Is Syl special, and what could that mean?
Rockbud replied to Lookalike's topic in Stormlight Archive
There is a scene in WoR (I think the first time Shallan and Pattern talk inside the Wagon on the way to the shattered plains) where he mentions (something like) a lot of Spren being unbonded and retreating to the Cognitive realm, while others died. I'll try find the quote, I may be wrong... -
I actually asked him about Adonalsium at the recent London signing, and the summarised reply was that Brandon hasn't decided what it was yet (being or force). For context: I asked him if you could have a good conversation with Adonalsium, and it got RAFO'd with the above explaination.

Go for it, man. I'm more a lurker, so I'll be happy just reading theories from the shadows.

As is pretty typical with me; this is slightly off topic: has anyone mused about what night blood looks like in the Cognitive/spiritual realm? Spren have different appearances based on the realmatic attunement of the viewer. Eg. Lift.
-
I remember it as referring to the steps that were crafted for Heralds. I like the theory, and would definitely complement their being able to be bound indiscriminately. It would also suggest they were important enough to tip the balance. Overall though, there's not a lot of info about dawnshards. It wouldnt take much to twist all our assumptions about them.

Could the exception be the splintered bits of Honors power in the Cognitive realm in the form of Spren? That's going to have me thinking...

I think Stormlight is just a form of investiture that manifests mainly in the physical realm and thus can be interacted with by inhabitants of the physical realm (eg. For light), rather than the cognitive or spiritual such as the Dor. To channel investiture in all cases involves spirit web interaction, not just contact with investiture. I'd always figured 'Rust and Ruin' to just be a natural curse, given the prevalence of metals on Scandrial, but there might be more to it. I'm still not sold on the Autonomy/Odium team up. It just seems to go against the Autonomy intent, and we saw in HoA that Shard holders have trouble acting against their intent.

Shadows of Self Tour: London Forbidden Planet signing

Maybe it strips away requirements for its use (location based aon's for example) and supplies a direct link to the Dor? -
Relating meeting Brandon to Cosmere experiences
Rockbud posted a topic in General Brandon Discussion
I went to my first signing today and between euphoria and regret at not having asked better questions I compared the meeting to taking a dip in the Well of Ascension: having all those answers so close but no way to get at them!... and then it was gone :/ How would you compare a confrontation with the man himself to events in the Cosmere? -

Shadows of Self Tour London Day 1 (17-Oct-15)
Rockbud replied to Havoc's topic in Events and Signings
Hey guys, I'm planning on going to the 7pm signing tonight in London (my first time!). A few questions: 1. Are signings always really busy, ie. Need to get there really early? I finish work around 6 :/ 2. Were there copies of Elantris 10 anniversary Ed on sale on Saturday (or exclusively SoS)? If so it gives me hope for picking up a copy to be signed Thanks! Can't wait! -

Does anyone else die a little everyday?
Rockbud replied to Kaladin al'Thor's topic in General Brandon Discussion
This is a plug, but I made a widget for my phone that shows Brandon's writing progress. It was great for the first few weeks that Stormlight 3 appeared, but that 21% has been there so long it's starting to meld with my wall paper...- 58 replies

I found the part that suggested eating a bit of a lerasium alloy might grant a completely different set of 16 powers was more striking. Did love the interlacing of roshar and sel magic as comparisons too though.

Just tacking this on: early-mid WoK its noted Renarin takes a while to reply in conversation and it makes people feel uneasy. What if this delay is due to him considering the possible futures based on his possible replies? Will find quote later if this causes confusion

Facepalm-worthy Moments during Readings
Rockbud replied to Patrick Star's topic in Stormlight Archive
1. This is very close to how I pictured Shard plate, and I was so happy when I found these illustrations confirming it's awesomeness. I did have a short moment of disappointing face palm when I saw other illustrations of it being very similar to boring regular armour, but this makes me happy. 2. As an audio book listener I don't have to question name pronunciations, but it did annoy me at the beginning of WoR when the Thalin accent is changed (presumably after some executive decision) to a more French accent, from the light Irish that had been used for WoK and the first few chapters of WoR. (A negative of listening rather than reading is you have no idea how to spell anything). -
Re: what might be required to revive a dead blade; there might be a clue in that they can be heard screaming when a bonded individual touches them. Is this because that individual has a corresponding spirit web, if incompatible/occupied? How about the dueling arena scene where hearing the blades accusations of murder almost make a normal (for all we know) guy loose his marbles? Either way this seems the greatest interaction anyone has had with a dead blade so far. It might be a key step to bringing back the spren.
-
Do the spren oaths pre-date the Heralds organisation of the early surgebinders? If not, was this the result of the bondsmith radiants actions? (sorry for not knowing the name) Also, if a bondsmith can affect the nature of spren bonds, what changes might have come into effect after generations of bondsmiths? Could a rogue bondsmith have messed with the radiance leading to the recreance?

Re: mechanical allomancy; Rosharian Fabrials are investiture powered devices that in a limited way imitate the native surges. Why couldn't there be an equivalent technology for other magic systems that works on the same principles?

Slightly off topic, but its also suspicious where Renarin gets the white rock he uses to write with. I'm also curious about the box he plays with...

Just twigged that where spren and seons are splinters that attain sentience, divine breath bond with the dead, and perhaps share their sentience that way. This might account for the memory loss? Also (having trouble quoting on mobile) there might be a difference between holding a breah and holding Stormlight: if a returned could take in Stormlight there's nothing to suggest they'd be any better at holding it in than a (human) surgebinder.

Given how much I got twisted around reading the first Mistborn books, I'm going to be sceptical of any assumptions I have after just Alloy... I'm fully expecting plot points to be turned on their heads and wild cards throwing our theories way off.

I just read in a feruchemy post that neither allomancy or hemalurgy was known before the conflict between presuravtion and ruin: a break in balance. Since the surges are believed to come from both honor and cultivation, perhaps if the surges were no longer manifest from two shards combined we'd see different powers emerge?
