That was only the Stonewards and the Windrunners, and maybe not even all of them.

I'm still not sure what exactly Brandon is doing with the Old Magic. It seems relatively certain that the Nightwatcher is indeed a spren, and behaves and is regarded similarly to the Stormfather, which is known to be a spren. He can directly affect storms, and apparently the Nightwatcher can somehow use abilities to widely interpret and implement boons accompanied with curses. I don't see how this could possibly align with the rules of Surgebinding or Voidbinding, so it seems plausible that some ability pertaining to powerful spren that we just don't have sufficient information to understand yet. After getting that slight tangent out of the way, there doesn't really seem to be any specific resurgence in use of the Old Magic, though perhaps it is becoming more popular with people and we don't have the context to see that yet. Voidbinding, though... that will be interesting. The sections of listener songs in the chapter pretexts in WoR indicate that the forms of power are both numerous and deadly. Still have no clue in Damnation what the Unmade are. Some kind of spren, perhaps?

So we have a pretty good idea of the Heralds and the Honorblades now, but what information do we have of the Dawnsingers and Dawnshards? What were they? My best guess is that they're actually Shardbearers that do manual labor rather than fight Voidbringers. I think the Dawnsingers were servants of Honor, like the Heralds, but they used their Dawnshards (Shardtools, maybe?) to help the general populace. If I remember correctly, the Palanaeum in Kharbranth was reportedly built by the Dawnsingers. This would make sense, then. Does anyone else have other theories or information that I missed?

Hello! Here's an upvote. I hope you like it here, and I'm very curious to know how much of the cosmere you know about as of now. Which of his books have you read?

Metals And Mists: Questions On Allomantic Fundamentals
Shattered replied to Moogle's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Just read the explanation over one more time. The reason that metals only allow for one ability to be used it because it is in a solid state. The Mist, as a gas, is fluid, and does not have the same restriction. I assume this relates the the fact that Investiture is affected based on the body's interpretation of the power of a Shard. Since the Mist isn't held to any specific shape, it doesn't grant and single specific ability. It grants all of them in a spectacular way, due to its high potency. -
The issue with this organization is that it is far easier to fight those who practice Metallic Arts if you do, too. As I believe is mentioned in FE, hazekillers aren't really supposed to kill Allomancers. They are typically guards that are used to stall until other Allomancers can come and do the actual fighting. If they were to actually try and kill one, they would probably rely more on numbers and coordination than any specific weapon. If I were to fight Allomancers or Feruchemists alone (which would be incredibly stupid, by the way), then here's what I'd use: Coinshots/Lurchers: Ammonal (explosive comprised of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder). Makes a nice big explosion and can't be Pushed or Pulled. This would probably work well against Bloodmakers and Pewterarms, too. Pewterarms and/or Seers: Cyanogen Chloride (acrid-smelling colorless gas). Symptoms of exposure include drowsiness rhinorrhea(runny nose), sore throat, coughing, confusion, nausea, vomiting, edema, loss of consciousness, convulsions, paralysis, and death. It causes immediate injury upon contact with the eyes or respiratory organs. It also is capable of penetrating the filters of gas masks, so they can't just ignore it. It also means you probably wouldn't want to be around it when it's released. Just lure them into an enclosed space, release the gas, and that's it. This would also work well on Bloodmakers and Steelrunners.

Metals And Mists: Questions On Allomantic Fundamentals
Shattered replied to Moogle's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There doesn't seem to be a gap. Metals, existing in rigid form, allow for a single power to be used. The Mist is, of course, gaseous, which is far more potent and activates all Allomantic abilities at once. -
How exactly did the Lord Ruler's compounding system work? I didn't fully understand it after reading Sazed's explanation at the end of The Final Empire. Supposedly his atium compounding was stopped after Vin removed his bracers, but doesn't he have to burn Feruchemically charged atium for it to work? Wouldn't that mean he would be perfectly fine without the bracers, so long as he didn't run out of his metal reserve? If that is the case, do the bracers only serve the function of storing age, then being filed into ingestible metal to be burned? Perhaps I just don't understand the logistics of compounding well enough. Please, relieve me of my ignorance.

It's the real Nale. He's killing potential Radiants because he thinks they will cause the return of the Voidbringers, which was happening anyway. He kills them for past crimes they have committed because he's obsessed with justice and lawfulness, a common trait of the Skybreakers, and needs a legal justification for killing them. The fact that the Heralds are still running around makes me wonder what exactly happened after the Oathpact was broken. And where in Damnation in Kalak?
-
Where exactly did Nale find an insect that extracts Stormlight from people? In the Lift interlude in WoR, he has it in his hand, and is described by Lift as like a cremling but with wings, which were bound along with its legs. What kind of creature is this and how does it factor into Surgebinding? How did Nale get his hands on it? EDIT: I now know that this is a Larkin.

I've already spent a bit of time getting acquainted with the site, doing a few theory posts and such, but I still wanted to post here. Maybe I could find someone to share in my wild speculations. Anyhow, hello, 17th shard!

Didn't Amaram's little POV at the end of WoR say that he's trying to bring back the Voidbringers so that the Heralds will return and fix society? I'm pretty sure that's why he believed that Taln really was who he said he was.

Yeah, but Dalinar was never on the path to becoming a Radiant until he bonded with the Stormfather intentionally.

It's not much to go on, but I still remember the section of the plate from WoA where he wrote: "Some of you may know of my fabled memory. It is true; I need not a Feruchemist's metalmind to memorize a sheet of words in an instant." There has to be a deeper explanation to this than the simple fact that he had an amazing memory. This is Brandon Sanderson we're talking about. This leads me to think that somehow, Kwaan was a Lightweaver. He has a mnemonic ability very similar to Shallan's, and it is mentioned in WoR that Lightweavers did, in fact, all have varied memorization skills. I'm not sure how solid this is, as this is the only section that got me thinking on it. Kwaan was a Worldbringer, a scholar, and as far as we know, not an artist. That breaks with the pattern somewhat. Does anyone else have another possible explanation? EDIT: Sorry, I probably should have posted this in the Mistborn section. Honest mistake.

It seems a bit unlikely, as I don't know his backstory and seems unlikely to have much to do with Nalthis, at least not at first, but he is immortal somehow. It seems like he might have enough BioChroma to be at least of the Second Heightening. In WoR, he says: "Perfect pitch makes this all so much easier than it once was...." while tuning his Enthir. That, of course, wouldn't account for agelessness, though. That would require the Fifth Heightening. But if he did have that much Breath, it would produce a highly visible aura of enhanced color. This is what makes me wonder if he is Returned, because then he would naturally be of the Fifth Heightening, accounting for his agelessness and perfect pitch. It would also mean that he could suppress his divine Breath and appear to be a normal human without a visible aura.
