(OB) Most Disliked Stormlight Character
Kardenal_13 replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
So I voted for Shallan because I'm pretty sure she's the only character who's POV I don't want to see when I turn the page. I like her a bit more when she's with other character's, for example I really enjoyed her scenes with Adolin (my favorite being the highstorm/stormwall... cafe(?) in WoR), but when she's alone with her thoughts I feel like she's always focusing on the wrong thing, or at least to not give the impression that I agree with other characters at all times, on an uninteresting thing compared to the other characters. I don't want to seem like I feel the books would be better if we took Shallan's POV out or something, or that I completely hate her chapters, I just feel like they are worse/more boring than other characters chapters. I also don't really like her character as such. This might just be me, but I took the question as to which I dislike hearing from more, because I find other characters that I hate/dislike more, but I enjoy reading about them because I find them interesting. When I read about Shallan I either want to skip the chapter or shake to get her to stop being such an idiot (accompanied by many Wheel of Time Flashbacks). I did like her in WoR, I think this is because she had a clear goal in that book, and I feel she works best when she has a clear goal or challenge in mind, but in OB I felt like she was just there to be there and to frustrate me, and in WoK I was giving her a chance because I found Jasnah so interesting and she was the only POV who showed her, but I still didn't look forward to her chapters. Tl/dr: I voted for Shallan because in general I don't like her chapters.- 266 replies

[OB] [Mistborn] Kaladin's Chapter Header
Kardenal_13 replied to Alpharho's topic in Stormlight Archive
Oh I meant it in more of a general sense, not a specific scene. Of course most other Symbols I can remember we have at least "seen" once iirc, so it could be a future scene. -
[OB] [Mistborn] Kaladin's Chapter Header
Kardenal_13 replied to Alpharho's topic in Stormlight Archive
I haven't seen this WoB before, and I don't know when it's from, but I would venture a guess at the moment that Kaladin's symbol represents him leading his squires/Bridge 4. -
Here ya go: https://coppermind.net I'm so sorry
-
Iirc a WoB says that a brutal enough beating can crack your spiritual web enough to let power in (be it a spren or the little wisp that let's you activate Allomancy), but that it only lasts a short amount of time, so there probably aren't many Radiants made from (purely) physical trauma.
-
If I'm understanding the Fused correctly they're not actually respawning, they actually Cognitive Shadows that take over the body of a willing Parshemn. So would Nightblood take away investiture that let's them respawn? Maaaaaybe? We don't actually know how they stop their cognitive shadows from dissapearing into the Beyond (as far as I know anyway). However, again iirc, Nightblood cuts in all three Realms, so maybe instead of taking investiture that let's the Fused Cognitive Shadows stay, it'll just destroy the Cognitive Shadows out right.
-
I feel like everyone forgot about her existence? I know she was working for Taravangian, but Dalinar sorta let's her be, despite being more involved with other Radiants and giving them resources to develop their powers he kinda just ignores her. I'd say it's some of his "repressed tyrannical leanings" showing, trying to keep the Radiants he controls stronger, but he pays attention to Lift and she is ostensibly (as far as he knows) under the control of the Azish. Idk, maybe there was something more going on there but I don't get why she was ignored so completely.

[OB] What do you guys want from book four?
Kardenal_13 replied to ICanDream's topic in Stormlight Archive
First of all I don't know who the Flashback character will be, but I'm hoping for Sezth (and of course more Nightblood). I want Kaladin to say the 4th oath, Ideally not in some moment of great conflict where he gets a power up (especially since I think the oath has to do with accepting you can't save everyone) but during a moment of introspection, maybe something like what happened to Lopen, I want someone to tell Shallan or for her to realize that she's fracturing her personality, instead of finding her "true self" like she thinks she's doing. More Jashna and Kaladin scenes! I like the idea of the ship though I don't really care if they get together, making them argue more would just be hilarious. More progress on Adolin bringing Maya back to life. Lastly, I want the Stormfather to get over his "no blade for you Dalinar" thing, though I think this is very unlikely (since he's a spren and he's already said it causes him pain to change) -
I really like this idea, and I feel like it's something of a meta-call back to "The Dark One" in the first couple of WoT books, but I don't think an Unmade would be able to show Dalinar the spiritual realm like the Odium we see in the books does. Plus, unless one of the Unmade is MUCH stronger than all the others I don't think the Stormfather would be so scared of the Odium we see, unless he was also fooled and thinks it's the real one. Tl/dr: Like the idea, don't think it's possible/probable.

[OB] Who cried? (It's okay to cry. Admit it. You cried.)
Kardenal_13 replied to Duke of Lizards's topic in Stormlight Archive
I almost cried/got some tears when Kaladin couldn't say the Fourth Ideal. It just hit me so hard. -
Oh I don't mean that Odium needs to have his own, I was just guessing that the Bondsmith Spren are connected to the Shards since the Stormfather is Honor's Congnitive Shadow, the Nightwatcher is Cultivations' "Daughter", so it would make sense that a an Odium Bondsmith would have some connection to Odium. Of course we don't know how the Nightwatcher is specifically connected to Cultivation so it's possible she was "adopted" so to speak, and Odium could do the same.
-
Man I never caught that, thanks for pointing it out :). Hopefully we do get some more info on Shardplate, I'm partial to the made from lesser spren theory atm.
-
Oooooh ok, I thought you meant the Honorblade they gave him. Nevermind then XD
-
I've actually started thinking that Stormfather calls the Sibling the Sibling because it is NW and SF sibling in the sense that it is both of Honor and Cultivation (saw this somewhere else but I can't remember who posted it, sorry), and that the reason there are only 9 types of Fused is because Odium doesn't have a Godspren who can bind with one of them to make a Void!Bondsmith. And I agree that Odium being trapped in the Rosharan System/on Braize has almost definitely made him "Invest"(?) on the planet.

I'm not sure that the 4th Ideal (which I'll call 4th level from now on) gives Shardplate is completely true. I think it's probably true for Windrunners, especially considering the record the Radiants left in the Gem Library. But Shallan is already a 4th level Radiant, and she doesn't have Shardplate. I guess she could be repressing it's existence like she did the Blade, but we've seen no indication of that (at least I haven't) and I can remember suspecting/thinking that Shallan had a Blade all the way back in WoK (not why though, haven't read it in a lot). I kinda agree with @Salkara though I'm not completely sure about the fusing Radiant and Spren, especially since I'm guessing that there were at least SOME 5th level Radiants during the Recreance, and I don't remember any Radiants dying when Dalinar sees the Recreance (and I don't see what else could happen from betraying your oaths when you're fused with your spren). I'd guess that 5th level basically seals the Nahel bond. Maybe it makes the bond unbreakable, even if the Radiant breaks his bonds though I think that it's really unlikely. Though when I think about it more it does explain some things, like how the Stormfather, Nightmother, and I'm guessing the Sibling (since the Stormfather doesn't say they're dead) are still alive and iirc there was at least one Bondsmith during the Recreance (though it could be that the Sibling was simply gravely wounded by the Recreance instead of killed).

I don't think I can add anyone that people here haven't spotted. As to who the letters were from, I think they are probably Endowment, Autonomy, and Harmony. Sidenote: Yes the above line was an excuse to write this I'm not sure I agree with this, I thought that the sword Moash was given was Jezrien's Honorblade? Moash even recognizes it. I don't even think Odium would have to change anything about it (though that would be smart of him if he can make it stronger I guess, or use it to hurt what is left of Honor's power), since it's been stated a few times that ANYONE can use an Honorblade.

Skybreakers I'd probably go with Law or Justice, though I'm not sure which one atm... Law seems to fit more with what we know about them but Nale is the Herald of Justice. I don't think Morality or Ethics fit since from what we've seen Skybreakers don't think about what's right or why it's right, they just choose a code and stick to it. I'm leaning toward Law here. Is there a post for the Releasers' mascot spren being Flamespren? If not why do you have mixed feelings about it? Also I'm not sure about Chaos/Destruction as their principle since it seems a bit too close to Ruin for me. I don't really have a replacement though. One of Chanarach's virtues is Bravery, so maybe that? I think the attribute that the Willshapers have would probably be Curiosity given the description we get of them in WoR. As for the name of their spren I think of Timbre as a Cometspren (since that's what she looks like). I personally don't think that Mist or Fog, mostly because if we're gonna name it for something real than Comet makes more sense than those. As to their mascot spren (I love this name BTW), I think Awespren are a likely candidate, if we take curiosity as the underlying principle of the WIllshapers (plus both of their physical forms involve rings in some sense, which got me thinking about this). Glys is a "He" or at least Renarin has referred to him as such, so I don't think that he is could be the captain's daughter. That makes me think that Timbre probably IS the Ico's daughter, making HER a Lightspren.

sigizil [OB] Why did Hoid choose him?
Kardenal_13 replied to USS bridge four's topic in Stormlight Archive
I keep wondering about this, Hoid even says in OB that he can't really afford to care about people like others can, so how the hell did he end up with an apprentice? I really hope they show that story at some point. -
My speculation for why the Stormlight Healed his glasses is that perhaps Renarin never really accepted having to use them as part of who he was, since he wanted to be like his father and brother. So his Cognitive/Spiritual self (I can't remember which one healing is based off of) doesn't need glasses because his eyes aren't bad dammit, so Stormlight fixed that. I think this is possible (and it's the only explanation that I can come up with atm), especially thinking about Rock's conversation with Renarin, and how he's spent most of his life denying that he's a certain way because he didn't want to accept that he was so different from the rest of his family (which IMO would include the glasses).

[OB] I-missed-it-on-the-first-read little goodies in Oathbringer
Kardenal_13 replied to Ailvara's topic in Stormlight Archive
I already posted this in the general reactions thread, but even "superevil" Dalinar (or as I like to call him Blackthorn!Dalinar) claimed that he was the one who made the choices to kill the people he killed. Kalanor tells him that he like so many other men blame/ascribe their kills/horrible acts to the Almighty but Blackthorn!Dalinar tells him: Which I think echos Bondsmith!Dalinar refusing to blame Odium for killing his wife. -
Gotta go with the Four v One duel. The first time you read it and (if you're like me) get as shocked as Adolin, then you start to feel like he could actually do it. Then BAM, he get's hit goes down and tries to surrender. Then Kaladin says maybe my favorite line in the books "Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do" (Which I love because Kaladin doesn't know that Dalinar knows that Honor is dead), and then you just know they're gonna win. And finally I love Kaladin's joy and then devastation at the end of the fight, especially when he says never again.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't since Moash is given Jezrien's Honorblade at the end of book when the Fused ask him if he still wants to serve. If this happened then it was also turned back into an Honorblade.

[OB] POLL: Which storylines did you love?
Kardenal_13 replied to ccstat's topic in Stormlight Archive
Dalinar: Voted "Stunning!". I really liked where Dalinar's story went, especially learning about past him. I loved that he actually did things in his flashbacks, I don't know if anyone else got felt this way but I always dreaded reading the flashbacks in WoK and WoR, I normally even skipped them on re-reads, but I looked forward to them in this book. I loved how Dalinar ended the book, and I got chills when he said "You can't have my pain". Kaladin: Voted "Stunning" again. Kaladin is my favorite character, so I was kinda bummed that he didn't have more to do, but I still loved the scenes he was in. I especially loved that he actually failed in this book. In WoK and WoR Kaladin comes out on top and pushes through whatever has been bugging him that whole book. In this book he looks at himself and realizes what he has to do, and that he can't bring himself to do it, which I loved. Kaladin was starting to seem a bit too competent I guess? I wouldn't have complained if he hadn't failed but I feel like it's something I would have need eventually and I'd rather have it now than wait on it till the final battle. Shallan: I voted "About what I expect" and "Go to another character" (for some reason I can pick more than one). I don't really like Shallan but she is involved with a characters I do like (Adolin and Kaladin), which makes her something I have to put up with. I found her struggle with her fragmenting personalities cool, though I feel like she ends the book deluding herself instead of actually resolving her issues. I don't necessarily have a problem with that, but I do hope I'm right since I found her "solution" to the problem terrible. Love triangle: I posted enough in other threads but basically I think that Shallan is deluding herself, and that Adolin is going to end up hurt because she can't stop lying to herslef. Kaladin is basically out, but he'll probably cause problems for the new marraige without meanign to. Moash: I was rooting for him until he killed Elhokar. It was a real gut punch when he did, since I kept seeing shades of how Kaladin was in how he interacted with the new Parshendi. I'm pretty sure he's story is meant to be the opposite of Kaladin's and that he's going to end up as Odium's Champion (with Kaladin as Honor's). -
Right now it's tied for first (with WoR), so I'm voting that, but I'm pretty sure the rating will change once I finish my second read.

What's this quote from?
