Cards Against The Cosmere
FeatherWriter replied to FeatherWriter's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Yeah, CAH is played in a similar style! Prompt card, and everyone puts in their best response. Sometimes there's multiple blanks for a card, and you submit multiple cards. (Those can be really fun if you make a good combo!) Though rather than just nouns and adjectives, Cards Against Humanity is usually... well, its tagline is "A Party Game For Horrible People." It's a pretty inappropriate game, but dang is it fun. My cards are... pretty tame by CAH standards.- 5 replies

Fun fact about Featherwriter: The first time she ever played Cards against Humanity was waiting in line at the Words of Radiance release camp out. We played with the "BYU approved" version, so we took a lot of cards out, but man it was fun and I got hooked. (Even though I lost that game horribly.) But you know what that game needed? COSMERE THEMED CARDS. Fret not, dear fandom. I am here to help. Here are 60 calls (black cards) and 153 responses (white cards) ready to use. I wrote most of these about a year ago, but only got around to putting them into a usable format about a month ago. So what are you gonna get? There's some cards that are... of a salacious nature, but nothing egreiously bad. There's some things that are extremely obscure. There's some things that are hopefully funny on their own, and others you'll have to use creatively. Some jokes from the 17S side of the fandom, and some from the tumblr side. Just a crazy mix all around. You can play these cards online with your friends through Pretend You're Xyzzy or print out your own or whatever you'd like to do with them. However, I'd ask that if you're going to use them, try to give me credit somewhere? I put a lot of time and effort into these cards and I'm rather pleased with them! Let me know what you think!

I... just don't like the flavor? Also I'm kinda lactose intolerant, so eating too much makes me sick. Currently, I'm planning on doing Splintercast for cosmere books, if possible and if there's desire for it to happen again. So, not for Calamity, but yes for Shadows of Self, possibly? -

I'M BACK LET'S DO THIS Alas, I actually dislike cheese quite a bit. It's not terrible if it's with other, stronger flavors, but for the most part, I avoid just cheese in and of itself, as well as mainly-cheese-based dishes. So, no grilled cheese, no cheese pizza, no mac and cheese, no nachos with queso. Nice to meet you! I apologize for my dislike of cheese. Well... considering that I've played Dragon Age Inquisition like 4 times... I'm gonna go ahead and say I think it's alright. JK, I love it a lot. My fave in the series. I've been obsessed with months. Cullen is my husband, but the other characters are lovely too. I could play the combat all day, and then the environments are just drOP DEAD GORGEOUS. Three desert levels. THREE DESERT LEVELS. Also I've owned the Mass Effect series for like three years, but never got around to playing it. I've never been as much of a sci-fi person, but I'll probably play them eventually? Eric Whitacre is unfairly handsome. Incredible composers are supposed to be stuffy looking old guys, not Kelsier look-alikes! Hmm fave besides Renarin? Kaladin or Kelsier maybe? Kaladin was the only person I cared about in Stormlight Archive my first time reading it (much to my eternal shame). My guilty pleasure faves are Denth and Mraize. Vin is pretty spot on fantastic too. Least favorite... character-wise, I've been convinced of the downfalls of Zane as a character. While I like the way he stretches Vin and Elend's relationship, I'll maintain that he was somewhat poorly handled. Adien from Elantris had some really cringe-worthy aspects to his handling too. Person-wise? It's probably a tie between Straff and Sadeas. Am... I allowed to say Truthwatcher? Though I've always dreamed of flying and Windrunning would let me do that... I can't choose! Called Forth???? What is this baffling novel? ORIginAL WOrk?? noT fAnFIC? Okay but I actually started writing Called Forth 2.0 the other day. I'm ready to overhaul this sucker and finally let it shine. ^^sneak peak^^ Compassion or Empathy. -17,000 My assassins are already on their way to your location. -

EDIT: I see you redacted the question, but it's okay! I answered it anyway, and it's all good. Like I said above, I'm not really dedicatedly shipping anymore when it comes to SA? I mean, Shallarin has kind of a special place in my heart because I committed so much time and effort into it, but thinking of Shallan and Renarin together at the moment makes me want to hiss at her and clutch him protectively, so that's not really shipping? Mostly with SA ships I'm like "Yeah that sounds fun" for the most part, without being super invested in it (Kadolin, Kalarin, Shallarin??, Dalinavani, The OT4, Shadolin, Drehy/Lopen) or I'm like "eugh, no that's definitely not my thing" (Jasnah... with anyone really, Shaladin, Lift with anyone older than 4 years more than her). In terms of fic, I'll mostly just write whatever feels right for the situation. I have lots of friends who ship Kalarin, so I tend to lean in that direction a lot (and let's be real, Kaladin and Renarin are super cute). Mostly because if I write my friends' favorite ships I can more THOROUGHLY TORTURE THEM. But Chapter 42 of WoR was pretty much like... the most Kalarin thing I had ever read and I was like "Welp, if Brandon's gonna write Kalarin that well, who am I to disagree??" I went to the Words of Radiance release at BYU! That is the only time I have been in Utah. It'd be fun to go back, especially to see the slot canyons! I've seen all of Nine, Ten, and Eleven, but nothing of Twelve or the original runs. If you want to talk Doctor Who at me, be prepared to slog through my intense dislike of everything that Steven Moffat chooses to be and write. Gotta go, I'll answer more later! -

Er.... welp. Currently my fanfic docket is: Stormlight Archive/Dragon Age Crossover -- ft. Kalarin Stormlight Archive/Dragon Age Crossover Part 2 -- ft. Kalarin and TRAGEDY A Dragon Age thing that has nothing to do with Stormlight Archive whatsoever I have a SUPER SELF INDULGENT post-WoR Shallarin thing that I... might end up finishing at some point??? But it's been a while since I worked on that one. If you're wondering about A Strange Mix of Both thaaaat one's probably not getting finished. My heart got too broke by WoR to keep going. Oh man, that's a difficult one. Maaaaybe Symphonie Fantastique: Mvmt IV Marche au Supplice by Berlioz? I love the non-graduation part of Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar. Symphony No. 2: III. Apollo Unleashed by Tichelli is reaaaly fun in an odd kind of way. Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre is one of the most jaw droppingly gorgeous songs I've ever heard. Also, Eric Whitacre looks like Kelsier. Just sayin'. Scroungers has been on hiatus for over a year now, and chances of it returning are looking... very slim. :C Meanwhile, in terms of RP, I've been playing a Seeker informant barista named Eliane in the Elendel United RP and doing some Dragon Age RP with my Inquisitor, Sylvanni Lavellan. Second fave Cosmere ship.... augh. Vinlend maybe? But Kadolin... And Kalarin. Siribron is cute? And is Shallarin even my fave anymore??? I just kinda like vaguely ship everything without really being committed to anything. I basically just have ships I REALLY DISLIKE and ships that I'm like "eh, yeah, sure why not." My favorite desert is the Hidden Oasis in western Orlais. If you want a REAL desert, the slot canyons of the American Southwest. PS: Yogurt is nasty in all forms and is not a dessert. I hope all of your ice cream melts forever. See answer above. (Aka, yes forever and always.) I was obsessed with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance when I was young. It's suuuuuch a good game, and I kinda created my own world when I was little that was blatantly ripped off from that game. The soundtrack is so good. -
World misconceptions that are difficult to shift.
FeatherWriter replied to ljósmóður's topic in Stormlight Archive
The thing that probably trips me up the most is pronunciations. Redoing all of mine after finding out they were wrong is still difficult, even though I'm someone who reads them aloud a lot. Notable examples, with my bad pronunciations: Renarin (I said RIN-uh-rin instead of ren-AHR-in) - my darling son and I don't even know how to say his name??? Shallan (I said SHAH-lin instead of shuh-LAWN) - girl, why is your name weird like that Jasnah, Jah Keved, Jakamav, Jezrien - all those "J's" are probably supposed to be "Y" sounds right? Adolin (I said AH-doh-lin instead of AY-doh-lin) - I get tripped up on Adonalsium too. Why those long A sounds??? Demoux and Renoux (I said ren-OH and dem-OH instead of ren-OO and dem-OO) - Literally there's no excuse for this one even. I SPEAK FRENCH. It rhymes with genoux and roux??? If it were "oh" it'd be "eaux". French Pronunciation 101 and Feather messed it up. Other kinds of misconceptions are, but not limited to: Forgetting that Shallan is allergic to flowers (She's a botanist who's allergic to flowers, how do I forget that?) That whole thing about Dalinar supposed to be unhandsome (Lol Brandon, you're wrong, Dalinar is definitely a hot dad) Forgetting that Denth is supposed to be a bad guy (But I liiiiiike him) Mraize is probably not actually as sexy as I imagine him (Sorry, meanwhile I'm being garbage over here) Spheres are way smaller than I usually think of them (Thumbnail sized? Really??? That's so tiny!!!) Marsh probably had blonde hair (I forget that Marsh and Kelsier looked similar soooo often) ...okay looking over these I see that "characters are probably not actually as attractive as I imagine them to be" seems to be a trend. Welp. *shrugs* -
So it seems that in my brief time away from 17S, AMAs have become a thing. Just in case anyone was curious about anything, I'll go ahead and throw my empty hat into the ring. Anyone interested in asking some questions? Let's do this, sounds fun!

I'm guessing this was a typo, but I'm amused. Jasnah + Jasnah + Kaladin. Double the Jasnah. Even better. More Jasnah is always better.

EDIT: Stuff seems to be kinda moving on in the time it took to write this out, so I don't mean to drag up old topics, but I'm gonna leave this here anyway. I love Adamir's responses here, and agree wholeheartedly, but I wanna throw in some of my own meta as well. Because, well, it's Renarin. And if there's one thing I love to do, it's write Renarin defenses. Quotes and all, because if I'm gonna do a thing, I'm gonna do it all the way. There's also the point that... Renarin tried to give his Blade away. The points youmake about how Renarin shouldn't be a shardbearer are brought up in the book, and addressed there. Sometimes by Renarin himself! You say he should have refused it on the grounds he wasn't a warrior, and... he did. Adolin insisted. Adolin tells him twice to take the Blade, and the first time, Renarin refuses it, for exactly the reasons you did. Dalinar giving his Plate to Renarin was another instance of that. It wasn't just nepotism: Dalinar believed that with Shardplate, Renarin could be a warrior, because the Plate would compensate for his blood weakness. Again, when Dalinar offers, we see Renarin initially refusing (even though he wants the Plate) on the grounds that it should go to someone more capable. Again, Dalinar insists. Every Shardbearer was once a beginner, just as Renarin was. Renarin's not necessarily a bad fighter, he's just inexperienced. It was too risky for him to learn to fight when he didn't have Shardplate protecting him, but with it, he can be a good fighter. Zahel talks about what a good student he is when Kaladin starts expressing disapproval toward the fact that Renarin got the Shards, defending Adolin and Dalinar's choice to make him a Shardbearer: Three moments where someone said "Renarin does not deserve to have Shards." Two of them were Renarin himself, and the other Kaladin. Each time, these points were refuted in canon by characters we trust in terms of both their relationship with Renarin (judging him worthy) and their experience with Shards (knowing who should hold them.) In terms of keeping secrets from his family, both in regards to his screaming Blade and his visions, there's a lot of very good reasons why he wouldn't tell anyone. It's easy to sit here on the other side and blame him saying "He should have told them what was going on! How dare he!" But from Renarin's perspective, the things that are happening to him are really terrifying, and he has a right to be hesitant in revealing. On the "screaming Shardblade" side, as Adamir said, he doesn't have a good explanation for it other than the fact that he might be going insane. Renarin is autistic, so he already knows that he thinks differently from everyone around him, and the possibility of insanity is a really really scary thing. Think about if that got out: Renarin's "losing his mind" and Dalinar freaks out during highstorms? That kind of fodder is exactly the sort of thing their House's enemies would use to tear them down. "Look, House Kholin is mentally unstable, they need to be removed from power." Obviously that's not something he'd want to reveal, even to his family. He already dislikes that they see him as weaker, and he doesn't want to add to that at all. In addition to that, the other part of his secret is that he's seeing the future. Also known as an extremely taboo action in Vorinism. Against his will, he is experiencing visions that his religion says are of the Voidbringers and actually evil. He thinks that whatever is happening to him is against what is morally right, but there's nothing that he can do about it other than make sure no one finds out. When everyone thinks that Dalinar is the one who is carving the glyphs, everyone around him seems to be extremely unsettled by the idea, especially Adolin. Considering how close Renarin and Adolin are, I have no doubt that Adolin talks about how uncomfortable he is with the idea of their dad seeing the future with Renarin, who simply has to sit there and think "I can never tell, because look how awful everyone thinks this is." In a way, it's almost as though he's "closeted" about his powers. Renairn has something outside of his control that his religion is vehemently opposed to. He keeps it a secret because he is worried that his family and the people around him might hate him if they knew. The only reason he "came out" about his powers is that he was dragged into a vision against his will in the presence of witnesses. He was lucky at the time that there were other respected Radiants like Shallan and Kaladin, therefore his powers might not be hated now, since they are (supposedly) tied to Surgebinding. But before Shallan and Kaladin were known? Someone seeing the future would probably be denounced by the church and hated by everyone who knew. In that situation, can you really think that he'd come forward and reveal himself? Even to his family? Someone who has more determination and self confidence like Dalinar learns to deal with the things that are happening to him and the fact that they are becoming known around the camps. Dalinar is also a mature adult who has years of experience, especially in being a public figure and dealing with unpopularity. Renarin on the other hand has been shown to be extremely insecure and self-doubting, already feeling like he's a failure to his family and he would want to hide anything that might make that perception worse. Especially when he's on the cusp of possibly proving that he could be a fighter, now that he's got Plate. Alright, I could also go into the whole thing with why he jumped into the fight, but for one, this post is outlandishly long. Secondly, I've kinda already written that essay and it's over here: See, "Renarin as Brave?" section. You know, sometimes, I think I should stop writing crazy long essays about Renarin but for one, they're fun to write and people seem to like them so why not.

@Shroom - Much as it pains me to agree with my sworn nemesis, you're right about me probably being too callous and expecting others to be the same. I'm pretty thick skinned when it comes to disagreements, but you're right, not everyone is. I guess what I was trying to encourage was just... For the people who get really upset when they're downvoted, try to remember that it's not always meant to be mean. I saw someone describe downvotes as "getting a rock thrown at you out of nowhere" but I think when people are giving downvotes, they aren't trying to their rocks. I think the people who use downvotes are the ones who don't see them as really mean, just disagreement. @axcellence: It's come up and been discussed before, but from what I've seen in other discussions, the admins feel reputation levels would be kind of pointless of they were only positive. If you can only gain them, then rep is little more than another sign of his long you've been around or how much you post. Comparisons to Facebook came about too, if I remember. How people always ask Facebook to add a dislike button with the like button. Shroom kinda said it well with, the rei system is already kinda trivial, but getting rid of downvotes kind of makes it pointless. We might as well do away with the system entirely, but I don't think either of those things will happen.

Yeah, this thing with Shallan isn't something that I tend to press my point on. It's more personal. Sometimes characters do things and you're like "THAT WAS HORRIBLE AND ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS THEM IS WRONG BECAUSE THEY'RE TERRIBLE." I've had some of those and those are some fun discussions. But that's... not the way I feel about what happened. It was a lot more of "I had personally invested a lot of stuff into these two characters and seeing them not getting along hurt me a lot." I still have trouble forgiving Shallan for what happened, but I don't expect that there were many other people who were also upset by her. It's a lot more of a personal issue for me.

WARNING: THIS POST GOT LONG Alright, I'll throw the mod hat on for a sec. Admins have already addressed this in site rules. Quote from the rules post: "Rep is anonymous, feel free to use it. Don't be a troll." Those are your site rules in regards to downvotes. After that, your personal choice to use or not use them is just that: personal. The thing to remember is that if someone is breaking the rules that needs to be reported, rather than downvoted. (I mean, if it's bad, you can downvote them too, but please report any breaches in site etiquette.) If you think downvotes are mean and don't want to use them, alright! I think that's really nice of you and you probably care a lot about not hurting people's feelings. If you're a person who wants to use rep as a policing system to encourage some posts and discourage others, okay that's fine too. If you're downvoting people spitefully because you hate them, then that's not okay and you should stop that. (mod hat off) I get downvoted quite a bit. It happens. I mean, I can see that my post above there was downvoted (because it shows up in my rep screen, even though it's at zero right now). I mean, obviously that's okay. I expected it even. I can't exactly say "yes you can downvote people you disagree with" and then get upset that someone downvoted me for disagreeing with me. Though I am amused by how meta that thought is. For the most part, I understand when I get downvoted. Usually I'm thinking as I type the post out: "Okay, I feel like people might dislike this, but I feel like it needs to be said." When the downvotes come, okay. That's the price I paid for having an unpopular opinion, and I'll take them. All part of the discussion process. If I'm getting a really high amount of downvotes that tells me "oh, maybe I overstepped and need to apolgize and back off." But one or two? That just shows me people read it, honestly. I agree with the former, and disagree with the latter. If people disagree with what I say, they should be able to express that, I think. If I'm posting a minority opinion, then sure, maybe downvotes will come, but that's not a bad thing. It just shows me that there's people who disagree. Downvotes, for the most part, I think are used as a method of disagreement. At least, that's how I interpret them when they're used against me. If something needs to be said, I'm willing to take the downvotes for it. If I think it's not worth starting a disagreement, then I'll hold off and not post it. I don't need my posts to be universally agreed with or even universally liked. I don't think that's realistic or feasable. I don't take getting downvoted to heart. If you express an opinion, someone's probably going to disagree with you. Sometimes they write that out in a response. Sometimes they just downvote you. I don't follow the same logic of, "people who disagree with me are welcome, but only if they don't use this one button to do it." To me, getting a downvote is the same as getting a reply where someone says "actually, I disagree and think you're wrong." Sometimes they just don't want to type that out. Maybe all they felt they needed to convey was "I disagree and think you're wrong." Or maybe this person is saying "what you wrote hurt me and made me upset, but I don't want to reveal that publically by writing a reply." I've had friends who say "This thread is really bothering me, but I don't want to start a thing with a response. I'll just downvote to let them know I disagree." Personal philosophy: I hardly ever use downvotes. They're really only for when a post actually upsets me. Unless I feel like someone's saying things that are hurtful (even unintentionally) and out of line, I'll just use a reply. Sometimes though, I do feel the need to hit that button. I'll admit that. Like the rules said, the system was made to be used and sometimes people say things on the site that I really wish they wouldn't. It's not a substitute for a discussion, but it's another mode of reply. Rep is just a number. It goes up, and it goes down. I like getting upvotes because it says people think I'm right or that they appreciated what I added. Downvotes say that there's people who don't like what I'm saying. That doesn't mean I'm going to stop saying it, just because someone disliked it. If it needed to be said, it needed to be said, and I'm gonna probably stand behind what I said, but it's good to see that there's people who don't agree. If I'm getting a bunch of downvotes, then that shows me I did something wrong and need to tone it back.

Finally bought myself a PS4, and Destiny was the first thing I bought. Class: Warlock Sub-class: Sunsinger Race: Female Awoken Clan: -- Level: 20ish? Weapon layout: Scout Rifle + Sniper Rifle + Rocket Launcher Favorite enemy: Cabal More recently, I've been using hand cannons just because I keep running into Rares and can't quite bring myself to let such a nice weapon languish, but I'm much more fond of accurate and good distance over up close or rapid fire. If you let me sit across the map and headshot enemies, I will be so happy. (However, this playstyle does make me pretty GARBAGE at multiplayer, unfortunately.) Meanwhile, Mars is absolutely my favorite planet by far. First of all: DESERTS. Deserts are soooo cool. I could play desert levels all day everyday. The Cabal is so fun to play against for me, too. Big and slow means I can keep distance pretty well and make those shots count. Hit 'em in the head and watch 'em fall! Hive is definitely my least favorite enemies. THRALLS. THEY KILL ME EVERY TIME. Every time a swarm of Thralls show up you can expect that I'm screaming in panicked and frustrated terror as they chew on my face. Wizards too. Those shields, plus the fact that they're really good at running and hiding until they come back makes them really annoying for me to kill. You've gotta stay on them and not let them run, but they're also pretty lethal at close range, which makes just all kinds of trouble. Occasionally I'll find an annoying fellow sniper and get into a snipe off -- lookin' at you Hobgoblins and Vandals -- but usually I can take care of them before they cause too much trouble. Thralls though. Can't staaaaand the thralls.

*takes off her mod hat too* I also like the anonymous downvote upvote system, and I think some of the other supporters have talked about it being a good general consensus of how the fandom feels about a certain post. However, I also like that there isn't a "right" or wrong way to use them. I've seen some people talk about "you should only use downvotes for certain things" but, there aren't any hard and fast rules about what deserves a downvote and what does not. Aside from stalking a user's posts and downvoting them all until you hit the limit, which is definitely downvote abuse and should be reported, you're allowed to downvote posts for any reason you'd like. Maybe you think it's harsh, or rude, or inappropriate. Okay, you can downvote that -- though remember that if something is breaking the rules, that's what the "Report" button is for rather than the downvote button. Downvotes can be "I disagree with your opinion" if you want them to be. Downvotes can be for petty reasons too, though of course downvoting people for superficial reasons is pretty mean and I'd hope people are being considerate. You can do it though, it's not breaking the rules. I know, I personally used to a lot more hesitant about downvoting. I pretty much never used them ever. As I became a more active poster, however, and interacted with more people on the site -- especially other friends who used the site -- I started downvoting where I felt it was warranted. If I didn't like the way a post was assuming things or maybe I just didn't like the person's opinion to the point of actively being upset. If a post made me angry or hurt, even if it didn't break rules, I'd downvote it. To me, a downvote tells the poster "Hey, a user didn't like what you just said!" If I really didn't like something, the downvotes let me say that. Now, I try not to hit and run. If I'm going to use a downvote on a discussion, I'll try to respond respectfully to it as well in a reply. I don't always say "Hey, I downvoted you, and it was for this reason!" but I'll usually explain that I disagree with what they said and try to have a polite discussion. Sometimes if someone is really freaking out about getting a downvote and it was me, I'll send a private message explaining, but I usually don't. I don't necessarily think it's necessary, especially if I'm in a discussion in public already.

How Many Sharders Have Signed Copies of Books?
FeatherWriter replied to Elithanathile's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I took a huge stack to the release of WoR to get signed, so I've got quite a few signed now! I ordered my copy of The Emperor's Soul online and got it signed that way! I've got few that have cosmere hints in them, but I think my favorite one is Brandon signing my copy of L'Empire Ultime (The Final Empire in French) with Combien coute le chien dans les fenetre? as the only French phrase he knew. ("How much is that dog in the window.") I was excessively amused! -
