalinar and Adolin fight to survive after Sadeas betrays them. I love the emotion and tension and then how Kaladin and the bridge crew abandon their mistrust of lighteyes to act with total honor. It was so epic and adding Eshonia to the mix made it even cooler. -

For some reason, right from the get-go, I found myself picturing Wit/Hoid as looking like Tom Hiddleston (plays Loki in Thor and the Avengers movie). I don't know why I immediately pictured this! He's the only character that I had this happen with. For my own personal satisfaction though I don't mind picturing him looking that way Cheers! -

Welcome! Nice name! I just recently joined after finishing the Stormlight Books and found myself browsing the forums in search of further clarity and discovery as I am forced to wait for the next book. This is my first time joining a site like this and I must say it has been very fulfilling (if not also very time consuming) thus far! Have an upvote and hope to see you around! Cheers! -
Welome! Have an upvote courtesy of myself I'm reading Elantris (just finished Stormlight books) and I am loving it. Very different from the Stormlight books but it's awesome to see Sanderson's creative diversity! Cheers!
