Book Recommendation for Sanderson Fan
Kairos replied to Dubisx's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Late to the party, but here are my recs: Tolkien: as others have already said, the foundation of fantasy. I've read LotR, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion yearly for ages, and it never gets old. Megan Whalen Turner- the Thief. This series doesn't get much hype, but it's one of my absolute favourites. The worldbuilding is insane, the characters are amazing, and the writing.... while I really enjoy Sanderson's writing, Turner beats him here. Her craft... it's astounding. The story is pretty simple, similar to Emperor's Soul, a thief is recruited from prison to do the impossible. The first half of the book is pretty slow, lots of travelling and talking. But it's a short book, and when you hit the end, it's time for a reread. The series as a whole expands from there, gaining larger and larger perspective, and interweaving religion, politics, and characters. Go read it, you won't regret it. Note: it is either classified as children's or young adult, but I don't think that label really matters. -
Thanks, it was actually just sheer happenstance, I was making flashcards, and he kept coming up. That's neat to know the Belarusian term. Thanks, I don't think I'm near that level yet, but I'll remember that.

When you find yourself using realmatic terminology in an essay on biotechnology. -
Guessing you meant ждун there. I'm taking Russian, and found him. It just seemed so appropriate.

3 seems like the best reasoning there. I like how that works. Although, can one move cognitive aspects? I mean, I guess one can, but if you picked up the cognitive aspect of a stick in the cognitive realm, does the physical stick move or stay in one place? Is it even effected?

[OB] Renarin is not Evil, but...(Edgedancers spoilers)
Kairos replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I was under that impression too. Having it be the resonance makes sense with those two surges. And they could be so quiet about it because telling the future could change it. I wonder if it has any parallels with atium usage, although it appears to be more farsighted and less useful overall. Although, this description of Truthwatchers gives me really bad flashbacks to Aes Sedai. I knew I didn't like Renarin much, but... I really hope he opens up more. Or turns evil. Or does something to become more clear. -

When you're prepping for a hurricane, and you keep thinking "Is this what people feel like when a highstorm comes? I guess it's easier when it's only one direction." And then you get bogged down wondering how they deal with everyday life like that. -

The Poirot one... so true. But you missed Tommy and Tuppence: [spoiler/] A guy and a girl constantly find government conspiracies, then talk vaguely until something happens that solves a mystery. [/spoiler]

ENTIRE COSMERE OPTIONED FOR MOVIES
Kairos replied to PallonianFire's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Thoughts: I would far prefer to see Mistborn done well first. It's a far more natural lead-in to the Cosmere, as others have said. That said, if they're doing an Asian cast(which would make sense since the company is Chinese, plus it should help their budget), it would make sense to do a series that has what we would perceive as Asian characters. The obvious choice is the Emperor's Soul. That said, if they do SA: I could see a couple approaches. They could make a really gritty movie focusing on Kaladin and Dalinar, or they could go the book route and keep Shallan in there as well. Personally, I think that the Kaladin route makes the most sense. Shallan's arc in the book just would not fit cinematically with Kaladin's. It works in the book, but wouldn't on screen as is. Unless, they tone down a lot of Shallan's parts, focus on the intrigue, speed through her finding Jasnah, zoom in on the threat in the pages, and the looming threat of the Voidbringers. Final conclusion: Szeth's assassination of Gavilar would be so amazing if done well. I would pay to watch just that. -
First off, totally missed Bastille's letter. I was in shock. Like, serious shock. Could not believe it. I mean, I could, it sounded like Alcatraz, but seriously. Cruel. Then I thought to check with all of you wonderful people. So relieved. Awesome puns, great meta, loved the footnotes, so many great references. The chapter four wanting to add an extra o to his name was great. Bet Brandon had to fight his editors on that one. List of ways to die was amazing. Anyone else catch balefire on there?

Because there was no religion. Without a religion promising an afterlife, it becomes infinitely harder to persuade people to die for you. -

When you can't stand Hunger Games: Catching Fire, because their revolution is so far inferior to Kelsier's plan. Also, when you realise that religion is a necessity for successful revolution. When all you can think of during Divergent is how easily a Coinshot could destroy everyone. -
Thought you guys might be interested to learn that Vin and Elend are in the match this year. I figure they could probably use some of us to properly discuss their abilities. Also, if you're one of the crazy Wheel of Time people(like me), Mat Cauthon is also in it.

There's not nearly enough salt about [Secret History Spoilers]
Kairos replied to FeatherWriter's topic in Mistborn
Honestly, Kelsier coming back just fits. His motivation, what he does, how he fights against the way reality works...it's almost inspirational, if it wasn't Kelsier. Honestly I felt like this was so much more fitting than (Stormlight WoR spoiler) After all, Kelsier is the Survivor. -
What better way to prevent Allomancers finding it, than have it explode from water contact?
-
I could see lithium. I just got hung up on the fact that it reacted to water, and assumed it was sodium.
-
Spoilers for the end of Bands. So, Ettsmetal. Personally, I think it's Sodium, but obviously we have a new metal. So, how does this line up with the overall scheme? Simple, it's the opposite of Aluminium. We've always thought that Duralumin was Aluminium's pair, but think about it a bit more, Duralumin doesn't exactly mirror Aluminium's abilities. Duralumin enhances, Aluminium destroys. My theory is that there's another quadrant(quintuplant?) on the chart. Sodium creates Investiture, Aluminium destroys it. This means there should be 3 more metals, probably alloys of Sodium, two more temporal metals, and one more spiritual which should mirror Duralumin in that it would reduce Investiture, probably by slowing the burn of a metal. Thoughts? Also, this definitely confirms the Epic God Metal theory.

Scadrial/Roshar First off, of course I would want to be a full compounder. Who wouldn't? But that seems way overpowered. Second option: Mistborn/Nightwatcher Radiant. Hear me out on this one. I want Lift's ability. If I have to spike her to get it, so be it. But metabolising food as Stormlight? That is the absolute best source of Investiture in the Cosmere. You'd get the healing abilities of Stormlight, with merely regular food as the source. And if that isn't awesome enough, add Mistborn metals. Really, nothing beats that.

Your first & favourite Sanderson novel
Kairos replied to Young Bard's topic in General Brandon Discussion
First book I read by Sanderson was Elantris. (okay, so I read WoT first, but that doesn't really count). My favourite is Mistborn: TFE, which I read second. So, I confirm your theory(if you count the second Sanderson book as the first if the first is Elantris). Although, Alcatraz is very, very close behind Mistborn.... -
I really thought she was going to use Wax's earring for a second there. I still think she might in the future. It is, after all, what I would do(probably what most of us Sharders would do).
