I want to point out that everything about this is very tentative. Especially the title. In fact suggestions are very, very welcome there. Bring them on. Basically, this is my NaNoWriMo... but not really since I'm starting early. I just want to get a novel done so I can let it sit while writing another and then come back to it in a few months and do some heavy lifting. But I also like feedback so ... yeah. General Feedback. I feel like I laid the magic system on a little thick in the prologue. But I felt that since so much time is spent on a character gradually learning a different Magic System (Black) that having what Red can do laid out in the beginning will simplify things later on when it comes into play. I *really* want to stick to this. So I'm going to write it to the end no matter how much I end up hating it. Currently, the elevator pitch is Lies of Locke Lamora meets Frankenstein meets Surrogates. So here's the prologue and the first chapter introducing a one off secondary character and one of the two main povs.

I'm writing something for Monday for an irl group so I'll put it out on here as well. AND I have a big backlog of people's stuff to go through and comment on. I AM going to do this.

This bugged me too! I was just thinking about it. Plus, wouldn't he need a constant supply of atium to keep it up? Even if Marsh is able to make himself practically immortal with the Lord Ruler's trick, he still has all of the Lord Ruler's weaknesses. He needs a constant supply of atium to burn. The Lord Ruler solved this by creating a whole economy based on the supply of the metal he needed to stay alive (did he know it was Ruin's body? He must have because of all the atium he had stored up in HoA.) Marsh doesn't have this luxury. Unless he lives in the Pits of Hathsin, he's going to have to deal with the fact that atium is a super-ultra-luxury. He needs to constantly keep contact with that atium or else he'll just age to death in moments like how the Lord Ruler did at the end of The Final Empire. Do we even know the status of atium post Hero of Ages? Mining it seemed to be an inherently cruel and degrading practice. Why would they keep it going. tl;dr the Lord Ruler's Trick is the "bad" version of immortality as seen in Tangled. Really complicated and labor intensive and the moment you aren't in contact with your power source you're done. Are we sure that Marsh is alive and well in the next Mistborn trilogy? The caveat of course being that I am not versed in Mistborn speculation/theorizing. Just freestyling.

I quite liked Infinity Blade. I'd never played the game so I have no idea how well it ties in to anything, but I loved the magic as technology angle as well as the humor. A nice, light adventure that left me hungering for more. Shame that more would have to be acquired in game form.

Question about unreleased works
Yados replied to MasterGhandalf's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I tried to get it on interlibrary loan at NYU last year. ... didn't work. But then, NYU. -
Question about unreleased works

Edit: Whoops, posted before reading all the new posts including the explanatory one. Yeah, that's why I thought they were called "trunk" novels. Though it is confusing terminology. -

Maybe the big shakeup that caused the magic to go wonk is directly related to all the high-level cosmere stuff? -
New Book by Brandon Sanderson Released
Yados replied to Zas678's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Ah, thanks for the heads up. When you say DRM locked do you mean locked to the iPad platform or locked to the user (in that I would need to enter a password to put it on a new device like how songs used to be)? Because if it's the latter I still may use iBooks over the B&N Nook Store. -
Sinspire has since made a larger character sheet of all the main Way of Kings characters (Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Adolin, Jasnah, Navani, Szeth) which I will not post for her but can be found at her art tumblr. http://paperpie.tumblr.com/ click the text "view the fullsize" in the first sentence of her description to accomplish that goal.

Currently, I'm reading Infinity Blade: Awakening and The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. Both short. This is good because The Cold Commands by Richard K Morgan just came out. Can't wait to get started on that. I liked The Steel Remains so much I almost read it all in one sitting.

I'm sure nothing is canon unless it's published. Aside from meta-speculation, I suppose. -
New Book by Brandon Sanderson Released

I just want to point out that I had no idea that iBooks was DRM Free and it is one of the most refreshing things. I think I have found my default ebook outlet. Unless they have terrible, terrible practices that I don't know about. Like not paying authors or dumping poison in lakes. Something along those lines. -
That is all quite valid. This is my first draft and it suffers from, among other things, being for a creative writing workshop with strict, strict page limits. Which, thankfully, don't apply to revisions, so I can do whatever I want with it from here on out. The limit meant a lot of the downtime between Barryl and Aerill, which better established what exactly they were doing, had to go. As well as their relationship and how it thematically tied in to the first two segments. What also had to go was an extended fight scene (well, all the fights really) that got replaced hastily with "archers archers everywhere" as well as the "bows are guns" stuff. Also the sequences would have introduced another magic system all together. Though, in retrospect, that was a good call as there is a lot going on here for 20 pages. Right now, as of that critique, my list of things to do with the story are as follows: 1) Add in character stuff between Barryl and Aerill. 2) Add in action scenes. On the wall as well as in the dungeon. Greater sense of danger. Especially in regards to Barryl because the arrows going through him was a complete afterthought and a bad one at that. 3) Expand/Better Describe the ascension in the dungeon. 4) Just tie in the second half in better with the first half. 5) More visual descriptions. 6) Try to make the chronology more accessible. 7) Expand the University scene to include a least a little student life. Is there anything specific you can think of that might help make the learning curve less steep? Right now I'm kind of toying with the idea of expanding it into a 100-120 page novella for NaNoWriMo instead of plunging into the Reaper as I kind of have a better outline for this at the moment. Especially since I've had it commented to me that this reads like a few scenes from a much larger story that the reader doesn't get to read. Maybe I should just write that story.

Currently, I'm messing around with a larger project (tentatively) named The Reaper. However, I don't quite have enough time/prewriting to write a full novel at the moment. I'm thinking about jumping in full force and at least have stuff to edit later w/ NaNoWriMo, but for the next month I have too much school/work on my plate. At least that's how it seems. I may start early regardless. So I'm doing short stories set in the world of The Reaper with little to no relationship with the main plot. Which is nice because I get to play around with other countries, cultures, and magic systems which were in my notes but didn't directly factor into the big arc. Blood and Tallow ties a bit more to the main plot than I expected it to at the end, but I think it still stands alone. At least I hope. Happy readings!

Personally, I vastly prefer the British covers for Mistborn and I think the same about this one for Elantris. That's not saying much as I don't care much for the original Elantris cover. And by Mistborn covers, I mean the mass market paperback editions, not the American hardback ones, which are actually quite nice. However, Way of King's American cover is much, much better than its British counterpart. Like, part of my excitement for new Stormlight Archive books comes from anticipating the covers that will arrive alongside them. I hope we see a Warbreaker edition in this style.

Yados replied to Asmodemon's topic in Reading Excuses

What Are You Watching Right Now?
Yados replied to Silus - Shard of Flame's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Yeah, for some reason Moffat goes full-on Indiana Jones with his finales and they really work for me. This last half of the season was quite strong. Even Night Terrors was passable. I'm very interested in what the future holds. I would love to see the show focus on the Doctor and River with Amy and Rory only showing up occasionally. I'd also love to see more Canton or *gasp* a new companion. This is longest the show has ever gone with a consistent companion/Doctor. -
I know! I feel like a huge stick in the mud sometimes, but people need to keep a narrative voice consistent. Also tense!

Mine is: http://thecatastrophists.tumblr.com/ Fairly well-updated. This isn't much Sanderson/Book culture on Tumblr though so it's mainly DC Comics, Adventure Time, Doctor Who, Parks and Rec, and Community atm.

Some books don't really need to be hardback. Way of Kings is not one of those books. It's epic and collectible and benefits from the extra inner-cover art and larger illustration size. I assume it won't be THAT much more off Amazon as they discount HCs but not Mass Market Paperbacks.

I'm probably the only person in the world who was attracted to WoT by the cover design. For some reason, I picked up the first book, looked at Lan's helmet, and thought it was a Fantasy book with Eastern influences. ... it wasn't. But the research I did trying to find out if it was convinced me to give the books a shot. That was two years ago and now I am up to date and awaiting aMoL. And so is my gf, who I had to force the books upon, but who is now more into them than even I.

Yeah, I've been amazed at how much I've learned from Writing Excuses. It's my ritual to listen to a couple before I sit down to write/worldbuild. It repeats itself sometimes and other times it isn't exactly related to my stages of writing, but listening to people talk about writing never fails to get me in the mood to write. Also, stuff about world building, pacing, characters, and magic are all relevent to my work and almost never touched upon in my current Fiction Workshop (full of serious writers).

Wonderful. You have my email.
