  1. I think she has to have come through an oathgate. Either the one on the shattered plains, or maybe she opened the one in New Natanan (there is one there right?). If she could Elsecall directly to Urithiru wouldn't she have done that previously and not been so concerned with finding the path to Urithiru on the shattered plains? So my thought is she came through an oathgate. Hopefully she came with Hoid since he found her when she came back to the PR in the epilogue to WOR. I think i agree with others who think she is likely surrounded by family and people she knows since they would have swarmed her thinking she was dead. I can't believe we have to still wait one more week! Gah!!!!
  2. I saw that too. I am a little concerned by this, wouldn't this open her up to some of Odium's influence? Or am i just channeling the star wars universe here and how hate opens you up to the dark side of the force?
  3. I got Jasnah which i am ok with. But to be honest i don't think there was a question asked that provided an answer that i felt totally fit me. So none of them really felt spot on with me. But in the meantime i guess I can get behind knowing my worth and intelligence and refusing to bend to others beliefs.
  4. It is interesting to see everyone'es recommendations. My first Sanderson books were the Mistborn Era 1 books. Then i went to Warbreaker and Elantris then SA came out and i jumped into them. Then i read individual novellas like Emperor's soul and shadows for silence in the secrets of hell. Then i did Mistborn Era 2 followed by Arcanum Unbounded. All of the books are awesome so you will have tons to read. Since you already did SA, your approach with going to Warbreaker then Mistborn is good. After that i think Elantris would be good to jump into along with the Mistborn Era 2 (they are just fun and you might catch some stuff that connects you to ideas in SA). After those reading Arcanum Unbounded would be great for you, Mistborn: Secret History will give you a lot of interesting background for the cosmere in general. Then the other novellas and short stories will just help build knowledge and appreciation for all that is going on in the cosmere. Have fun getting caught up. Also, i loved the Reckoners as another Sanderson series that was great, but it is not cosmere if i recall correctly.
  5. @Calderis I was thinking the same thing! Poor @ryshadium90 fingers (and pinkies in particular) must be confusing to comprehend for a hoofed animal.
  6. The more i think about this i think there is a really interesting point being made by @Calderis. In one of the books i think i recall them mentioning that in Alethi society assassination is ok as long as it can't be traced back to you. So in Adolin's situation by cleaning up the scene and hiding the evidence there is a chance this doesn't become the huge issue we expect it to because it might not be that huge for other Alethi. We might just be attaching more of our real world justice philosophy to this situation than we should. If assassination is acceptable (assuming i remembered that right) then really there is no difference in Adolin killing Sadeas than a hired assassin so long as he doesn't get caught. If Sadeas' group find evidence and can tie it to Adolin then we might have the problem we all are envisioning (i don't remember the scene enough to even think if there was any special detail that could be used to tie Adolin to the crime. Did Sadeas' guards see Adolin? If it is just blood and a knife wound how do they narrow it down to specifically Adolin?). In any event this will be interesting to see how it plays out.
  7. You'll have to excuse @Shqueeves, he is a little slow, it only took him 5 pages into the thread to conclude everyone was stupid.
  8. "But as for the Bondsmiths, they had members only three, which number was not uncommon for them; nor did they seek to increase this by great bounds, for during the times of Madasa, only one of their order was in continual accompaniment of Urithiru and its thrones. Their spren was understood to be specific, and to persuade them to grow to the magnitude of the other orders was seen as seditious. —From Words of Radiance, chapter 16, page 14" I know there has been discussions on the forums about bondsmiths, how there are only 3, and that they are tied to specific spren (which is why there are typically only 3), and which spren those might be, so maybe this has been discussed and i just failed at searching out the proper thread but i thought i would ask if anyone knows the answer to a question. 10 is an extremely significant (maybe even considered Holy) number on Roshar. We have 10 Heralds, 10 Surges, 10 orders of KR, 10 essences, 10 gemstones, 10 months in a year, 10 Silver Kingdoms, 10 Alethi Princedoms, 10 Highprinces, 10 warcamps, 10 heartbeats for a shardblade to form. Given this focus on the number 10, does anyone know why Brandon would simply settle on 3 bondsmiths as the typical number of bondsmiths? Why not choose 10? If they are tied to specific spren why couldn't there be 10 spren? Just curious if anyone has discussed this before? It seems like it would fit properly to have devised the order to have 10 be the typical number of members given the emphasis on 10 in Roshar.
  9. @maxal and @calderis that was an interesting discussion on intelligence. I think you are essentially getting at that people communicate and learn in different ways. There are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners/communicators. Auditory people learn by listening and talking, visual people learn by watching how things are done or reading, and kinesthetic people learn by doing an activity themselves. My best friend is a terrible test taker. But he is great at understanding things when he can use his hands and do it himself. He is an electrician and knows practically how to do the job. He just performs poorly on written tests. There are plenty of people he would compete with on jobs that could ace the exam but couldn’t actually do the job when hired because they couldn’t practically apply the book material in real world situations. The points you noted where Adolin can't focus on his history lectures shows he is not auditory. He is much more of i think a kinesthetic/visual perso whereas Renarin is more of an auditory person. People need to be taught differently to learn things in a way that click for them. When i used to train in martial arts my instructors tried to hit on all of these methods to help people learn the curriculum. They would say how to do a move, while showing how to do it, then have us practice it. I never thought Adolin was not intelligent. He seems to have a knack for strategy. IIRC correctly from the stories Adolin also seemed to have an aptitude for politics. He read Sadeas well and knew Sadeas was trying to undermine Dalinar. Reading a political situation is not easy, it takes a different type of thinking and intelligence and shouldn't be discounted. His understanding of politics i think shows he is intelligent in other ways than your simple book smart, rote memorization intelligence.
  10. I have WOR on my nook. When i found out he was changing the scene i tried to get on my nook and see how the original version was written. But as soon as i opened the book the new version had updated so i didn't get to write down the exact original ending. I honestly can't remember how that was written just the concept. Given i can't remember i am not overly invested one way or the other. Though i would like to be able to see the original wording at some point to compare to the new version and see how different it was outside of the concept of what happened. Maybe seeing that would make me feel more one way or the other. But for now I don't feel strongly one way or the other. Like others have said i just hope it doesn't happen more throughout the series.
  11. Perhaps a Toastlonformer? Given your proclivity for torturing bread, are you owned by Nan Balat? He does have a thing for torturing cremlings.
  12. I have looked at this for a few minutes and i agree with CaptainRyan. I think her hand is just held like it is loosely closed. The dark grey line immediately under her thumb looks like the dark grey from other parts of her clothing so i think it is just her clothing and not a string. Then the shimmering in what you describe as a claw is just like above on her torso/waist area with the red and shiny look. To me the 3 claws just look like the fabric is folded over and looks different because the fabric folds differently on that area of her body as opposed to her waist/torso area. The far right of the claws seems to merge into the rest of the fabric that drapes down and end near her feet. So looking at all that it just seems like clothing to me. Also i don't think they would need to show her with a fake soulcaster. she doesn't need it and if she is wielding a shardblade in the open it is likely people in world would realize she is a KR and so she wouldn't need to keep pretending she uses a soulcaster. But like you said, who knows if who is correct and it is probably not that consequential.
  13. I typically miss the cosmere connections in the stories. But Nightblood was one of the few i caught right away. Then once i realized it was Nightblood i figured Vasher was in there somewhere. I didn't get confirmation until seeing threads on the forum stating who it was and it made sense. One of the only other things i caught was Iyatil being a world hopper. Granted it wasn't until i read Bands of Morning recently and saw people like her and was like "Hey! there is someone in WOR that is like the people i am reading about in BOM!"
  14. Lol, mooks sound similar to redshirts in tv shows. The minor characters who always die (though i tend to think of redshirts as more like the disposable good guys since in shows like star trek they are the usually the minor fleet officer personnel who die).
  15. Lol, when i read @Calderis' first post i thought "the next post is going to be by @Extesian. Sure enough when i scrolled down it was there. You guys work well together and do an awesome job putting information and theories out there. Keep it up.
  16. Thank you that is very helpful. This makes me wonder exactly what this surge does? You are not doing nuclear bangs, but if you split the bonds of molecules what does that do that leads to smoldering rock and burning corpses?
  17. The reason i thought about explosions was from the description in the Prelude in WOK. "Smoke curled from the occasional patches of growth or heaps of burning corpses. Even some sections of rock smoldered. The Dustbringers had done their work well." Since abrasion is their other surge and that lets you get slick that led me to believe division causes some kind of burning/explosion. Are there other WOB on this? The link you sent me is someone's paraphrasing of what was said by Brandon at an event. Having a verbatim WOB would be like a primary source to use. I am more inclined to value in book descriptions for information to theorize about if there is no WOB verbatim.
  18. My first thought was in the realm of transportation. I could see essentially planes being powered by Gravitation or like high speed rail systems powered by Abrasion. Those could be forms of mass transportation. I am not sure if these would be needed given the surge of transportation (but i have it in my mind that this takes a lot of stormlight given the amount needed to transport a lot of people through the oathgate). So maybe if transportation uses a lot of stormlight these would be ways of transporting that wouldn't use as much stormlight and maybe could work for shorter distance travel. The other area i thought of was warfare. Though we don't know what exactly Division does if it does something like blows stuff up couldn't you make a fabrial that essentially was like a grenade and throw it into a group of enemies and blow them up (Since presumably a Dustbringer doesn't blow up then the fabrial also could be designed where it doesn't blow up but built in a way that causes an explosion while not damaging the fabrial and then it is reusable)? Also, i was thinking that maybe you could use a reverse lashing in gravitation and throw essentially a gravity bomb. Maybe it could pull on the armor and weapons of a group of enemies and you could chuck it right before your army hit their lines to throw them off balance and then your army could crash into the enemy with less resistance. Those were just a few of my thoughts. It is hard to think of all the possibilities because we don't know much about many of the surges. So until we see more it makes it hard to think of what we can do with all of the surges in fabrial-tech. But interesting topic to consider.
  19. Life before death The Radiant seeks to defend life, always. He never kills unnecessarily, and never risks his own life for frivolous reasons. Living is harder than dying. The Radiant's duty is to live. Strength before weakness All men are weak at some time in their lives. The Radiant protects those who are weak, and uses his strength for others. Strength does not make one capable of rule; it makes one capable of service. Journey before destination There are always several ways to achieve a goal. Failure is preferable to winning through unjust means. Protecting ten innocents is not worth killing one. In the end, all men die. How you lived will be far more important to the Almighty than what you accomplished. I feel like i needed to add this to the discussion of the oaths for the sake of completeness. This is the description of the 1st ideal and what it means that Teft gives to Kaladin. I think this largely is where we get the debate from. Though i have seen great points about this in this thread and the other about this being the interpretation of the 1st ideal by the Envisagers and so there could be more flexibility. Plus the words of Brandon give a lot to think about in how flexible the oaths are. Thanks to @Extesian and @Calderis for their contributions to the thread and the discussion on this issue.
  20. I interpreted the Duck similar to Krandacth. I always just thought it was battle instincts that kicked in when he didn't see his enemy he knew he had to get out of the way of a likely strike. I read the "How...What could he do..?" a little differently. Mind i haven't read the whole scene in a while so my recollection could be off, but from memory i thought the question was more asking what Szeth could do? I think this is the 2nd time Adolin has faced him. So i think he is still trying to figure out what Szeth can do and so internally he is asking how Szeth wasn't there when he came through the tarp and what else could he do? My thought is he is asking this question so if he could figure it out maybe he could figure out a plan to fight Szeth. Then after thinking a second he kind of thinks nothing can beat Szeth.
  21. I will steal a line from JK Rowling about people burning her Harry Potter books... If @Extesian, @Ammanas get part of the profits they can say: We've "still got your money, so by all means borrow" our "lighter."
  22. My only thought about this is there are a couple of odd points then. IIRC Taln gets lucid for a short period once Shallan does some lightweaving near him and i thought he made a comment about her being of one Ishar's Knights (but my recollection might be off on the comment). Then he acts absurdly fast to catch the darts Iyatil shoots at Amaram and catches them. I don't think a regular insane person who was swapped would have a reason to, or could, catch the darts and would know what lightweaving was.
  23. If you could summon it at a distance from you could you summon it where the blade actually appears in the physical realm piercing another person? That might make for possible creative uses of a shardblade. Maybe if you are in battle and you see a friend too far away to help you de-summon and re-summon to kill the individual threatening your friend? Or a shardblade wielding assassin could do that from far away to not give away their identity. I guess this would all a depend on how far away you could summon your blade if you could summon it away from your hand. Just some thoughts.
  24. Very interesting theory Calderis. I like it. When i start doing my rereads of WOK and WOR in a few weeks i am going to pay particular attention to the scenes with Taln to see if there is any other hints in the wording of the books that can lend evidences for the theory. Upvote for you sir!
  25. As Adolin, Dalinar, and Kaladin are my 3 favorite characters and Dalinar and Kaladin have their own books i would vote Adolin since i would be happy to see more screen time for him. If not Adolin since he has had a fair amount of viewpoints, i could be intrigued by seeing novellas for a few other characters too. Teft would be interesting if we could get more background on him and his past. I would also like to learn more about Iyatil, since she appears to have ties to cosmere worlds other than Roshar.
