  1. Of course you do. Can you give me a for instance? How grim are we talking? I find lots of fantasy stories quite grim. Protagonists fighting when it seems all is lost appears to be the recurring theme for lots of well let's face it, novels of all types of fiction.
  2. By grimdark you mean grim and dark?
  3. Does anyone recommend Peter V Brett?
  4. Just read this little thread and pissed myself laughing!!
  5. Has there been anymore news on weather we'll be treated to a stormlight novella soon?
  6. Has anybody read any Chris Wooding?
  7. Not to mention the 'the ward stones', the frictionless black glass, the constant temperate stone and others.
  8. Master Kelvin refers to the ever burning lamp and the metal of Kvothe's sword as "old magics lost to us" .
  9. Ardent described it as Brandon creating a window for us to look through into another world were as Rothfuss creates the world around you. It stroll true for me anyway. Both incredibly gifted in there own right. We know that Chronicler did study under Elodin, who referred to him as an "inky little twat" in which Chronicler agrees. But he also says that came across the name of iron by accident which is hard to believe given the complexity of naming. Maybe Chronicler does have a much greater role to play sinister or otherwise. The lack of enemies doesn't surprise as apart from Bast leaking a little rumour, Kvothe has been quite careful since faking his death and completely submerging himself into being Kote.
  10. I wonder if anyone has thought that maybe 'Haliax' is the ever present "penitent king" in times of interlude? Or whomever is trapped behind the doors of stone. There's obviously Been a change of separation between the fae realm and and the mortal world. Scrail running free, bast residing within the mortal world.
  11. I have a question. Is Chronicler older or younger than Kvothe? Think about it.
  12. I'm currently on my 4th reread of both books. A record for me. Although I've read the mist born trilogy and both stormilght archive books 3 times each and will probably read them again some time soon. The difference between these stories and others I've read recently is no matter how many times I read them they suck me from my world and into there's which for is what reading is all about. The stormilght archives just makes more sense the second time round and even more on the third.
  13. I've been visiting this tread whenever I seem to be struggling with what to read next. This one and the top 5 thread. It's great for that. The two opinions I like to read most are Dunkum's and Argent's. There opinions although most of the time conflict each other are great to read. Two people obviously deep into the genre but with different views. Going back to the top 5 thread though, Dunkum let us know his top 5 and would say that I'm with him on his selections. but Argent hasn't. I'd be very interested to know them. If only for a bit of inspiration.
  14. I may just have to reread them again to make sure
  15. I still think Ambrose is Denna's patron
  16. Has anyone toyed with the idea that Kvothe is a fraud? God help Patrick if that's the way it ends up. I know it's unlikely but there are a few reasons why this could be. He's made it quite clear that he embellishes stories, that he for the most part built his own reputation. He knew exactly how long it was going to take him to tell his story. Every piece of his story could be a past fabrication of his own making. I know we haven't had the pleasure of finding out what happened to Sim, Wil, Fela, Mola Devi and the rest of the characters that would be able to confirm some of what he's saying as fact which is strange. If someone really wanted Kvothe's story and he was presumed dead at worst, best in hiding then there would written accounts of interviews with all these people to try and find some truths to the legend. Personally I do not like this idea and would be disappointed if it turned out this way, I was just wondering if anyone had thought of this possibility?
  17. I read this whole thread a while ago, and there are some very good theories. I'm not sure I've come across one that makes the connection between Ambrose and the Chandrian. I think Ambrose is Denna's patron. When Kvothe gives Denna back her ring, her excitement is subdued when he says he got it from Ambrose (as she realises she won't be able to wear it in front of her patron) Ambrose and Denna's patron are both praised for there dancing prowess, both accused of beating women, both highly influential, they both leave for Vintas at the same time. But I also believe that Denna patron is either one of the Chandrian or in league with. Which makes me think the Jakis line could be them or are in league with them. It's all going on in Vintas really as the Lackless line seem to have something locked away for centuries, and give the impression that they have fought against the Chandrian. Maybe the Lackless line know more of or are in league with the Amir. There's a lot of theories that put Ambrose as king, or the king that Kvothe kills. I myself have been guilty of this but after another reread it came to mind that for Jakis to be throned, maer Alveron would have to have died or been killed as he was third in line while baron Jakis lies 12th now I think. Alveron is to large a character to just dismiss or maybe Alveron is who Kvothe actually kills, that may in turn bring Jakis closer or even put them on the throne. The only reason I can see Kvothe killing Alveron is if his life is put in danger by him, I could see meluan Lackless playing a hand in that. I have a few more theories swimming around but I'll leave it there for now
  18. Can anyone give me their opinion on the master trilogy by Patricia McKillip?
  19. I seem to have stalled half way through 'the rising shadow'. Not because I think it isn't worth reading but because it still hasn't truly gripped me. I will make my way through the series eventually. I've read a lot of people dumping on the books 5 to 10 but I imagine these are the people that were reading the series as the books were being written and waiting with anticipation for the next instalment? I'm going to give Terry Brooks' trilogy a whirl I think.
  20. Has anyone read 'Inheritance' by Christopher Paolini?
  21. Just so I know guys. When you write anything that can be deemed as a spoiler, does the forum hide it or are you supposed to do it yourself?
  22. Have you read the Harry potter books?
  23. Great to see the Harry potter books show up so many times
  24. I'm just about to start book 4 as I finish 'storm front'. A lot of people on here have recommended the Dresden files but I've not been impressed with the first. I've read the rivers of London series and prefer that even though that isn't great. A lot of people seem to put stock into the fact that the Dresden files is 15 books in and still fresh but to be fair, you could fit one book into a single hour long episode of a TV series (not sure if they've already done this). In which case you could put much more stock in the writers of such TV series as NCIS, House, criminal minds and the like. I don't think I'll pick up another Dresden files book unless someone tells me that the writing gets much better. Maybe it's the constant monologue I find a little annoying. Or maybe I've been spoilt by Brandon and Patrick. And Tolkien of course. And Rowling, yes Rowling. And King for that matter. Anyway, I'm going to jump right back into the wheel of time because funnily enough, as much as I've gone about the story not gripping me, I'm missing it. I guess I miss the characters
  25. I think Kvothe will kill him, but I don't think he has already. I think he's in hiding from him. Scope for a further trilogy.
